    That’s the fluid part; in the beginning of the tour the horns are used sporadically throughout much of the second set.
    By Pittsburgh/Buffalo, their used more like you say, in a concentrated portion of the second set, and not on as many tunes. The recordings were hit and miss so hard to say for sure, but possibly they were dropped in the mix a bit too?
    Of course if there was multitrack, things could be edited and cleaned up nicely, but I’m guessing there aren’t any?
    They could always do a chop job and use it for the Wake of the Flood bonus material...
    Personally I the like the novelty, and would really dig having the 11th! It would be yet another one of the multi headed hydra that was the Dead. Talk about a palate cleanse! Another totally different version of the Dead to go to. And As I say, if nothing else, sans the horns, you still get great 73 Dead and a 73 Dark Star! But that’s just me...

    EDIT: historically you have to think they’d want to get at least one version of Keith singing Let Me Sing Your Blues, sorta like they got the only versions of Money Money out, though of course those are tied to “big” shows without the controversy...again, makes me think good Wake bonus material?

    And there is the patch at the very end of Morning Dew through the beginning of Sugar Magnolia they would have to work around. Such a difficult place to put a patch.

    I'd still take 9/11. Much of the tour is somewhat a novelty, at least that's how I compartmentalize it. Oro.. since you are fresher off this tour than I.. I think most of the horns come smack dab in the middle of the second set jam sequences, right? If so, if they would have snuck them in during the first set and perhaps a song or two in the second set this might have been less a distraction from the goods that evolve in the meat of the show.

    73 Horn Tour

    Yaasssssiree Mayor Jimmy, ‘‘twas me, and Bluecrow, until I lost him at the rest area after Syracuse (hopefully made a few dozen people happy from that particular rest area on the ole I 90 before the 84 Carrier dome show, but that’s a whole nother story; ) So Old Crow was hangin round some fine young DH ladies in a burnt Orange VW bus from New Mexico and when I came back out he was gone and I haven’t heard from him since? But I digress.
    Yeah I did the whole tour this fall and though I enjoyed it, I’d say mini box at best, but for whatever reason, like DHB said and feels, and the vibe I’ve always got about these shows over the years, is that many folks feel there’s nothing there?
    It’s kinda weird, perched right in the middle between the epic summer shows, and perhaps the greatest tour ever, and yet it’s like it doesn't exist?
    Personally, I concur with the mayor and others, and Dave has it on that “list” he put out when Dave’s started, 9/11/73 is definitely the “one” if ya had to pick.
    And PSYCHE in my best Ashton Kutcher voice it’s from.....wait for it....William and Mary! Hmmmmmm
    Oh, I think it might’ve been Hornsby first show too?
    I also argue that there’s the historical factor. As some here have discussed, sometimes shows get hyped and thus released because of certain historical significance, and that occasionally their not necessarily top shows. Egypt being first to pop into my head, not the best show, and the quality certainly isn’t mind blowing, but come on, are ya not going to release it? I’m sure glad they did...
    Finally, if you look past the horns, your still getting primo Dead from just before what some consider their best tour, AND, a sweet 73 Dark Star!
    So I can’t believe they haven’t at least got 9/11 out!
    If I were to pick a mini box I think I’d go with;
    - 9/11W&M for sure,
    - 9/17 Syracuse and/or
    - 9/21/73 with either
    - 9/24 or 26 to illustrate the tour changes, mainly around the use and duration of the horns...
    A 3 show box would probably be perfect, and as the tour was very fluid, a good taste of that...
    I unfortunately agree though that this is highly unlikely, at least not anytime soon, and of course I’m not familiar with the tape situation?
    I think 9/11 will see the light if day at some point!
    I’d be a shame if it didn’t...

    EDIT: oops forgot, saw something recently about the ginger bread man guitar up for auction...

    Never trust my memory. I thought we were talking about the Capitol Theatre, but...

    I know that guitar in KF's post is the peanut. Strider usually catches up on these threads and seems to have a great memory. One of the great personalities here.. what I wouldn't give to have seem some of the shows he has seen.

    More to follow. Any update on Jerry's Granola, Popcorn and Potato Chip guitars? In hindsight, it was not a good idea to name his guitars after junk food with all that good weed around. At least the Peanut and Pretzel survived....

    Agree on the horns comments, but I think if they found a way to clean up and fix some of the cuts, William and Mary might just be releasable.. and there is the archive. I think Oroborous or someone here just did a run through all those shows recently, maybe BobT?

    Trottered, I remember Dave saying that none of those shows would ever be released. Many people enjoy the sets with horns from that month, but I think the band and a decent number of fans aren't interested in a release from those shows. Good thing there's the Live Music Archive! :)

    I really enjoyed this year's Dave's Picks. The first two shows (10/29/77 and 06/23/74, for those with shortened memories :) were killer, and then I appreciated hearing a ton of music from years that we don't have many releases from. At this point I would rather hear some good stuff from the 80s or 90s once in a while, rather than the 21st-best show from, say, 1973. Dave and Mark and Rhino are doing a stellar job of getting us tons of music from the entire span of the GD's career.

