I have this show going now into the second set. Fantastic recording and great show. Nice variety in the first set. Always enjoy a Let the Good Times Roll opener into Franklins! And we get a Stagger Lee.

Alright Doc is pointed us to a 1970 show and a video recommendation from Mary. It is going to be a busy couple of days. Thank you all.

By the way, don't you think Healy is sitting on a bunch of recordings he made for himself? They seem to be trickling out more and more and Miller is getting them out.

Remembering being linqued to this last year and going full slack jaw amazed on that NFA > Black Peter > NFA sequence. Wondered out loud whether the show had been recorded multi-track by King Biscuit as was their method, plus given that the Terrapin from 3/20/77 was also on that same KBFH show whether 3/20 was also recorded multitrack. There's speculation on deadessays that the Dead simply provided their own edited board mixes for the broadcast but haven't seen anything definitive on yea or nay on the multitrack question.
That Springer Inn show is killer - another show I stumbled into last year as part of the POTD inspired quest.
Will have to check out that Winterland Dancing. The old video is always wonderful.

There doesn't seem to be a copy on Archive.org (and hence relisten, etc.) but it was the second digital download. I suspect that is what the pm is about.

I listened to the 16th and 18th yesterday. The first is longer and an interesting setlist.. but the Download Series show sounds much better.

It's on the archive, I'm looking at it right now. Type in 1/18/70 grateful dead and it should come up. It's a great show, Cumberland Blues cuts out unfortunately, must be a tape flip.

Jim, you're right, it is 1/16/70, I typed in 1/18/70, 1/16/70 came up and I never saw the correct date, if it was a snake it would have bit me. It's a killer show all the same.

Lol, sorry sports fans to devolve from yer nice flow of late.
For various reasons, I haven’t been listening to ANY dead for a awhile: in December hit up the last stops on the 71 Doc train, a random tid bit once or twice, and the second set from 7/16/90 last night. First year I can remember I didn’t watch any New Years dead.
We went big again on Xmass music. Very little crooners etc, we try to find eclectic, different variations. Goo Goo Dolls was the big hit for us last Xmass, Nora Jones this year, though the Billy idol disc was fun. Grandma Got Runover is still king for this Ralphy!
Been on a increasingly encompassing jazz kick too, receiving a shit ton of great sheet from Santa. Oh, Bill Evans! Like a lightning bolt! Can’t get enough!
But for about a month now I’ve started digging in my own vault of old band recordings. Never have had enough uninterrupted time, or the gumption, to go through all that embarrassing noise. Like seeing yourself on tv, or hearing yourself recorded, it can be hard to critically listen to yourself. But to try and find something, anything listenable, I’ve had to go through every show/song and try to find at least one version of the main material, especially the originals.
Taking way longer than planned, and I’m only getting close to finishing one band!
So being a nice cold, crisp sunny day, I figured I’d take a coffee break and check in with y’all whilst I spin the obligatory anniversary show 43 years this very evening! Third row. Gets no love, I still think it’s a hellava first show!

Oro - recently came across a really interesting Bill-Evans-centric article by Steve Silberman: Broken Time - “Nardis” and the Curious History of a Jazz Obsession. Ran in Believer Magazine 2018. Nardis is a Miles Davis composition (you probably knew that.). Have yet to go down the Nardis rabbit hole but plan on it soon.

My go to Christmas album last couple years was by John Fahey - The New Possibility: john Fahey's Guitar Soli Christmas Album, on CD paired with Christmas with John Fahey Vol. II. Forgot to pull out the Mermens christmas album this year - just might have to do that.

Hi all! Checking in from Baltimore! This is my first post of the new year, but I have been lurking and keeping up with the shenanigans around these parts.

If I may throw out a pick for tomorrow or the next day (if tomorrow has been decided,) then may I humbly suggest 12/30/86? I have been listening to it all week, and I can't seem to get enough. Great SBD recording (esp. for a mid-80s,) great setlist, GREAT ENERGY! The Neville's guest in the 2nd set on an Iko>Man Smart, which is just one of MANY highlights from the show!

