Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

Now, I switched to Phil's 50th birthday show.

Interesting you should mention 11-6-77 DV. While listening to DiP 34 yesterday I had planned to go to the neighboring shows on DaP 12 & 25 soon.
That filler on DiP34 from 11-2 Seneca was jarring at first when it popped up with Might As Well since the sound is so different. So I played all that last to keep the continuity. Good stuff!
Oro, you dug out yet? Too many storms in a row for old bodies.

Love it Jim! I want it. My money is ready.

Yes, 1st show, totally agree 28-36 are great. Hard to believe at the time they didn't sell well so they decided to close up shop. Always makes me nervous when the Dave's don't sell out.

Listened to the whole release today and it is a good show with the Toronto filler. Always interesting to me how much more I like 11/6. Not that the other shows are bad they are not, just not as good as 11/6. Of course just my opinion. Too bad they didn't have any more shows after 11/6 until late December, they were smoking hot.

Hope you dig out of the snow out there in CO. Hard to believe I am playing golf in MN tomorrow afternoon.

I'm in. Snow day here but nothing like the front range. Got our biggie last week. I-70 closed and the Denver skiers asked the state patrol how can we get there from here and they simply said you can't. Always a better ski day after the storm anyway, lol.
    Cheers

Edit: Fired up the Minglewood opener loud. Jerry's tone and first solo tells me this is going to be a good one. "Some things you just know." Dick's 28-36 is just a hot run. I'm drawn to those frequently.

    Thanks man.

So, we are getting close to mid March and we haven't had a box set announcement. Looks like we will not have a Spring Box. They might be setting us up for a fall release to coinside with that fall 74 run. We will see.

In the meantime, cuing up 11/5/77, Dicks #34.

Pittsburgh 4/3 was the first time I had to call in “sick” from the hotel pay phone.
Trick was to find out how much the call cost (remember no cells so people still used pay phones, and have proper coinage before so call could go through and they’d not know it was LD , AND, no one was dumb enough to call from the room lol
“Hello, Louie, I’m afraid I’m not feeling so well…” while tripping freaks are laughing and yelling in the background lol. Yeah, I may be dumb but I’m not stupid ; )
And because I’d just started that new job and actually liked it, had to blow off the excellent Ann Arbor shows, had tix and a ride with BOO469 and everything, sigh…
4/8: went with a gal who was just a friend, but we probably should have been more, and not sure how after this show we weren’t lol. Between the song list and the X we probably were hugging the whole damn show lol
Yeah, wasn’t playing on tripping as I had to drive back that night (more on that later). But long short some guy came by in the lot and figured, hell we’ll just split a quarter 2.5 ways and be fine. I feel bad cause I kinda messed with the guy about if it was good etc. We’d just spent much of fall 88 going down that road a lot so felt pretty confident about our experience, but boy, oo-eee that was some good sheet. Id never before or since had X that strong, holy crap lol. And the poor gal with me had never done it!
So as you know, that comes on very fast comparatively, so we dropped right before going in and man before we were even out the lot shit hit us like a freight train. I remember she started getting the fear as we approached the one busy street we had to cross then up the steps and in, but she was having a hard time.
It was all gloomy and noises and I think steam coming outta the manholes lol, like instantly being plunged into a scary movie! But being a pro, I knew it’s get better after that first big rush and knew set and setting if we could just get inside all would be well with the world!
So after careful tender sharing of this key data, we finally got the nerve to go, once inside we were so high we just walked right in the back abd stayed there the whole night. Thank goodness the ushers didn’t kick us out lol.
But once inside, we immediately could feel the love and as I say, I think we swayed and hugged and danced the night away in a awesome blissful state.
Probably why I didn’t “know” this show better lol.
But the story doesn’t end there. Even after, another anomaly, we were still too damn high and there was no way I was going to make back to WNY from Cincinnati that way, so don’t recall who/how etc, but somehow we ended up across the river flopping in somebodies? hotel room on the floor with only just enough floor space for us to curl up and crackle a few hours before leaving.
Now the part all these years later that frosts my ass, is that we didn’t go to Louisville.
Not sure if she had to be back, but I had that relatively new job so I had to be back Monday after calling in previous week from Pittsburgh. But 4/9 was a Sunday, and back then my CC Cassady skills were epic, so if we’d have gone and not tripped etc, it would have been tough, but I’d done it before: (drive all night after a show and go to work next morning.)
Probably paranoid of crossing the mason-hippie line lol
But whatever, as it’s all so long ago, yeah, that’s one I wish I could redo.
Thank goodness for the archive though so we can relive all these wonderful shows, joyful ecstatic moments and some of the fear and danger too, now comfortably and safely from our homes! We are pretty fortunate in so many ways!

