“Welcome to the unique, enduring phenomenon of the Grateful Dead in New York City, a mutual devotion, forged in concert, that ran for nearly as long as the band itself—from June 1, 1967, a free show in Tompkins Square Park on the Lower East Side (ahead of the band’s official, local bow at the Cafe Au Go Go), to the Dead’s last Garden run, six nights in October 1994…the Dead’s affinity for New York City…was instant and arguably their most profound with any city aside from San Francisco.” - David Fricke

They got on the bus to the Port Authority, rode in on the Long Island Railroad and the New Jersey Transit line. They traveled North, South, and West on the 1, 2, and 3 subway lines, their numbers growing as they descended upon Penn Station. Some rolled up in those iconic New York yellows. Some walked excitedly through the bright lights of Broadway and Times Square, meeting up with old friends on the way and picking up a few new ones too as they ascended The Garden's stairs. Maybe you were among them - lightly buzzed on the way in, fully aglow on the way home. New York City was in its prime and damn if the Grateful Dead wasn't going to rise up to meet it! If you were there, we call on you to join us as we recapture that MSG magic and if you weren't, we invite you along on the epic journey that is IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN: MADISON SQUARE GARDEN '81 '82 '83.

Numbered and limited-edition to 12,500, this 17CD set celebrates the band’s rich history at “the world’s most famous arena,” introducing six previously unreleased shows recorded at MSG between 1981 and 1983. It offers a front-row seat to the Dead in the early 1980s, an overlooked and underestimated era of rebirth for the band. At the time of the recordings, the group featured Brent Mydland. Mydland’s vocal power and colorful keyboard palette energized the band, invigorating older material like “The Wheel,” “Truckin’” and “Eyes of The World.” He also gave the band more musical flexibility, which encouraged them to dust off rarely aired treasures like “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” and “Crazy Fingers.”

IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN touches on the three-year period after 1980’s GO TO HEAVEN was released, a time when the Dead were constantly on the road, playing more than 200 dates. While they were in no rush to return to the studio during this time, they continued to write new music. In 1982 and ’83, the band performed most of the songs that would appear on 1987’s IN THE DARK. The new collection includes performances of four songs from that album – “Touch Of Grey,” “Hell In A Bucket,” “Throwing Stones,” and “West L.A. Fadeaway” – plus the B-side, “My Brother Esau.”

Due September 23rd, IN AND OUT OF THE GARDEN comes in a custom box featuring new artwork by Dave Van Patten celebrating the band’s eclectic fanbase, with a cavalcade of illustrated Dead Heads. The collection also includes detailed liner notes by award-winning music journalist David Fricke, who explores the band’s connection to the Big Apple. It features newly restored and speed-corrected audio by Plangent Processes, mastered by Jeffrey Norman.

The marketing of Box Sets has definitely varied through the years, but I don't think they have ever been marketed like Dicks Picks, which were all two track recordings or cassette masters. Some had the old caveat emptor, while others talked up how good the recordings were (see Dick's #33).

    2011-Eurpoe 72-Multi Track. $450.
2012-Spring 1990. Recorded in Multi Track. They used the Cutler two track down mix.$199

I love, love Dave's Picks Vol. 8, 11/30/1980. Jeffrey Norman did a fantastic job with the Matrix. The audience sounds great but the Matrix sounds better. The soundboard is very good, but as noted sounds a little thin.

A great release and a go to for me that is still in regular rotation.

Oro, you make plenty of good points...

... and I appreciate your willingness to share your unbiased and non-judgmental thinking. A comment on one or two of your points. Since my first live show over 40 years ago, I became an avid collector, even tried my hand at being a taper-hanger-on ... Having a clean SBD was nirvana, because somehow, those shows were wonderful performances (IMO) AND the sound was clean and clear. But there were plenty of audience tapes that featured great performances and the sound was bearable (for me, the Hollywood Palladium in August, for example). The other factor for me is the shows I've been to ... whether SBD or Aud, they are all special and hold a special place in my memory banks, regardless of quality and performance. And on to another point of yours regarding review of any particular year. For sooo long I ignored 78 and 79 shows .... either didn't have enough good material in my collection or was unimpressed with what I'd heard at the time.... I always think of Tennessee Jed being the example ... it went from a quick, boppy, tight moving tune in the 72 time frame to a slow, ponderous, plodding, molasses-filled puddle of goo in the 78/79 time frame.... at least that's what I thought for a long time. I've since come to enjoy 78/79 (but really like 80 too!!) much more ... either because of being exposed to great performances, or because of the great recordings (Betty boards from summer of 78). Again, thanks for your thoughtful analysis!! .......tcc

