    Sis got to see the first show at that newly remodeled roller rink too. Right before the Hammond/Dead show she saw Jethro Tull and the Denver band Zepher with lead guitarist Tommy Bolin! Dang! I didn't know how pure hippy she was back then. A legacy. Waiting on a call from her to get the whole low-down. Seems the Denver cops got The Family Dog (see Canned Heat drug bust) and Mammoth Gardens both shut down to cut down on juvenile delinquency. A Denver civic leader was quoted as saying, "The place is going to Hell in a handbasket". But at least we're enjoying the ride!

    Jeez, P.T. sorry to read about all that. I know shit happens, but that's an avalanche. I hope it doesn't get you down too much, and that you have a steady recovery. A friend of mine said he had bad trouble breathing when he caught it last February - but he was okay after about three weeks. So here's hoping it won't last too long for you either.

    Got a soft spot for mammoths.

    1st Show - thanks for the rec. I love this acoustic/electric era. Listening to the sirmick transfer on relisten (sirmick trnsfers are quality for me). yes, a bit back-of-the-hall but truly very much listenable to my ears. both Jerry and Phil plus vocals and overall "sound" well captured in terms of energy. you can easily relax into this tape. plus its an excellent freaking show. Epic Dark Star > Stephen > William Tell > Eleven (last one?). On a side note this lead me to a nice DeadEssays blogpost by Light in Ashes on audience tapes from 1970. Typical thorough rundown. Plus bonus content in that in the comments there are a whole bunch of interesting taper war stories from back in those earlier days.

    Oro - guitar preferences understood. To my ears Lightning Bolt had a very "clean" sound and at times almost like he was playing an acoustic. I think the Travis Beans were similar in having what I would describe as clean sound. While I loved the TB he was playing in '77, the one in '76 not so much for a long time. June '76 box finally set me straight on that. Skull and Roses Jerry sound is a favorite and I only learned in past couple years that he was playing the Rick Turner Peanut which I hadn't even really known existed, let alone its place in '71 history. And just yesterday you posted that Rick Turner had passed away. RIP.

    Edit - And now, after some "research", I freaking learn that Jerry was playing Rosebud in Seattle '94. Read that he switched to Rosebud for Summer '94 and checked a photo and damn that's what he playing. Ha. Guess my ears not as calibrated as I would think sometimes. Also read that he was playing Rosebud summer tour '95, including 7/9/95, (which I saw) because Lightning Bolt was "in the shop". However - Rosebud had some technical issues mid-show 7/9 and he finished the show with Tiger. He was playing Lightning Bolt for the '95 shows I saw in Seattle and Portland. Jam in Foolish Heart 5/25 perfectly expresses what I loved about Lightning Bolt.

    PT Barnum - Whew. Dodged the bullet thank goodness. Speedy full recovery.

    A fine Sunday to crank some (Mammoth) Dead.

    I have had all the shots, boosters etc. Last week I got out of the hospital after not being able to breath and could not complete a sentence. I started feeling bad on Thursday, itchy throat. Then, Friday, bad chills, fever, just an all around feeling of death. Got thru the weekend but by Monday, could not breath and was literally gasping for breath. Called the VA nurse and told her my symptoms, she said "Get to the Emergency Room, now." So I went. Turns out after all my precautions, I got covid. They treated it with new antibiotics and by Friday I was able to return home. I am still on O2 and can't really go anywhere or do anything. Still weak as a puppy and am attached to this breathing machine that produces O2 by stripping the Nitrogen out of the air and gives you pure oxygen. I have no brain fog, none. I have no stamina either. Simple tasks are a burden and any thing strenuous can't be done.
    On top of it all, I went to the store with my portable O2 tank, did some shopping for food stuffs, and checked out, got to the car and opened the door, turned around and the cart was rolling down the parking lot with my groceries in it. I turned in pursuit and tripped over my own feet and fell to the ground, o2 tank crashing to the ground along with disabled me resulting in bloody scrapes and a huge blood blister on left hand where most of the weight landed. Nothing broken luckily. Now, I have my groceries delivered. I don't go out. I don't drive.
    Lost a filling upper left too, and then there was the car accident with my wife driving. No one hurt, just the car, 7000.00 damage done to the passengers side both doors and rear quarter panel. Got to close to a pole.
    In closing, shit happens to us all, you got to roll with it. I think soon I will be actually rolling with it, in my wheel chair.

