Gentle mistresses and most distinguished gentlemen, we have come upon the release of the DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 37, from the Fifteenth of April in the year Nineteen Seventy-Eight, at ye olde College Of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. Cast your waistcoats and your bonnets aside, the Grateful Dead are on steady gallop from the opening high-kick of "Mississippi Half-Step" into a where are we going? where have we been? "Passenger," followed by full-on versions of "Friend Of The Devil," "El Paso," "Brown-Eyed Women," and a double-barreled "Let It Grow>Deal." Catch your breath and straighten out your tricorne because the 2nd set shows no bounds with delightful takes ("Bertha>Good Lovin'," "One More Saturday Night") and introspection ("Candyman," "Playing In The Band"). Then - great fifes and drums - it's 15 minutes of "Rhythm Devils," with band and crew gathered round to amplify the merriment before delivering a rare incantation of "Not Fade Away>Morning Dew" that sets the soul alight. Pure jollification!

Yeah, when I was listening to China rider, I noticed the audio seemed a bit edgy. Maybe with headphones I'll be able to isolate what I was hearing, but I went back and toggled it with one of the 1973 NW box china rider and the sound is very different. As if somebody's signal is a little too high in the mix and getting slightly distorted maybe? Or maybe the master recording's levels were a little too high making the mix sound a bit saturated? Not sure.

Not a complaint, just an observation. Great show. Listened to most of the release last night, and it's glorious.

Your right about the loud vocals bob and jerry sing. It was the first thing I noticed as the first set played through. The high vocals make this Dap a lot of fun.

    Hey Thin

Been awhile, glad to see you weighing in. I don't know if it's that I usually listen on headphones or what, but I found the three PNW '73 shows very uneven from an audio standpoint. I figure it has to be the headphones because everyone else loves them. By "uneven" I hear the symbols coming in piercingly loud on half the tracks maybe. Also some tape hiss creeps in and out and there. My recollection is the Bird Song show is the least affected of the three. And the Dark Star / Eyes of the World from show #2 is right on the money. But overall I'm constantly dicking around with the EQ trying to get the sound right on PNW "73

Now the '74 shows are a completely different story; the audio on these is about as good as I've heard any '74 show sound. They've just about eliminated the tinniness that those Wall of Sound phase cancelling microphones used to cause. Not sure how they did it but they did. Or maybe I just wore out the mid-range in my ears. That could definitely be it. But yeah, those '74 shows are ultra smooth. I should revisit those '73 shows again. I recently listened to the Dark Star => Eyes of the World after Daverock mentioned how well Bobby was playing on that Dark Star; but otherwise it's been awhile. Now I feel like I should do an immediate comparison. I may have undiagnosed ADD.

Couple spoilers ahead if you haven't received yours yet.

Just queued up the show. I think Bertha / Uncle is my favorite Jerry / Bobby 1-2 opening duo. "Smoking" I think Carlo said about disc one. Yeah, I hear it so far. Jerry is really tearing it up on Me & My Uncle. Even Sugaree is a bit harder than usual. Works for me.

I hear you AJS on the Bertha sound issues. They should have pre-opened every show with LLR to straighten out the audio.

I'm hearing Bobby much louder than usual. As loud as Jerry at least. Keith is nowhere to be found, but I'm strangely okay with it for the moment, I think because Bobby is playing that Gibson so well and it sounds so good.

Yeah, another cookin' solo in Tennessee Jed. Good stuff. Oh dear, LLR came on and I'm enjoying it. Lol, guys, honestly I probably should have sobered up to report the real story here. Well I mean - it's not the alcohol so much as I probably shouldn't have drunk all of that cough syrup this morning.....stay gold Pony Boy.

Listening to DaP38, these songs sound very different - interesting different. More rambunctious if less refined vibe here than the recent ultra-smooth PacWest '73 box and the amazing November '73 shows. And the sound quality isn't as sweet. Kinda like RT "Fall '77" vs. May '77. But a great show and a great listen.

Oh, and the bonus disc Let It Grow is the FIRST EVER. Bobby: "We just spent a month in the studio and we're gonna try something we haven't done before". The Let It Grow jam starts high-voltage, then spins out into a jazzy jam that ebbs and flows into a beautiful Stella Blue. Wow.

Meanwhile, I have been exploring the wonderful July 78 box. I'm beginning to think that is my favorite small box. The band is so passionate in their singing and Jerry is ripping out tough riffs. A week ago was the two Red Rocks show, and last night I dug deep into the St Paul show, and part of the Arrowhead show. When I was seeing the band in '78, I was pretty disappointed in their lackluster performances, but heck this is a completely different band!

