R.A.M.O.N.E.S., for instance, was written for the actual Ramones to record... and I think they might have actually done so. He wrote lyrics for Ozzy, and others, too, but 1916. I think he won a Grammy for that, didn't he?

wishing everyone a relaxing Sunday. a good day to play some electric Jerry on the Eel. congratulations Bolo on the grandbaby(!!) and to everyone getting their double dose of vaccine on (yay!!) been spending a lot of outdoor time. early-growing-season yard /garden is very happy, nicest in years. garlic is going strong and going to have a few apricots (most frosted) and one little tree of peaches(!!), and maybe some almonds(!!!) more often than not these all get taken by a late frost here. first real camping trip for a long while this past week with my sweetheart out by the Henry Mtns, last surveyed mtn range in the lower 48, with some insanely cool laccolith action along the south flank of Mt. Hillers. so good for the heart and soul to be out there enjoying the long view.
was really enjoying DaP 36 in the truck. Like the old days spinning '87 while on the road.

ROCKTHING; liked your synopsis of 35. That Red Rooster certainly is a Bobbie Dazzler eh! The mid eighties can be an acquired taste that many unfortunately don’t like. Personally, I really like em, cocaine worts and all, kinda like the way doc likes 71. It was pretty much full throttle locomotion time which meant that yes, there could be some train wrecks, and JG probably had more issues than other years, but the energy that comes with the danger is insane! To be fully transparent, I’m extremely biased because it was my most psychedelic period as well as seeing many shows on the rail as GA was still happening.
Nothing like a huge bag of shrooms and being close enough to joke around with the boys! Those were the days!
If your looking for more spring 84, the next night in Philly is hot, and I was at 4/16&4/17 so can say their at least worth a listen. I was at 10/20/84 and can recommend that one, but don’t go near a Aud version as the sound in the carrier dome was always atrocious. Definitely go SB. Augusta is a must.
85 is perhaps the year closest to my heart. Admittedly situational factors are a big influence on my feelings about 85. Perhaps the last year of true madness before it all got too big and went too far? Again, not for everyone but you should at least check out summer tour some time. I did the whole anniversary tour thing here last year. (You could go back and check my two cents if your so inclined).
But 6/25/85 that PF proposes is a good one and the one that kinda surprised me the most overall last year.
The 30 Trips Riverbend (6/24) is probably the gold standard as far as overall consistency etc. (and I think it sounds pretty good as I’m not hung up on it’s being “a cassette”) but there is a fierce contingent of us that love Toga, Hershey, and Merriweather. If nothing else the 6/30 Shakedown Street is a MUST listen!
It’s easy to blow off certain years, but I feel that’s a big mistake. The band played for 30 years, not 5 or 6...
I used to suffer some what from this closed mindedness, but after hanging here with these good folks, I have learned to love every year, or have found every year has at least some great shows, there just different, like a 30 headed beast, that has the same body...
Yes some years have more worts than others, but I can find stuff wrong with any show from any year, if I want to.
I think it’s like riding deep powder in the trees...the trick is to look at the spaces between the trees, not the trees!

POTD: going to try and get started on the big final stretch of April 71; the Fillmore’s
4/24 was good, but it felt a little laid back? It was subtle and you probably wouldn’t know it if you hadn’t done the whole month in order, thereby being more in tune with the nuances. I’m convinced now that it’s a must to do certain tours comprehensively and in order.
But after the last top notch five or six shows, and the crazy travel schedule they had, it’s easy to understand how they perhaps let off the gas a tad and enjoyed the warm afternoon southern scene.
Really stoked for this Fillmore run as I’ve only heard The Beach Boys show on XM once and the cut ups from Ladies & Gentlemen. Surely being back in NY, rolling tape for the album, and knowing the grueling travel is over, while being super tight from the tour, well I’m guessing this week is gonna be prime Dead!

Two Deadheads in the great southwest. I too have an heirloom peach tree ( set fruit) an apricot, and an almond tree. I grew the later two from seed and the peach (6”) I bought at 2nd Mesa Az about seven years ago. The peach is 8’ tall and produced a first solid crop of peaches last year. Looks good for this year.
I’ve had the almond tree a few years and it’s had a rough life , almost killed by deer. Now it’s about 4’ tall. It still hasn’t made almonds.
The almond tree still needs something more. I’ve decided to plant a second almond tree. Then they’ll be The Almond Brothers.

I hear of you play jammy music to your trees you get giant almonds. Might I suggest playing nothing but Dark Star to tree 1 and nothing but The Other One to tree two and in five years tell us which produced the larger and which produced the tastiest nuts.

