"What fans heard in these four {Lyceum} shows was both a history of the Dead and a survey of their unique vision of American music, from folk to rock, with blues and R&B and country-and-western and Bakersfield all included, all melded together by the improvisational spirit of American jazz in a small-group format that owed much to European classical music.

The repertoire made a statement: this is who we are. And while that honored their roots and surveyed their history and evolution, the overwhelming focus was on the present. At the Lyceum, showgoers heard a tapestry of music that knit together the disparate strands of the ’60s psychedelic baroque of AOXOMOXOA and LIVE/DEAD with the Americana turn epitomized by WORKINGMAN’S DEAD and AMERICAN BEAUTY, which in many ways both continued and culminated in Skull and Roses. English fans were especially delighted to hear the new songs — for fans accustomed to bands using concerts to promote their records, that kind of generosity was striking. Those songs showed a band that was consolidating and deepening its distinctive approach to American vernacular music while still expanding the range of what that could include. Pigpen’s two originals added a distinctive flourish, but the new tunes also made it clear that Weir had emerged in his own right as a singer and songwriter, as well as showing that the wellsprings that fed Garcia and Hunter’s music were drawing on ever deeper aquifers." - Nicholas Meriwether

Imagine, if you will, being amongst the first to witness the merry band of misfits that had taken over the good ol' U.S. of A. conquer foreign lands. When the Grateful Dead first unleashed their magic on the cautiously optimistic patrons of Wembley of 4/7/72 and 4/8/72, it was with the idea they would have just these two nights to impress a traditionally reserved London crowd. It turned out to be a smashing success, and they set about locking in four dates at one of London’s most storied venues, the Lyceum Theatre, to wrap up what some consider one of the greatest tours in rock history.

On these four nights, we find the band hell-bent on telling 'em "how it's gonna be," and boy, did they ever. Powered by what Jerry called "peak optimism," they delivered a steady dose of "primal Dead," - sometimes searing, sometimes soulful, sometimes serious, but always unwavering in focus. This willful determination moved them through transitive takes on "Dark Star," to majestic heights with "The Other One," through marathon runs of "Playing," another minute, another mile. It found Phil, philosophizing on how to "put our music into a place," Bob and Jerry masterfully dueling as two of the top songwriters of their time, Bill elegantly ferrying songs to new lengths, and new members Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux adding organic warmth. And Pigpen? Well, he dotted his beloved classics - "Good Lovin'," "Mr. Charlie," "Lovelight," "Two Souls In Communion" - through set after set, conjuring up more clarity and charisma than anyone would have expected for his final few shows.

Due July 29th, LYCEUM 1972: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS marks the Dead’s largest vinyl boxed set of all time, a 24-LP collection featuring these storied final four nights in their entirety on 180-gram vinyl for the first time ever. Limited to just 4,000 copies, the individually-numbered set comes in a colorful slipcase with new artwork by Brian Blomerth. The four shows are organized in individual clamshell boxes, each one featuring the cover art that Scott McDougall created for each concert in EUROPE ’72: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS. The accompanying book includes a new in-depth look at the Lyceum shows by noted Dead scholar Nicholas Meriwether. And that all-important question of sound? Jeffrey Norman's luscious mixes are finally being heard in their full analog beauty. It all makes for a jolly good time, indeed!

Due to the size ( 17 ¼” x 15 ¾” x 7 3/8”)  and weight (28lbs) of this boxed set, shipping fees for this item will vary.

I see the stuff go by about shipping to UK and think,,,, fuck!

So yeah, I'd have to weight that shit in fer sure. It's like doordashing food, when the fee is more than the product, it's "are you kidding me" time.

Tickets thru that monopoly of a tickets seller and it's the same thing. "I'm sorry a handling fee for every emailed ticket??????"

I vote with my wallet. I see tixs go by for "the boys" and think, no! I'm not spending 500 bucks for one night's Entertaiment. (that would include, parking, tolls and dinner out,,,, I count that shit in with cost of show)

Same with those food delivery services, I CAN NOT believe how the kids I work with use them every night!!! 30 bucks for food!!! You spent a third of your nights pay on food?!?!

How's does fees work,,,, if the dead opened a "dead" store in london, there be no vat to someone in brighton?

Does the dead store pay a fee when they bring "product" into the UK? Is it less than you pay at home?

Trouble is, like was said on the other board - all the hidden costs. I'm not sure how much it would cost to ship to England, but I think the duty, tax, postage etc would bring the total up to between 800-900 bucks. It might be more than that - and USP aren't that easy to communicate from this side of the pond if they overcharge. I'm still tempted...it looks amazing - but it's a heck of a lot of money!