    52 years ago today my older sister, the one who can roll a joint one handed while driving, was at her first (and only?) show and tripping to primal Dead. Trying to find out, as some reviews have said, if this was one show or two. Deadbase lists as two nights with the first night having an acoustic then electric set that ends in Drums, with the second night (4/25/70) being electric starting with Dark Star and going through some grease with Pig's Man's World in there for what seems like a short set list. Was this a rain-out or a curfew? One reviewer said it was one night with a tape cut in Man's World and he likened the sound to being recorded in a bathtub. Not high praise but he did like the primal nature of the beast. Any ideas?

    Edit: The notes from the five versions on the Archive seem to indicate one show and there never was a 4/24 show. Looks like the five entries are from only two sources and the others are improved versions. Especially interesting are the citations of a Feeling Groovy and Tighten Up jams in the Dark Star. Gotta give this a go! Now, how do you download from the Archive?

    Lol, sorry BC, I was worried my words were not going to be right.
    I liked this show, it just made me think, remember, which in itself is ok.
    But those were changing times and sometimes there’s residual baggage attached?
    And I’m always preaching you shouldn’t compare apples to oranges etc, and so yes, for the time it was a fine show and I enjoyed it, and appreciate being guided to a 94 show that was enjoyable, because unfortunately, not all are as consistent. I’m glad to check out any era as long as the show is up to the standards of said era, actually, I’m pretty game for anything lol. But there can be a difference in consistency and quality between randomly picking say a 77 show or a 94-95 show, the odds that is, no?
    I just have the perhaps bad habit by modern standards of critiquing what catches my ear, both good and not so good, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I don’t enjoy the show. That’s why I listen, to see how every show is different, and It’s often easier to pick out the miscues than the subtle golden yummies. Also, I can tell folks often don’t get what I’m trying to get at, but that’s on me I’m sure. But it’s all good and that’s why this here gathering spot is called with discussion!
    Oh, same with the guitar thing: it’s not that I don’t like it, I just like it less than others, same with the Travis Beans. It’snot that I don’t like, I just like Tiger more etc. I’ve usually embraced the evolution in the dead’s sounds as the years rolled by, but the industrial later 90s stuff I didn’t like AS much. But it’s grown on me over the years, same with Vince in some ways. Just need more quality exposure. Like an athlete, need more reps etc!

    JIM: hang in there amigo, I feel like life’s piling it up a little your way?

    Those two are a package deal.. The Phil Space Extravaganza. Somebody must have put something in his coffee.

    I wasn't able to hit 4/18 but I plan to revisit it at some point soon. Nearly stranded in the middle of nowhere today, flat tire and issues that can sometimes come with that. All is good, got a little sunburn but had a great day. No listening though.....

    Oro - those Seattle shows are at 2 different venues, though just blocks apart. Coliseum is indoor, Memorial Stadium is outdoor. I think at that time Memorial Stadium was used primarily for High School football playoffs, it wasn't all that big.

    Gonna have to agree to disagree somewhat on the '94 show. I didn't run Set I this time around so need to do that, but I think it's solid good show, esp. given the time period. Scarlet > Fire had that extra juice and, like I said, Jerry's cup runneth over on the Dew. and I can't ask for anything more. You're not the first I've heard by any means who didn't like Jerry's guitar sound at the time. Me? I really liked the sound of Lightning Bolt, which I think Jerry was playing that night. As chance would have it I actually attended the first Lightning Bolt show, which was the Jerry Garcia Band 8/7/93 right there in Memorial Stadium. Also saw the first Lightning Bolt Dead shows, which were later that month in Eugene. Not that I actually knew that he was playing a new guitar, I wasn't that dialed into the equipment. But Jerry's tone in all three shows sounded excellent to me. The JGB show was an afternoon affair and top shelf - release worthy later era JGB in my opinion. I think Jerry enjoyed it so much that that's how the Dead ended up playing the same venue in '94 and '95. Memorial Stadium was probably about as chill a venue as you could have in those last years. My youngest brother was out visiting that month, so backpacking, camping, and music. It was an awesome time.

    I'll check out the '83.

    You guys have never heard 4/18/82, especially liking spring 82…blimey!
    I haven’t mentioned it because I just assumed, and we all know what happens when we assume, that everyone has heard that one! Well, look at the upside, you guys are in for a treat as the whole show is good, not just the cherry.

