It's difficult to recommend a particular album, or even era of this band. Every time the line-up changed, so did the music. The only consistent thing of the 69-75 version was that every line-up would perform Improvisations, and those could go anywhere. For the song oriented material, I guess I would recommend albums Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Red, and possibly Starless And Bible Black.
For the 80-2021 version(s), the improvs were still there, less so in the 80's-early 90's. Again many different line-ups after Belew/Bruford left. I really like Discipline and Thrak as starters for later era Crimson. But, ask 6 other people, you'll get 6 differing opinions.

King Crimson--help on the way?

So many many moons ago when it first came out, I purchased the box set "The Great Deceiver" by King Crimson, having heard NOTHING by them. For those who don't know, it's live material from 1973-74. I just could not get into it, despite having just become a Deadhead/Phishhead.

I've put it on here and there in the intervening 29 years, but just can't get excited about it.

Is this what one should listen to, to get into King Crimson? Is there something else I should be listening to? Should I make a point of seeing them live?

King Crimson

As far as I can remember I only got to see King Crimson live on two occasions, namely at Weeley Festival near Clacton in August 1971 and Bournemouth Winter Gardens in October 1971. Both occasions were notable for very different reasons. The Weeley Festival was where I got busted for the first time so my memories of that event are somewhat tainted by that unfortunate event. At the Winter Gardens me, my brother and his friend arrived in the afternoon, far too early for the evening show, but the band were already present so we passed the time having a football kick-about in the venue's car park with Mr. Fripp and other members of the band.

Red Rocks policy statement...

JimInMD, I didn't catch the Billy/Billie show at the Rocks last night, but instead hit my usual open mic night at a local bar, meeting up with women friends I haven't seen in more than a year. Mmmm... hugs and kisses.

Red Rocks poses a couple challenges: one is, are you ready to be in the middle of 10,000 partiers with the Delta variant raging through the younger demographic? Also, for bands that charge in the $75 range for gen'l admish, the resellers jack that up, ridiculously. I don't know if last night woulda been easier to get in, but Tedeschi Trucks' $75 gen'l admish tics for July 30 now run for north of $200. Lastly, I don't casually attend shows at the Rocks, never have. Mostly focus on one band, one or two nights, per year. Finally/lastly, blasphemy: I skip all the Dead offshoot bands, from Weir to Billy K to DSO. Hooked on the tapes as never before, just not spending on offshoots as I seek to retire. So it's money and crowd tolerance issues at my end.

As such, I'm clearly no longer the raving rave-ster of yore. Like when we ate Purple Dragon the afternoon of July 7, 1978 and looned about the Rocks, scaring young women and getting crazy long before showtime. I mean, that was only 43 years ago, but what a difference a nearly half-century makes in one's approach.

I'm not quite dead yet, but maintaining a slightly calmer public demeanor. Although we did yuk it up at the bar last night. All is well.

Jim, you didn't give her my address I hope. Yikes!!
Doc, I was interested to see Miles is your #2 in collection size. He's mine also, so MUCH breadth and depth, his music alone could take you through so many different styles and changes. While Bill Frisell would be my 3rd largest collection of one artist, King Crimson is definitely 4th.
Saw them first in 1980, two days in a row, DC/Baltimore. Holy moley how powerful!! I've seen them through the years since then, but probably only 6-8 more times. I am hoping to make this 'farewell' tour. Fripp is great, but can be a little arrogant at times(He once claimed that Jimi Hendrix didn't even know how to hold a guitar pick "correctly").
There's not much better in my world than sharing a love of music with like minded others, and for that, I am grateful to everyone here.

Believe it or not, I have a huge amount of KC recordings, coming in third behind Grateful Dead and Miles Davis. Regardless of era, the Crims have never been less than interesting and are often much more..........

My only gripe about Fripp (who is an ace guitar player) is that he has occasionally released suboptimal audience recordings, probably because sometimes those were the only recordings available............

Crimson King

I haven't heard much of Robert Fripps pre King Crimson recordings. It must have been a hell of a thing, though, to see them support The Stones at Hyde Park in 1969. Sympathy For The Devil was one thing-but this was of a different order entirely.