Hope to - possibly best peaches I've ever had. Scraggly volunteer tree from a peach picked by a friend in a neglected near abandoned orchard in SW Colorado. Almost entire flesh is a deep purple.
I think I remember reading that most almonds need a an almond brother / sister to pollinate. Some are selfers. Mine is an old tree, at least 30 years old, on the place when I got here. Didn't know what it was until 2 years ago when it set a big crop of fruit for the first time in all my years here. Always thought it was an infertile apricot hybrid. I'm guessing its a selfer because I don't know of any others nearby. Flowering overlaps with the apricots so almost always production clipped by late frost. Scrub Jays went to town on the crop 2 years ago - it was fun to watch them pick out a nut, fly to a nearby tree and peck it open.
Listened to 4/25/71 yesterday - "very nice." More Fillmore today.
And the Henrys are pretty remote - just what the doctor ordered.

6/10/76, probably the least listened from this box so far for me and of the four Boston Music Hall shows from this run.
All these shows are great, can never get enough of Mission in the Rain. The finish is somewhat unique with that Playing, Dancing and US Blues.
So, they have one more Boston Music Hall show from this run not released. Why didn't this make it in the Box?
So far the two Beacon shows are a notch above for me.

Just wrapping up this show, and I enjoyed it! I think I actually prefer late-78 to Spring. High energy 1/2 Step>Franklins, a peppy Peggy-O, M&MU>Big River, slinky Estimated, hyper Eyes with a really cool jam leading into Drums. All in all, good pick, WIlfred! Thanks!
I will say though - that piano must have been black and blue after the pounding Keith was putting on it. Perhaps it was the source I chose, but he was mixed HIGH and those block chords came through loud and clear!

Great show WTJones. Post Egypt 78 has that real raw rocking vibe. No Shakedown in this one but there is a solid Stagger Lee. Great start with that 1/2 Step in Franklins. Recording is really good. I think I remember hearing a interview with Dr. Bob talking about this show. Bummer they moved the US Blues encore to the end of the first set. Agree Otis nice estimated into Eyes.

A Few Days Late...

Two suggestions for a pick today - 4/22/83 New Haven. I started this one on the "day of" last week, but only got through a bit. I really loved what I heard though! Stranger, Bird Song opening one-two punch! That's a hell of an opening duo. This show comes highly recommended by my good friend who knows these kind of things, and he has yet to lead me astray! Had not heard it in many years. Vaguely remember the bootleg cassette showing up in Missoula by the late 70s. The recording quality is stunning. Be there now. Cool coincidence ,I heard (rolling) thunder in the distance during the 17: minute mark on the Other One with Phil bombs at the same time. Those Dark Star people sure got a surprise (again) during the five night Fillmore run. The Morning Dew is so powerful it gives me chills up my spine. My old bootleg had a brutal chop/cut out at the crescendo . Skullduggery I say. Ladies and Gentlemen the Grateful Dead restored the complete song. What an amazing Dead concert. So focused and powerful it transcends time & space. Timeless music for the ages. (Read ; historians 50 years from now)

Here is to you Doc! What a great show! Best ever? That is in the eye of the beholder. Sound quality is A+. That is certainly something that has puzzled me throughout the years on how some came through smelling like roses and others, well they did not.
Love The Rub, King Bee, that Morning Dew is another top performer. Shortest Dark Star I have ever heard. St. Stephen is great and interesting. Strong finish.
And man, they sure beat the shit out of Truckin in 71.
Carlo, nice number, highest number I have seen so far. Enjoy it.
Guess that must mean #7 will be on the way at some point.

I was about to backtrack to 4/13, and 4/16/84, which I downloaded, but never had a chance to fully listen through, but I might hafta throw on the '71 Fillmore for the 4/29 anniversary. That was one of my earliest tapes, but I haven't heard it in ages. Otherwise, looks like I'm gonna be outa sync with you guys for a while, but I'm taking notes. ;)