Wow.. there's a lot to unpack here. First, thanks Oro for putting something this difficult together.

It's hard to argue there is no bias in how we perceive. Our brains scan, absorb, look for and recognize patterns every waking hour. Patterns on top of patterns and we are quick to recognize a familiar pattern, then we classify it - and so it is.. fact (at least in our own grey matter). That's how those cool optical allusions work, we process until we have it 'figured out' then we move on even if we are wrong and the source was/is some form an illusion or some form of bias.

I agree with your era argument too.. a good show it is a good show and even with bad shows there might a shining moment or three that makes it worth it (thinking that Visions of Johanna from 3/18/95 for example). I've also always said the later years would be viewed differently if they were better recorded or Betty recorded. There's a great 82 show you tossed out on the pick of the day thread that sounds really very good for a cassette master, what happened in 83, 84 and 87? Some of those boards do not sound very good at all and these shows and years are lost to most. It could be the crowd got rowdier and louder, lots of factors at play and there are good sounding boards from these years. But I think we know Healy mixed it up some sound better than others. I also think Don Pearson getting involved with taping helped as did the gradual shift to PCM DAT's.

Point being.. if we are going to take that extra step beyond listening and grade or judge, the recordings and the performance must be measured somehow or at least accounted for. Gestalt is the word I am thinking of. The whole picture (soundscape).

I vary from you a bit that audience recordings when well done can be superior to soundboards, ignore matrix efforts a minute. I agree with what you are saying in the years when board tapes declined.. but I don't think it's necessarily a bias to like really well-done soundboards over a really well done aud or matrix. So true, it's not what it sounded like being there, but it's a purer distillation of what the artists were doing on stage before it hit the airwaves, speakers, crowd noise, that passing jet, etc. Those passing jets are a downer.

I'm not disagreeing with what you wrote, more adding context and an opinion. I like the subject matter and it's not something that is easy to put pen to paper.

I need to give this more thought.. a very interesting topic.

I did buy this box. With the exception of the few cassette masters on 30 trips, this is the first box set that is comprised of cassette masters. This is a turning point, the first box sets were only multi-track and they were quick to advertise this.. two track were Dicks Picks (now Dave's) and box sets were multi-track. So we have entered a new era. I certainly hope they smoke, I bought this box. It's a little risky though. Can't wait to listen for myself, most of these shows will be first listens.

Keep it alive folks, that's all I have for now. My image is that of the Indian leaders sitting in a circle in the teepee, talking, listening, adding to, and taking a hit off the peace pipe to contemplate what has been said.

I was wondering if the ridiculous international shipping charge for the box set was down to dead.net or Rhino.

I visited the Rhino store and found an almost identical box set: Chicago at Carnegie Hall complete - a 16 CD box set with books etc. for $179.98. I duly put one in the cart and headed for the checkout. Every screen was identical to those on dead.net which is not surprising. Having entered my details I then saw that the international shipping charge was... $15.99.

So why is the international shipping charge for this box set from dead.net set at $70 while an almost identical box set from Rhino.com costs $15.99?

Someone's having a laugh at the customer's expense.

$70 international shipping for the MSG Box but a similar Box at Rhino ships for $16?

A 10% off coupon code that actually works for the MSG Box, but no official announcement for it so that everyone can use it?
I had already placed my order, so I paid full price.

Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Have shipping costs increased similarly (on a percentage basis) for domestic orders? I thought my eyebrows went up too when I saw price+shipping but can't remember if it indeed increased comparably.