I didn't see them in the 1970s, although I caught them twice in recent years-and they are stunning live-three drummers at the front of the stage and a set list to die for.

These Crimson box sets are pretty impressive too. My favourite is "Starless". But for sheer value for money and wealth of improvised music the "Heaven and Earth" box set takes some beating. I have had it a few years, and I have no where near got my head round it all. Whole shows improvised from beginning to end, under the title of Projekct recordings. Many of these are on the blu ray discs included. Late 90s -2000 or so they were recorded.

The equivalent in Dead terms to these Prokekct recordings would be if the band had played whole shows which consisted of nothing but drums and space.

Heard a snippet of "I Know You Rider" going out of the top of the 7th.

If Joe Buck wasn't so enamored with the sound of his own voice, I might have been able to pinpoint the show, or at least the era. Sounded pretty hot.

Oh, now out of the bottom of the 7th, Althea. I'll have to go back and listen if they did this every inning!

FYI.. I just got a text from Dennis' wife asking what the fluck a $345 charge was doing on their card from Rhino for the new Jim Stafford limited edition box set.

The Fripp/Crimson stuff often amazes me. Big fan and saw them a bunch in my youth.. hope to catch this tour if possible.

The GD still amazes me also.

Decided to stream Billy and the Kids at Red Rocks tonight.. so glad I did. Amazing. Jerry might be dead but the Grateful Dead lives on and some the folks yielding their own custom axes.. are right up there with him. Tom Hamilton and Billy Strings are amazing.. add in Carlos Santana who sat in on Billy's 75's in Hawaii and.. perhaps I made my point.

This music is 'almost' as strong as ever and it's still growing and picking up new musicians, new fans and seemingly accelerating.

Hoping/wishing HendrixFreak is alive and well and freaking feely in the crowd.

Shoutout to AJS.. our favorite sports (and GD) enthusiast.

Anthem of the Giants

Kind of surprised to see all the hockey talk around here, when the REAL sports story right now is the amazing SF GIANTS, who despite being projected for yet another losing season, have the best record in the National League! Woohoo!

In the Bay Area, love for the Giants AND the Dead can be almost hereditary, and the Giants are well aware of the cross over. They have been hosting a Grateful Dead Night for decades, and also a Jerry Garcia tribute night, with appearances by band members, special seating sections, various swag. (I’ve got a cool t-shirt with an orange and black SYF on it.) Band members often sing the national anthem for those games.

If anybody ever did a ranking of various Star Spangled Banners by the Dead, like some people have done with Dark Stars and whatnot, I think this version would rank pretty high. Listen to the crowd response at the end!

GD National Anthem

Thanks Crow for reminding me of that absolutely patriotic moment! First heard it on the David Gans GD hour very near the date of its performance which was the Dead's first. In an attached interview on the GD Hour when asked why it took them so long to be asked to do it Bobby smarts off saying, " Because they knew it would take us a long time to learn it". Jerry takes the more thoughtful approach saying, "We are like bad architecture and old whores. After you've been around long enough you get some respect". Priceless! Vince really nails it and his harmonies get the applause especially on the high note. In another part of the interview Jerry is asked if he is a big Giants fan and again Bob jumps in with the dig, "Well he's not the smallest Giants fan." And again Jerry gives the more thoughtful reply, "Yeah, thanks (asshole). I guess we are like everybody; when they're doing well we start watching them. But I'm a San Francisco fan and they are our team."
How many National Anthems have they done?
P.S. It was not only the Dead's first time but it was opening day and the first female ballpark announcer in the history of baseball was also on her first day. Very historic indeed!

The Grateful Dead Movie

So the Grateful Dead Movie premiered today on June 1,1977. Anyone around here old enough to remember seeing it that summer. I went from Baltimore to DC to see it as the DC theater had an enhanced sound system especially for the movie. The opening animation was spectacular for its time (I actually still think it holds up quite well). The movie is a great tribute to the band and the audience (us deadheads). Captures the Dead concert experience quite well. If I didn't have every scene and line practically memorized I'd watch it again tonight in honor of the premiere. Oh, heck, why not one more time.