Seems like the overwhelming majority of the Drums segment from 4/18/78 has been cut, but I cant' say I'm complaining. On another note, it's interesting to note that Dave specifically points out in the Seaside Chat that partial releases, such as 4/18/78, will most likely never see the light of day as full releases. For example, while only parts of the second set from 4/19/84 were included in DaP 35, we will most certainly never see the show in its entirety. Just something to mull over. It only makes me disappointed because parts of 9/18/90 were released as a bonus disc during Road Trips, so there may never be a full release of one of *arguably* the most beautiful and excellent shows of the 90s'. Anyways, my DaP 37 is in San Leandro so hoping it crosses the Bay any day now :))))

Just to respond to an earlier comment, if you are a subscriber, there's a good chance you never got a shipping notification *I personally didn't*. However, if you check the order status there's a good chance it's already been shipped. Good luck!

VIEWTIFUL_ALAN, I have not received mine either. Shipping on 36 was a complete disaster for many, hope this isn't the case for 2021.

Shipping status still indicates not shipped.

this is the absolute truth:

last night I dreamed there was one of these community Rhythm Devils sessions. Jerry was participating, and I was too. What was really weird was that Jerry was wearing a Jamaican tam on his noggin.

it was pretty cacophonic. but i got to play.

20 minutes of those RDs...stay on target Proudfoot...stay on target...

I kvetched about the nearly 20 minute Space from 6/19/94 recently...

THANK YOU DAVE!!!

My shipping notice came a couple days ago. I have subscribed every year since they first started them and am glad that Dave and company have been mixing it up (except nothing from 90s yet).

I actually just started listening to Dave's Picks 36 having waited since getting it months ago and the crowd energy and virtually perfectly crafted performances with Jerry's recovery and return are perfect for that release. My first post-coma shows were Alpine later that year in summer and they were epic. My timing of coming into the Dead and age demographic are pretty much the same as Dave's. My first show was in 84, then send one and third in 86. Alpine 87 was my third outing. By 89 I was finally hitting multiple tours and venue stops. It was a pretty exviting time to be a fan and witness their growth in real time from Jerry's recovery to the MIDI experiments of 89 and beyond.

A short few years later it was gone in a flash, but I sure enjoyed the ride while it was still cruising.....and still am.

I think I finally get where Dave's choices help to bring a rounded out experience to any ears that want to hear history.

LOL, I can’t believe how much I’ve become attached to the seaside chats! Almost as much as some of the releases lol.
I could totally see just sitting around a bar with Dave and a couple other Dead nutz, hockey game on in the background, arguing about the Dead....maybe I’ve just been cooped up too long lol.
The man sure can sell that’s for sure! He takes some of these shows that I’m sorta nonplussed about and gets me psyched. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled for each and every release, but we all have hopes for “those” shows (thinking of you HF lol), so some releases provide different levels of let’s say, individual enthusiasm. Dave makes em all special!
Good job eh! PLEASE, keep em coming!
And yes, thanks to all the Dead/rhino crew for all ya do, especially Marye.
Now if only we could choose our shipping method, ahem...

Interesting about clarifying that partially released stuff is from shows that won’t get full treatment/release. Makes sense to me, and it’s good to know what’s what etc. Wonder about “there’s no master list”...I think they they might not have a “set list” made up, but there’s probably a master “song list” that their choosing from of what he said; good shows that we have good tapes of”
You’d think there’d be some discussion or ruff drafts of certain things I.e., June 76, or Fillmore 69, or E72...
Let’s face it though, unfortunately there will be limits as to what/when shows will come out.

SHIPPING NOTICES; many of you have inquired about lack of notices etc. personally I’ve had releases where I didn’t get one at all, or got one about the time it arrived, or even after. Received one this time and if there’s no snafus with the PO/shipping labels etc mine should be here early next week. 🤞
But hey, As long as they show up.....mayor Jim and some others still haven’t received 36, and unfortunately i think there’s some folks still trying to hunt down others...
I guess every silver linings got a touch of gray...

FUTURE: was a little bummed he didn’t at least tease us with “future” info. Like will we get an WOTF anniversary release as HF thinks, and of course the million dollar question; what’s in the box? I think it’s fun for all of us to have some tid bit of information to speculate about, (GIVE IT UP DAVE), like the recent 80s rumors...Unfortunately I don’t think we’re getting a WOTF 50th this year. My interpretation of the accelerated release schedule is more about the last few since if they went the full 50 years half of us could be dead. But I hope I’m wrong! ; )

Okay, please Mr postman!

EDIT: Crow, you are one funny mofo, thanks!

Say you that it's no WOTF 50th till 2023?? I'm so old my CD player remote finger is getting creaky...

I think they want to keep the 50th thing rolling and we'll have it by mid-year. And because Dave wants a two-disc companion show, it'll be ... oh well, I have ranted for too long and y'all know my rap.

I'm less enamored than some on Dave's sea side, squishy-toed schpiels... I fast forward to the last couple minutes to see if he drops a box-related tidbit. He's keeping his powder dry (as I tried to at many rainy shows) as this is only the end of January. By the next DP, he'll say something. Then Bolo will jack us around! All in good fun.