Come on it’s time to go

1/17 and 2/21 we’ve done, former good, latter excellent!

But amazingly I don’t think I’ve hit all of the January Avalon run, so that’s where I’ll start. Then 2/7 and 2/15, maybe I’ll rehit 2/11…anything else we haven’t done in March that’s worthy?
Would like to hit the Ark shows as I’m not sure I’ve heard all and think they should be done all at same time. I’d like to try to get up to RT 4.1 for this trip, then I’ll probably go back to 79 and/or 84? But I marked down 6/27&28 and 10/31/69 and will hit those later in the year when I need a 69 cleanse again lol

Ha, my only purpose in life now seems to be to battle poor health, and try to listen to every Dead show I reasonably can….well, at least I’m kicking ass at one of em ; )

DV: rut roah, seems there’s been some real bad flu this year.
    Hope y’all feel better soon!
And big kudos to the Edina boys on the big state championship!

I mostly went with the Ultramatrixs to keep things consistent.
I found them mostly good, but no idea of what’s available overall?
Yep, we were at the Pittsburg shows (DL 9).
The first is sorta anaemic, but the second night (3rd) was good.
Still wonder if another right city, street, but wrong house?
As good as the third is, I still think others might be as good or better, especially 4/5! Really, there’s no dog in the bunch and several could be considered a top pick depending on who’s picking ; ) Hopefully interested folks can find a show or two here to dig!

    Ok, January Avalon

Jim-I like the incantatory quality of Terrapin - the vehicle into the great unknown, I think you said. Its just that I like this vehicle to come right at the beginning of the show, so the whole show is presented as magical, rather than near the end, where it usually cropped up. I preferred the music to take over from the songs in the second set, and Terrapin seemed a bit too wordy, to me, for this to really happen.
But it a moot point - great song wherever it appeared.

In addition to some of the Terrapin shows listed (yes.. I think we should do them).

Any interest in 04/16/78, Huntington Civic Center WV or 5/25/77 The Mosque, Richmond VA (Dave's Picks 1)?

I haven't listened to them in a while and I like them both. This gives us something to work on for the rest of the week.. (as always other options welcome).

Sorry for being a bit preoccupied lately.. duty called.. but the work is all done for now. Time to relax a bit....

Thanks for keeping things moving in the interim.

Good call on that one, Jim. I'll tune in. From my recollection it has a 1st set closing Scar>Fire. An early-ish Iko, from when they were rarer. And I'll bet that drums/space jam is going to be out there, too.

Hopped in the truck getting ready to go boating and what are they playing on SiriusXM this afternoon?

4/16/78. Great recording, really good show from the Spring 78 tour. I was hankering for a good Peggy-O. I love Garcia Ballads, I bet I am not alone.

For kicks and giggles, check out The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie on wikipedia. The song is at least as old as the 1600's.. but I swear I read references going back much further. Have to visit Scotland sometime.

Cheers all.. One more Friday night!

Credit to Oro on the DaP38 page, today is the anniversary of ‘Downhill From Here’.
I’m going to watch it tonight.

Thanks,
Great show!

SWING, not sure what it is, but perhaps my fav 77?
Did 6/8/74, meh, awesome second set sequence, but overall just ok for 74 anyway.
Hoping to finally hit 5/25/74 this WE!

Oh, long story short, servers drives dead again...it’s maker is frustrated as supposedly he gets more and more new drives that are fucked outta the box etc. so He’s becoming unsure which drives to use, forget what he ended up going with?

First operating drive was spinning disc, spent after about 2 years, so “we’ll replace with SSD as there more reliable”
Well that died too, now “SSDs are shit etc, we’re using spinners now”....Replaced OS drive, but now thinks Music drive is dead too?
This is why I fucking hate computers and thus never learned about them. There is no consistency or reliability at all, no one seems to know what their doing, they just seem to guess, by parts, and hope, and if not, repeat with different parts etc, etc... worse, it’s 6-7 hours round trip (in summer) and because it’s a custom boutique instrument, shipping’s out...

But what’s a freak to do, this running up stairs every 45 to 80 minutes and then having to stand in front of a wall of music and have to CHOOSE! is for the birds. @#&*+% technology, like women, can’t live with em, can’t live without...
anyway, my question is what kind of drives y’all using, or what kind would you recommend, and what kind would you denounce? I mean both which format, and what brands etc?
Can’t believe drives dying every year or so is status quo, then again...

I have Western Digital HD’s for storage and backup. Multiple backups, various size HD’s.

