I have been tripping around the early to mid-80s a LOT recently. Warfield, Radio City, summer 82, spring 82, 80, 81, even some 79, BCT 86 (4/22/86 China Rider....yowzah!)

Dead and Co, yes nothing will ever compare to the Dead, but, after one year of this B. S. I know I wouldn't hesitate to go see them if they come anywhere near the upper midwest.

Man, if the shows I saw during this time were like this, I might of made more effort to go to more the last years....
Not a perfectly played show, but the misses weren’t any worse than any other year and there was much to like.
Starting with a good Here Comes Sunshine, one of the few songs I really wanted, but never got, sigh...
Decent Feel Like A Stranger followed by Jackaroe, instead of same o, not to be confused with Same Thing. Decent version but I was never a huge fan of this song no matter if the Dead, The Band, or the ABBs etc...actually the Band did a decent job with it.
Lazy River Road has that infectious quality where it grows on you to where outta nowhere your singing it in your head and trying to remember the words. El Paso: the acoustic helps give it a little freshness so it’s not just Bob playing the same 5 songs ALL the time. New Speedway Boogie was nice if not perfect and another yea for something different!
Ok Promised Land to finish the set. Actually was ripping pretty good and then JG just sorta stops...
Haven’t heard too many Scarlet/Fires lately so that was nice, followed by the whole ridiculously good mid set section kicked off with Playing and including the last DS and some magnificent weirdness that I need to hear much more of!
I Need A Miracle was a bit of a let down just because of the complete vibe change. Sometimes I dig it right outta space but other times it seems to rude for the mood? But JG slides back there with a sweet Stella, then capped off by Maggy/Liberty. Wow, another fine show from 94 that I’d never would have expected etc. Another fine truffle that the finely tuned senses of GOGD has sniffed out for our enjoyment. Good boy, Ruff! (Thanks!)

ALASKA was truly enjoyable too. All 3 shows were solid with some cool variances and fun unusual song placements.
Jerry was on and Brent still in that nice fresh new stage sonically. Makes you wonder why they didn’t break out DS sooner/more then they did as he certainly would of been up for it?
I think if they had done these shows 9 or 10 years later (when older and more possibly able to fund) I would have gone because I’m sure it was a unusual laid back scene up there. I know nothing about vault tapes, but most of what I heard was good enough to speculate what if? Perhaps an assorted 80 box from different venues?

8/3/82: didn’t get there yet but that’s where I’m going next and then I’ll try to get to 3/9/81. Saw a good show on 3/13 and I had a tape from the 10th I believe so interested in this one as it seems like March 81 is another nice little niche.

Only thing I don’t like about them is occasionally they plod along at a crawl. Or Bob messes with the tempos too much: slow songs are now fast, and ones that should be fast are now ssssslllooooowwwwww!
Haven’t experienced it much, but occasionally ugghhh. But that’s nit picking as most of the 8? D&C shows I’ve seen were enjoyable and worth the effort. Scary how big they were getting though.
First year in Boulder the place was half empty, by the last year (2019) things were getting too crowded!

Broke out Dicks Picks 30. Listened. Then I read wickedpedia and was reminded it’s not the complete 3/25/72. Next thing I did was relisten all the March 72 Academy of Music on to my phone. Halfway through that run of shows. It’s awesome.
The Capitol Theater February 1971 run was a kick ass set of 50th anniversaries.
Relisten has streamlined access to so many incredible Grateful Dead concerts.

so just getting around to this after throwing it out there in response to a GOGD comment about mid-set Let It Grow(s).

first set is "chock full" of all sorts of goodies. Set II strays off the beaten path into striking and beautiful territory. Shakedown kicks ass. excellent Samson. To Lay Me Down is gorgeous. and, yes, that Let it Grow! He's Gone > Other One out of Space (ca. '73 stuff). edit - i guess there's usually a Trucking sandwiched in there :)

Started out the day with the GDHour 9/2/68 revisit, cool to hear Pig laying down the tasty organ.
Wonder if this was before or after the "firing"?
I'm assuming it's after, based on both the engagement of Bob & Pig on that show.
But... I can't remember exactly.
I know the "firing" was around October '68.
But not sure when the meeting / discussions occurred.
Kinda want to hear the tape that exists of that meeting, also kinda don't.
The crowd response to St. Stephen on 9/2 always strikes me.
Fairly new song for the band at that time and I wonder how many people in the crowd in Washington had heard it or if they were just responding to it's power.

So 3/11/92 is a good show btw.
Gonna turn on King Bee 3/31/94 and check it out as I'm curious to hear it again.

