not potdwd but thought I'd share some outer world stuff. last week had to journey back to the Midwest for a family "event" - first time traveling like that since the beginning of the plague times. a solemn event at the center but good to see us together and to see family friends again in some cases after many years. and by complete coincidence Dead and Co. was at Wrigley during that time. wasn't originally planning on going but in the end that would have been a true mark of losing my "alleged" mind and with great urging from my brothers, the younger brother scored some tickets. vax card or neg. test for entry. so glad we made it. not quite as carefree as the old days but boy oh boy did i need some of what they were dishing up. first night was a weather night - lots of rain and lightning delaying the show and cutting the 1st set short. second night was picture perfect early fall evening. lots of great tunes both nights - gotta run to work so won't get into a detailed breakdown now - you can find the set lists on line. Scarlet > Deal> Fire and Dew 1st night with Ripple encore. better seats night 2 - Set II was freaking awesome end to end. China > Rider, Estimated > Eyes, Milestones out of space, into Days Between > Help > Slip > Frank. I get choked up just thinking about it.
Drove both there and back, old school, didn't sleep in a cave in the hills but did crash out for a couple hours at the museum in Eagle at 3am on my way back.

I'm a convert to the after dead bands. I think I've written about this before here.. but after ignoring it for more than a decade.. I saw Phil by coincidence on Halloween in 2007 and kicked myself in the ass for being such an arrogant snob about my dead life. First, it was a good show, second.. I had so much fun. I was working in NYC and got off the subway to a complete circus in full swing, scored a ticket at cost still wearing my work garb, PC over my shoulder and the rest unfolded rather nicely. What a blast.. I get that people don't like or won't like D&C, but I think they are good.. listen to Oteil sing Comes a Time / China Doll or Chimenti throw out these incredible fills in Eyes of the World.. and yes, Help/Slip!/Franks is awesome. As much crap as people give Mayer, he is talented and capable. My favorite meme sent to me this week by someone here actually.. was of Chumlee wearing a steelie knit hat telling the Pawn Shop owner guy he wants to see Garcia on Acid.. and the reply.. the best I get you for that is Mayer and Advil.

So I finished 4/1/91 this morning, a great little show.. I love Bruce in these years, but I think they kept Vince in a box. I would have liked to see him play piano more and synth less. As we rode down to Fenario....

Anyway... I will start 10/31 later today and I have marked my Calendar on 9/24/2022 to start all those great shows Oroborous picked out. Really looking forward to them. :D

VGUY: bet 10/27 was a powerful show to be at! Looks like ole Strider was there too.

I enjoyed this show, good energy, it’s yet another solid, well played 91. Only miss I recall was in Cassidy...great guests with extracurricular highlights take it up a notch. Must of been fun to be at!

Hit this first thing today.
Good solid show, perhaps not the barn burners of May 81, but good show. First perhaps a tad laid back, perhaps keeping things tight and right for the first return to the continent in seven years?
Nice rainbow mix of songs to present to the crowd, many perhaps seeing the band for the first time?

Second set picks it up with some good energy. Slight transitional hiccup from S-F, but overall a well played show.
By Truckin’ their starting to feel their oats and bring it all home with a classic R&R ending!

Okay, forgot what else I tried to post?...on to Dicks 17 9/26/91 as I need some higher fidelity R&R for FAC!
Relative new comer to my collection, but I recall being pleasantly surprised when I first heard, so looking forward.

Yep Oro - I was in the neighborhood! Needed a 2 hour mind and body recharge and hoping I wouldn't get rousted. Saw a few snowflakes at Loveland and Vail. The live fix was a big deal after the last couple years. brother(s) - "as your attorney I recommend you see a show." more below.

