Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

    Don’t think so DV?
I just checked the ABCD list and didn’t see it?
Wonder if Big Red was pestering him to release it?
I mean, hey, if any of us had inside access, would we not petition Dave?

I agree though DV, bit of a head scratcher. Yeah it’s a good show, but there’s some real obvious ones that most folks would consider better…but I’ve spewed my picky DH pontificating negativity enough and will I’m sure, get a few good listens out of it before it joins the ever increasing good, but not go too club.
Let’s hope he’s just jerking our chain about “we don’t save things” and is just trying to evenly dole out the goods on the 169 year plan?
I dig the Capitals, but that’s almost like a different year compared to after KG was hired, so hard for me to compare…

How’d you guys like that 84? Maine always seems to be one of “those” places.
Heard this one not too long ago, and will definitely hit it next year!

Still think #48 is an odd pick. I listen to 71 shows fairly often. Pretty sure the Pauly Pavilion show was part of ABCD returned reels. The Port Chester shows are probably my favorite shows of the year, but there are clearly other great shows. That November Austin show is fantastic.

Heard someone mention on another thread that they didn't really like Dave's #21? We all have different tastes, that is for sure, but this is one of my favorite releases they have put out. This really reinvigorated my desire to listen to more Dead. I mean the Rex recording is phenomenal. The Boston Garden in April 73 must have been quite the scene.

Have it going now in fact and the China Rider is one of the best of 73, to my ears.

    Stay well out there.

Would love to see some more fall 89 released. However, the way things have been going, I think Dave is on a 169 year plan.
And don't forget those July Alpine shows.

So much to release and time is ticking away.

Maybe I still look young since I hadn’t totally sold my soul to the man yet and started 16 years of hard prison time : (

Yep, we need Jim to get that arm working again, so he can get his paddle on, so he’ll be happy, and thus come here and make us all happy with his good vibes! ; ) JK, know how much it means to you so hoping for a full recovery!

Hit 2/10&11/89 today, and might go for a DHB and hit the last night on the 12th..
Besides some of the spring tour, I’m not familiar with first half of 89.
These were ok, feel like they got better as they go/early part of year etc?
Gonna try to hit 89 hard next year…

FALL 89: why are those awesome multitracks just rotting in the vault FFS…
I’d say a tasty box, and look Dave, I already did the work!

    10/9&10/89: released

10/11&12/89: ok, but since something would need to be cut, I’d choose these…
*10/14/89 is worthy and prolly best of Jersey sans 10/16…
10/15/89: runner up, depending on box size, or good DaP
    10/16/89: released. Ridiculously under rated!

10/18/89: only tour Shakedown. Runner up depending on size, or would be good DaP
*10/19/89: definitely needs to come out!
*10/20/89; ditto, might even be better? Cali Quake!

    10/22/89: runner up depending…?
    *10/23/89: Attics and Cali Quake…

*10/25/89; not the best show of tour, but should get in for inclusion purposes if nothing else?
    10/26/89: released

9/29;89 could be a DaP…since the above make a good size box, think spring 90 etc…

Now I am jumping though the hoops and eating valuable time and deductible coinage fighting my way though the system. It happened mid-summer and I'm not that close to getting the MRI that will tell the world that in fact, one of the tendons in my rotator cuff is torn. Something I have known since mid-July. A part of my thinks they drag things out to get double the deductible offset than they would if they could treat the damned thing in a single year.

Is this what Deep Elem Blues is about? Oh sweet mama, daddy's got those Deduct Elem(ble) Blues? Nevermind, even my terrible sense of humor isn't working.

BobT Nice TLMD on there and enjoyed that Touch of Grey this AM. I'll try and grok the whole thing.

The cats at Dead Air played a new source of 4/11/69 last night.
EPIC Dark Star > Main Ten > Dark Star.
Crazy good, hadn't heard that in awhile.
Well worth dustin' off.

And Doc is pushing 4/12/71 as an underrated gem, so there's that too.

Meanwhile I've found myself in a big huge NRPS jag.
Finally getting around to giving the Dawn Of The NRPS a proper listen.
So cool that this shiz keeps creeping out from under the rocks, shoeboxes and behind the curtains.
This is an amazing release for GD & NRPS nerds, like me.

In my fever I noticed that there's a NRPS SBD from 9/20/70.
I haven't been able to track it down on the digital highway, not sure it's circulating. But it's out there!
Anybody on here got it?
Trying to lay my ears on both 9/18/70 & 9/20/70 NRPS.

The hunt is on.
Fun stuff!

EDIT: Found 'em. Happy kid here!

I drove to Golden Gardens at Puget Sound
Entered a parking space
I see a bill of money on the ground in front of me
And a guy working out the back of his car to my right
His lil table had batik GD dancing bears tapestry
I pick up bill it is a 20
"You drop this 20?" I ask guy
"No"
I think for a second
"Everyone wins. Lets split it"
I give him two 5's

Cool event, bro

This is nice, funny. Bluegrass based about dead tickets

https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=t8xVXL7sB0o&list=RDAMVMt8xVXL7sB0o

If anyone has good collection of these guys let me know. I'm about to go searching.