In fact, tonight I’m going to assemble a Thunderbolt 3 RAID mirror system using 4 x 10TB WD Gold HD’s.

Also have three Thunderbolt 2 RAID mirror setups: 2 x 6TB WD Black HD’s (two of them, one has GD in AIFF format, the other non-GD AIFF, and all bands in ALAC format), and 2 x 12TB WD Gold to backup all files (AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, AAC-320).

You can never have too many backups.

If you use your HD to actually play and listen to the files then you should expect the HD to die every few years due to heavy use. Regular consumer HD’s are designed for moderate use. Heavy use requires gaming/video editing HD’s (WD Black) or enterprise (WD Gold).
Seagate also makes enterprise and gaming HD’s along with lower performance consumer HD’s.

WD Blue is a moderate use consumer drive and is probably what is inside the black plastic case of the WD MyBook drives at Best Buy, Amazon, etc.
I have a lot of those black plastic consumer drives that I use for audio and video storage and processing, but have made the higher end RAID systems for redundant backups.

I play music on music players that use micro SDXC cards and plug the player into my stereo.

The HD’s are just for storage and backup, and they are unplugged when not in use.

I passed that on....though I think he’s mentioned much of that....I’m just getting bad at retaining...
Luckily I do have a backup drive, but thinking I might get another....
The server is custom made for high end audio, it’s the only thing I use the machine for, no internet etc...so it is the unit I stream from. So I guess replacing these regularly is an unfortunate necessity of life : (
The price we pay to attempt to “get it just exactly perfect”

EDIT: I guess he’s going with Western Digital BLACK 0.5TB for Windows 10 drive., and Storage drive is an Enterprise 4TB NAS-specific hard drive from Seagate called the "Ironwolf".
We’ll see how long we get this go round...
Thanks Again!

Man those 74 Truckins are powerful! All this show neede was a DS, or phat PITB...or a 74 Eyes, that’s what it’s missing!

Good ole Downhill from Here last night. Been hitting all the summer 89 vids lately.
I’d put 89 on my Memorial Mountain!

Hoping to hit that 4/16/78 today. Ever since DaP 37, I think spring 78 is my new niche place?

EDIT: 4/16/78, nice little show, sure sounds good! Not on the same level as it’s neighbors, but enjoyable non the less.

Who has a pick for today?

The Downhill from Here DVD video is fantastic. So much energy in those shows. Might be best of the July 89 run.

Should be a big week with the Dave's Picks #39 announcement coming through Email. Some people should start receiving shipping notifications at some point this week. Seaside chat on July 30.

We are on a roll.. why not continue and finish with 7/19/89. It get's less love than 7/17 but it's a classic nonetheless.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.. right? I say we keep going.

I was already planning on watching the video.
Almost watched it last night but decided to hold off until today.
Had set 2 on VHS in the late 90’s. If you haven’t seen the video before Cutler applied the “Cutler Video Protection System” where he overdubs himself talking in a few places because, as he says, “ I can’t have videos going out there with good mixes on them”.

I’ve got the complete show on DVD-R now.
It’s also on Utooob I believe.

Hopefully I’ll soon be able to watch all 3 nights on BluRay……
Yeah Dave, that’s a hint/request.

I didn't know it at that time, but this was my last show. And it was spectacular! The mix I listened to isn't perfect, but it is still really good. And I do remember most of this show. I remember at the time, I told myself to take it easy for the last night of this tour. Nice Sugaree, loved the Desolation Row, which sounds much better on DHFH, Deal is a rocker. Chills still for several songs in the second set, Box of Rain, LLR and that Terrapin. Great Morning Dew and the Lovelight encore. Great trip down memory lane.

We would all benefit from cleaned up released versions of the 89 Alpine run. Let's get it out.

Hey POTD crew!!
We've got a Box Set Announcement!
Pretty stoked. I sure do like some 71, 72 & 73 :)
Who called it?

Hope all are doing well.
I haven't been on Dead.net for a bit, got sucked into a big huge music collecting wormhole and something had to give.
It's been really fruitful so I figured you all wouldn't hold it against me.
Totally out of the loop, but glad to see you all are still Truckin'!

Hot Dog Good Stuff!

and throw in some Kiel for good measure

mind blown, grand slam, another dream realized!!

Jim - you were on it and I was like - love it, hope you're right, and no, really, no way its happening.

and its amazingly even bigger and better

ha - wrong again!!

GOGD!! Glad you're okay out there. Was wondering. Music collecting wormhole?? Tell us more. Really.