Pretty Funky! Not quite the Pigpen version, but makes for a good Bob tune, and would've definitely taken this over say: Walkin' Blues, or any of the new songs.
Looks like they only played it 2 times? 12/8/93 & this final one on 3/31/94.
Never dug King Bee when I was a kid, but after hearing & seeing Jerry & Pig playing that tune at the Acid Tests I really began to appreciate it.
Now whenever I see it on a setlist I can't wait to hear it.
Funny how that happens.

With the rumor of Nudie Suits I started down the 12/15 rabbit hole last night. SirMick transfer sounds mighty fine so far though the song listings are off by one.

Stumbled on a Internet Archive post from attendee of 2/19/73 that I hadn't seen before. He's a regular there from what I remember.

I was at the 2-19-73 show at the Amphitheater, and my recollection was they came out for the first set wearing them - and before playing the first tune, they made kind of a big deal of them. I remember Jerry and Bob bantering on about them while showing them off to the crowd a la fashion show antics. They also went on about them at some point during the first set, around either "You Ain't Woman Enough" or one of Bob's cowboy songs - I remember being amused, and the band seemed to be having fun with fancy threads. It felt like a different show when they came out for the second set wearing jeans and t-shirts . . . I have a faint memory of Jerry hanging his embroidered jacket on a chair or mic stand to show it off.

And for those of us still hoping for tapes of the whole night, and trying to remember what all was played, . . . I do remember Billy spending some time playing a big gong as a regal attention-getter, but can't for the life of me remember if it was for a possible "Morning Dew" or "Dark Star", or during the missing part of "the Other One", or even sound check??? If someone has a better memory of what was played that night, please chime in. I also remember being really curious and amused by the people behind us, going back and forth about what was played and when, and checking their notes scribbled in the dark . . . not sure if 12/15 is a Nudie show. It's at the Long Beach Arena and is sandwiched between the Nudie Shows in Winterland 12/10-12(?) and 12/31. not that this matters much to my ears.

I guess the main reason I thought that was because I used pic for my "album" cover in iTunes.
At the moment I'm totally not sure why or when I did that now that I looked around.
So.... 12/15/72 as a Nudie, not confirmed at all.

Maybe some smart person can confirm date on that photo.

I think the really nice color photos with Jerry, Donna in red, and Bob are from 12/12/72. I've seen photos from what is clearly the same show also attributed to New Years '72, 2/19/73, and Nassau 3/19/73. The reason I think 12/12 (or another date in that run) is that Jerry is playing a really distinctive guitar. It's the Erlewine Stratocaster that Garcia played for a handful of shows in fall '72 - note the really big numbers on the neck. Reddit comment: "Made by dan erlewine (he’s the lead personality for the stewmac guitar tips channel) in the early 70’s, it features a rosewood pick guard and the funny number fret markers. Not much else is known about this guitar, and this is really the only show where he used it. Odd, because erlewine states it was a custom build for Garcia himself. Erlewine states here that it was a laminate maple neck, the wood from an “ancient piano”. He himself states it wasn’t the greatest build standard. Saying this, it’s not really a surprise that it never really showed up at any other gigs, as we all know Garcia was pretty particular (for good reason) and the weird design choice was probably why. It had a stop tail piece and a brass nut, very similar to alligator. I came across a version of the Nassau movie that is synched up to audio - the footage is playing in the band. I'll see if I can find the link. Very cool time capsule, fuzzy as it is. You can see Phil really groovin in that Phil way from time to time.

I noticed the Road Trips releases were not Rhino releases. Anybody know why? I know they had the contact with the Dead during that time period and were releasing other shows and box sets during this period.

All this talk about nudie suits. I'm looking at the picture and I'm thinking, I'm missing something here. I thought "nudie" suits were coveralls that made you looked nude. Not country western hank williams type jackets!!!!

The Garcia Nudie Cost unfortunately burned up in a fire. The story is on internet and how the person obtained the coat, it was lost in a house fire. To bad, nice collectors item.

I had never heard of them either. I have seen pics of Jerry in the jacket though.. Learn something new every day.

Yea, that is weird.. they signed a ten year deal with Rhino in 2005, I believe FW the Complete Recordings was the last item truly released by GD Merchandising.. the Download Series came out about the same time. The first Road Trips didn't come out until 2007, but you are correct.. the label for the early Road Trips was Grateful Dead. I still suspect Rhino was involved they just hadn't hashed out all the details of the transition and finalized the legalese.

I do remember there being a hold up.. Dicks Picks stopped, digital downloads were not very satisfying.. and then the Road Trips announcement a year and a half later. Also, they did four Road Trips per year except in the final year when we got Road Trips 4.5 from Boston (a good one) so season four had five quarters. So something changed mid stride, there must have been something going on behind the scenes.

