Absolutely ! - great album in every respect. Great choice, high lighting this section of 10/18/72 on vinyl, so it can be listened to in two ways-as a sequence of amazing music in its own right, and, on cd, as a component of the show from which it was selected. I know you could do that with the cds, select the jam on its own-but this vinyl edition draws attention to the jam. And it sounds fantastic.

It also occurs to me how much further out this music is, compared to the music I was listening to, back in 1972. It was a great year for rock music in Britain-especially if you were 14-15 like I was. Brilliant singles by David Bowie, Hawkwind, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple and Mott the Hoople come to mind. Which led to buying albums, going to live gigs etc. But nothing I heard was in the same league as the music on "Light Into Ashes". It would, I am sorry to say, have been completely over my head!

For me.. these shows represent a sizable chunk of known unreleased classic shows I hoped would one day get cleaned up and released. Certainly not the last great box set, yet treasured shows.. hallowed ground, epic, classic GD.. especially 10/18/72. Yet another high water mark in a high water mark year. I am so happy to see this get boxed set treatment.

Yes this is truly Light into Ashes with some sick work from Phil that Latvala and Gans nicknamed "Philo Stomp".

Coming out of the abyss via a Feelin' Groovy Jam that would make a top 10 Sixtus pick.

I would call the vinyl more of an obscured by mother of pearl than a silver, but maybe due to some pink hues from that new slipmat.

    Great news...

...here at Daverock Towers this morning. I had just finished my meditation session, when there was a faint knock on the front door. And there was the postman, handing me an L.P. sized parcel. Sure enough, it's Light Into Ashes. I haven't played it or even opened the cellophane coveing the album yet-it's only mid morning, and these things should be savoured. But what a great thing. No extra duty or cutoms to pay, either.

So good! Beautiful silver discs holding a tasty slice of the show. Great recording, thank you Bear!
Phil’s solo on Dark Star at the end is full, and the record does a nice fade away just as Morning Dew comes…for the next side.

Each record labels progression of the song cycle is cool too, nice touch.

    Enjoy!

Really grateful to Dave and Co. for making this release. I didn't feel like I could do 20 cds this year, but its great to have this tasty slice.

Mine arrived today and my family had plans that didn't involve me this afternoon :-) So I got to give this a full listen on the main home system. Really beautiful hour of music. Went by fast. Cosmic country jazz vibes would be my summary.

The Morning Dew was my highlight on first listen. Everyone playing off of another and kind of capping off the vibe of the whole jam. Sweet! My favorite Dick Latvala quote is something like "Morning Dews are like orgasms. Some were better then others, but they were all pretty good."

    Turn it up!

Dennis is fast! Jumped on it as soon as I saw it. Been buying more vinyl since working on my old school audio during the pandemic, and I have some (GD Hour partial on at least the "Run, Run, Rudolph show) or most of all the shows in the box set on good tapes so I went thrifty. Thanks Dave! Cheers!

having just grabbed the RSD Paris 72 box set, I wasnt ready for another $120+ buy - but this set is right up my alley; a bit easier on the wallet and I love to smoke a bowl and put the phones on to a long Playing, Other One, or Dark Star jam anyway. So loving this concept and looking forward to that bowl in October when it arrives :)

Had to double check in DeadBase before I ordered as the description has this as from 12-10-72. I think that is a Winterland show date. Cheers, and Latvala!
P.S. 7-29-21 Description has been corrected to 10-18-72 on order page product description but not header on this page that has Srinivasan on it. Thanks Marye (or editor).

There's also single album of Dark Star, split over two sides from Paris 5/4/72, the night after the 2021 RSD release. A perfect compliment. I think it was an RSD release from about 10 years ago.

For some reason I was thinking this box wasn't coming out until October 20. Then I got a shipping notification today! I'm really ready to hear this one!

My tracking notice says it will be at my house (CO) on the release date Oct. 1st.
Looks like this will be the only version of the St. Louis collection to be on time.
Curious that the CD box is not sold out yet. Maybe simple price hesitancy. Hard to think it's era related.
The date of this show is still wrong (12-10-72) on this page. But I guess everyone who cares has figured that out on their own. Light Into Ashes IS from 10-18-72.
Two days away, Cheers!