    Interesting show too. Overall thought it was good, JG seemed to struggle at times and I don’t think I’ve heard him having so many tuning issues since tuners and custom guitars? Perhaps some kind of guitar issues?
    Good show though, really dug the new tunes that they didn’t always seem to have their parts down.
    Interesting catching 6/13/94 next. Same venue, same day, just FOURTEEN years later!
    The 94 was ok, but sounded like they might of been back too far as you can hear way more of the venues acoustic signature. I believe Nitecat said he was using a high stand in FOB? That would certainly reduce the venue, ambience and crowd! Can’t wait to check out more! We need a list so we can work em into rotation.
    That is if you SB snobs can handle it lol, JUST TEASING!
    The 94 was good. Er, hard to put into words…tired and industrial came to mind. The former was more a vibe, but seemed to cover much until Bird Song, which had a little extra, but that’s where I thought of the latter. It sounded industrial, which I don’t mean good or bad, just different? I’ve not been a big fan of Jers guitar sound during this era.
    It’s not bad, just different? Bob changed axes and crap constantly, but besides effects etc, Jer kept that trademark sound mostly intact up until here. I don’t think it’s not using live speakers on stage since that happened in 92. Perhaps it’s that different guitar (forget the name) he was using, or perhaps something in line?
    Felt like it sounded like a cheap piezo pickup on a plastic ovation like guitar through a crappy amp. Of course I’m exaggerating but it did sound different, for good or for Ill, your taste may certainly differ.
    But the show picks up more in the second and though I did enjoy it, it reminded a little of the feelings we started to have in those days, like gulp, it might end! But all these years later I’m able to listen with different sort of ears, and don’t suffer from the hangups I had back then. So was it a 74 Beatty, no, but so what, it was still an enjoyable performance by the best band in the land. Thanks for the pick. Since not all shows from then are as consistent, it’s nice to have picks when venturing into foggy territory!
    Oh, BC, if you’ve not done so, perhaps check out one of my 83 favs from that Seattle venue, 8/27/83!
    Make sure you get the right version? Can’t recall but you want to hear it on speakers not cans, at least Jack Straw!

..and so ends a great winter. We are at flood stage and water is just now beginning to creep into the basement (largely cement). With perhaps a three to four foot base in the high country and 50 degrees, we got three inches of rain today and another inch in store before 8 am. Water is just beginning to enter the basement. It's officially a flash flood.

It's going to be a long night.. not that this is terribly unusual.. but always unnerving. Protect vehicle's, the big TV, computer eqpt and the sound system.

So what are the best GD flood songs? The Mighty Flood>Black Snake from 4/18/70 comes to mind.

And so the fun begins and the transition from winter to spring sports. I say who needs sleep anyway...

I do love rain and flood songs and train and railroad songs. It's baked into my being. Perhaps that will drive the pick of the day as much or more than the calendar. But I'm not picky.. so long as it;s good and hopefully GD or at the very least the JGB.

I wish we could have some of your rain, we have only had a little over 3 inches, we are supposed to have at least 18 inches a year, we are in a terrible drought. I'm afraid the fire danger this year will be extremely high.

Its not by, or covered by The Dead, but "Tupelo" by John Lee Hooker is an amazing flood song. "When The Levee Breaks" by Memphis Minnie-and Led Zeppelin - is also a corker.

I only saw the GD twice after 1991, I was simply too busy in that period of my life.. the last show I saw was the rain show. I think 80s fan and a couple others here might have attended too. 6/30/95 Three Rivers Stadium Pittsburgh. Their seventh to the last.

Couldn't think of anything clever for my subject line.

6/30/95 might have to dust that off.
I remember in around '97ish my roomate telling me about that show and since I hadn't followed what the Dead were up to throughout most of the '90s, I was pretty interested in hearing their version of Rain as well as the "new songs" that he mentioned.

He talked about how they played Corrina at every show he saw, and I asked, what's that?
He put one on.
I was not overly impressed at what I was hearing.
I didn't dig into collecting 90s dead for quite awhile after that.

Funny.

Dead Air played a sweet upgrade to 9/11 & 9/12/73 last night.
It was kicking my ass.

And I will not compare the two.

OB - Prepare yourself to have your mind blown!! (I can't recall the quality of Pre-China Cat tunes, but man everything from China Cat on rules).

EDIT - I believe this is the first '95 POTD. I know we've talked about '95 but no "official" picks until today.

Jerry really nails it when he said if you put Aoxomoxoa & Live Dead together it gives you a vision of what we were doing at the time.