After reading show reviews of 4-15-78 on the Setlist Program, I'm pretty psyched for this release. And when 2 1/2 hours of music is considered a "short" show, it reminds me of the good old daze, when that meant a four-hour excursion, not to mention the adventure of getting safety to and from the shows, which in my case is a relative concept. (Englishtown, lost my ride, found some cardboard and rolled up into it for the night, caught a ride straight to my door the next day...)

Oro -- at one time I beseeched everyone to live in the moment and stop speculating. And here I am, the very worst cannonball-into-the-pool nutcase. So it goes................

No message, tracking number...no clue...& there it was on my porch. What a nice weekend surprise for a cold and wet Friday...hope all are safe and well.....

I have just snuck through the door and ordered a copy of this one, seemingly without any problems. First time I have not subscribed. Weirdly, it feels more satisfying buying it this way, although I may end up paying more if I get them all, and I will of course miss out on the bonus disc. But it feels as if I have chosen to buy this show myself. Increasingly, with the subscriptions, I was starting to feel as though someone else was deciding what I bought, and was picking shows I wouldn't myself have chosen. This way, I feel I am getting back to getting what I decide to get.
Of course, if you want everything, its not a problem, and you are probably better off subscribing.

Based on the Listening Party, this is a fantastic sounding recording! Great job by Betty. Just based on that little bit sounds like she got a better mix than DaP 7 and 15 from the following week. Could be my ears fooling me, just sounds like one of her better tapes. Love the filler, especially cutting the 18 min Drums down to what I assume is the lead into Samson. Really interested to hear Scarlet> Dancing, will wait til it arrives and not listen to one on the Archive. Also digging that 4/12/78 is still a possibility for future release.

Picked up one of the glasses and a tshirt (burnt orange is one of my favorite colors, especially for a shirt, so they had my money right there), as well. Wonder if all this year's Picks will have a glass, or if they just really liked that cover, which, it is one of the best covers in the

PS if you do listen to the Listening Party, listen out for Jack a Roe teases in Let It Grow. Heard it while typing and was pretty cool.

Hi All, I hope everyone is doing well. I have haven't commented in a while as I have been navigating through some work and other events. So we knew what this show was going to be and I am quite excited for it. It looks like it will be high energy. Of course with it being a Betty Board, that just adds to it.

I am equally excited for the generous portion of the Pittsburgh show we are getting as well. First, any time we get this much filler its always welcome. Second, I had made a comment many months ago when this was revealed to be the 1st show in the 2021 subscription run, that we should take guesses at what show the extra material would be pulled from. Dave L described that it would come from a good but under the radar show. I am fairly knowledgeable on 1978 GD, but I have gaps when comes to listening to specific tours. I did not know much about the spring tour. When I was consulting the Deadbase as to which show it could be, I hoped for the Pittsburgh show. This is not because of my hometown bias, but the 2nd set looked intriguing. The Scarlet > Dancing segue seems unique especially for the time period. I don't think of Scarlet not being paired with Fire back then. I know eventually it would occasionally be on its own or paired with other songs. Still I always I think of it paired with Fire from 77-79, so this looks cool. Regardless, I am looking forward to getting Vol. 37. I got my shipping notice a few days ago but it hasn't arrived yet.

Stay safe and well everyone and hopefully soon we'll all be spinning this fine music.

Some funny stuff in these threads.. pretty positive so far..

I'm with Oroborous, the seaside chats amuse me and do get my blood pumping in anticipation. I am stoked to hear the cleaned up, pristine sounding NFA>Jam>Morning Dew.. I still can't get over how good the Dew they snuck into #29 at the end of the Swing was. These incredible sounding Betty Board Morning Dews are phenomenal, I will gladly take any I can get my grubby little paws on.. but there are so few to be had.

I do have a piece of troubling news, however. It appears while breaking down his camera equipment and tripod, Dave was attacked by an angry mob of sea otters. You would not think this to look at them because they are so playful and cute, but sea otters are short tempered marine mammals with strong teeth and a powerful bite.. and apparently have been clamoring for 1969 for some time with no success.

Join me in wishing Dave a complete and speedy recovery.

Ignore sea mammals at your own peril people..

As a freshman in college, my good friend Phil Epstein and I hitchhiked from New Paltz, NY 4/14/78 to Williamsburg. We had seen Garcia Band, but this was to be our first GD show. The next day was parents day on campus at William and Mary, and the khakis and blue blazers were roaming and staring at the tie-dyed invasion. The show was high energy. The band was on it. The crowd excited. A thoroughly satisfying show! Last week my friend Phil and I were excited about the release of DP37, as this was our first show, and it was epic. As the universe would have it, Phil passed away suddenly last Sunday. This is dedicated to his memory. RIP.

Not only would you have loved Phil, a truly beautiful person, but he would have loved you back. Would have given you his shirt if you were cold, his water if you were thirsty. We had seen hundreds of shows since W&M, and he was the guy you never met, but smiled and high-fived you after Jerry just blew our minds...huge smile on his face...the epitamy of what a Deadhead and generous soul should be. My profile pic is my $6 stub from 4/15/78...