.... that these haven't sold out yet?

I would have thought anyone looking to score the complete E72 on vinyl would have jumped all over these. I mean limited to only 4,000 world wide! Practically the last 4 shows with Pig.

Yeah, pricey, but I would have thought there be 4,000 people with 600 bucks to piss away.

..... and yet the axes flew off the shelves!!

Interesting that in the sleeve notes of the album, Dave Lemieux says that if this show had been available in the tape trading days it would be as highly regarded as Fillmore East and Binghampton 1970, Fillmore 1971, Veneta 1972 etc. shows. Which I heartily agree. I also wonder if shows released in the Europe 72 trunk get lost in the pack a bit. There are so many great shows, one after the other that individual ones don't stand out to me quite so much. Unlike the ones Dave mentions-which have been released in 3- 4 disc sets with a spotlight on them

Really excited about this one... I find that as I'm getting older I am indeed a bit of a vinyl snob. With that said I am still far too young to have been on the bus to enjoy any of these moments in person while Jerry was still alive. This may be about as close as I can get to the fire. Love to you all, enjoy the boxset for those that snagged it!

Yes, this is a great release. I haven't compared it to the cd in the trunk, but I am well pleased with it. All the platitudes about the actual show are true - great in every department. One thing you don't hear very often is that possibly the best "Yellow Dog Story" was done at this show. I'm tempted to go for the Lyceum box now.

Incidentally, on the subject of vinyl the super dooper deluxe version of Goats Head Soup is now available at Amazon UK for about £44.00. Not bad value - and it sounds better than ever. The main selling point, though, is that it includes the "Brussels Affair".

I don't own the Wembley show on CD, so I can't make that comparison, but I can confirm that that RSD vinyl sounds amazing. Which is truly an achievement, given that the hall is supposedly an acoustic nightmare.(According to the Grateful Deadcast, the crew was up all night hanging army surplus parachutes from the rafters trying to improve the sound!) Audio is really good, and the performance is amazing, probably one of the 4-5 best of the whole tour, although again I do not own the suitcase and thus can't make comparisons.

Paul, really hope you share some stories from the Lyceum! As has been mentioned the Deadcast is looking for memories from people who went to those shows.

(But do people who went to those shows have memories? And if so, were they really there?) (Then again, nothing is really real, as far as I can tell.) (Or is it?) ( ... )

It would be great if 5/26/72 came out as a stand release on vinyl-though I don't suppose it will. Well...it might-but as a set pulled from the box and sold at an exorbitant price on ebay. And that's not what I mean at all.

If the Wembley show is any indication of what this box set will sound like, then it’s worth the price. The RSD release is just tremendous sound quality, so even though I own the CD Trunk, the upgrade in sound quality makes this a no brainer. If you’re on the fence I definitely think it’s time to jump.

This box looks cool and marketed for serious collectors. I was able to grab the original E72 steamer trunk CD box and enjoy every show in it. That too was a bigger ticket item, but for cost per show (or per disc) well worth it. It's cool that the single show CD release comes in a better digital. The sleeves in the original box weren't an ideal storage option, but to keep cost down I suppose that was fine.

I enjoy every show in the trunk box too - and I have played most of the shows every year since it came out 10 or 11 years ago. All Dead is in that box.
This vinyl box set isn't bad value either, I don't think. It's very expensive all in one go, but for each individual show - good value, considering what those shows are. I have no idea when it will arrive here in England, but one fine day in the next month or so there will be a knock on the door. I've already started clearing space for it.

Just saw the unboxing video on Twitter, not sure why they have not put it on the page, but it's getting me very excited!

No update on tracking on UPS so looks like it will arrive on the Days Between, but the new puppy arrives on Jerry's Birthday!

Just got mine! I’m in California. #3 of 4000.

That was probably the most exciting unboxing I’ve experienced! Absolutely beautiful. The book is amazing, great packaging, and the disks look great. Now, time to hunker down and spin some vinyl. Gonna start with the Dew from 5/23/72. One of my favorite Dews ever. Amazing Jerry tone and playing.

Glad people are actually getting something. I ordered the box and the dig files FLAC. No box or hopes of such and as a bonus the digital files Do Not Work! There is a coding error on the file downloads and I have been emailing them 3 times since yesterday at 6am east coast and I have not even had the courtesy of a return response.Nobody at "gnarlywood" Gives a Shi$ could not be more obvious. Dave's 43? who the hell knows I notice a seller on ebay had 14 of them for 59 bucks a pop? how does that work?

.....mine must be on it's way then ! Do we have to clean them, too?

