    The two albums where Mick Taylor really shines for me, are the Keith lite Goats Head Soup and It's Only Rock n' Roll. Superb soloing by Mick T. on Time Waits For No One.

    I like Ron Wood, but he seemed to adopt a kind of court jester role with The Stones which I found a bit tiresome. I do like these archival Stones live releases though - the Taylor years are still the gold standard, but the last two I got-from The Steel Wheels tour 1989 and 1998 in Beunos Aires rock like the proverbial b......Specially the 1998 one.

    Just wanted to chime in about my appreciation
    for the Mick Taylor era. As Daverock points out the real
    secret to the Stones true sound was the Jagger/Richard/Watts
    lock-down (Charlie comes in a nano-beat behind Keith).
    That said Mick Taylor played the sweetest leads for their
    material - by far. He was more instrumental in a few
    key songs than most people realize - Moonlight Mile - Keith
    passed out on the studio floor and Jagger, ever the economist
    demanded the sessions proceed and Taylor composed and played
    all guitars, Likewise with Goats Head Soup where he plays bass
    on several of the tracks as well as co-credited for Winter.
    Live by ’73 he was very frustrated with Keith’s erratic
    playing. One night MT was just expected to be the gun slinging
    guitarist while others he had to carry the show cause KR was
    checked out. The final straw came on It’s Only Rock and Roll
    when he and Jagger co-wrote “If You Really Want To Be My
    Friend”, yet when the album came out it was credited to the
    Glimmer Twins. Adios Stones …
    I always loved Ron Wood with the Faces, yet it seemed
    he really dumbed down his act when he joined the Stones.
    His best work was on Some Girls - otherwise he was all mod-rocker
    hairstyle and shades and no substance (probably just what Mick
    & Keith wanted).

    The Stones are the one band I know as well as the Grateful Dead. Right you are about Beggars and Bleed Daverock. Taylor was not involved much. He started with the Honky Tonk Women single, which for some odd reason they used as a single and went with Country Honk for the Let It Bleed album (certainly my least favorite on the record). Played on Live with Me from that record too.. Taylor contributed substantially to Sticky Fingers through Only Rock and Roll. He One of the reasons he quit was because he was not getting the writing credits he deserved. I was surprised by your comment crow told me, but I guess if you're not a Stone Head you may not know how involved he was in the writing and recording sessions. I am surprised too hear you found his live playing a distraction. His soloing was so smooth. Prime example is Dead Flowers at the Marquee '71 -OMG unbelievable how many notes he played "in time" on such a fast little diddy, and exits right when he needs to for the next verse after improvising a solo that had a proper beginning middle and end. As far as "weaving" the China cat example is cool yes, but not mahatma Keith is talking about. He means chord weaving, where, he'll play one thing and the other guy will fill in something in between (also chord playing) but the key is that they compliment each other's playing. I would emphasize that I do not mean they playing the same thing in a different octave (this is a different technique altogether that is used to fill out guitar sound). Check out Stray Cat Blues live at the Roundhouse 1971. Mick Taylor was so good he alternate modes within a song, he could play a different solo every time, or in some cases (Midnight Rambler) Keith would start a lick and Mick would finish it for several bars. To each his own is my philosophy I just couldn't figure out where the Taylor criticism made sense. I will say this, that one live song I am too keen on his playing is the Brussels Brown Sugar where he picks up the slide and does sound like he's overplaying. But that was the only time I've heard him play slide on Brown Sugar or sound distracting. Overall he was easily the best guitarist the Stones ever had. Brian Jones was easily the best multi-instrumentalist they had, but he added his touches to music that was already written. Taylor actually composed music in the writing phase (and to his credit he played bass on some tracks that Bill Wyman was not in the studio to play on like Tumbling Dice and Happy).

    Yes, China Cat/Rider features wonderful complimentary guitar playing.