Jim - The Weirwolf - yeah I think its pretty f*ckin funny. I didn't see any Shakedown near Wrigley. Remarkably little vending. after that magnificent second night curving back around front of the stadium on way "home" and there's a lone(ly) Head holding up a sticker that reads - God Bless the Weirwolf. I think "that's pretty good!" and also notice that no one really seems to see him. It was odd - he's holding these stickers just above his forehead, silent, and its like he's invisible as the crowd flows around him. I wasn't really in acquisition mode and got about a hundred ft past before I turned to my brother and said I gotta go back and get that (1 for $3, 2 for $5 - picked up 2). The seller sincere - "Thanks Brother" as Bobby the Weirwolf was blessed and reaffirmed. A small momento of those nights which I'll remember forever. Bobby looks wild nowadays. His singing on Days Between was like a possessed Spirit. Archetypal. A freaking Weirwolf for sure howling out visions and prophecies.

Rain first night was one of those added dimensions that doesn't phase me nowadays. Of course tickets were covered, high in the Upper Deck just past 3rd base so we weren't getting cleared off the field (not once but twice.) But yes, I can dig some weather. By end of delayed and abbreviated first set we were hanging in upper aisle with room to dance and just checking out the parade of China Cats - so cool to see all these happy people. D&Co with Weirwolf singing opened second set with a very slow groove, funky Dancing in the Streets, nothing like any version I've heard elsewhere. Really really dug it. "Dancing in Chicago" Segued into a nice always welcome Playing, then Scarlet. Mickey on the BEAM was awesome - the whole stadium in rumble-vibrate cobalt-light phase. I love that shit. Special shout out to NY Tim and crew from that 1st night. God it was fun.

althea > uncle john's > he's gone to open second night. really? yes! and that second set night 2 had a fine fine groove all through. sweet sweet sound and all jammed out. Milestones was crazy - i was dancing so hard to that. It seemed like something was afoot between Chimenti and Mayer during space before they got to THAT. and the H>S>F to close was out of this world - all of it - wild how "Roll Away . . . " carried through the stadium.

So yeah Oro - getting to experience all of that live was very cool and very necessary .

I saw a few post-Jerry shows from '96 - '05, all in the Front Range, a fair number at Red Rocks that most awesome of venues. Totally forgot until this evening that the first was a Merle Saunders show in a tiny club in Colorado Springs. Awesome time - my first Dark Star! But it was a Further event at Fiddler's Green in '97(?), including sets by Mystery Box and Rusted Root, that really brought me around to the fact that Jerry was and is still with us. With all those shows it wasn't simply "nostalgia" - there was always new music being played. The first P&F show at Red Rocks July 2001 (7/6) "floored" me (check out the set list for that show and second night). When they dropped into Blues for Allah I looked at my friend with one of those wide-eyed big smile yhgtbfkm looks of pure joy. dream and myth. Really dug what Warren Haynes brought always. And Jimmy Herring. John Molo. Ryan Adams in the guest slot with Phil 2002(?). Mayer and Oteil and Chimenti. Every one of the music makers.

So yeah - my thought is someday maybe "we" can all enjoy a few beers together. Even a show or 2.

Which reminds me - where in the heck is GOGD?

I think i remember reading one of those random reviews in Deadbase. managed to miss the Uptown run a few days later but caught Alpine right after that. Second set 1st night at Uptown is insanely good.

September 91 just keeps on giving.

For those who do torrents I noticed (and then acquired) that several remastered September 91’s had been posted recently.
I haven’t checked them out yet to see what improvements had been made, but I did notice a few days ago that my copy of 9/22 has a several second long gap of silence between Drums and Space. I was going to edit that out but maybe I won’t have to if a remastered version is available.