False alarm - I've just checked my order and it says not shipped. Processing. Whenever you're ready!

Like others have commented there was no shipping notice. Got home from a wedding last night around 11pm and there is the box sitting on the porch. Beautiful package. I made it through 4 sides of the first show and the sound is top notch. This was a big ask at $600+ but now that its here it's just bliss in a box. If youre on the fence...get off buy it. Enjoy friends.

@boblopez -- Thanks for the advice about UPS but it can only work if Dead.net gives you a tracking number. My order still shows as 'not shipped' which is pretty irritating considering that I pre-ordered the day it was announced (April 8) so as not to give myself time to second-guess the decision.

I sure hope they are just being (typically) slow in updating their system and maybe it is actually on its way already. Again, why the 'mom and pop' vibe on this scale of operation?

i was surprised by a knock on the door this morning, and even more surprised to see a man from UPS standing there. With the Lyceum box at his feet. I was just about to scramble it inside when he told me that I would have to pay £93.17 for VAT and brokerage charges. He would only accept cash, and as I don't have that kind of money lying around - he took it away again! I phoned up a number on the invoice letter, paid by card, and it should be here tomorrow. Very fast indeed-on the page indicating it's status, it said that my order was still being posted and hadn't shipped just before the knock on the door.
This is England I'm talking about.

Days Between - I've just noticed you have to pay £102-11 for the delivery in Scotland. The breakdown of my charges is £81-67 Import VAT and £11.50 brokerage charges.

Dave

Import VAT £90.61
Brokerage £11.50

Think the difference is the exchange rate on the day you ordered.

So I had considered buying a couple extra Dave's Picks to flip to help pay for this monster box, and on the day I decided to do so, they sold out between browser refreshes. Feeling the sting of lost entrepreneurial activity, I ended up... buying a second Lyceum box, helped by a generous discount coupon from earlier in the year when Dead.net screwed up a different order. Also, having it sent to a different address than the first one because of the small issue of being out of the country right now (mentioned in a previous post). I'll keep one sealed and eventually sell it, probably whichever one has a higher number in the series.

So guess what now? The copy I ordered on release day, April 7, still has not shipped -- but the one I bought less than 2 weeks ago, that one has.. Anyway, at least I should expect to get ONE of them soon. Also I guess I should be glad I got emails that they were shipped, because lots of people did not. All of which is crazy stuff for a pricey box like this.

Well, it was delivered today and very impressive it looks too. Packed to withstand nuclear war, it took me a fair while to get in there. In fact I'm just having a breather now before I dive in. I'm very impressed with how quickly this was sent out - released on Friday, arriving at my house in England on Tuesday - Monday if I'd had the cash.

Days - that makes sense.

Just wanna say if you’re out here scooping up copious amounts of limited releases with the sole purpose of preventing others from having an opportunity to purchase, then selling them for mark ups, you’re just an asshole. Terrible look to come here advertising that.

I just got mine 10 minutes ago. Happy dance. Arrived safely and I opened it immediately. Excellent packaging kept everything safe from damage. Going to love listening to these shows on vinyl as that’s my favorite thing and helps to take me back to that feeling I got every time since I heard that first note live in 1976. My first show was Capital Center in Largo, Md in 1976 and these shows are part of the Europe ’72 album that set the stage and started my long strange trip when I first heard the music that became so important to me for the last 45 years.

Like many others, I was a bit frustrated by the transparency (or lack there of) regarding a $600 box set that offered little to no updates to many of us who forked out big bucks 4 months ago. And getting the "this item is going fast" notification emails for the box set, rather then getting "your item is shipping soon" emails was a bit off putting. But miraculously the massive box got dropped off by UPS today!! I have not yet opened it, but I thought this might give hope to many others who are in the same boat as me, which is your order still says "processing". Mine still says processing but was delivered today, so hopefully yours is on it's way too!

To echo chrisbllngs and others here: My original order (from April 7) got dropped off today. Cherry on top is that I got a "Your order has shipped!" email about it two hours after it had been delivered. I was not there to receive it (had it sent to family to hold on to until I am back), but by all accounts it was shipped in a nice strong box and had no damage. But yes, unnecessary anxiety for a purchase of this scale...

Dennis

Her name is Cara and she is one of my three Westie's who are my surrogate children since the real ones left home many moons ago.

I think this is now my favourite box set edging out Europe 72 steamer trunk & 30 trips. The vinyl sounds perfect.

UPS indicated it was to arrive on Saturday, received shipping info from dead.net yesterday letting me know that yesterday was the day. Got it off my stoop 10 minutes after UPS dropped it off. Box very warm with slight corner drop on outer box but that awesome foam kept the inner box intact and undamaged. Have not broken seal on it yet, we got a new puppy for Jerry's Birthday.

