What are you doing to my levels man. I'm gonna scream in the microphones all night long if you fuckin touch my levels man.

oofa - I had totally forgotten about that classic someone-is-wired-hot exchange before Shakedown.

Funny that there are no upgraded/decent boards for first 2 nights and no SBD at all for night 3. I heard about '82 Rain Rocks first at a party night before Alpine in that run from gal who attended. Hadn't really seen her since jr. high and some 9 or so years later she's a head. Her crew skipped Manor Downs much to their subsequent regret but saw Zoo, Starlight, and Kiel.

In the end the only way I can really "judge" a show is a dedicated listen with no real distractions and preferably on headphones in the right head space. Which isn't all that easy in terms of time and opportunity.

I have trouble with that too.. I seem to always be doing something, well.. complicated, in environments where I either get questions or really have to focus.

But I cannot complain, I get in enough.. Got 8/21&22/68 Fillmore West in on the 22nd, something '74 yesterday on the river and most of 10/8/89 Hampton today on SiriusXM radio (was at that one). I thought about doing Two From the Vault, 8/24/68 at the Shrine Exposition Hall in LA today.. might get to it, but I am seeing some local live music after dinner tonight. Free at the local ski resort every Wednesday.. lots of GD cover type and Bluegrass. Typical mountain music.

Anyway.. yes, listening environment is key and the more responsible I become (not purposeful), the less control I seem to have on my listening situation.

I’m going with 4 of 11. CM transfer, doesn't list who taped?
The Jim Wise/CM sounds ok, but I think this one might be more balanced frequency wise?
Doesn’t seem to be a good SB.

I think part of my lackluster attitude toward the 27th was the sound of the SB I went with?
It was pretty thin and perhaps overly tinny?
I think the rain put a damper on things too (pun intended).
There is a fun On the Road Again, and that whole second set extended stuff is good, but
I think the August stuff is just so good comparatively…

EDIT: 7/28/82: I liked this one much better, but I was able to pay better attention etc?
Not a GOAT, but a fine Shakedown opener, BIODTL (luckily I never tire of this Bob song), a rocking GSET (listen to Phil hit those opening cords), followed by more standard fare, but then a hot Big RR (another I haven’t grown tired of), with a nice Lightnin/Supplication, and a Deal to end a great set. Second first half part is a little different set list followed by more normal order post drums, except with a Spanish Jam, always a welcome song, along with a fine Baby Blue encore!
The Aud was pretty decent but I realized it’s this cobbled together set up I’m using on the job site that’s thin/tinny, so perhaps dont let my comments about the 27 scare ya off. I do think the 28 is better though?
Ok, onward (through the rain & Fog) to the 29, going to try the Frank S Aud as no decent SBs here either…

I hear you OB, sometimes it is hard to get them in with the old job. I run in to that a lot.

I remember when I was 18 in 89 and wanted to join the circus and keep touring after Alpine and then reality set in, I didn't have the money to do it. Regrets.

DV/Listening

Equipment can matter, but I’m suffering more from work distractions.
Sometimes I can really get in the groove and both the music and the work flows in tandem, other times, and unfortunately this seems to happen more as o get older, it’s more in the background . Maybe I need some entheogen therapy to defrag the neural pathways?
Either way I can usually get a good feel at least for the show. I might miss some of the specifics, but I can usually feel the vibe etc.
5/5 was good, I’m just hung up and thus comparing to some of those top shelf April shows, like DaP 37!

Same with 7/27/82: not the best listen, seemed ok, but not up to some of the August shows…
Hopefully today I’ll have better luck with the 28&29?

5/5/78 is definitely worth checking out if you haven't yet. I thought the performance and sound quality of the recording were both really good. The show rocked. Promise Land, Dire Wolf, Candyman,Passenger, all good first set versions. They start the second set with Bertha, Good Lovin, the Estimated Eyes and Stella Blue, Around and Around are the highlights of the second set. I like these Werewolves of London encores, good way to close it out.
Glad you gave it a go OB, the equipment we use always makes a difference. I typically listen to these shows through my Sonos play five.

I hear ya, It was the same for me only in like 77/78. If they would of played locally I could of been on the Big bus a year earlier...such is life.
(Big bus being after seeing live, versus little bus being stuck listening in my teenage room wishing I could see them live!)

6/20/74 Cool show!

Awesome “sequence”, interesting Slipknot; JG and Kieth are super tight, but Phil and Bob sit out. Not exactly the kind of song you fake lol.
Sound was all over the place; sometimes great, sometimes things were over saturated...

I saw the EBike pull away.. pig tails flowing under the swirled, dayglow helmet. She turned to look.. and then was gone. Again, many thanks from all of us for all you do.

6/20/74, good show. Agree OB, the recording is a bit uneven, some parts great, others not as good. Overall B on the sound quality. Seemed kind of a short show for 74. Good pick PF.

3/31/80 the other Capitol

The first Feel Like A Stranger 41 years ago today. So let me throw 3/31/80 into the ring for today’s pick.
My one time to the Capitol Theater was 1972(?) to see NRPS. Dr John opened the show. Quite the rowdy audience, ha ha.

Stranger

One of the great late era songs. I don't think I am alone in saying this tune made sense or had a calming effect on that point in the show where the ceilings and walls become liquid and there is at least a little concern that they might turn to goo and begin dripping down the sides of the coliseum/shed/theatre/area/stadium or wherever the hell you were when the shit really started to hit the fan.

And I love that song for that effect. It's going to be alright, now let's get on with the show.

So many great minglewoods. 5/28/77 comes to mind as well as 10/3/87. But there are so many more. Always a rocker. And the version from Ladies and Gentlemen from April 71 lights it up.

with Dr. ProudFoot - 6/16 Playing is one of the greatest. love it love it love it. another favorite from that year is the first October night at Winterland, 10/16.

yes like a moth to the psychedelic flame of '74. that Omni show on 6/20 was new to me too, despite looking at the set list for years in my raggedy ass deadbase. listened yesterday and thought whole show was excellent. yep a little short for the year, some tape wobble and speed issues maybe set II. no matter. Trucking and Eyes were the bomb. Something about the Slipknot jam reminded me of a Celtic fiddle tune, which was not something I've ever associated Slipknot before. The China Doll was gorgeous. hopefully any tape issues can be ironed out for a release.

I think Bolo has officially announced the Alphabet Box Series and the end date for vault material releases.

Each year for the 20 (no venues starting with X, Q, Z,...) or so years we will get a box of all releasable shows based on the first letter of the venue, after the alphabet is completely exhausted.. all the worthy shows will have been released, Dave will retire and that's it. This is great news, the "A" box released on October 31st is going to be spectacular.

The down side.. I am going to be old as dust by the time RFK '73 gets released. An alternate box concept is the Everything Box where every show in the vault would be remastered and released as a giant treasure chest. (#StormTheVault #FeeTheReels)

Edit: The final box would be a three show box for Zoo Amphitheatre, 1981, 1982 and 1985.

As for my run for Senate.. My only shot is a devastating scandal followed by resignation.. so long as you two stay away from under age girls while crossing state lines, your seats are safe.

Luckily, insurance covers all but $100 of the replacement.