3/21/81✔️ More of the same, in a good way, just nothing extraordinary, that stands out during these shows so far?
9/26/91✔️ This one goes both ways...it has some of the consistency of the tour, but this night, has somewhat out of the ordinary stand outs. Big shhhhooooeee, (think Ed Sullivan) on paper at least.
I feel the same about some of these versions, as perhaps other post re-entry versions: there not the best performances of the songs you’ve ever heard, but so what, overall, there enjoyable, invoke the spirit of the music, have good jams, space, etc, and when tied all together in a nice container like this show, said container should be pasteurized and served cold to a thirsty public!
Not unlike other official releases, this wouldn’t perhaps be the most polished show from the neighborhood, but to me, the bigness makes up for it. What can I say, I’m a Dark Star junkie and sucker for any attempt to tapback into the timeless reflection of matter...and hey, it’s got a Cumberland!

Had a chance to listen to the 3/20/81 London show. Wish there was a better sounding recording available. I seem to remember Blair Jackson talking about how great these shows were and what a bummer it was that there was not better recordings available.

glancing at set list night before that and there's something I've never seen - a Sugar Mag / Sunshine Daydream sandwich post drums. '80 and '81 are filled with great shows and it would have helped if Betty had been at the helm recording a whole bunch of them on reels (cue picky deadhead comment).

DeadVikes - trust me the Midwest is still the land of my childhood heart. I know you're back there but was thinking you were somewhere a bit north of Chi-Town?

Oro - a great pick made even better that you were there. A sweet listen end to end. It was that very rare Sunday morning when I'm up in the work space and it was a perfect show to stream. Must say, like about every drummers birthday riff, Bob is totally making it up as to Chuck Berry's birthday. I'd love to ask him about that made-up birthday thing he's got - he was trotting it out all the freaking time.

Gotta hope that the first set is in the vault in well-recorded entirety . Great songs, excellent and spirited playing. full throttle Shakedown > CC Rider to start. Oh my goodness. V Guy has his Cumberland thing. My "thing" is a slightly more expansive. Not just Cumberland, but Brown-Eyed Women, Peggy-O, and Jack-a-Roe(!!). Big Railroad. Me and Bobby McGee. This show has both Brown-Eyed and Jack-a-Roe, plus (added bonus) On the Road Again. Before 8/7/82 my youngest brother (#1 son counting backwards) said he wanted to hear On the Road Again. I said no way they're playing that. You bet, they played it.

That pre-drumz second set has got to be unique. The transitions from Bertha > Estimated and Estimated > Going Down The Road are pretty B/W, as is GDTR > drums, all very cool in the energy shift. Love the tone on circa '81 Not Fades (just wish they'd jammed it out a bit more.) Bobby has a tiny misstep trying to bring back the NFA chorus. But Jerry is all focused on Morning Dew, not that it's immediately evident, but no big deal Bob.

Given an earlier comment I made, the portion of the show available from Healy's cassette master sounds pretty damn good.

Ha.. serendipitous. They played the post space part of 9/25 on TIGD History yesterday on SiriusXM. Dave got into quite the tangent on the venue, hockey and the guy called The Earl of Bud that got rowdy at hockey games and danced to the Tequila song whenever they had faceoffs...

I was up early and gone all day driving into some of the more remote areas in Southern WV for some river fun.. what a beautiful state, had a blast.. so I had a lot of time in the truck to listen to music and out the door at 7am brought me to the later half of the second set. ..but it only had the Playing Reprise.

I was in the truck 12 hours later and got a relisten, so I hit the full second set when I got back. Sweet second set, plus there's a pretty good Miller update that came out somewhat recently. Double Sweet.

I guess I will have to hit the first set today. Great pick guys.. nice early show Oro (I think that came somewhat early in your show seeing days??).

Took a crack at this show yesterday. What a show to be at Oroborous. The first set recording that is available needs some work, but yes I agree the second set Healy that is available sounds much better. You would have to think he has quite a few recordings of his own that will continue to drip out.

I sorta remember something about BJ and the Europe 81 tapes, but was it the spring, or the longer and more well known fall Europe tour? Hmmm, have to research that one since slacker GOGD isn’t here to do it for us LOL.