Thanks man. Just typical of this team. Like Jerry said about the Dead when it came to playing the “big” shows like Woodstock, they didn’t bring their A game. Must be the drinking water from Lake Ontario, has the same effect on the Buffalo Sabres, not to mention the “clutch kids”, the Bills.

I’m with you - anyone but Boston. Not to jinx, but the AVs are a pretty dynamic team, all down the lineup, so unless they do a Leaf, the Cup is theirs to lose. Vegas should come back swinging after the debacle the other night. But good luck to the AVs.

1st for those too you to remember, in the 70's Miller beer brought out a 7oz bottle of Miller called ...you guessed it ponies. If my memory isn't totally gone there were 36 in a case. The idea was they wouldn't get warm at the beach

Dave's Picks 38 9/8 Is Great

I got my drink on and finally had a shot to listen front to back without interruption. Zowie! I have never heard Bob Weir sound this good before. The audio is ok to me. I understand some people didn't care for it but I don't hear any issues other than the piano being too low. I should say steady issues. There are some spots where the audio drops but that is normal for these old recordings is what I have found.

As good as Bob Weir sounds, Jerry Garcia is playing some excellent stuff too. He always sounded good back then but there are some shows where he plays a little more frequently in a song. Me and My Uncle for example. He plays so many notes. Or Tennessee Jed. He plays an excellent guitar solo. Big River is as good as I have ever heard it. I would take a whole box set of these!

My German's pretty good.

I think what they are saying in the back and forth below is the box set announcement will come today at 4:00 PM EST. The 2021 box set will consist of the June 1973 RFK both the ABB and the Grateful Dead, every note and the Watkins Glen 1973, the complete recordings.

Not sure if it was mentioned but...JRAD is now playing 6 sets over 3 nights at the Lockn Farm August 11-13. Tickets go on sale Friday and are reasonable at199$ for such high quality musicians. Frosting on the cake is 2 nights of late night led by John Medeski and Bill Martin...hell yes. Hopefully, they sneak in Wood and make it all out MMW latenight freekfest. I will be attending especially now thats its so small, this will be a special one.

Lack of balance

It always seems to me to upset the balance of things a bit, announcing two Dave's Picks - and the bonus disc trick- at around the same time, in order to attract subscriptions. There then seems to be months and months with no decent announcements at all.

Now I’m losing my mind (what’s left of it), but I coulda swore that Dave said on one of this years videos, perhaps the last one, that there were going to be 3 more releases besides DaP.
Maybe it was for the S&R chat, so I don’t think that one counts, and no it’s not the AB bonus show, this was after all that...
I also seem to recall they used to do more releases for the holidaze, which would make sense from a marketing position. Remember a few years I had already used up my allotment with Santa, them all of a sudden these guys would drop something that I just had to have, which of course pissed Santa off cause now we’re over budget!

If I was in charge, we’d get 1 big (ger) box, 1 smaller i.e. RFK, 5 or 6 Dave’s a year, plus....?
Hell, if I were in charge I’d be spitting out as much of the vault as they can lol.

EDIT: it seems like maybe, finally, they rectified the shipping issues as I don’t recall seeing here too many problems this time, of course that’s DaP, ahem, not glassware etc...

I am really loving these Nassau shows. Wish we had all of 9.7. Greedy, I know. 73 really takes me there in general. That bouncing, joyful, tight vibe....pure beauty in my opinion. Cannot wait for Skull Fuck 50! Cheers! Peace and love, friends.

No - Strong Recommendation: While we await a box set announcement, for those that enjoy their jazz sans horns, the new Dave Holland “Another Land” is amazing! Great guitar by Kevin Eubanks (who used to be in one of the tv talk show house bands), and Holland is incredible, as always.

Anyone else notice how few, if any, delivery problems were reported here for DaP’s 38?

I suspect they’ve quietly addressed the issues that were widely discussed/shared for previous releases. Yes, wishful thinking is involved here.

Gives me confidence that a box set or two could be successfully announced/delivered this year.

My guess is that Rhino has been dealing with the same supplier/distribution issues that many companies are still facing.

Gotta believe Rhino is just as anxious to increase income as any other company during these strange times.

I think we’ll be hearing from Dave soon.