If anybody's looking for a pick after 10/26/80, may i suggest DaP 18 from Orpheum July 76. Got that sweet, delicate and carefully crafted, 1976 groove. Disc 2 craziness - Comes A Time > Drums > Other One > Space > Eyes of the World > Jam > Other One > Going Down The Road Feeling Bad > One More Saturday Night. The second encore Not Fade Away.

Stay safe out there everyone.

it would burn off both of your little ears BlueCrow!

Did Jimbo call the box?
I haven't read through the months of action that have gone on since I checked out, so whoever wants to give me a synopsis of what I missed that'd be great ;)
But yeah I actually went on a collecting spree the likes of which I hadn't quite experienced before (and I was already hardcore).
Completed my GD lossless collection and then moved into some outer realms of collecting madness, which was dominated by a Huge bender with The Replacements and The Beatles.

I had to give TGOGD a rest for awhile after over a year of super intense listening.

A nice pallet cleanse as OB/Jim would say.

But you all were in my heart and mind and I'm glad to see you're all carrying on.
I'll try and keep better tabs, but this collecting music thing takes up all my time!

XOXO
TGOGD

I've been calling for both a Fox Box (72) and BCT Box (72) since give or take since Ventura came out. ..but when that pre-release Amazon tell came to light.. I did post I hope it's a Fox Box.

I think a few years ago I scripted a Dr. Seuss like chant calling for a Fox Box. I don't think I deserve any credit though.. lots of people love both this venue and the shows performed there including Garcia himself who raved about the Fox and the Capitol Theatres in an interview long, long ago. Just dreaming.. the place is legendary and we all knew the tapes existed.

It's a good day on dead.net, I'll take the win.

Good to see you, GOGD.. we have all done a terrible job trying to fill in.. big shoes to fill.. special shoutout to dvikes, the steady heartbeat that helped keep this all together. Sort of like the glue that kept this house of cards together recently.

What a Box! Wouldn't it be great to be Dave L. To have access to all that unbelievable music! We are so lucky. Super excited to have another box set to look forward to in October.. ...

Great to hear from you GOGD and Bluecrow.
Jim, appreciate you and all you have done for this thread and this site, such a positive influence for all of us.

So when you have time, check out 10/26/80, because these 1980 shows will never be released in a box set. Anyway, recording is A+.
So funny Bluecrow, I had Dave's #18 going in the car the other night. Yes, disc 2 is so mellow, I want to kick it back and fill in the blanks.

So in celebration of the Fox Box.. perhaps tomorrow we should pull a show from the other infamous Fox Theatre (the one in Atlanta).

That shouldn't be too hard.. anyone have a date they want to hit from the other Fox?

How does 4/11/78 sound?
I thought Dave would release this one at some point, but since he just released #37, I am not so sure it will be anytime soon.

I am cool with 78. We should consider 77 and 90 at some pint in the future too. Fun times to enjoy GD music. I am really psyched for this box. The Fox Box. Low hanging fruit to be sure, but man these are some really good shows. Might as well let the fun ouzo into this thread.

Thanks to all of you for keeping it fun.

Great Pick!
Not familiar enough with this tour to pick a “best” but this bad boy outshines the bits of 4/18 I’ve heard, and 4/16, but still think I’m partial to 4/15, perhaps just because of that one caught me by surprise and knocked me off my feet?
This tour (April 78) is definitely my new favorite hardly explored niche.
And man, what a amazing sounding show! Not too much of that low mid bass/drums that sometimes plagues Mickey Godchaux Band occasionally (imho). Nit pick would be it gets a little thin near the end as they get LOUD...but that’s actually probably “accurate” for that era.
Kudos again to Miss Betty! Wow!

Did the first of the 6/86 Greek as it got the PF seal of goodness. Another great surprise, gonna have to finish that run off...

Murphy’s damn law, every time!
I’ve been getting all kinds of (new to me, or replacing copies with actual) music and several shows cued up on Relisten, but no damn time! Uuugghhh, this always happens lol. I know, good problem to have.

Oh, and currently spinning this Dave McMurray disc that just arrived...SWEET!

Hopefully new Dave’s next week, and RT 2.2 that I’ve been waiting on big time since I passed it up back when, idiot!
So can’t wait for that one to drop as I’ve never heard it!
Onward!

Oh, PS, a big how do to Bluecrow, KCJ, Exile, and many others on the Box thread, and of course our spiritual Scout Master, GOGD! Awesome how many “ir-regulars” have popped up recently...glad to see ya all!
Hope everyone stays safe/well as things are getting Stranger again...