The first CD that was officially released under Rhino records was Road Trips Volume 4 Number 2. They talk about it a bit on Wikipedia:

It took me some time to find my Road Trips to figure this out, they were not on the usual shelf because they are sort of a different size and shape.. after some digging I found them randomly mixed in with the brown paper bags we use to pack lunches, I can see how you would make that mistake.. Looking through all these, Blair Jackson was much more involved and wrote liner notes. It looks like Scott McDougal did the artwork. Ahh... the priceless bonus discs.

A rough transition and vanishing profits? It was about the same time we saw Blair's Golden Road disappear and a new take on the cover art, an attempt to cut costs??? Anyway, I don't miss the lunch bag cardboard and I welcome (for the most part) complete shows. #ReleaseMore68!

I will say for those of you that don't have RT3.2, do yourself a favor and go get it. To my ears, one of the best quality recordings I have ever heard. Rex Jackson knew what he was doing and must have passed it on to Betty.

I missed the Texas Dead yesterday.
Found myself listening to 12/15/72 PITB & Dark Star again and reading about Nudie suits & guitar forensics.
Checked out the 8/3/82 which was fun, but I was distracted and mostly paid attention to TLMD & Let It Grow which are worth the trip.

And then stumbled into some more '90s goodness.
This time Set 2 of 3/18/95.
I'd recommend it to 90s fans & doubters.
If only for the Iko, listen to Jer having fun!
If that doesn't bring a smile, well I can't help ya.
But all of Set 2 makes for a good time if you ask me.

If there's a pick for today, I can't tell.
But if not I might seek out the Erlewine guitar sound.

As for RoadTrips, I know I heard Dave talk about the discussion with Rhino to end the Road Trips series and start Dave's Picks. I think it probably was something that was started or in the works before the Rhino partnership / formula was really established. Def sounds like there was opposition from Heads who wanted full shows and the series was not a hit in regards to sales and feedback. Can't say I love the format in comparison to Dave's Picks.
But I will say this.. if they release it, I want it ;)

It always strikes me when I listen to Visions, that Jer only played it with the GD during the two years he was essentially dying.

11/4&15/71: DV, interesting your thoughts on quality for this one? Though I dig much of it, parts sound pretty distorted to me? I’ve noticed similar on E72 shows and perhaps others from this era. Didn’t spend quality time so I’d have to go back etc, but I’m thinking it’s just their actual rigs I,e., they had to push those old Fenders since they weren’t using McIntosh MC 2300 power amps yet on the instruments...so I’m sure part of it is their just playing loud and overdriving their rigs etc, but it could also be tape over saturation too? I remember this one really surprising me though when I first got it.

The 82 was cool but not mind blowing. Nice solid 82 show though perhaps a tad mellow?
The 3/9/81 seemed a little meh to me? Now I was doing other things but still, usually there are enough things in a good show that will divert my attention...but maybe it was just situational?
Forget where else y’all been poking around? Haven’t messed with those 72s? Guess I’m still burned out on early 70s stuff...meaning burned out on the same old Bob tunes over and over....definitely been editing some of those outta my mix...

3/18/95 looks interesting, same with the night before? But,
Think I might go 6/6/92 just cause nothing else really shaking and I’m trying to (sort of) work my way through post 91 shows that I was at, but maybe haven’t heard, or official releases from the time, that I haven’t got to YET...I’m looking at you Boxilla! Currently working my way through 12-19-73% DP1.
This definitely screams for remastering, full on Plangentization/Normanization. Then Box it up with 12-18-73 and a few other shows from December 73.

Next I’ll move on DV’s pick.

Also am thinking of doing 2-28-69 vinyl since I went with digital on the anniversary.

I guess I’ll have to do some more research? Worried I might have a batch of stuff I copied around the same time that all sounds funky...no idea how or why?
3/19/86 is on YouTube and not too bad considering...biggest surprise is JGs stage presence etc. He Doesn’t seem to jam as much, but he’s moving around and getting into the music, like more into the song then the playing if that makes sense? He’s big as a house and bloated but otherwise he looks pretty good! Not a chin hang in sight ; )
Maybe not great but a good show with a few wobblies. A good outing for a tour opener.
Bobs all full of the piss, he’s loud and proud on the video, including the whole fun Truckin/bad mic cable scene. Unfortunately It only seems vaguely familiar as I’ve seen similar antics, though perhaps never seen him jump to Phil’s mic? Being a roadie, I’m sure I was aware of the situation but I just can’t recall?
So I still don’t recall much, like how I got there or who with lol, though I’m sure I was hanging near the board.
