We just saw DSO at the El Rey in Los Angeles recently... what a great time! While it is not the same thing as seeing the Dead, it was even more fun than some of the last shows I saw... it's like seeing the Dead in a small (tiny) venue! Plus DSO busted out a scorching Lazy Lightning, Viola Lee Blues and a St. Stephen! These guys really do the music justice while not looking too much like a corny tribute band. "Beatlemania" this is not!

My wife and I went to two festivals last summer, and DSO kicked off both of them. I could not believe how spot-on they were and how much care they took in handling the tunes of the Dead. The night before All Good in W.V., they did an incredible set, with fireworks popping over the stage ever 15 minutes or so. Really, really special. If you get a chance, download that show off of Archive.org. “Let there be songs to fill the air.”

I got this from DSO site... Posted on: February 14, 2008 Grateful Dead sound engineer Dan Healy will be joining Dark Star Orchestra to mix the band’s sound beginning Friday, February 16 at DSO’s House of Blues Cleveland performance through the final tour stop in Langerado. Dan Healy mixed the Grateful Dead from 1968 through 1994 and has done sound for DSO on previous occasions, notably in October 2007 when Bob Weir joined DSO for a few sets at The Fillmore. Veteran DSO sound engineer Cameron Blietz needs to leave the road to heal chronic back pain, but will return to the mixing board for future tours. Peace, Gigi

Dark Star Orchestra to their fans: Dear DSO Fan – Thank you for joining us and being a part of this continuing, long strange trip these past 12 years. Your support and excitement for the music has kept us going strong for over 1700 shows. Throughout the years, we’ve had transitions both difficult and uplifting, yet the positive energy of our fan base has continued to propel our mission onward for performing this important music and for keeping this vibrant scene alive. That said, we, as a band are entering another chapter in this story. Dark Star Orchestra’s lead guitarist and one of its founding members, John Kadlecik, has decided to resign from DSO. John’s last show with us will be on December 5 in Buffalo. DSO is supportive of John’s choice and we wish him the very best. Dark Star Orchestra will continue to bring you this music at its highest level. In our 12-year history we have gone through three drummers, three keyboard players, three bass players and numerous rhythm guitarists and we have always managed to keep improving the sound and the experience. We will be taking on a new player with his own talents and energy and turn yet another chapter in DSO history. Veteran guitarist Jeff Mattson of the Zen Tricksters and Donna Jean Godchaux Band, will be joining us this week, on the New Year’s run, Jam Cruise, and for our upcoming Winter Tour that begins in February. We assure you all the things you love about the Dark Star Orchestra experience will continue, and we ask for your patience, friendship and positive energy as we keep truckin’ on… Dark Star Orchestra

I think Stu Allen is THE Jerry Guitarist out there....vocally and musically...here's a link to a show I recorded a month or 2 ago...it's a SBD feed mixed with a lil Audience to add to the ambiance. The show's smokin hot. http://www.archive.org/details/schwag2009-09-19.sbd.mtx (listen to Standing on the Moon if you only have time for one) "In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head. Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul."

anyone seen DSO since John left the band?I haven't gotten the chance to hear the new lineup yet, and I'm curious to say the least... I'm weighing Grateful Fest vs. the July 2 Furthur show, & a review of DSO's new guitarist would make my decision leaps and bounds easier!

I will be attending both these shows on 4-1 and 4-2. I will be coming down from Seattle area (due to work constraints, cannot attend shows in Bellingham or Seattle). Looking for someone to share ride down Friday afternoon, and/or probable return late Sunday afternoon. I'll drive and provide tunes; you provide good company. Also looking for people to meet before shows for dinner, drinks, etc. Contact me here or at tiedyehigh@gmail.com.Thanks, and enjoy the music. "Whatever comes to pass Will just pass right on away"

Very discouraged by DSO and some states decision to do drive in radio broadcast with no amplifiers. How can you enjoy live music without feeling it in your body?

Is this correct or will there be amps?

Play it LOUD!!!

Rob Barraco does not get enough praise. He has played great for years, is fairly versatile with Dead vocals, and damn if he doesnt smile the whole time he is playing. Agree with what you said. Zen Tricksters were great.

I love DSO I Love them so much I have 30 thirty out of 1300 thirteen hundred of their shows and the problem is I want and need more! I’m trying to just collect Digital Soundboards not digital Audiences not that the DAUDs are bad it’s because I’m certain the board recordings are out there somewhere I just gotta keep turning over all the fricking rocks to find their whereabouts is all and that can be stressfully and fun! So hey u got any?

Curious how DSO sounds with Jeff Mattson on guitar. Haven’t seen them since John left, and I’m debating between Grateful Fest or the July 2 Furthur show. How’s the new lineup holding up?

DSO with Jeff Mattson has been solid! He brings a lot of depth and a slightly different feel than John, but still stays true to the classic Dead vibe. His playing has that rich, psychedelic warmth with a bit more of an exploratory edge. Vocally, he fits in well, though John had a unique style that some fans miss.

As for your choice—Grateful Fest will give you a full-on jam experience with multiple sets, whereas the July 2 Furthur show will have its own magic with Bobby and Phil. If you're really into DSO’s take on the Dead, Grateful Fest might be the better option, but if you’re looking for the closest thing to the original lineup, Furthur is the way to go. Either way, you’ll get some great music!