Is the number located in the book? Not that it matters once you break the seal. My DaP43 is one of the higher numbers I got (18662), but sounds as sweet as #1.

It's on the box that holds the 4 shows and book.

I know the number only tells what number the box is and not what the lp number was,,, but yeah a low number is cool.

Question,,, having trouble finding. How many of the Europe shows have been released on vinyl now? I thought 7 but only finding 6 on the shelf. Wembly, Olympia and the 4 Lyceum,,,, others?

I assume all 22 shows will make the cut someday, right? :-)

I regret missing out on the Europe 72 Volume 2 set that came out on vinyl a few years ago. Mainly because it's got the Dark Star-Drums-Other One jam from Bickershaw on it. Hopefully, though, Bickershaw ( among others) will come out in it's entirety on vinyl soon. As they seem to be focussing on The English dates, maybe this will be the next one to come out-it would make a great RSD release.

Mrmojo - amen to that ! I can go days without seeing anyone, but sods law I seem to be expected here there and everywhere all of a sudden. Out all day today, and out all day tomorrow. A bit of peace and The Dead - is that too much to ask for ?

The only other Europe '72 vinyls that I know about are from RSD 2021 and this year's RSD Drop. That would be the L'Olympia, Paris 5/3/72 6-LP and Wembley Empire Pool, London 4/8/72 5-LP sets. With this year's version of Boxzilla, that would make 6 of 22 complete shows released as vinyl boxes. The 2012 single LP release was somewhat before I got on the bus, which didn't occur until mid-December 2014.

With many thanks especially to Daverock's very persuasive posts, especially your famous one going back to June 25th, I finally went ahead and ordered one of these 24-LP behemoths on Sunday whilst there are sets still available. UPS is tracking my order, said to be on its way in Riverside, CA, last evening, with an estimated delivery date of Monday, 8/8, by 7:00 pm. Just yesterday, a poster on another forum reported having received their copy #3759, and the day before, on Sunday, #3634 was reportedly with another Head since Saturday, the 30th. So that suggests to me that if they are taking orders and/or going out in numerical order, then there must be something less than 200 units left by this point.

Daverock - Just seeing your latest post from a few minutes ago before hitting Save. I agree with you and Dennis, hopefully all of the remaining shows will be out on vinyl in the fullness of time.

In April I picked up the Wembley Empire Pool set and enjoyed spinning the discs so much, I headed over to eBay to find the prior Olympia, Paris release (with only a not unreasonable price increase). At the moment though, I'm still passing on this Lyceum. Mainly because of my banking on more of the E'72 shows coming down the pipe. I recall from something that I read/heard that Latvala always thought the Amsterdam and and Rotterdam shows would make a great mini box set. I'd hit the purchase button instinctively if that ever happened. For those that have this whopper landing on the doorstep, enjoy and trust that I'm a wee bit jealous!

On a technical note, I'm glad to see that the Lyceum packaging has the softer, paper sleeves rather than the harsher card sleeves used for Olympia and Wembley. Great to have the imprinted artwork but they left some paper shards that demanded cleaning prior to listening. Wembley cleared up fine, on account of the pressings still being new I presume. But Olympia, from the shards sitting on the grooves for an extended period, had some minor damage. And to now finally get to my point, hey Rhino, any reason for not following best practices and use plastic sleeves for our precious GD? Better yet, the paper sleeves lined with plastic?

Greetings! I received this wonderful set on 8/1…a bit of serendipity in that, I think. It’s put together beautifully and the sound is superb. Well worth the wait!

I do have one issue. Side 5 of the 5/23/72 show has a large number of skips in the record - Sitting on Top of the World, Rockin
Pneumonia and Boogie Woogie Flu, Mexicali Blues, and Good Lovin. This is a real bummer, man.

I’ve listened to most of 5/24/72 and no other issues - so far.

***ok…well, I didn’t have this issue with either the Paris show or Wembley…but, I think a little cleaning did the trick and all is well. Thank all of the gods!

I’m finishing up listening to the last of this behemoth box set, and all I can say is “Thank You” to everyone who had a hand in creating this incredible set of vinyl. For the last two days I have been immersed in these four shows, and each and every side has been breathtaking. Not a single issue to report except brilliant sound quality and mastering. These pressings are some of the cleanest I’ve ever heard. To be completely honest there were two extremely insignificant pops over 46 sides, and that is impressive to say the least.

Between the packaging, artwork, and text included in the wonderful booklet, this set stands head and shoulders above any deluxe vinyl edition I’ve ever purchased (along with the Vinyl Me Please set, which is also incredible).