    I agree with what you say about The Stones to some extent. I think Mick Taylor happened to be in the band when they made some of their greatest recordings, without necessarily contributing to them being great. Both Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed were based around Keith Richards playing, with embellishments on some songs by Brian Jones or Mick Taylor. But Keith is the only guitarist, I think, on many tracks on those two albums.

    In many ways, with The Stones, the rhythm is both that, and the lead. The riffs of so many of their songs define the songs -the solos are just the icing on the cake. It doesn't matter to me too much what the soloist is doing on tracks like Jumpin' Jack Flash - its the groove that counts.

    Live, the pulse is what I like most, and that is provided primarily by Keith and Charlie Watts. And again, the soloing is the secondary to the groove.

    You want to hear "the art of weaving," as Keith Richards sometimes call the two-guitar thing he supposedly loves? Listen to what Garcia and Weir do on pretty much any recording of China Cat. Or pretty much any recording, period. Because Weir is truly the master of being the Other One, playing jazzy chords and single note runs that complement Garcia's genius. And he can do it on the fly, spontaneously responding to whatever musical thoughts cross Jerry's mind.

    If I say that Weir is the most under-rated guitarist in rock, I doubt if anyone here will argue with me. What he does isn't "rhythm guitar." It's more like what a great jazz pianist does.

    The Stones? I mean, I love the Stones, but at least 90% of the time all that's going on with the guitarists is that one guy is playing lead and the other (almost always Keep) is playing "rhythm": ie, playing the same chords or riff over and over while the singer sings or the other guy solos. This was particularly true during the Mick Taylor years: people talk about how great he was for the band, but when I hear live recordings from that era, half the time Taylor's noodling without regard for anything anybody else is doing, and it's just a distraction. The Stones were much more interesting live with Brian Jones OR Ron Wood.

    Keith's a GREAT songwriter, a great RHYTHM guitar player, AND one of the all time GREAT bullshitters.

Lose my DaP’s try to sell me tea.....

How about a seaside chat apologizing for the constant screw ups by Rhino/Deadnet and a commitment to making things just exactly perfect.

It would go a long way if such a statement could be released, I am sure. It would also be better, in my eyes, if such a statement was to be made, that it could come from Marye rather than Dave. She has always seems genuine to me, and has always given me the impression that she makes a real attempt to be helpful. And usually is. Dave seems too keen on blowing his own trumpet.

Ordered the Dave's Picks the day it was released...Got an order #, said it was shipped, Waited, Waited, Waited,,,Contacted Dead.net again , letting them Know I never received my CD, Got a email back 3 -4 days later asking me to RESEND my order # and Contact Info., By that time...SOLD OUT !...Great going Folks,...Also, there is NO WAY to call to talk to a Human Being about a problem like in the Past...Guess you people don't want to Communicate with your ''Valued'' Customers Huh ?...SAD, I've been a Subscriber since DAY ONE !...Ordering Dick's Pick's / Road Trips AND Dave's Pick's...But it looks like You've turned your backs on us old time subscribers....I Messaged a Complaint last week, But it looks like you removed my Complaint...Remember CENSORSHIP is a Bad Thing...And for the People at Dead.net to do this is EVEN WORSE !..ADIOS AMIGOS / AMIGAS....

....Disney+ has The Muppets seasons 4 & 5. I haven't seen these since release (80-81). Cue the flashback memories. I have the first 3 seasons on DVD and have watched them over and over, but then they stopped putting them out in 2008.

So in addition to 1) 3+ months with no DaP36, and 2) almost nonexistent response from customer service and 3) getting multiple dead.net emails about "That GD item may sell out fast!" with picture of the already (3+ wks) sold out DaP37...

TODAY I get an e-mail from AMAZON saying "We found something you might like!" and a picture of DaP36 for sale on Amazon USED for $82!!! (insert GIF of me banging my f-ing head against a wall). Probably the copy that was supposed to be mine but GD sent to someone else....