Not too bad either with that Shakedown out of an Ollin Arageed Space. Some funny banter during the show about a moat or alligator pit too somewhere in the first set. There's a radio interview Weir does adjacent to this show that's up on the archive. I'd say at least it's a worthwhile juxtaposition with 4-11. Jacksonville 4-8 is interesting, too with that butter Betty sound. Some of my best tapes BITD.

She was definitely part of the paid Grateful Dead staff. Had different jobs or responsibilities through out the years and after Rex died. I think it ended after an issue with Brent in the early eighties.

However I think it is true that she was not paid for recordings she made with her own equipment. I believe the ABCD LLC transaction kicked some money her way, however, I have no idea how much.

Still planning on getting to 12/17.

There is a cut at the end of the tape rendering Sugar Magnolia and the encore Johnny B Goode in AUD sound. This show is a nice example of the post-Egypt '78 sound. Overshadowed I suppose by the slightly more appreciated 12-16 and 12-19 (both also available only in AUD sound if memory serves). I like 12-12, too. We already listened to that here. Nice board of that. Wasn't Garcia jamming on the Bean in some of these December shows? At least the Nashville show I think. I gotta tune into 12-28 Golden Hall again sometime soon. Nice board of that around (and around) too.

An aud patch? Outlandish, I'm out.

(kidding of course).

Nice little underrated gem and my first listen. I enjoy how delicate Jerry's voice is in this era, in fact all of '78 after his January laryngitis. Nice opening and Peggy-O plus a strong MNS show closer in the first set. I guess the wild card is the post space Shakedown, what's not to love there.. it almost seems like they are going into Morning Dew right before the Ollin Arageed jam. An interesting show.. patch and all.

I like this Fox themed diversion.. good way to show support for the new box set.

Thanks for Fox Pick. Version I listened to was a little rough, but that is the deal sometimes. 78 was such an interesting year for the band. A lot of changes...

Looking forward to a 1980 pick being announced this week.

His pick of the day a little over two weeks ago is the next Dave's Picks... Spectrum, 4/26/83. I thought it was super hot.

That show was hot, and I believe it was a good Healy mix?
Totally just stumbled on it trying to check off that tour.
Sometimes you get shown the light.....oh, and Dave’s first Shakedown!
It will be interesting to see what this one sounds like...

Sorry no time yet for the 12/17.....but it’s on “the list”

Did do 6/21/86 recently, following PFs recommendation of the run.
Was distracted, liked it, but probably first night better?
I think the third night is what PF suggested?...

FOX ON THE RUN, man, I’m thinking that 4/10/78 looks interesting, on paper anyway?
Might have to hit that soonish...
But RT 2.2 has arrived, wooohoooo, so hopefully that’ll be my Wednesday night batch night as the Mrs works late.
...and hopefully Dave’s for next weekend! So much Dead, so little time!

So 4/10/78 Oroborous?

Let's give it a go.

Congratulations on another Philly show.

I guess Dave plans on living until 150.

No shipping notice here.

Everybody hang loose.

Think I’m going to try and sneak that 12/17 in here at work, and save 4/10 for the big system as these spring 78 Beatty’s have been blowing my mind...if I get out early maybe I’ll try tonight?
But ASAP fo sure as I’m itching to hear it and have a wave of new stuff to get too. I know what I’m doing this WE (hopefully)...

It's amazing to me what a difference a good recording makes. Especially when you are into it and turn it up to 11.

I am not an era hound, bound to certain years or band configurations.. but my comfy shoes seem to groove better to 68 through 74.. I can call it home to any show from any era. But good recordings do make a difference, which makes this head think the 80's and beyond would fare better through the eyes of history if Betty (or Kid or whoever [RIP Rex and Bear]) had been behind the controls, loaded up the Ampex and hit the red button.

There were some fine shows along the way that fell in the wayside simply because the recordings were not AAA+.

Great to see this thread move beyond barriers, I have learned a lot. (and to my dismay or great pleasure, worked a little less as a result).

Jim, you are not a Healy fan?
I think the move to cassettes also hurt the process. The reel to reel recordings in most cases really held up over time.

Because it looks like Dave is in no hurry to release shows from 1980, I thought I would recommend another show from 1980, 10/2/1980?

Hope you all receive your copies of #39 soon, I am looking forward to receiving mine as well, but it looks like it is not happening this week.

Edit: I am a huge fan of Pearson and John Cutler. Cutler did a great job in the late 80s and early 90s.

Nothing personal.. but no, I am not a big fan of the ultra-matrix. I like my soundboards crisp.

To be fair, there may be reasons beyond Dan's control that influenced how the cassette master era came to be. I still enjoy them but wonder what could have been....

Certainly no hard feelings, bygones...