Also, as a Baltimore guy, I really love the artwork for 41, Hon!

By the way I believe the 1/18/70 show from Doc was a fooler and a test. As mentioned this show was released as Download Series #2.

That Tacoma Christmas with John Fahey Vol.ll (TAK-7045) has been our favorite non-traditional X-mas album since the mid 80's. Didn't break that out this year though. Found too many traditional various artist hardware/tire store gems the last couple of years at Triple Play Records (G.J.,CO) and the salvation army for a pittance. Love the second side where he gets a little weird with the bent chords on his Christmas Fantasy pts.1 & 2. Never found him until then and only through his assoc. with Leo Kottke. Two amazing guitarists!

Predisclosure.. I tire of I need Bertha's Good Lovin'. Sorry.. personal reasons and often a waste of a good Bertha, but this one if spirited and moves along just fine so forgive me.

But they sure did find their groove upon their return to stage. Sweet second set from start to finish. Really nice show, what a baptism.

I gotta ask.. were psychedelics involved?

No electronic devices were involved, hey I was just barely 16 and hadn’t even been smoking weed very long lol.
I didn’t go electric until my tenth show, which I think was a good way to go/grow?
Hell, I was naturally high! just being there, but plenty more weed than my teeny bopper head had ever seen before lol.
After going to concerts for a year, and seeing a cross section of radio favorites etc, the Dead blew my perceptions of everything R&R out the window! I’d been getting more and more prepped and ready to see them for over a year and FINALLY got the chance. One of the greatest days of my life!

Now, it’s kinda a weird show, I mean you can feel the weird energy, which is understandable all things considered. The energy sort of ebbs and flows but often peaks nicely. Kieth is all over the place: sometimes engaged and his usual self, other times you’d swear he wasn’t even there…obviously end of the line, though I didn’t know any all of that back then.
But overall it has some great peaks, and I love the Other one through drums and that cool little jam with a Serengeti feel, then quick tag of TOO before sliding into DS. Not the greatest show ever,but historically and enjoyably a nice way to get yer cherry popped! Good aud tape too! I d been listening to my shitty digitized cassette version for years and finally heard a much better recording this time around!

I agree on the Miracle> Bertha> Good Lovin’ theme. It was cool and had nice flow when they first started doing it, but by this point it was starting to feel stale. (not that I knew that then) I was talking to my buddy BOO469 who was in the balcony and he reminded me that the balcony was shaking so hard during Bertha, that the venue was worried and had to have it checked out before allowing another Rock show lol.

BC, I don’t, or didn’t know much about Bill Evans except the Kinda Blue connection. When I had the Ref 3 in to its maker last year, he loaded a couple of Hi Res albums on there and sorta like with the dead: I’d listened, but not really heard, then, lightning struck and we’ve been “diggin’ Bill Evans” big time ever since. Santa brought the Everyone Digs BE, AND the Everybody Still Digs box set, plus the complete Village Vanguard recordings.
Obviously, I’ve not scratched the surface of that plus a whole stack of other stuff too! Ho, Ho, Ho indeed!
But like most things, the down side has been less dead, but a full cleanse was needed after the big year last trip round the sun: all the 71s except about a dozen early in the year, a few dozen 81s, a bunch of hot 91s, along with most of the cool picks here, and of course some free range freaking too!
Looking forward to concentrating on 82, 92, obviously some 72, with a little 67, 77, and 87. But I’m not there yet, have to finish phase one of my music project first, but that’s starting to get really teadious, so I’m going to have to start getting in some shows next week, need more balance, and time lol, now if only I didn’t need to sleep lol.
ONWARD

Good way to pop the cherry OB, and you get a Dark Star to boot. Must have been a good experience and the end of another era of the Dead. Aud recording is decent, maybe someday a SB will pop up

Enjoying 12/30/86 in Oakland Otis. Nice sounding Miller transfer from 2017. Nice Althea, Cumberland, Esau, TMNS to end the first set. China Rider to start the second set. Good call on this one Otis. The return of Jerry and the boys. It only gets better from here.