But it's kinda funny that Amazon is reaching out to me proactively about helping me get me my DaP36 one way or another.... AT LEAST THEY'RE BEING PROACTIVE about it, unlike dead.net who for 3 months ignored multiple direct questions about something for which they I plunked down my hard earned cash after them BEGGING me to buy it.

Once again with feeling: Hey dead.net: DON'T BEG US TO BUY SH__ IF WE'RE THEN GONNA HAVE TO BEG YOU FOR MONTHS, WITH LITTLE IF ANY RESPONSE, TO GET IT TO US! Get you're f^%$g house in order, THEN AND ONLY THEN hump our legs with all your e-mails and social media and almanacs telling us what you're selling next! Kapish?

An absolute debacle, and on such a (IMHO) great release, too. I may be covering ground you have tread already, so apologies if I am, but have you reached out to the magical Marye? When I had an absolute nightmare with a previous release (one of many), she solved the issue. She certainly does her best to help, and I’m hoping she can do the same for you. Because I agree, stop pedalling all these trinkets and tea, get delivery of the music product done correctly and quickly, and when a bomb goes off like this, make it right!

The Music Never Stopped
Drama we came across on prime. Not ABOUT the Dead per say, but their music features prominently in it.
Interesting look at how music can help with brain damage etc...and generational differences...
Some might find it a bit sappy, by I enjoyed it. Might be a nice watch with kids/adolescents?

A decent movie. My understanding is that it is loosely based on a true story by Oliver Sacks. He wrote a series of essays documenting neurological medical conditions. In this particular case, a patient suffering from a debilitating brain tumor showed signs of improvement when taken to Grateful Dead concerts. Evidently he kept asking his caretaker, “Where’s Pigpen?”

I think that all options are on the table, except for probably another 1976 box, but even that might be a possibility, they did release those two Spring 1990 boxes one year after the other. Multiple years from the same venue. A seasonal box. one show from each season of the year, probably not. One thing I do know for sure, what I wish would come out, or I feel will be released, never happens. Nothing has been released from the Frost, Greek, or Ventura, I feel that some of those shows are certainly release worthy, not all but some. My wish is for an Avalon 1969 box, or Winterland Oct 1974 box, so now we know that neither one of those will come out.

Thanks Mike. I did mention/shoutout to Marye on this board many posts ago about my situation but I didn't hear from her. Is she still around? Anyway, I finally did (2 weeks~ ago) get a response when I reached out DIRECTLY to Dr. Rhino - that's when I was finally informed they were making another batch of unnumbered DaP36's.

However my multiple requests into dead.net were basically ignored for 3+ months and counting. If I hadn't stayed loud and been prodded by someone here to contact Dr. Rhino directly (who DID respond), I still wouldn't have heard a damn thing about the plan for a 2nd pressing of DaP36.

I very confident that the box is of muti-track recordings that should narrow it down.

Dap 37 seaside chat Dave said "Delayed twice?" TRI would have been closed due to pandemic.

Dap36 seaside chat: Dave said "Jeff was working on preliminaries."

If it were from 2-track reel to reel that they could have done at home studio.

There is no mention at all about box sets in this seaside chat. No official word from Dave or Rhino that it was delayed twice.
Hopefully, we will hear something soon, but who knows, it could be a fall release.

Thin, in the past I too have had bad dealings with dead.net and rhino. Marye was my only help, no one else responded to my many inquires. I had many damaged and unplayable discs with the E72 box, took almost a year of constant complaining and emails and such to everyone on dead.net. This was before Dr. Rhino existed and no one helped me but Marye. I continued to make my voice heard over and over again and finally, they came thru with the goods and replaced all my defective discs. It was at the same time that Dave's picks was just starting up and I did not purchase anything from dead.net for 1 and a half years until they fixed what they promised.
I missed the first 5 Dave's because of this but I would not buy until replacements were sent. I do see your point, the powers that be just move on from a selling point and try to sell you the next thing on their list of products, (Tea, discs, etc...) sometimes acting like the last "big thing" never even happened.
All I can recommend is to continue to complain, get Marye involved and keep pressure on Dr. Rhino. I believe sooner or later, you will get what you paid for, but the failure of the sales and shipping dept. is a black eye that doesn't seem to bother anyone at rhino or dead.net.
They have the goods, and they know it.