Strider 808808: I've got a tiny potted almond on my rooftop patio. It looked like it was having a rough time last year, but seems to have almonds this year. It's barely 3 feet tall, but it had beautiful blossoms this year. I need to read up on what I should do. Normally I figure plants know how to grow themselves better than I know how to grow them, so I leav'em alone, mostly. Almond Brothers, though... groan/laugh :) Good one. I like JIMINMD's idea for the growing soundtracks.
DeadVikes: Interesting about that missing show from the '76 box set. I didn't pay much attention to that set 'cause I usually can't lay out for a big purchase like that. I hafta chip away an album or two at a time... and there's also international shipping... but anyway. That omission alone makes it a ripe pick.
OROBORUS: Exactly what you said, like, five pages ago... lol. Having not listened to as much from the mid-80s, '84 in particular, it's great to have some people who can point me in the right direction. Lotta shows in those years. I'm glad I'm finally finding my footing. RE: "The energy that comes with the danger," yeah I hear that. Well said. Working with, or around things can lead to some very creative decisions. I think I mentioned in my previous post how I finally realized that a lot of the energy actually coming as a result of some of Jerry's physical frailties. More jammin' I'm always down with that! I would never presume to judge anyone's personal choices, and that isn't the reason I haven't explored that era as much. Take it to the limit!
As I've said before, loving Jerry's silvery elf voice, a few experiences with croaky Jerry kind of bumming me out had made me "less enthusiastic" about collecting these tapes, but I would never say there's a Dead era I don't like. That 4/20 Scarlet Fire is amazing, yet completely different from the also amazing late 70s performances.
I've been slowly building up from a million gen second set only Cornell tape. Got lucky enough to have a buddy who's uncle was a taper, so I did have an 83 San Raphael, 6/29/86 Alpine Valley, and '88 Miami, Houston, Dallas that all came from him. Maybe that's where the 85 New Year show came from , too. The Formerly The Warlocks Hampton show must've come from a trade. Speaking of '71, got real into '71 after getting in on some tape trees with 2/18, 2/24 Capitol Theater, to 4/17 Princeton, to 4/29 Fillmore (is that what we're on today?), then probably came the Harpur College tape from '70 which got a ton of air time, and the wild '69 Big Rock Pow Wow. The King Biscuit tape arrived at some point. This was the 90s, so there were a few contemporary trees that kept me up to date, too. Got heavily into the primal 60s stuff when torrenting became big. Still slowly filling in the gaps when I've got time to lend my ears and sort through sources. Until this month, 4/19 Philly was somehow the only show from '84 I'd managed to get into my library, and I only added that a year ago. I had a handful of '83 shows and a handful of '85 shows, and I finally clicked with a couple '82 shows in the past year.
Notes: Let's see, 4/21 Philly, also back to add the 17th. 10/20 sbd. Ok. I'm a true believer in audience tapes, but I'll keep that in mind. :) :) :) 6/25/85... scrolled past several rave reviews while trying to figure out where I'd left off here. Interest is definitely piqued. 85 summer tour, in general, check. Then 6/24 and 6/30. Cool. That oughta keep me occupied for a while. :D
Also, not a skier, but that deep powder analogy is a keeper!

Starting to work through DaP 38, slow progress since I've never really been able to listen to music properly while I'm working, plus got distracted delving into 4/28 and 4/29 of '71.
The 71' is some fantastic stuff -- I've heard it all before at one time or another: the 4/29 Alligator sequence was my first or second bootleg back in college in '76 -- could have also been 6/19/76's Let it Grow/Dancin'/Cosmic Charlie sequence. Both of those are still around, on my gym MP3 player and in my car; the Hard to Handle is my favorite version, a Just Exactly Perfect (tm) handoff from Pigpen to Bobby to Jerry and back to Pig for the close. Later on, I got hold of the 4/28 Dark Star, a perfect, beautiful jewel of a version, from a Gans broadcast, I think, and eventually I acquired the whole 5 show series -- the 4/28 Other One is sublime, and there's lots of other fun stuff as well (Second that Emotion was a delightful surprise the first time I heard it).
BTW, my DaP 38 is #1856. I have no idea what that means -- seems to be random across releases...

Put on 4/29/71 last night, my own transfer from the Nth Generation Maxell I've had for thirty years... it actually wasn't too far along the tree... At first I thought maybe I'd forgotten to adjust the speed! lol. Mello~w start, so I thought maybe I should broaden my horizons and go check out 4/28 first. Man, this show is su~per relaxed, too. Was someone saying something about these shows being at the end of a long run... I mean, all I gotta do is look at the dates to see that, I guess.
Whoever was praising the recording (everyone!), truly unbelievable. It is weird how even <EDIT><<audience>> soundboard <EDIT> tapes can vary so much from night to night. I don't know who hit record on this, but I'd imagine Betty and Bob, for example, were experimenting with different approaches from night to night nearly as much as the band. Whoever it was , nailed it on this one! As much a die-hard audience tape fan as I am, I still love these early 70's boards where everyone is still so young, and giddy, and enjoyin' the hell out of it. You get to hear completely off mic things like an incredibly casual, "Whaddaya wanna do man?" before they settle on the next tune. The on-mic stage banter in this period is all gold. "How 'bout makin' this microphone work most of the time?" In fact, that may be what makes '71 so endearing to me, even more than the music. Just hearin'em talk so unselfconciously... or just hearing Jerry talk at all!
I like that Bobby is really clear in the mix, too. The guitars are separated nicely so that even at roughly the same level, they can both be made out. Bobby's always busy doin' his Bobby shix and it's a joy to hear it in this recording.