This was my sixth show, (over span of almost 3 years, later I’d routinely tag that many in one tour lol)
It was perhaps the only time I attended a show that was part of a social gathering (I can even remember most of the bars we went to after), and the first time not in prime seating location.
Though we had decent seats: right side, up and back probably half way: I’d been fortunate to see 2 Front row, 2 third row, and ? probably 10-15 rows back on the floor for 11/9/79, so this was a big difference and sorta distraction, not that I would be able to understand that then. I just knew it sucked not being close up!
Yep, Jim, Klondike Keek, and I, better know then collectively as the Booze Brothers, with Milton Wikelberry Steamer III, Tammy M, aka Buzz Kitten, and a couple of the Gates brothers that hung with Milty...perhaps more?
So I remember On the Road Again (my only one) as Reckoning was new and in heavy rotation, and I know I loved it, but back then our knowledge of all things Dead wasn’t like now with Net and deadbase etc. so it was just sorta another Dead show. Over the years I had kinda forgot about it, and when I finally did hear it back a couple years, it was only a superficial treatment. I think late at night at a party on a shitty smart speaker?
But my cousin kept telling me how Dave and Blitz kept playing it or parts here and there and seemed hot on it, so I’ve been wanting to catch up with it, and have been planing on it for a while. So of course the day comes, and I was hoping to get a nice mellow Sunday morning listen with some coffee, and when the weed is just right and hasn’t taken over the conversation for the day yet,...but, well, shit happens lol.
So long story short it’s gettin on late afternoon, so ended up watching football before, which long story, was a bad tactical error lol, so when I did hear it I was sorta wrecked, definitely burnt after afternoon beer buzz etc, so needless to say THAT run through wasn’t productive lol.
But got up today and have been quite digging on it this beautiful AM!
So come on Dave, bring it! Ha!

Earl of Bud, Earl Patterson Howze Jr, was a fan favorite and staple at many Buffalo events for decades. He was a Beerman but wore this white tux and did the pee-wee big shoe dance during breaks in the game etc. he became quite a local celebrity over the years...id lynx if I could, ahem...
So if 9/25/91 was in Boston, which is a rink with a despicable lol, but pretty good hockey team ; ) but Earl was in Bu fa falo, I’m confused? Perhaps Dave was discussing 9/26/81, again...?, which gives me hope! Lol, see, it’s always about getting shows released!

Dave was hyping up 9/26/81 for TIGDH. He was speaking generally about the venue.. that he had never seen the Dead there but had seen several hockey games at the same arena. ..and the Earl of Bud dancing. Does that make more sense?

Got my only On the Road Again at my first show a few months later in Baltimore.

Yeah, 81 was the last time they played there, never played the “the MA”, (until post JG) the venue that replaced the old Aud
The Aud was one of those old war memorials that were everywhere, and especially up and down I 90, a big nasty drafty old place. Think they only played at the Aud 5 times? Twice in 73, and once in 77, 79, and 81? Hell, they didn’t play Buffalo much until Rich stadium...Starting in 86, they did five shows at “the Ralf” as known to locals, aka Rich Stadium. But I think only like 12 times total, if you count the legendary 3/17/70 philharmonic show! I’d give up my front seat in hell for a Beatty of that one!
Earl of Bud was always a smile! Bet Angry Jack knows of Earl from both the Aud and the MA.
I’ll take it as a sign since this show keeps popping up on “official” channels!

yesterday Hundred Year Hall was released. What a great recording, the art work for this release was and is out of sight and the liner notes by Hunter are just exactly perfect. So I am recommending it even though it is not a complete show, it still sounds mighty good. Of course you can hear the entire show if you bought the steamer trunk.

I believe we hit up the full show not too long ago, but great shows always need to be listened to again.

I first heard it in a car going to see Phish 10-27?-95 at Wings Stadium in Kzoo (also went the next night at The Palace and had a floor seat next to the SBD).