-edit- Thanks Charlie3. Looks like shipping for LTTR + shirt last year for me was $12, and for the Garden + DaP 43 Glass this year for me is $27.

Thanks to simonrob for his detective work.So the people “down the corridor” at Rhino will still international ship a similar sized box for $15.99 while in the office next door Dead.net want $70 for the same thing.
At least this answers all questions about whether there is a 450% blow out in shipping costs although I knew from my experience with other retailers this isn’t the case.
So effectively Dead.net are probably still paying $15.99 for shipping but then adding on a $54 surcharge that they are putting in their pockets. No wonder they are staying quiet.
They still have around 8 weeks to make this right.Revert to the $15.99 charge and refund people who paid $70 the difference.
Of course they are more likely to make no changes and lose most of their international customers.C’mon surprise me.

That’s a pretty big increase that needs an explanation from Rhino.

Digital downloads are available, so maybe go that route. They cost less than the Box, even for the highest price tier which presumably is 24/96.

Also, you could cancel your Box order and tell them it’s because of the outrageous shipping increase. Maybe that will get their attention. And maybe not.
As long as it doesn’t sell out right away you could still order it later. Or just go with the download.

Definitely not paying $70 shipping. Will wait and see if anything changes and might consider the digital download. I guess maybe that’s what they want?

Still going strong, and sounding better then ever. Charlie just put out a CD a couple of years ago with Elvin Bishop that sounds great. Charlie Musslewhite has always been one of my favorite harmonica players..

I got the coupon from Warner Support as a thank you / make up on a mix up on an unrelated Dead order I was working with their team on. They resolved my issue and coupon was a bonus in my mind, which I did use for the Lyceum boxset. I was not aware of it prior to my interaction, not sure where LMG found it. The only other coupon I was aware in recent years, was back during the FTW ticket fiasco for Levi Stadium and they had a coupon due to that. I did take advantage of that coupon to get the Europe '72 AME.

As for Int'l Shipping, we had an earlier discussion regarding books. When I order a book from Folio Society to the US, I am charged $16 for a single book and $32 for two or more for their standard shipping which takes about around 2 -3 weeks to reach me from my date of order. If I want to use their expedited service for multiple books, the cost is $52 which takes about a week. So, I got a birthday coupon for $15 off a book and used it to get Dr. No, which is a thin book, but I considered the shipping cost a wash with the coupon. When I placed an order for Christmas gifts last year, I did use the Expedited service and had a somewhat large order, so it was a heavy box.

I agree that Warner should not take advantage of our ravenous fandom and the international shipping costs should be the same for any Warner product based on dimensions and weight. A DaP is much smaller and lighter than one of the yearly box sets, plus the boxsets are better packed than the DaPs in the US. I'm curious, but what was the International Shipping for the Lyceum LP weighing in at 28lbs? I think DaveRock probably ran the numbers when he was contemplating the Lyceum box. I'm not trying to stir the pot, but wanted to add perspective as we are so used to free shipping from the Amazon evil empire.

International shipping for this 28lb monster is $98 which seems reasonable when compared to the shipping for the MSG box.

Sorry to hear about this shipping charge and drama.

This looks like a solid set. I have passed on the box sets the past few years, mostly out of having more Dead than I can listen to regularly. I've been doing my Dave's subscription and picking up a vinyl release about every other year and that's been working for me. I did regret not picking up the 76 box.

I used to comment a lot here that I'd like to see more 80s releases and great that's happening lately. I have heard probably all but the final show in this box and they are good ones. About 10 yrs ago I got really into the Hunter's Trix matrix recordings - highly recommend those - and listened to lots of early 80s. The 81 and 82 shows here all have Hunter's matrixes and are quite good.

3/9/81 is top shelf early 80s to my ears. Great show throughout. Many excellent moments. I've long wondered if this one would be released as a Dave's pick. It's a personal favorite.

I also remember really enjoying the first 82 show in this box, though I haven't heard it in a long time. I'm going to re-visit.

Agree with others that matrix recordings, and audience tapes, add a lot to the sound of the early 80s shows. I'm glad these tapes got plangent and do wonder what the overall sound will be like.