I add to that, if you put Aoxomoxoa 50th, plus Fillmore West '69 box, Live Dead & 2/11/69 FE together you get a view of what the band was really up to in early '69.

What a cool time for the band.

They'd passed through the late '68 turmoil in the band and Weir & Pigpen had managed to hang on and the band was going furthur.

There is a quote on the Archive from Dick Latvala, "The best and the most exciting Grateful Dead show ever is without a doubt 2/28/69 Fillmore West". I dig this whole run myself, and 3/1/69 is my favorite, but I believe that all 4 of these shows could be placed on the Mt. Rushmore of greatest Dead shows ever. You would have to carve two more heads for 5/2/70 and 2/14/68.

Crested and beginning to drop. I should have given a full discloser, that Pitt show has some Jerry issues.. still, my last show. Since I have already absorbed what I can from that one.. I might follow BTK's lead and check out 3/1/69. Hope that doesn't offend anyone. I have to agree, if there is a run of shows that has more ferocity and focus than that run, I like to meet it and hang out with it for a while.

Cheers all.. the river is dropping and my pumps did their job. One one minor fiasco, but I did not take a big hit and this one is beginning to be in the rear view mirror.

Man.. I want to get vaccinated.. that would be grand. Setting the dials for 3/1/69 and cracking open a well earned beverage.

It's to bad Bolo didn't find himself at the corner of Sutter & Vaness., but there certainly is some gold left at Post & Stiener.

Looking at Road Trips 4.2 which includes all of April 1, 1988, and part of March 31, 1988. I think this is a solid release.

April Fools & Jerry Band sounds fun!

PS - Dug that 6/30/95 show, one of the better shows of that year I would say.
Band sounding like they were enjoying themselves, and the crowd definitely sounded that way.

Good choices Bob and DVikes. I haven't listened to either in years. When I see Mission in the Rain or To Lay Me Down on a setlist, my ears perk up.

I like the artwork on Road Trips 4.2 and there's some interesting songs on those CDs. Ballad of a Thin Man, To Lay Me Down, a good Scarlet Fire, Estimated Eyes.. China Rider, Other One Wharf Rat.. and for good measure it's got a Cumberland.

Happy to see some palate cleansing Garcia Band too!

6/30/95: even better than I remember. I remember on the drive home we thought it had been worth the ten hour R/T drive time, and all enjoyed it, especially because of all the Rain. It was one of those you had to be there. Remember thinking “what are they doing up there” as they seemed to be waiting around with Robbie Taylor on the 2-way radio etc. I still think that between the radar weather station they had at those big outdoor shows, and they had someone out front of the stadium, and the band was waiting for the signal that the front had arrived, like they synchronized with the weather, because you couldn’t have choreographed that better if you were Bob Fosse!
It was a fun show especially due to the adversity, which the band rose above.
Unfortunately the recordings do seem to suck, but no so bad I didn’t enjoy the listen.
So onto 88 today...

Have always loved this release and it reminds me of my youth. Ballad of a Thin Man never gets old and I wish they played it more than this show and the other gem from Hampton on 3/27/88.
I know this is a Healy recording but I don't think they ever revealed the source. Was this a Dat cassette? Sound quality is really good and would love to have some other 88 releases to compare it. Not sure when we will get another 1988 release. I liked this year, not as good as 1989, but there were some great shows. The four Alpine shows were a blast, of course I was a 17 year old hoping the train would keep rolling. It sure did for a while!

Bring on the next box release!

Thanks for shining a light on this DV. Been a long while. Great playing and a solid balanced recording by Healy (head and shoulders above most of his work in Spring '87). Really enjoying this listen (quite the raging Other One). Saw the shows in Hampton just prior (as did several others here.) After first night hanging with a dozen folks in motel room and Katie(?- name a little fuzzy 30+ years later) asks the room "What song would you like them to break out tomorrow night?" My choice was To Lay Me Down. Opening notes that night and I'm like OMG and I remember glancing down the row and there's Katie looking right back at me with this big smile on her face. Earlier in the set they played that first Thin Man and that was a crackling Holy Crap moment in itself. Such a powerful run of shows and other than a couple of shows in Pittsburgh my only shows in the East. 4,2: nice release. Some of these RT are pretty sweet. Remember this and the 82 release really surprised me when I got them. Yaasssss a Thin Man AND a Lay Me Down, AAAAND...it’s got a Cumberland!! good times!
BLUECROW bringing back wistful memories, especially about “spaceship Hampton”....siiiiiigggghhhh! I loved that place, the place itself and all the awesome shows I was fortunate to see there,....sighhhh...
Remember being a little disappointed with the year 87. Like they were back and all, but something was missing? Those Hampton 88 shows were like a drink of fresh water, just what the doctor ordered! The boys were back...