HYH sounded so much better than my tape collection at the time.
But I didn’t buy it at first because it wasn’t a complete show. When I did buy it I rearranged the chop job to at least be in the correct order and burned CD-R’s. I still have my copy of HYH.

So, the STL Box is now delayed a week. Hopefully it doesn’t get delayed again, and hope that DaP40 doesn’t get delayed.

Just finished Space from 7-14-85 and it was mighty fine.
I like Drums/Space and 84 and 85 have some good ones.
And the 90’s versions can be as psychedelic as anything that came out in the 60’s.
Good fun!

Reminds me of a non GD peaking experience decades ago.. in the basement still in high school, my brother called us all up to the house, we had a much safer place to be just down the street.. but unwisely headed up anyway. He pretty quickly figured out we were all tripping.. he wasn't but had an alcohol buzz and wanted us to share some greenery, which we did.. so he puts on Electric Ladyland, when side 4 came on he really cranked it up.. the folks were upstairs and it just got way to heavy. I kept thinking what if they came down the steps, oh the horror... I had to leave the house for about a half hour and look at the stars. Everything was breathing and distorting, like living in a Salvador Dali painting. I had this feeling all night like I was 3 feet tall.. Make it stop.. ha, yes, that was it. Still raining still dreaming....

Speaking of space.. my brother went on to greater things and spend his life putting things into space.. he's retired now, but ended up becoming a rocket scientist, perhaps it all had the desired effect on him. I thought I'd add that as it kind of rounds out the story nicely...

Maybe tomorrow we could hit something with a Watchtower in it..

For what it's worth, I caught the first Watchtower at the 87 Greeks. On the second chord I turned to my gf and whispered, "watchtower." No fantastic guesswork, they were pulling out new Dylan shows left and right that year and the year before. It was just a matter of time...

It has been some time since I have chimed in here, but I do check in regularly and still play along as often as I can. I would post more often, but for some reason, the website usually logs me out when I click on any of the comment pages. Not sure why, or why it didn't do it this time, but oh well.

While I am here, may I make a recommendation? This past weekend, I listened to 9/26/81 Buffalo and it blew the doors off! Whew! If anyone is interested, I would listen to it again. There is a really nice Matrix on the Archive - The "Shakedown" opener is all AUD, but it settles in nicely after that.

If you are interested, I would recommend going in blind - the second set is red-hot and pretty unique!

I felt that 10-31-91 should have been in 30 Trips, and that 9-10-91 should have been an unlimited general release so that people who don’t collect the limited releases could have a companion to 3-29-90 and get 2 shows with Branford.

Which will be the next 1974 show to be released? Interesting question to ponder. There are a handful that come to mind for me.

I can't believe how many 74's have been released and how few we have left. I did a quick count.. of the 40 shows performed that year, 28 have either been released or partially released (I did this really quickly, I missed be off by a show or two). This means only 12 are not already in the ether? And a few of these are not ready for prime time.

Still.. a few gems to see the light, love your list Wilfred.

ca. 1997 i had recently relocated in the desert southwest, off the beaten path. one other deadhead that I knew of in that tiny town. one night he mentioned a river running buddy of his from Flag had dropped off a list of shows he had to trade would I be interested? On that list was an audience of 7-25-74, International Amphitheatre, graded a C+. It was a '74, i grew up near Chi-Town, of course I asked for that. One night a few weeks later the friend of a friend stops in town briefly and he and I got to talk outside under the desert night sky for a few minutes before he continued down the road.

he had, in fact, taped the show (from the balcony?) - yes it was "his" tape, and i think the only show he ever taped. he was proud of it, myth time, stars in his eyes thinking about that show. i can't remember most anything he told me except that he was seriously d*sed (by someone close to the band?) and the ship of fools encore was absolutely righteous.