Pick of the day: Honolulu, Hawaii, January 23, 1970

Officially released as a Dave’s Pick in August 2016, here we have an interesting look at the band just prior to the classic Fillmore West/East shows of February 1970, when they were still in the process of transitioning from the large jam format to a more song oriented approach.

Which isn’t to say there aren’t big jams here, because there are. An Other One AND a Dark Star. Plus some new Workingman’s Dead material, cowboy songs, and greasy Pigpen material. Can’t go wrong with all that………..

It seems that sometimes official releases get shelved, neglected, oft time forgotten. This one is worth revisiting, as is the “bonus material” from the following night (which includes another Black Peter, more Pigpen, and the rare Mason’s Children).

As far as official releases go, we can’t always get what we want, but we get what we need……

What is a classic show? Can it be defined? Is it based on facts, or feeling? I know what "my classics" are, what are yours? If there are too many, does the idea get diluted?

I'm interested in people's thoughts, in a conceptual sort of way............

Never enough 1970. I'm in. Been a while since I have listened to this one also. I'm expanding this to include 1/24 we we get an always welcome Mason's Children and Dancing in the Streets

Would it be fair to say that a classic show is one where they play a typical set list for the year, but to an exceptional standard?
Some shows seem to have attained "classic" status over the years. Shows that have been written about by acclaimed Deadheads, and which somehow seem more than the sum of their parts. All the obvious ones- 2/14/68, the Fillmore West shows from Spring 1969, Fillmore East February 1970, Binghampton 5/2/70 etc etc. On up to Winterland New Years Eve 1978, which plays like a grande finale to the 70's - 12 months early. Obviously a subjective view !

Egypt 1978 seem to me to be classic shows on account of their circumstances more than the bands actual playing. I do think the Veneta Fairgrounds show from August 1972 is exceptional...but I sometimes wonder if that has been accorded legendary status, to some extent, on account on its circumstances. There are pages and pages about it in the Deadheads Taping Compendium. Is it really so much better than lesser known shows from Fall 1972?

Just one man's opinion:

The 8/27/72 Creamery Benefit is one of the greatest overrated shows ever. Granted, it has it's moments, but almost every E72 is better and many Fall 72 shows are equal or better. I think back in the day it acquired classic status based on the circumstances and the fact that it was one of the first widely circulated 1972 recordings.

Speaking of overrated, don't forget Cornell. LOL!!!!

Egypt? Not classic. The Winterland shows that followed----pretty fine, maybe semi-classic. 12/31/78? One Dark Star does not a classic make, especially if under rehearsed. Not classic, but pretty good--and big fun---New Year's show.

When it comes to classics, don't forget 10/12-13/68, 4/6/69, FW 2/70, 5/15/70, Port Chester Fall 70, 4/28/71, 11/7/71, 12/5/71, 5/3/72, 5/26/72. Well, I could on and on, but I'll stop now and maybe do some work...........

2/14/68, 10/12/68, 2/27/69, 3/1/69 (the 1st set opener is hard to top from any era), 5/2/70. A short list, There are so many great shows after 5/2/70, but I don't listen to enough Dead music to really know which would be considered classics, I'll leave that to the pros around here.

Okay, I would like to offer up 6/6/91, Deer Creek. This is a good period for the Dead and very well recorded. Another Pearson Healy.

Oh and if you didn't listen to it yet, you should check out Otis's pick of 12/30/86, worth a listen, good show.

Doc - with those 1978 shows - Egypt and Winterland, I was thinking of them as being classics because of the surrounding circumstances, not the actual playing. I would agree that the Winterland shows in October 1978 are better than both. But Egypt has become legendary merely because it took place in Egypt...again, The Taping Compendium goes to town on them. Maybe its a case of - nice shows, shame about the music.
With Winterland 78, that seemed classic because again, you had Ken Kesey in the mix - and John Cipollina jamming away there. The Other One and Dark Star show up. All very legendary. Unfortunately none of these ingredients are actually all that good - the Dark Star and Other One are very pale compared to the great earlier ones. And John Cipollina doesn't look as though he knows quite what to do half the time. According to Lenny Kaye, in his recent book "Lightning Striking", when Cipollina played with Man in 1975 -"True to form, he is out of tune, as if tuning matters in his moving target of temprament." He was John Cipollina for chrissake.
But that Dead New Years 78 show feels like the end of an era to me.