These performances are some of the best moments in Grateful Dead history, and they are presented here in the highest quality possible. If for any reason you haven’t grabbed one of these sets, I implore you to jump before they’re gone. Seriously, this set will blow your mind…. Guaranteed!!!

I would agree with Twoswans - this is an immaculate collection. I am taking it slow and steady...so far I am half way through 5/24/72. Every side has played beautifully - music, sound quality, songs... perfect. My neighbour is off on holiday on Wednesday - so then I am going to go all out.

@daverock - If you think you're going to want this box, I really wouldn't wait. It's taking far longer to sell out than I imagined it would, but then again, the price tag is high. That said, it's only a run of 4,000 and would be surprised if it remains available much longer. Then again, no one has a crystal ball. I also don't know your system. In my particular system, vinyl just sounds so much better, so it's a no brainer for me, despite having the discs. If I eventually can afford a superior digital front end, my personal preference may change, though doubt it since that front end will come in a preamp I'm considering and that has a superior analogue front end too. LOL But just saying, if anyone who buys this set has regrets soon, or later, I tend to doubt re-selling them is going to be very difficult. Just my 2-cents. Cheers

I ordered the bozo or bolo vinyl and got that in June but at the same time ordered the 24 LP box set, Europe 72 on 2 cd and 3 LP and the 4 CD Lyceum. I haven't received them, sent a comment in to the website last week to see if they had shipped and no response. I've been buying everything that comes out for years now and only lost one DP in the mail, no biggie, 40 bucks replaced that but this is quite a bit different. Anyone here know how to contact customer support by phone? I'm beginning to get worried, my completist tendencies are being stretched. Thanks for any help and We Miss You Jerry !!!!!!!!

I too am waiting patiently, not wanting this $550 box set sitting on my porch when I'm not home, as some commenters are saying no shipping notice was given ahead of time. Since I ordered this 24LP set on April 9th, I was hoping it would have shipped by now. Is there anybody out there?

I PM Marye, maybe she can help. Any UPS truck that goes by my hopes go up but so far have been dashed as they don't stop. Must be a glitch or something because all the years I've ordered anything through dead.net I've got an e-mail saying it is on its way. To be 11 days after the release date and not received one makes me nervous.

Makes no difference to me either way - I read the posts and made my own mind up.

Sorry to read some haven't received it yet - and odd - I live in a remote part of England and it showed up here 3 days after release date. As opposed to Dave's 43, which hasn't appeared yet. I'm not worried about that one yet - they often arrive just at the moment I think they aren't going too. The Box is a different matter.

Hey @OUS, most of us are adults and we assume everyone is going to make up their own mind and only use this forum to see how others feel. This forum is for sharing our thoughts. "If" vinyl is your thing, for me it happens to sound better in my particular system, or you have other reasons like not having these shows, I'm just sharing that this box set is incredible. Mastering, sonics and pressing are the new platinum standard IMHO.

Some sad person below named OUS made a post with the title "Tell us you work for dead.net without telling us you work for dead . net" and quoted my review. I'm sorry you are so troubled you have to try to pick fights on a message board, much less a grateful dead message board. I don't work for dead .net. I'm just a fan that was seeing shows since April 71' and so over the top excited by this box set, would be remiss to not share it. Please get some help and Good luck.

Not surprisingly, David Lemieux has produced an amazing 24 LP Lyceum '72 box set. First of all, the outer shipping package is substantial and brilliantly conceived – if you get one of these, take your time opening the package so you can savor all its cool detailing. The box set is comes cocooned in 1-1/2" of closed-cell, hi-density foam. When you get to the box set inside, you'll find a creative blend of Scott McDougall's familiar, original art with sparkling new designs by Brian Blomerth. Each LP is in an audiophile quality, plastic-lined paper sleeve. Originally recorded by Betty Cantor and company, mixed by Jeffrey Norman, and mastered by David Glasser, these shows from the Lyceum in 1972 never sounded warmer or fuller – you can lose yourself climbing around through incredible, lush soundscapes now captured and enhanced in vinyl by Chris Bellman. Plus there's the fascinating LP-sized hardback book that includes Nick Meriwether's commentary on the shows and Europe '72 tour, along with the entire, rare "Book of the Dead" that was handed out during the first Lyceum show on 5/23, and lots of great photos and other cool stuff.

Sorry for gushing, but I couldn't help myself. I swear I don't work for deaddotnet, but wanted to make sure anybody on the fence hears from one more face-melted deadhead who's now happily lost in this box. 4 down, and 16 to go. . . Onward.