That's all to say - I'm thinking hard about this one. The single show is a no brainer. The box wasn't really in my plans but I do like hot shows from 81 and 82 a lot. Gonna think about this one and hope an extra 200 comes my way soon :-)

Not really their thing here at dead.net, but might have been fun to produce a smaller number of these on cassette. These are cassette shows on a number of levels. Lot's of younger bands putting things out on cassette right now.

Super excited to hear Dave's 43 at high volume in the near future!

Cheers ya'll

Yes, taking all the factors into account, the Lyceum box is worth it to me.
Shipping costs have made me much more selective over the last year or so, and it works for me not subscribing for Dave's Picks - I simply don't want them all anymore. I still haven't played the whole 1987 Dave's all the way through yet. Probably never will. So far I have been able to get the ones I want with no trouble. Same with boxes - pass by the ones I am merely interested in, and get the ones that really appeal to me.

I notice that, currently, while I can look at and order Apparel in the store none of the music items are accessible. Luckily, I don’t need to place an order but it would be impossible if I needed too.

Have been waiting for response regarding the excessive international shipping charges for our friends across the water. Some kind of rebate/refund/credit/adjustment seems appropriate, even if it has been farmed out to a third party shipper. I will hold off purchasing this release until something shakes loose.

DMCVT - I wrote the customer service folks on the 13th just looking for the reason(s) or rationale for such a huge jump in shipping fees, but I’ve only received the “huge volume of inquiries…patience” response so far. I know the answer will be buffed and shined, not likely to be a revelation to them al a “WTF!! Did we do that?? Sorry, someone hit the wrong keys when inputting the info….”. I’m about 40 miles east of Toronto, so technically “international”, but I still cannot fathom the price. Oh well, I have a considerable library of Dead, including some first rate box sets (including 30 Trips), and my interests in music, like most folks on the boards here, go way beyond the Dead.
My little town has been chosen for an annual Hells Angels get together this weekend. Sheriff Andy and Deputy Barney Fife expect close to 1,000 HA members to descend on our little town to eat, drink, and have Mary.
I’d like to think the newly released DaP 43 would be right in the sweet spot for one and all attending.

I also mailed customer service asking why the international shipping charges had been increased by amounts that cannot be considered either rational or reasonable. I too am awaiting an answer. I don't hold out much hope that charges will revert to "normal" but the chance is always there.

They probably won't reply.

I hope they do, but doubt they will.

Just ordered some Dave Matthews Band Live albums and t shirts from Music Today. Ships out of VA. To Canada it was $22 US which included duty and tax. It was $18 US if you didn't want duty and tax included. Now that is a deal!

That's a kind gesture, and as an overseas purchaser ( if not of this actual box), I would like to say - thanks. I can't speak for other posters on here, but I feel sure that no one would want you to miss out on this box by waiting for a reply that may simply never arrive.

DMCVT - DaveRock is absolutely right - A very gracious gesture on your part, thank you, but it is obvious now there won’t be a reply. I mean, I’ve waited 8 days already, they clearly have no cleverly worded answer that will satisfy subscribers. What can they really say, anyway? The shipping cost is what it is, so for us outside the USA, it is a case of “suck it up, buttercup”. It should be a dead issue on the boards now (yea, pun intended), and should not suck the oxygen out of the room for DH’s looking to buy this box, and revel in it’s contents. But thanks again, DMCVT, and everyone else who weighed in on this matter on our behalf. A better group of folks, you could not find.

Already saw a few Hell’s Angels rumble in town for this weekend’s festivities, and I was just out walking the hound, and could hear this roar and rumble going up the main drag in town as more and more headed through town. If they do get the anticipated thousand or so Angels they expect, I’m sure it will drive the local police bat shit haha!
I won’t repeat Michael Buffer’s infamous copyrighted phrase, but I believe “rumble” may have a double meaning here!!