    There was a lot of talk about this a few weeks ago.. I think Strider88 might have been one of the ones leading the charge here.. plus, he got to see it sort of up close and personal at the Port Chester shows.

    The Peanut.. an early custom guitar made for Jerry Garcia. Originally rumored to have been invented by George Washington Carver, it was later confirmed to be an embryotic Alembic creature created by Rick Turner.

    Not to be confused with the Pretzel.. Another Garcia owned Turner axe which was stolen while in the possession of Sam Cutler circa 1975 and only recently resurfaced.

    Jerry's mystery guitar may have produced his best sound

    First I have to get this out here - I really like the artwork they emailed for Dave's Picks 37. Yeah it's more skeletons, but I like the simplicity and colors. I have a feeling the new artist Helen is going to continue be a good one for this year, as far as my taste goes.

    As far as guitars go, I love the Gibson SG in terms of look and sound (Townshend memorialized this guitar on the Tommy Tour, which included the great Woodstock footage, Live at Leeds, and Isle of Wight.

    And then Jerry had his landmark moment with the SG on Live Dead (and Bobby pulled one out occasionally pre-hiatus).

    The Alligator Nash Strat sounds so damn clean, how can you not love that one too. Somebody on here once commented that nobody brought out the best sound of a Stratocaster like Garcia; I always took that comment to heart. And the Wolf is the Wolf - you need go no further than DP 18 for the Bertha solo or The Wheel into.

    But then there's this lost period in the guitar info on Jerry between the SG and the Nash Strat. Once I became a raging Dead-a-holic, I noticed those early '71 multi-tracks had a sound of their own.

    The two new Port Chester shows convinced me there's another guitar in there. The WMD and AB shows have some of the greatest sounding Jerry ever released (to my ears anyway); but more important, wtf was he playing?? Well, if you Google it, you can find a picture of one of the oddest looking guitars I've laid eyes on. At first I thought it was some kind of off-model Gibson Les Paul; the headstock looks it, but the body is narrower with symmetrical rounded off cutaway (similar to some old Rickenbacker Spanish body electric guitars I found online while trying to identify what Garcia was playing. There's a blurry picture of it in the booklet for AB 2/18/71. Here is a closer up pic:

    Whatever THAT guitar may be, is the one responsible for the rich melodic tone that Jeffrey Norman brought to life especially well on the 2/18 and 2/21 shows. Personally, I think 2/19 (aka Three From the Vault) is not quite in the same class of engineering perfection as these 50th anniversary shows, but it's also an old release at this point, so a lot may account for this (my subjective opinion not least of all). Yeah yeah, I know - It's only rock 'n roll.....

    Would love to know if anyone can positively ID Garcia's guitar here.

It’s difficult to know when pre-orders will be sent out. My unreliable memory tells me that dead.net said they had changed their system and would be sending pre-orders out ahead of the release date and I think a few lucky people got #36 before the release date. Previously, the sets weren’t sent out until the release date itself (29 Jan).
The rate determining step isn’t the dispatch it’s the delivery handling. I got an email telling me that #36 had been sent, but in reality it didn’t move for another 7 days and took a lot longer to get to me. I, at least, was lucky enough to get the delivery. I believe a few people are still waiting. Of course, times are strange at the moment so glitches in the systems must be expected. I’m confident it will be worth the wait.

I have the greatest memory in the history of humanity. Of course, I can prove this by letting you all know that......the tea cart I used to have is, Could I please have extra cheese on that, I need to know what the GVWR on that vehicle is, how many limbs are there in a box of Devonshire pub malt liquor, excuse me, I was talking here, Tuesday is the name of my nike shoes. I would like to pick up my order at 3:33, check on the hog all purple.

1) I think it's safe to say that if we don't receive a shipping confirmation by next week same time then it is safe to assume that DaP 37 will come out around the time or after the official release (1/29), which is a bit disappointing but not the end of the world

2) IDK what happened but it seems like every other person here had an issue with DaP 36, myself only receiving it in the latter half of December. However, as Dennis pointed out, paying for a download and not even being able to download it is a travesty in and of itself. Let's hope this year we can at least get a more consistent and smoother rollout of their products, especially with a box set down the line this year

3) Ark box set seems criminally late considering how great some of the recordings on the archive are. I'm also curious as to whether we'll see a Vince era release sometime this year. By this point in the DiP series, we had 3 seperate Vince Era shows (DiP 9, 17 & 27) which are all excellent shows from excellent tours. Same goes for the Road Trips (Vol 2 No 1 & Vol 2 No 4) and Download Series (11). Maybe they seem to think that with the standalone release of 6/17/91 and Ready or Not that they don't need to delve further into this era but some shows are just bananas, my personal highlights being shows such as 12/12/90 (just awesome), 9/22/91 (killer shakedown), 5/5/91 (H>S>F), and 3/17/93 (First Lucy in the Sky). Something from '91 would be really appreciated by me personally.