After multiple listens to Dave's 37. I still love it. In fact, it's one of the best of the last 2 years(not THE best). And, I'm still surprised!!
As far as everyone not getting their stuff, this is an unacceptable situation. Not sure how to resolve, but I wonder if a petition could be drawn up, and see how many signatures we could get, and send to Bolo, Marye, and Dr. Rhino. Just thinking out lout.
Oh, and the Zappa soundtrack has some real nice stuff(released & unreleased). The incidental music is interesting, and segues nicely with live 1992 Yellow Shark stuff.

I liked TMNS also. Where's Pigpen. Ha. Anyway, an authentic and interesting story. It's streaming on Amazon Prime for the next six days. This movie has become somewhat hard to find recently.. I'm surprised it popped up as streamable.

I forget where I heard about this, maybe tales from the golden road.. but there was a strong mention of what they had to go through to get Ice Nine to agree to let them use GD songs in their soundtrack, essentially Hunter had a big part in approving use of Grateful Dead songs in movies and advertising and was conscious of ruining the Brand / diluting or commercializing the content of the songs.

Definitely worth watching.

thx Sam - I did send a mssg to Marye today. Hopefully she'll respond.

But yeah, they just collect the dough, and if the product is defective or doesn't arrive, they don't respond! IF you know who to reach out to (took me 3 months to figure that out) and make enough of a fuss they eventually deal with it (well, we'll see....)

Amazing that the GD would take our lifetime loyalty and purchases for granted and treat us like sh__. Like dogs, they think they can kick us (or ignore us) and we'll just keep coming back. Screw that.

Sorry for the negative vibes, but Unkle Sam is right: Squeaky wheel gets the grease! I'm being squeaky as hell so 1) I finally get my sh__ and can move on, and 2) maybe someone up the chain will actually see this and realize how f'ing broken this system is, and fix it for those of you good people who continue to buy from this site.

That's a great cartoon. Michael Zagaris , photographer for the 49ers and the Oak!and As, also a rock & roll photagrpher , told two very funny stories on the Grateful Dead Marathon on Saturday that I hope some people had a chance to hear. When Bill Graham encountered Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols
for their sound check at Winterland and Sid Viscous was wearing a swastika patch on his pants and Bill's reaction to it. Also, when Zagaris was going to photograph the Who at the Fillmore and Keith Moon was eating some mushrooms and he gave Zagaris some, and Zagaris said I've gotta photograph the show, and Moon said I've gotta play me fucking drums.

I must be the last person in the continental US to get their Daves glass. Mine finally shipped, but now UPS is saying there is a weather delay. I live on the East Coast so it must have gotten plugged up in Texas. Oh well, I guess I’ll see it someday. Lol.
Edit: sure enough, there are Dave’s Glass already up on ebay. There’s just something ludicrous about the whole thing.......

Thin's comment of giving a life times loyalty to the GD reminded me that there is a big difference between The Dead and Deadnet. It sounds a bit grandiose, but The Dead were artists involved in creativity. Deadnet are a business involved in selling product.

I'll look up the Bill Graham interview. I have seen in depth interviews with him before and he was an interesting character. What I connected to with Bill Graham during listening to some of those interviews was his New Yorker world view from a European background encountering the Grateful Dead spirit together with that time periods' Zeitgeist. Bill and I are a different generation but with a similar background and hence a similar sensibility.