Maybe releases sell out quicker if they are of shows that people actually attended. Which, if it is true, bodes well for people who prefer late period shows, and less well for people who prefer the 60's. Won't make any difference to those who collect everything, I suppose.

The Mrs. gave me the gift of a whole morning for playing Dead so this will be spinning right after the Country Joe & the Fish and Friends (RGM 2-LP sale item) featuring two sides of "friends" Jerry, Mickey, Jorma, Jack, Steve Miller, etc. jamming on "Donovan's Reef Jam". Oh boy!
Cheers!

Because they offered numerous variants. Two different vinyl releases, the 20 CD total experience, the 3 CD mini and then a digital release, complete and the 12-10-71 show. That's a lot of choices

Yes, it does seem there are a quite few. Ive gone for this one and the 20 cd set-but choices can be something of a curse. Try ordering a cup of coffee in London !

Yessah! Fantastic sound on this Light into Ashes vinyl release. This Fall 1972 run was recorded almost exclusively by Owsley Stanley. Go back to your Dick’s picks Vol. 23, Dick’s Vol. 36( out on a 7 l.p. Box set on the Real Gone label),Dave’s picks Vol 11, which by the way has filler music from Oklahoma City 11-15-72,including a 30 minute Playing in the Band
That is not to be missed, and so on. Oh yes, and the vinyl release of Houston,Tx 11-18-72 , of course. These shows recorded by Bear are astonishing to hear in their full sonic power.

Does anyone have issues with the clarity of the vocals (and other sound within the midrange)? I was looking forward to a high quality LP but the vocals sound really muddy. I compared to other records including Europe 72 and Cornell 77, to see if I was having equipment issues but everything else is very clean in comparison

I just finished listening to the vinyl and what a terrific performance. Phil really outdoes himself on Dark Star, and Jerry’s vocals on Morning Dew is exquisite. Chris Bellman continues to consistently deliver amazing vinyl mastering here, and it sounds absolutely stunning from beginning to end. What a gift to have this on vinyl.

Still working through the box set and I highly recommend anyone out there who is on the fence about the set should definitely pick it up before it’s gone. Brilliant stuff indeed.

Also had no mid-range issues on first listen. It did sound accurate for the era though. And that would certainly lack some clarity compared to later recordings. Impressively dead silent tracking which is usually associated with a high quality pressing. Sometimes my impressions are simply influenced by things like where the mics were and what the staging was like. So often the bad ones are due to the hall as well, especially the echo-y ones like War Memorial. Will add an edit after my second listen this weekend. Cheers
Edit (11-25-21) Took a while to get back to this. Too much new music! There is a noticeable lack of middle especially on side A where the cymbals were muddy. Overall I wouldn't call it distortion, more of a mid quality recording or even how less expensive tape sounds. I did notice some pops at the end of side C and side D had a noticeable wobble from side to side tracking as if it was not centered correctly in the press. Not as high quality as I had expected. Hoping Dap vinyl #1 will be better.
Cheers and happy Thanksgiving!

Yeah, the distortion in the mid range - vocals especially - is really unfortunate. Everything else is fantastic which leads me to believe it is in the mastering or pressing. I’ll see is I can listen to the digital version to confirm my theory

Yes, I find it odd that Jerrys on the left on the cd version but on the right on this vinyl and too low in the mix. Distorted mid range as well, bobby's guitar sounds harsh as well as vocals on the vinyl?

I ordered the Light into Ashes vinyl two weeks ago and got the immediate email confirmation of the order at the time.
Since then, not a word from them.......tried the tracking option and it still says 'processing' exactly as it did two weeks ago.

Anyone had a similar experience ? Is this their current normal practice ? My credit card was debited on the same day as I ordered.

Don't start worrying yet. The dead org is about as slow as it comes. I think it mostly has to do with UPS (they suck!!!)

the other part of problem is they send messages about it being shipped when it hasn't even been boxed yet!!

I have my DaP 41 stuck in UPS land, they say sent to PO, PO says they are still waiting. I believe the PO. UPS hasn't brought it to the PO yet,,, I swear they wait until the truck is fill before it's sent to next stop!

Brave heart Tegan.