Thanks for feedback, simply wished to take a stand, make myself clear. Certainly will not miss out on the music, have already auditioned much on archive.org streaming to help decision. Which comes down to, with so much music collected for more than 50 years, how much more. Friends are buying the box, am fortunate to have bought direct and timely from dead.net most anything I could ever want, being short just a few Europe72 shows. Kind folks have shared over the years. This box will be available for a few weeks anyway, just wanted to see dead.net respond if they would. Some kind of preemptive notice on the increase would have been helpful to all.

Of course they will never publicly respond on this board, despite years of c*ck ups they never have, years of faulty product, substandard product, ( poor quality cds, scratched and covered in glue/gunk, musical drop outs which are never alluded to in Daves breathless puff videos, box cutter blues?) Combined with a tardy hit and miss customer service( of course customer service might not be dimensioned according to the number of complaints generated! I have always been happy with the eventual response of a guy called Daniel, if I eventually am able to get his attention, and of course kudos to Marye).
Sorry, dear friends, its all just product to Deadnet, and we are just rubes.
But hey, lets just smile, smile, smile!

I still have not got a response on emails I sent when E72 was announced. There will be no response. MaryE was the one and there seems to be no response from her either. MaryE? testing...testing... Mary? are you there?
This lack of communication from deadnet and rhino is typical, when confronted, they dumb up and act like they don't read these boards. Like they don't know that there is a problem, just crickets. Sorry for all overseas purchasers.
Over the years, I have had to replace many a non-playable disc due to one of the reasons mentioned by Dogon. It's sad but true.

I have found dead.net/rhino responsive to any issues. Damaged cd, they've sent me another, order/address change they've adjusted for me. I think Ive purchased ever boxset and have to think hard of any quality issues, $10-13 per cd with a fancy box/book, not bad for a limited run.
yes the shipping is a bit high for US and esp international.

I got the lp, but no way to play.

I'll get a cd of it if it's available. Still sorting thru a ton of music sent my way and in the back of my mind I'm hoping there is a copy of it in there (I doubt it).

But for now I have the LP.

Despite having a mountain of new music CDs to listen to I found myself looking at Netflix(UK) randomly and I noticed a documentary ‘Stamping Ground’ this covers a festival in Holland in 1970. It has a eclectic choice of groups. With 20 minutes to still watch my, admittedly faulty, memory has from the US Santana, Canned Heat, Country Joe, It’s A Beautiful Day, The Flock, Dr John, The Byrds and Jefferson Airplane and from the UK Al Stewart, Family, Pink Floyd, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Soft Machine. It’s helped to pass an hour and a half. As the world gets ever more ridiculous music helps to keep me on a even keel.

EDIT Having just seen the credits I realise I had forgotten the UK group Quintessence.

No relation to the above but I notice that Neil Young is finally releasing ‘Time Fades Way’ as a stand alone CD on August 12th. I have the LP but no way to play it.

EDIT 2 Looking at the end credits I notice the guitarist and singer with T. rex was identified as Mark Polin!

Dennis - Gotcha! I knew you got the Record Store release, now I get it is a “keeper”. Take heart, I think - I think - the new Miles Bootleg Volume 7 - due this September - includes this release on Disc 3, or at least is recorded at the same show.
Miles is among a select group of artists with a long lineage and a wealth of recordings, like Dylan, the Stones, and our beloved Dead, whose vault of unreleased material, both live and studio, would be absolutely Holy Grail stuff to get at.
Choose wisely, indeed…

That festival, at Kralingen in Rotterdam, just down the road from where I now live, was at the same time as the Bath Festival of Blues and Progressive Music 1970 in Shepton Mallet and many acts appeared at both. I had a great time at Bath and still consider that the line-up was the best of any festival. I was unaware of the Stamping Ground Netflix documentary. I shall look out for that. I do have a 3LP set of Kralingen which has a good selection of the bands that were present.

Thanks for the heads up Colin, it's one of my favourite Neil albums. It's a shame that it's just the original lp and not a big box, they must have recorded a lot of that tour. I'd buy a 17cd box of the Stray Gators in a heartbeat.

Was carpooling with a buddy who who had this on his streaming service. A great set.