With Bill Graham being a child of WW2 and the Holocaust, I can imagine his reaction to Sid Vicious' Swastika regalia?! With that in mind, other Europeans that I have known including Russians who were both Jewish or Gentile would often have a casually mocking sense of humor regarding the Third Reich. For example: When drunk, partying, and posing for a group-party photo they would all give a Sieg Heil salute together - once again, both Russian Jewish, Orthodox Christian or Agnostic/Atheist. I once noticed a box of Trix cereal on their table in which the Rabbit cartoon character had the Hitler mustache drawn on it with sarcastic writing which was a combination of Madison Avenue Advertising mockery meets Joseph Goebbels' Minister of Propaganda content. It was just their sense of humor and was very witty.

It was all along the lines of, say, Charlie Chaplin mocking Hitler or the British films showing him doing a little Irish-Jig Dance after the fall of France.

More snow today in N.Y.C. I'm in the north west Bronx not far from where legendary taper Jerry Moore grew up and hung out near Gaelic Park where our GD played some great shows among other legends. I look out the window and cannot wait for Spring, a Lockdown end and out there somewhere are the long-lost Radio City/Warfield tapes! Positive vibes and prayers for those people in Texas and elsewhere.

It does make some sense.

I think the box was to be released fall/winter 2020, and I think the pre-order would have been announced 10/302020 when Shakedown Stream played the Dead Ahead video from 10/31/1980.

No worries man. We all hoped for that second box last year. The only time I heard Dave mention a box set in the last six months was during the 2021 subscriptions, just saying something to the effect, we have a great box coming in 2021.

Sounds like you might have some insight on what it will be?

I just hope we hear something soon.

FW 69! Show for show four nights in a row, perhaps the best run in GD history. Certainly worth it's weight in C4.

Full disclosure, I'd take 2/14/68 over any of the FW shows. Personal preference.

Ha.. And then there's that.

Perhaps.. I have a theory I believe I voiced here years ago.. in the early years or should I say back when they used to practice, rehearse and record.. they would often take January off or a combo of January and February off and work on new stuff and god forbid contemplate recording it. They would preview as much of it live before recording usually on the spring runs (71 Port Chester, 72 AOM, E72, 73 Maples, etc.). So the early year stuff was the preview and they would tour with it all year back when they believed it would help sell their albums. No wonder late fall stands out, and by Dec, holidays, family, weather would curtail a full month of touring. November being a reliably powerful month. But I think Dec 73 was strong, Oct. 89, 10/19/73, and I do like the warts and all early stuff.. Bird Song Feb 71, Maples, FE 70.. some of these shows might not even be releasable but I love them nonetheless. I like the embryonic flawed attempts, to me they are pure magic and we get to peek inside their creative process.

As things evolved it seemed the Chinese New Years run was the only set of Winter shows they might typically do in a year. They generally took some time off in the winter and recharged their batteries and the end of the year was to pack the schedule and get their 80 or so shows in before the cycle repeated itself. During this period they were primed and any flux in the new material was pretty much hashed out, the stuff that never worked had all but disappeared.

Anyway, I wholeheartedly agree with our Senator but I do love all months and all years. Nov was hot, but so was June, July, October, December and we can't forget those spring tour breakouts. And February at least early on. My two cents on best months.. I reserve the right to be wrong.

Usually Mardi Gras and Chinese New Year concerts. Always fun because of all the revelry - floats, dragons, etc.

Historical footnote: our "krewe" was listed in the margins of the '93 Mardi Gras poster. Fun times!

Back East, our main source of info for these previews of the year seemed to reach us via Duprees Diamond News and then by word of mouth.

Pre cell phone and pre internet were fine with me. The element of surprise is much more valuable than the sneak peek.

At the end of the Grateful Tea video Dave says that he’ll be back ‘very soon’ to talk about ‘big music releases for 2021’ . I listened to it again just in case the forthcoming announcements were going to be beverage related but he definitely mentions music.
The lack of a 50th anniversary studio album could mean they don’t need to rush out the box set announcement to fit it in like last year.