It was getting late, but on a piece of paper next to my computer I simply wrote, "Hard to Handle", and that seems to sum it up.
Oddly getting a little lost during the opening Cryptical, but regardless, major applause for tracking Cryptical, Drums, and The Other One as piece! I love that. I'd like to see more shows tracked that way. I've said it before, and no doubt I'll say it again. I know it doesn't matter when your streaming... actually it does matter when you're streaming, 'cause there's a short pause between every single track, and when you've got Song > Jam > Different Jam > Drums > Back Into That First Song, that's a lot of baited breath. I also like that someone is still adding the "In a circle" to the refrain at this point. I don't think that lasts much longer, or maybe it's just normally inaudible to the audience. Man, I've been workin' non-stop lately, I could not stay awake another second. Gotta start over from there, 'cause it appears things are about to really get off the hook.
RE: Three points of contact. Best to have two good buddies holdin' onta ya like you've got a couple broken legs. :P
Re: Streaming from The Archive. Good question. I don't have any facts for you, but I've got a truckload of speculation. It seems unlikely that the streams would be lossless. It takes, like 30 or 40 minutes just to download a 16bit 44.1Hz zip, but, now that I think of it, each track takes quite a while to cache. On my connection, it's usually impossible to scrub forward until I've heard the whole song at least once. The 24 bit 96Hz shows, though, they can't be streaming at that quality, but there is no noticeable difference loading for playback.
I used to go for those hi-res shows, but they take so damn long to DL, and I have to downsample'em to get'em on my ipod anyway... which is where I listen to most of my music these days since I've started commuting a couple hours a day. Just installed an Onkyo music player that plays FLAC and any bit/sample rate you can think of, though. Not sure what the DAC on my ancient phone is all about, though, but at least I don't have to go through the whole conversion and library addition thing. I'm obsessive, but not compulsive. If I'm gonna put the show in my iTunes library, I'm gonna hafta do all the data entry, too. On the other hand, if I've got a FLAC player in my pocket, then I'll just put "Today's drive to work and back" show in and not worry about it.
What a run
Been meaning to do a big wrap up of the last 2 huge April 71 Fillmore shows, but just haven’t had the time, and I’m sure enough has been said already, so I’ll just pile on the accolades. WOW, both shows are definitely prime Dead.
I think I’m with Doc in likening the 28th better than the 29, and after hearing every version since 3/24, also think the H2H from the 28th is the Bobbie Dazzler fo sho! But that’s just a dog sense kinda thing as both shows are stellar.
So glad I did the whole month in order as you can appreciate these last shows even more. How far they came on the new songs and how tight, relaxed, on top of things. Basically they started back at Port Chester with a whole new/old GD; balls out shoot em up bar band with a whole slew of new material that totally fit their new motif!
At first it could be manic, sloppy, etc, but by keeping it basic and literally pounding it out on the road (like over 20 shows in 25 days) by the end of the run in NY they had this new MO down!
By the end I don’t think they sound tired as much they just seem extremely comfortable, like anyone on top of their game. There in NY for a week with all the grueling travel behind them, they’ve paid their dues and got shit happening, just need to relax, enjoy, and roll some tape...
I’m sure some of the vibe was due to tape rolling. Tapes not cheap so you can tell their playing to the tape somewhat, but in a good way...and how sweet to throw in all those old chestnuts for the hip NY crowd.
I won’t say 71 has become a “favorite” year, but I’m gaining a much greater appreciation after spending this wonderful time getting better acquainted. Or reacquainted as S&R was on constant rotation during my formative years.
Definitely will be checking out more 71 than just the occasional spin from something later in the year.
4/22/83: that was a nice change up in the midst of all that 71, another solid off the beaten path show we can check off the list. Spring 83 can be a little inconsistent, but this show seemed pretty together and enjoyable.
Did 6/22/73 yesterday since I haven’t received 38 yet but wanted a little of the 73 magic. Still feel like a stranger with this box. Someday I’ll get the right time/space and binge out and get right with it. Still blows my mind that Box has not sold out? Maybe I’ll continue on with that today?