EDIT: yeah, BC, put your order in early! That way maybe it will get delivered on time ; )

Thanks for the green light guys. How about 3-17-93 Landover for tomorrow (3/4)? If this has come up before I missed it (my apologies.) There's a nice Miller board - https://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1993/03/17?source=99608. FYI - the encore is sandwiched between set I and set II. Spoiler alert - going to mention a few of the tunes below.

Got to thinking about this show last few days. Wasn't at this show but I was surprised to find out my youngest brother was when he joined me out west August '93. I remember Gans playing Set II material on GD Hour shortly after the show and it completely floored me. Garcia plays Handsome Cabin Boy (no lyrics) out of Space (a complete OMG / I can't even...) and then after the Other One its the 3rd ever Days Between. This was my first exposure to Days Between and remember feeling like a portal had opened into another world of myth and dream, just full on spooky and haunting. And its the same to this day. A Hunter/Garcia masterpiece.

I'm not sure my brother even had a beer for this show as he was in midst of exams or some such for law school. He said the energy surge that swept through the crowd (and his body) with the opening notes of the Lucy in the Sky encore was unlike anything he had ever felt.

"Solid" show front to end. No Cumberland, alas, but its got a Desolation Row. Also, an early Lazy River Road, another of the latter songs I really dug. Plus there's a Dark Star :)

Enjoy. Onward.

12/28/78: never would of gone there otherwise, so, glad I did. Nothing mind blowing but another solid Dead show!
And another notch on the proverbial bedpost....

78, what a year for the Dead. Most really love, including Dave, the first half of 78. Most likely because they feel it maintains the 77 vibe. I have really never felt that based on the releases to date. Great shows, but it really doesn't stack up to 77.
For me, late August through the end of 78 is the best part of the year. The energy just feels so different after they returned from Egypt. And the release of Shakedown Street!
This show is a monster, I will definitely listen to it again soon. The Shakedown is fantastic and the late 78 Estimated Prophets were really groovy, into a short really fast Eyes. And we get a Truckin (Sounds like Phil Oroborous) and Wharf Rat. I will have to check out the previous night as well soon.

Okay, Bluecrow, on to a 93 show for tomorrow. Looking forward to checking that one out.

I look to 2021 as a year of growth. When the E72 box was released.. I listened to each show in sequence, what a blast that was.. virgin listen after blow my mind virgin listen. It was so much fun and I had never done something like this before. From there I kept the torch alive and went in sequence show by show through mid year '78 at which time I got burned out on the whole ordeal. But that journey lasted years and was to me rewarding.

With the Doc Project and the 50th aniv of the '71 shows combined with newly restored Capitol run I am hell bent on listening to '71 in sequence. No reason, just because I think it will be fun, so far so good. I will keep the pace here too, as best I can.

50th anniversary’s on the days and corresponding dates.
Safari so good. Thoughts on 3/3/71 Fillmore West. Five of the new songs get their west coast debut. March 1971 was when I turned 17. I can’t say enough about how great an era for the Grateful Dead it was. Jerry played several different guitars that year. Also a few personal changes in the band formation.
Somehow the fresh vibe of that exciting year comes through in the recordings.
I need to read Docs work about 1971.

12/28/78 was fun and I agree with DeadVikes observation about the band after Egypt.
I love set 2 of 12/30/78 at the Pauley.. that show rocks!
And then we all know what happens the next night, wow.

And then there's 1971, in which young Strider began to really cut his teeth on this here band.
Another big Wow.
Jim let us know how that '71 journey goes, that's dead-i-cation.
With a thirty year archive of music and the constant upgrades and releases, I have a hard time making it through a whole tour, let alone a whole year.
But we'll see.. maybe someday or maybe not.

However, today... it's 3/17/93
Which I'm glad this came up as I noticed a Soundcheck I didn't have.

As has been mentioned Drums > Space really was going some far out places in the final years.

Mickey's trance influences begin to appear and really help with the time traveling.

When Jerry comes in on this Space on 3/17/93 the dynamics of the recording are just about exactly perfect.

I keep thinking it's coming from somewhere else.. but it's right here in my head.

Nice Pick BlueCrow, This is a real cool show, digging it.