Proudfoot - funny about the money, I do the same thing a lot at the store I work. All night long (ok several times a night) I go out and check the lot, check lights on front of store, pickup garbage) Ok, really to burn one. But because it night, the lights of the store reflect across the lot as I pace back and forth I find change every night,,, mostly pennies, but silver too. Every now and then I turn up decent money, 20's, 10's, crumbled 1's (the meth heads). Found 70 bucks once, a fifty or two, chunk of 20's. Always come in and split with co-conspirator,,, I mean co-worker. Found money shared is still found money:-)

Oh, and even further back off subject,, Jim,,,, did you really climb the Devil's Tower?

Bluecrow was there. At the time he felt it had its moments, for sure, but it wasn't Hampton. Earlier today was first time he's listened to whole show since that night. Going back in for a second go round. Nice sounding board. Thanks for this DD BobT. Really nice Stella Blue. And oh yeah - its got a "Drummers Birthday!!"

I'm just a tad behind here.. trying to ride Doc's '71 coattails which has been much more enjoyable than I would have guessed. Right vibe, right time, and getting both a historical perspective and some personal stories, memories and notes. Oh.. and some killer GD. I always liked the crunchy sound of hard driving April 1971 GD.

Yes to Devils Tower, but back when I was young, thin and in much better shape than now. It took two attempts.. the first day we only made it halfway up and had to leave a bunch of gear on the cliff and rappel off in a moment of defeat. As the day went on, we struggled and the tower makes one hell of a sun dial signaling to us that it was just not in the cards that day. Our vacation was over, out of time as my brother had to get back to work. We conceded to the closest food and beer joint (a BBQ place), it was a little slow and our hot waitress came over with an acoustic guitar and played for us while we licked our wounds. By the end of the night she convinced us all to give it another go, so the plan was to get my brother to call in 'sick' for work that following Monday and we took an extra day for a redemption attempt. Up early and more than a little groggy, sounded better when the beer was flowing. Of we went and by early afternoon we were at the top playing hacky sac until these horrible biting flies began to go to town on our flesh. So we rappelled off and began our cross country drive home.

I would guess it to be August 24th or 25th 1990. The car battery died somewhere in the Tetons that trip, so every time we turned off the engine we had to push start the car (it was a stick shift, remember those??). We coasted into a gas station not far away from East Troy WI on the night of the 27th and there were all these freaks at the gas station.. we struck up conversation and they were all mourning discovering the news that Stevie Ray Vaughan's helicopter had crashed killing all as he was leaving Alpine Valley. In looking into this again, it must have been very late or very early the next morning, we were 5 or 10 miles away from the venue and people at the gas station had left the show and clued us into what happened. Weird and sort of GD related as the ending centers around of the Dead's more beloved late era venues. Alpine kicked ass.

I visited the place in the summer of 2018 and got winded taking the trail around the monolith. Time and age can be cruel.. but at least we have memories of youth.

Proudfood.. glad you got the $20 I left.. sorry about the scratch on the Prius, hope the $10 covers the touch up paint. :D Just getting back to live after a few busy days.. I will check out the 75 show later this week in your honor.

Bolo, not many live to tell tales after getting on Lemieux's naughty list. The rat bastard has thwarted each and every attempt to storm, tunnel under and move the vault to our new undisclosed location in the control room under an abandoned cold war missile silo in rural Kansas. Ooooops, I think I said too much. Do you ever wonder what happened to all those people that don't post here anymore? Prisoners in the medieval dungeon below the vault.

1992 subaru, I love you.
Yeah, I know... I need a new car.
But can't say I've done much driving this year.

Alright, so what's the pick?

I heard about some 1971 from Doc that sounded worthy.
Checking out the NRPS from 9/20/70 and this is a killer SBD.

Hmmm, which way to go.

As spoken from on high.. 4/14/71 got some glowing accolades from the good doctor on the Dave's 37 thread. I am taking that trip today. I have not listened to many of these April '71 shows and am enjoying them immensely.

How are things going out there folks, hopefully everyone is making the best of things and enjoying themselves. I read this morning in my amateur malingerer's handbook that April 14th is national leave two hours early from work for a fictitious dental emergency day. Be sure to do something fun with it.

I wonder, yes I wonder.

But Jim asks Have You Seen The Light and to that I say Yes!

I have and it's bright.
A bright bright light.

I'm goin' 4/14/71 too cuz I, like Jim, read Doc's write up and thought, I need to hear that... again.

But unlike Jim, I will not be participating in fake a dental appointment day due to the absence of a boss.
I'll just take a personal day and tell my self, self... take a personal day and listen to the Grateful Dead play.

Got it?
Good Morning People.

Love it GOGD.

You are taking the whole day off.. As an amateur malingerer, I only aspired two hours off. I clearly have a lot to learn.

As a side note, I am hoping in 10 or 15 years 2/3 of the country will be skipping out early on April 14th each year to "go to the dentist." Everybody needs at least one get out of work free card each spring.

Never heard of this one,,,, is this like national hookie day? Where everyone skipped school (it was legal, being NHD).

Well I can't cut or skip being in a essential service industry. But I CAN make it a green night! Not sure if that counts for 2 hours early or day off?

I WILL be playing 4/14/71 tonight. I poked that a little this morning and I seem to have a damn good copy.

Bingo town 4/12 was awesome, first time tripping at a show....hey, I was a late bloomer ; )
4/15 Crotchfester was good too, though I haven’t heard that one in awhile. GA front row for both, voooooooo!

We might have done this one early on.. if not, I have listened to within the last year so I am doing the highlights portions. This one is shaded by neighboring giants but has some nice highlights. Plus, I have a soft spot for Roanoke and that portion of Appalachia. Close to Virginia Tech (home of the Hokies), the New River - one of the oldest rivers in the world and lots of fun stuff in between. A sleepy little mountain city. I have fond memories of times I spent nearby a few decades ago by now. We're getting old...

Jim, wild story. I have a little history with Devils Tower myself. I worked in northeast Wyoming in August 1974 for three weeks as a roustabout on the oil field. I was 20 and it was one helluva an education. I was hitchhiking cross country back to Eugene, Oregon and needed money. The dudes from Illinois who gave me a ride in South Dakota were going to Wyoming for work so I bit the baagwahn and went for it. After working for most of August I had a couple days to kill before collecting severance pay so hitched from Gillette to Devils Tower to illegally camp outside of the National Monument (private land?) with a spectacular view of the tower and a full moon.
I wasn’t disappointed.

Please don’t tell my Mother I work in the oil field,
She still thinks I’m a piano player in a whorehouse.

It's officially been a year hanging with you all, what a long strange trip it's been huh?!?

After lurking around for a few picks, I decided to step out and participate, super glad I did.
I've learned a lot, made some pals, swapped stories, shared quite a few laughs, made some killer trades, and have heard some great music and gone furthur into the GD catalog than I had before.
And one of the best parts is being a part of this GD community.
Community is key, and the GD community, is above all a very special one.
In a crazy world, when all was spiraling, twirling and careening off the edge.
I went back to my roots and enjoyed the ride with some friends and The Good Ole Grateful Dead.
I'm super glad I did.
It too was a Friday.

To all of you here and Dead Heads everywhere, I salute you. We're on the right track.

I guess the obvious pick would be 4/16/72 or possibly 9/20/88 (I heard Charlie Miller refer to this show as his favorite that he attended).
Besides they've got Cumberlands.

Together, more or less in line... we just keep Truckin' on.
Happy Friday!

Right on GOGD!

I am going to go for the 9/20/88 show. Never heard this one. Thanks for the picks.

Been thinking when they will give us that fantastic last run in Alpine in July of 1989.
Downhill from Here, released in 1997, still sounds unreal. I think these three shows are the best of the July run. The crowd was just unreal for those three days and so were the boys. And I was just a clueless eighteen year old. Wish I could go back in time to these three shows. First thing I would do is find myself and hand me a list of all the mistakes to avoid in the next 30 years. Anyway, I know almost all of the July shows have been released, but these still are a notch above. I also need to check out the Deer Creek Show before they hit Alpine. Anybody heard this show?

So, box up Alpine with three full night's of Video and watch the site go down.

Stay well out there folks.

Congrats Bolo!

Best bumper sticker I ever saw was on a big old pickup truck said “wine me dine me 69 me” which was funny enough but when I pulled up to the red light beside it, it was being driven by a very elderly looking little old lady who could barely see over the steering wheel!

GOGD: sounds like your leaving us or something? This is Hotel California bubba, you can check out but....

BOLO: the world has enough Bozos already and not enough Bolos! Congrats. One thing (so far) I miss about not having kids...no grandkids : (
Think I would of liked being a Boompa, if only we could of skipped a step lol.

9/20/88: looks interesting and with THAT recommendation I’ll have to put it on my list...did do 4/15/71 today which I really liked.
On to my new RT 2.3 plus bonus. Been mostly sleeping and not up for loud after getting stuck. So missed a couple days but we’re slipping back into the mix here slowly.

I also adopted a Newcastle, English Geordie expression many years ago; “Fuck me blue damn it!.” Used in the right setting at the right time has great social and political import.

Holy crap, this is a great show. Louie Louie! Nice Althea, Peggy O. TMNS to end the first set. Then we get a nice Bertha, Cumberland to start the second set. Need to finish this one up tomorrow and will definitely polk around the other MSG shows from this run.

Thanks GOGD.

These guys are pretty damn good.

Anybody else getting excited for Dave's 38?