I always thought that was something of a self fulfilling prophecy. In fact, I seem to remember eating more crap in my early drinking days than when I smoked-late night curries and all that. Maybe a difference in American and British stoner culture.

Alcohol gives you the munchies more than weed for sure. Ever checked out that open till 3 am college convenience store after the bars close? If you look closely you can sometimes see drunk college students taking that radioactive nacho cheese sauce intravenously... including the pickled jalapenos.

After going whole-hog on the Dead for a while before the holidays, I'm taking a little break. I started a "serious" run-through of the entire Spring '90, so will pick that up again when I resume my GD listening. Boy, those shows were well-recorded, and the band was ON. I have also decided to try some streaming, so have trial memberships going in Qobuz and Tidal Hi-Fi. Man, a fledgling Deadhead could sure do worse than to pay $150/year to stream EVERY GD release in CD (or better) quality. :-O

Injecting anything you don't have to on the basis of medical advice is insane. There were people round here injecting alcohol a while back. I heard of someone suggesting injecting disinfectant last year, too. Crazy.

Reminds me of my old joke about the man injecting curry powder. I went round to help, but by the time I got there it was too late-he had already gone into a korma (coma). Sorry if you've heard it before.

So does anyone have info on whether 4/4, 4/5, and/or 4/6 are in the Vault?

Looks like a wild three nights and only a month after the Live/Dead shows.

I guess we'll know in two weeks if Dave L. will tease anything about this year's goodies when he goes superlative over the upcoming April '78 show. (As you well know) I'm betting on a (6) show box from fall '72, 18 discs, $200.

Where do I get these detailed fantasies? C'mon, bein' a shut-in for 10 months tends to hatch all kinds of ideas.

Nothing surprises me anymore. Remember a few years ago when kids thought it was cool to eat laundry detergent?

Then came the alcohol enema. Becasue of course, the whole point is not to socialize with friends and loosen up a bit, its to proceed straight to blackout drunk as quickly as possible, and the upshot must be that you already have your pants down.

Its not a big leap to mainlining some mushrooms. I prefer shiitakes myself. After all, who has 45 minutes to wait for the drugs to come on? We are truly in the age of instant gratification.

Another great under the radar player. Saw him at my first Bobby show: Bobby and the Midnights at the infamous Kleinhans Music hall on Election Day 1980....still have newspaper clipping with headline “Weir Wins by a landslide”..
Besides his personal talents, Jeff Beck has always had a knack for finding awesome Bass Players!

As far as weird drug fetishes,I’ll stick with Ibogaine ; )

I believe the two partial shows were the first segments I pulled down from archive.org when I first stumbled upon it. I forget the reason, I think someone was hyping this.. perhaps Gans, I forget. The subject matter I remember.. the growth during this period and their ability to improvise. How different these shows were compared to their last.. and how rewarding the risks they were taking musically turned out to be.

Talking of hot 67...the above's concert at The Roundhouse was on television over Christmas, and I got round to watching it last night. I was at this show, and loved it to pieces, but I wasn't sure how well it would translate to a recording. I needn't have worried. It opens with an incredible sonic punch-Interstellar Overdrive-Astronomy Domine-Lucifer Sam. The kind of mad clatter that Pink Floyd jettisoned as the 70s wore on, all powered along by Nick Mason's high energy drumming. It sounds amazing. Looks as though its available on blu ray/dvd/cd, too.

Jorma turned 80 less than a month ago. These guys are true monsters. Saw them back in the '70s and ;pretty much every opportunity for the next 45 years. No idea how many shows, probably in the dozens. Lifers. Them and me (in a small way). Jack would actually leave the ground at times during their sets. When they got into their hard core electric jams, they still had the goods. True masters at acoustic and electric blues and rock idioms.

I had tickets for my other two favorite working bands -- Los Lobos and Tedeschi and Trucks -- but, well, you know.

Okay, lost my focus on the future for a moment, thinking back to nearly one year ago when Jack and Jorma rocked the Boulder Theater. Now looking forward again, won't mention "2020" ......

Completely agree.. these guys are the real deal.

I forget the first time I saw Hot Tuna, but it was not in the '70's.. these guys are the real deal and every time I have seen them has been more than worth the effort. Add in NRPS and you have a nearly perfect trifecta of great bands you must see perform live.

Especially Jorma, they guy can pick.