Hit 1/23/70 etc, didn’t resonate as much as usual, but enjoyed. Hit RT 2.1 from 90 after, enjoyed that a little more on this occasion?
12/30/86 rollin…6/6/91 on the list…

I forgot to list my favourites - 11/10/67, 2/14/68, 2/28/69, 3/1/69, 5/2/70 - that 4 cd set from April 1971 Fillmore East - if I could only have one of the shows it would be 4/29/71. And 2 from 1972, as it's the year I play most often -5/26/72 and 9/21/72 are both ones I have played within the last month or so - and are both incredible. But there are so many from that year I could pick.
I haven't played any from 73 or 74 recently - but there is gold in them thar hills too.

Now I know they are watching us.. first, Cone Kid made the almanac, then for the second time in like a month.. they played the pick of the day on SiriusXM. Yesterday and today, we got 1/23/70 and 1/24/70 meaning I got almost a complete twofer both nights plus a listen a couple months ago. It's one thing to listen to a show and shelf it.. but getting warm and cozy with some of these classics is another thing altogether.

Was sanding a little red oak for a house rehab proj. the last few days.. which afforded me the opportunity to catch up on pick of the day.. After getting caught up, I decided to re-hit Dave's 40 with my free time before 41 hits my porch.. that China Rider through the end of the show the first night contains some powerful juju.. driving Terrapin, a really killer ha ha space into an thundering Other One/Morning Dew : The Weight to end the show. Great recording and a nice counter balance to everything else we have been listening too and everything else going on in the world. Goodness, those were two really good shows and the recordings shine.

Did I miss an Otis appearance? argh.

Ha! Now we know why Conekid always gets his releases first Jim.

.. was heading out to CO with my windowless white van, stalking the mail carriers or the perfect Dave's Picks delivery boxes thinking I could get mine a few days earlier by grifting Oroboros' consistent early arrival. Had I known Cone Kid always got his first.. it would have saved a couple thousand miles on the van and about $1,200 in gas not to mention that uncalled for restraining order.

Friday is also the release of 3/1/69 vinyl. A couple of people claim that they ordered it on Amazon but I can’t find it there. But, what I did see there was 8 copies of 5-15-70 Road Trips, presumably Real Gone reprints. So if you need a copy you know where to look.

I have my 3/1/69 Fillmore West Vinyl in hand.. haven't gotten around to opening it yet.

I’ve heard rumors from our insiders down there that Dejoy has it out for us Freaks: seems all the constant Dead mail is mucking up the works, so a specific insidious incident involving such has really got em stewing. Yeah,I feel bad for Josh and company. Those boys played their arses off. It’s going to take a lot of sleep overs this summer and Mrs Diggs s’mores before the boys will stop having nightmares.

I have always enjoyed this show. Short, mellow show. Love that second set, Comes a Time into some extreme noodling into Eyes. Great stuff! Then they give you a nice double encore.
Going to continue on with the rest of the release from 7/16/76 today.

Unfortunately I didn’t get on board until #21, but I’ve made good progress!
Think eventually I can find reasonably priced 14, 15, and 20, and copies of 1, 4, and 7. The older stuff is just too expensive, but if I can eventually get these, I’ll then have copies of 1-12, and real versions of the rest.

Hadn’t heard it in a while, so nice to catch up, and 76 is a good space for my head right now. Fully enjoyed!

The next night was one of the first tapes I ever had, and is one of my favorite 76 shows. Selfishly, since I have a killer bootleg copy, I hope they don’t release it though so that another, that I don’t have, can come out instead lol.

But since there’s no new pick, imma gonna go back to Jim’s 6/29/76 pick, which looks to be another fine 76 delight!