listening to it I'd say a C+ grade was generous (of course it was his baby.) but you could hear the music and get into the headspace. I dubbed a copy and sent it to a friend back in Chicago (his day job was at Dr. Wax.) a few weeks later I got an excited letter from him. he had reached out to some folks in one of the elite tape trading forums and found out that there were no tapes of this show known to be in circulation. none. zip. zero. a big goose egg. and so not only a non-circulating '74 but also a non-circulating '74 Dark Star (or DS jam for some) and in that there was a Slipknot tease. so this obscure tape caused something of a stir. the folks who were putting together the first volume of the Deadheads Taping Compendium wanted my friend to write a review for the first edition but then decided it was too late to get it in (already in galley i guess.) my buddy was able to trade it for some pretty cool stuff at the time. years later the board finally began to circulate, its in the vault and parts of it have been featured in Jam of the Week, the taping section, 30 days of the dead. but not clear if it was in the vault way back in '97.

so yeah, Dave. L, release the 7/25/74 hounds also!

and 2/22 and 2/23 absolutely need to see the light of day sooner rather than later

7/25/74 is the big dog on paper, though I think I recall liking 5/25/74 better, but ya know how that goes situationally etc. 6/20/74 certainly should be near the top of a 74 list....I thought 5/12 and 6/8 were ok, 7/12 I don’t recall, though I’ve heard it? Ya know something will happen with the February shows....the rest I’m not familiar with?

JIM: “I felt 3’ tall and just wanted it to stop” lol...I remember my first time after like 12 hours or more, eventually at least lying in bed wishing I could fall asleep, and thinking “hmmmm, so this is what they mean by your either on the bus or off”, thinking it wasn’t ever going to fully go away and thus I’d be “on the bus” forever lol, and wasn’t sure yet how I felt about that?
Eventually I think I finally was able to go to sleep. The jury’s still out on the rest...

I suspect that the remaining 74’s will trickle out as DaP’s.

mhammond had it right many years ago. He called for a WOS box.. box up all the remaining '74's and give us a box.

I have to say, although the great ones are gone, it's not too late. We could have said the same thing about 1972 before we got the trunk.. I mean, they did release a good portion of this and decided for the box and re-released the already released ones for good measure.

Give us WOS Box Set Dave.. and include 2/22 and 2/23 as bonus discs.

Funny, I was just listening to Dick's #12 this week.

Of course I would love to see an October Winterland Box with video released, however, not sure they would go back to that again.
If they ever did, it would rival the sell out time of GSTL.

...thought we were going 74 lol, but ole DV called an Omaha audible at the line, which is nice, because 76 sounds better to me, as 74 is too close to the box stuff, and no offense to anyone, but I’m still kinda burnt on pre hiatus stuff, so 76 sounds good!
I’ve been really digging the 91/81 self imposed cleanse/distraction, but 76 will be a nice cleanse from the cleanse lol.

Speaking of 91/81, finished my 91 quota for now, and with the completion of 3/23/81 and 3/24/81 I only have 3/28 left which I hope to get to tonight or tomorrow...

But first I must praise these last 2 Looooondon Rainbow shows as they are stellar! They seemed to get a little better each night of this run, with a big step up on the 23rd. Overall great show, with the tours only Bird Song, set opener no less, Lay Me Down, cool Playing and jam, continued into the other one, Stella etc, and a rare Casey Jones! Sweet!

The 24 first set is awesome cept for the cowboy Bob BS, sorry, had to skip that, but is more than made up for with otherwise good set list.

I can’t believe I’ve never heard or heard about this one...everyone goes on about the next show, which is a good Shakedown, and I’ll be comparing as soon as I get a good chance, but I don’t recall 3/28 being this good?
From there they keep ascending until He’s Gone, which is ok, but perhaps too much of a pressure drop?
Fun drums, into wheel, and Trucking, but then status quo enders...

I've been enjoying that one ever since it was featured on 30 Days of Dead. You're right, it's at least a top 10, if not top 5 for me.

9/25 is an absolute classic with the Grateful Dead transcending through some tough times. I think Rex Jackson had recently passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.