This MSG box has me pretty excited. My first show was 7-1-84 and the years preceding were the Deeds general sound coming into the live experience. The momentum from there real built up for them musically from that point until about the time Bruce's semi-regular tenure ended in 92.

...of the listening party from March 9, 1981 has me starting to really anticipate this box. Sounds pretty good on the computer speakers, high hopes for the big boy stereo. When I started listening to the dead in 1983 or so, Dead Set was in regular rotation on my morning ride to school listening, and most of the bootlegs that I subsequently acquired in the next couple years were from the early '80s, so this will be a great addition to the current collection. Similar to Spacebro, the first dead related show that I saw was JBG at Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY, summer of 1984, so my dead show attendance was mostly mid and late '80s, but I dig the way that early '80s stuff sounds.

Picked up a couple of the Neil Young archival releases lately, the 1971 solo acoustic ones, but that Neil Young and Crazy Horse live at Fillmore East is on my list of things to pick up, checked out a couple of tracks on utoob recently and dug the extended Down by the River. Good stuff.

I too am excited for the MSG Box. Actually, the 3-10-81 show was my first which I attended with two of my 4 older brothers and our younger sister... very special!
The show itself was excellent! Underrated i'd say, in part due to the opening equipment bomb during Half-Step. But after that, the show was EXCEPTIONAL! Note the 24 tracks... you know the boys were there to PLAY! ...and play they did... The recovery from Half-Step I thought was pretty cool and then to launch into Franklins Tower :-) you could feel the Garden begin to rock (literally). The Lazy Lightening>Supplication was ripping I though as was BEW and DEAL to close out 1st set. The Scarlet>Fire was tight! very underrated (IMHO) and then the back end of the 2nd set was hot! A NYC Truckin' is always special but what is not reported here was the tease of (my favorite!) Smokestack Lightening :-) I was only 14, but I looked at my oldest brother without saying a word, jaw on the floor...Could this be happening?!?!?! :-) Unfortunately not, but the tease was something I'll never forget. The Sugar Mag was electric and then the two encores were the perfect balance of Rockin Garden followed by the gentle sendoff of Brokedown Palace... goosebumps! This show is underrated. You will totally dig this show! Mama, Mama many worlds I've come Since I first left home... (to see the Dead!)

My advice to anyone who was desperate enough for this that they caved and paid the $70 shipping scam is to cancel your preorder.
It won’t sell out anytime soon.If the St. Louis box is still available after a year this will be available for at least as long.
Tell them in your cancellation that the reason you are doing it is because of the shipping charge.Maybe loss of business will force them to address this.
Imagine how you’ll feel if they “review” their shipping charges in October and adjust them back to cost. That is a lot of money you have given them.

That looks like good advice. I'm not so sure that this box will take as long, or longer, to sell out than the St Louis box though. For the simple reason that I suspect a lot of people on here prefer buying copies of shows that they attended rather than those that they did not. And more people who buy such things saw them in 81-83 than did in 71-73, I should think.

Yes, The Listen to the River Box has not sold out yet, which doesn't surprise me and I think is good for people that didn't buy it right out of the gate.

The days of selling boxes out in a day might be over (Get Shown the Light), unless they release something like the full run at Winterland October 74 with video.

Lot of cool songs about a chick named Jenny.

Here’s a little piece from 3 songs about Jenny, just ‘cause I’m bored when I should be getting some work done, but it’s just too hot to think. If anybody else is bored on a sweltering afternoon feel free to name the songs and artists, or ignore the whole post. Pretty easy, no real purpose to it, but as I said, I’m bored and looking for distractions from the work I should be doing and this is the result.

Song 1:
Jenny said when she was just five years old
There was nothin’ happening at all
Every time she puts on a radio
There was a nothin' goin' down at all, not at all
Then one fine mornin' she puts on a New York station
You know, she couldn't believe what she heard at all
She started shakin' to that fine, fine music
You know her life was saved by rock 'n' roll

Song 2:
Jenny was sweet
She always smiled for the people she'd meet
On trouble and strife
She had another way of looking at life

Song 3:
Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to
You give me something
I can hold on to
I know you think I'm like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall
