We know where you've been and we're taking you back with the twice as nice DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 45: PARAMOUNT THEATRE, PORTLAND, OR - 10/1/77 & 10/2/77. Back-to-back complete previously unreleased shows on 4CDs? You betcha! Why? Because we couldn't pick one over the other of these two nights that have been described as "fire," "mind-frying," and "crispy" (bit of a theme here) too many times to count. Witness it for yourself when you dig into the inventive medleys and pristine sound, not to mention the first "Dupree's Diamond Blues" since '69 and the first live "Casey Jones" since '74.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson (with a boost from Bob Menke, more about that in David's video) and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Grab a copy while you can.

I currently have no plans for the DaP 23 1/22/78 vinyl. It's a good show, raging Jack Straw and somehow Row Jimmy rocks more than usual, and that's one side itself. 16 seconds of Close Encounters Theme is a bit more than the Stayin' Alive tease a few months later that led to DaP 7 4/24/78, but much ado about very little, to me. There are probably 20 DaPs I would've picked for vinyl release over this one. It is kind of funny, the two with space-themed movie cover art kick off the series, but I thought the DaP 1 choice was perfect, mainly because that was a much cheaper way for some of us to get a physical copy of that one than ebay.

I am more tempted by doubling up with Dicks Picks on vinyl than Daves. I always think that because the Dicks were released on cd so long ago, the chances are that newer vinyl editions will have an improved sound quality that might not be as noticeable on Dave's vinyl.
Having said that, I never check it out. And I only have a few Dicks on vinyl because they aren't on general release in England and are often prohibitively expensive. I have Dicks 8 -5/2/70 on vinyl and that is amazing. Dicks 26, excerpts from 2 shows in April 1969 is a good, too, although much less played. I have been looking at Dicks 19 just this morning - and the two October 1976 shows from Days On The Green. But we are talking hundreds of pounds for a show I already have. RSD shows are more affordable.

I generally like vinyl more. Maybe it's my age. I don't mind the side changing - if anything it helps me to focus on what I'm listening to more -I'll maybe just play 2 sides at a time. Later in the day - in the early hours of the morning - when I am drifting in and out of sleep - I play cds - but that is much less focussed listening. More like spacy background music.

Re: Groove Is in the Heart

Nice fun fact about that song, the bass line, played by Bootsy is a whole step down (making it sound slower) from the original Bring Down the Birds, played by bassist extraordinaire, Ron Carter. It was a song by Herbie Hancock on the Blow Up soundtrack in 1966. Very influential British film and soundtrack, which also featured the Yardbirds in the Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page era with them appearing in a scene playing Stroll On. It wasn't released in the US until 1968 and its scandalous sex scenes led to the introduction of the rating system.

The 5/7/77 RSD release was inevitable, hope the 3/2/69 is not too far behind. But it will be nice having those 3 shows on vinyl. Cornell sounded great on vinyl. Now I'll have Wharf Rat and Terrapin, and that great Peggy-O. Speaking of '77, finally finished DaP 45, and it's a good one, definitely drum heavy as noted, and more disappointingly, other things would seem to drop, mainly Bob's guitar and vocals. Oh, and may have missed it, but didn't see anybody noting the Lazy Lightning Jam in Let It Grow. It pops up twice. Supplication Jams seem more common, never heard that I recall a Lazy Lightning Jam, it took me a bit to register whatbit was, because it made me think it was related to the "Listen to the Thunder shout 'I am!'" part. Really liked the classical sounding figure Jerry did at the end of the Scarlet Begonias, he plays a theme, then a variation on it, then another sort of progressing ahead before they drop into Fire On the Mountain. Wharf Rat was excellent, sounded like significant tape degradation/warble at the end though. Oh, and Phil's intro for Samson & Delilah is great. I think it was DaP 25 11/6/77 where Weir introduces is with, "This being a Sunday, we're gonna do a song of spiritual derivation." This intro is even better, almost as wacky as the Jones Gang on Dap 12 11/4/77, though the king has to be DaP 27 9/2/83 with the citizens of Boise being asked to submit to being a conquered people by our beloved bespectacled bassman. But to DaP 45, a good selection. One I'll note has no thanks to ABCD Enterprises, so a couple of Betty Boards that have been there all along. Think that's the first such Betty since July '78 started the deal in 2016. And instead of being done with '77 for a while, I queued up 4/25/77 next. With the drop in Dead vinyl, I may be able to get that one for a reasonable price. I once almost had one on ebay for $150, but lost it to an auto bid. So, that will have been a few weeks in 1972 and 1977, think I'll throw caution to the wind and go for 1974 for my next excursion. After all, a whole bunch of 1973 is headed our way this year, methinks.

Edited to add: to Crow Told Me, I get your point on the double dipping, but it does genuinely seem to have a different feel to me, if it does come with the frustration of flipping it every 20 min. But it's worth it for some recordings. 5/3/72 sounded so good, I played the whole damn thing in one sitting after planning to sample a couple of songs that day it came out. I hope that doesn't put in any crack's in Pandora's Box for you, but I don't discount the vinyl warmth as a myth as easily, because I can hear it. If you can't that may excellent news for your wallet. :)

I screwed up, thinking about Umphreys McGee got me thinking about the Humpty Dance. You got that right. But the song, I didnt. I was speaking of Bootsy Collins, of Parliament Funkadelic and before that James Brown. An incredible bass talent. The song I got confused was "Groove Is in the Heart" by Dee Light. Got those confused as they were both on MTV around the same time...I got a little lost. Sorry. Although, it is interesting, as I also saw Larry Graham when he played bass for Prince in 1998. What an incredible show indeed, and I am not a huge Prince fan. But those two together were quite funky. One reason I love a great funky Shakedown, although most of the funk come from Jerry instead of the bottom.

    Oh well, oooopss.

There's a rule I try to follow when it comes to vinyl purchases: no double dipping. If I already have the music on CD, and the seedies sound good, I try to resist the temptation to buy the vinyl reissue. Hence I have no plans to get the vinyl versions of DaP 23 or Boston '77.

Just to state the obvious: the audio isn't going to sound better on your home system just because it's vinyl. It might, or it might not, depending on the quality of your turntable vs the quality of your CD player, the quality of your phono preamp, quality of the vinyl, blah blah blahbitty blah. All things being equal, if it's the same mix from the same source, and your turntable and CD player are roughly equivalent quality, it's going to sound the same, trust me.

Or at least that's what I tell myself, as I try to keep Pandora in her box.

Random GD -related thingy: I was playing a bunch of Brad Mehldau videos on Youtube last night, checking out his new album, which is all Beatles tunes. (Do yourself a favor and consume the video of him playing I am the Walrus: it's fucking genius.) After a while I switched to a live performance where Mehldau is playing at a festival in France. After the first two songs (a nice version of Bittersweet Symphony that segued into (I shit you not) Smells Like Teen Spirit) he removes his sport coat, and underneath is ... a Grateful Dead t-shirt! Aw, Brad, I knew you was one of us.

Did disc 1 on the smaller system yesterday and was very pleased.
Disc 2 on the big system today and I cannot seem to turn down the kick drum.
Need an EQ to just turn that part down. Got the bass turned down to about 9 o'clock. Losing Phil just to get away from that drum. I'm used to this, from even way back in the DiPs when Mickey was involved in the remastering/mixing, but this is way too much. It would sound great in a disco or rave but seems quite out of balance with the rest of the sound in my living room setting. I think I'll just turn it up more and scare the cats. What the hell, the lady next door is pretty deaf anyway so why not. Simple solution to my first world problem.
Cheers

Phish also announced their summer tour today. The Midwest and NE getting the shaft. Again. Fingers crossed they play the Sphere here on Halloween, although I am seeing them at the Hollywood Bowl in April. Apologies if I already posted that prior.

This is what Jack Hardy says about "I Ought to Know"

I ought to know more than I know
I ought to know where this road goes
I ought to know great literature by heart
The history of art
This I ought to know

I ought to know more than 1492
I ought to know what the Buffalo Bills do
I ought to know more than the quarterback's wounded knee
What happened at Sand Creek
This I ought to know
But I don't

I ought to know about the sacrifices made
I ought to know ration stamps, air raids
I ought to know more than George C. Scott
And John Wayne get shot
This I ought to know

I ought to know what the drinking gourd means
I ought to know more than "I have a dream"
I ought to know about the back of the bus
And the crack of billy clubs
This I ought to know
But I don't

(chorus:)
I don't know nothing about nothing
But I'm proud to stand upright
I don't know nothing about nothing
But my future looks so bright
Illumined by the light
Laugh-tracks, soundbites
And a replay to get it right
I ought to know

I ought to know the songs of Joe Hill
I ought to know Trotsky, Marx and Hagel
I ought to know about the Haymarket hangings
And the H.U.A.C
This I ought to know

I ought to know about Oliver Cromwell
I ought to know about the Gnostics and St. Paul
I ought to know what Jesus really said
And who the preacher takes to bed
This I ought to know
But I don't

I ought to know what's buried in the landfill
I ought to know about the clear-cutting bills
I ought to know about pipelines and schemes
What extinction really means
This I ought to know

I ought to know for whom the bell tolls
I ought to know the pride and prejudice of polls
I ought to know if the grapes of wrath are union
Picked by Victor Jara's hands
This I ought to know
But I don't

....... probably a lot we all should know :-)

Something about a 12-piece band fronted by the Slide Man and Herself Susan putting out the big sound on groovy R&B, space jams and little combos within the 12 players and her voice and his voice that gets me every time. And it's so cool to have been fans of each of them before they joined forces that makes it all even better.

OK DEEDEE, Since you know tell us whether the release is awesome or not rather than railing at other comments.
For what it’s worth ( a good song IMO) I think the release is better than average and I was surprised at how good the two aud tracks sound. I think the second show is marginally better than the first but both are enjoyable.

Reading everyone’s requests for possible releases I can only quote Sir Henry at Rawlinson’s End, “I don’t know what I want, but I want it now”. I look forward to whatever comes my way although I’d prefer it wasn’t an ultra matrix recording. The mixed in audience sounds don’t sound right to me, but each to their own.

The only thing with talking about American politics on here is that if you don't live in America, the chances are you won't know what people are talking about. Unless it relates to a major world event, or is something that can be seen in broader context than just the U.S. Not that it bothers me - there aren't that many anyway.

hey Deedee, I come to this site every day, to read and mostly enjoy the, as you call it, ludicrous posts on this site. I haven't seen any "liberal whining" that you speak of. Now I might have missed it so could you point them out to me? Now I know somedays things can be tough and one might feel the need to come on a groovy site and crap all over it, but really, this is not the place for such foolishness.
As far as liberal whining, well it surely isn't as bad as trying to install an illegitimate fake king, is it? Or trying to take senior citizens life blood away ie SS or...I could go on but hopefully, you get my drift. All that is left to say is, hey dude, you're not part of the sideshow here, are you?
I have read and read these pages and nowhere did I see anyone blaming someone else for ignorance or the world's problems. Unless it was supposed to be taken as a joke. Check sense of humor, I know it's difficult sometimes but life it seems is easier with a smile on your face.
As far as you oughta know if Dave's is good or awesome, why start a row, gee, follow your own recommendations and read a book or go to the library and check it out and listen to it. Music is very subjective and therefore what some think is awesome may be not to your liking and vice versa.
Rubbish? One man gathers what another man spills. All are included here. even you.
political rant over, as you were.

I second Billy The Kidd’d’s excellent suggestion to release a comprehensive list of all the Crown Jewels in the vault, including those Bear Banana boxes. It would be amazing to know what tapes are in storage, waiting to see the light of day.
Perhaps Dave needs an intern or two to help put the list together, and I’m thinking there would literally be thousands of volunteers on this site alone! If the TicketBastard fiasco with Taylor Swift ticket sales was bad, wait until Dave posts that he needs a “couple of helping hands”!!! ;)
Great idea, Billy!

I check in this site on a somewhat regular basis and I often notice snide political comments being made without repercussion or comment...unless the comment is not leaning left at which point the pile on begins. Take a look and you may find that there are a number of political comments criticizing those who the left disagrees with, often labelled as someone's political post for the month, and notice the lack of any outcry to keep politics off the site in response to those posts. I stopped coming here as regularly in the spring of 2020, when this site pretty much turned into a political message board intolerant of anything other than unquestioning support for Joe Biden and the agenda of the left. Questioning whether all of the random destruction and rioting after the George Floyd murder was an appropriate response was heresy. Pointing out the unassailable fact that Joe Biden was the primary author of the federal laws escalating and militarizing the drug war during his decades as head of the Senate Judiciary Committe responsible for the drafting of federal criminal law was blasphemy and resulted in demands to keep your political thoughts to yourself. If you don't want politics on the site, don't make political posts. If you do make political posts, realize, someone is going to disagree and may want to respond. And if you plan to respond with a viewpoint to the right of center, prepare to be piled on.

And RIP Raquel.

I keep getting drawn back to two excellent live Can cds this week, both From 1975 - "Live In Brighton" and "Live In Stuttgart". Both doubles, every minute filled with exploratory improvisational rock. Although nothing else I have heard in rock music sounds like it. The Dead are name checked in the sleeve notes to the Brighton set, with Can's wall of sound amp lay out apparently influenced by pictures of The Dead's set up. Their pre concert music ritual ensured they were up and flying from the moment they took to the stage to the moment they left it.

I can remember the response to George Floyd's death here in England -which denied discussion in a way. Some people I knew were dropping on to one knee so fast you would have thought they'd been shot.

Normally business is not something I want to discuss here, but I also wanted to thank David Zaslav the CEO of Warner Discovery. I had wondered if he would sell off the Warner Music Division, but instead, he has strengthened it. I received my copy a couple of days before official release date and the packaging with one exception appears better produced, etc.

So thanks to both Dave's, and of course all of the other contributors to the Dave's Pick Series. Nice Job!!!

I always ask that politics and religion not be discussed here. I have opinions on both, but try not to discuss or respond to others posts. For me, this is Grateful Dead Headquarters and all I want out of it is Grateful Dead stories. I have been a head almost 40 years, and yet, I know I still have a lot to learn. Just their 30 year life, and the millions they touched, should be enough to keep the discussion going for a long time. I prefer Dead show discussions and then any other music discussion, like see below.

Dave Rock, a few weeks back I mentioned not being able to get some brain cells to pull back memories. It was about the death of Crosby and also Jeff Beck. The Crosby story, from what I remember, concerns Crosby opening for Grateful Dead on 12/31/86. I think it was Crosby, then Neville Brothers then at 10 -10:15 Grateful Dead first set. Crosby talked about being in prison, so I had to go back and do some research. I thought he said, "I was in a Mexican Prison, and believe me (a warning!!!) you definitely dont want to go there". When I did my research, he was in a Texas prison on bunk charges from years before he turned himself into authorities. Now Texan and Mexican can be confused but did he say "I was in a Texas prison and it was no better than a Mexican prison." Not sure, as again I had the Big Head. Regardless, he was just warning the audience to be careful as times had not gotten better for the party people, it may have gotten worse. Which I think it was worse in the mid 80's then at the beginning of this psychedelic adventure. Like I posted about some Ventura shows, it was a laid back time, the DEA had not begun its infiltration or as I call it the deepening of the Federal Government's illegal war on American Citizens. (OK some politics). But now, we see renewed strength in scientific breakthroughs concerning Psychedelics being very positive in helping those suffering from severe trauma.

And to the Feds, you have already legalized Marijuana as you made CBD legal nationally, which of course, is from the male plant. But you cant have a male without a female. Hopefully, my last political thought here, everyone in Washington D.C. is most absolutely the deepest of SCUM!

OK I apologize for that one, but only because I made a political statement.

OK, now back to my mantra.

More 1977 ...but nevertheless, while I have come to think 5/8/77 may be overrated, 5/7/77 now seems very underrated. And as RSD releases can be bought in the UK ...I think I'll be stepping out for this one.

Talk to me baby... everyone doing the hump, the humpty humpty.

Name the famous bass player on that one?

And Umphrey's is indeed a great band. After I got off the bus, from seeing GD shows, I did a lot of jam band exploration starting in the early 1990's and going through about 2005, when Katrina hit New Orleans. The last time I saw Umphrey's McGee was Jazz Fest at night 2003 at the State Palace Theater. It was Umphrey's McGee opening for Moe. It was a great show. I saw Moe with Medeski Martin and Wood in 2002, I think, maybe earlier. The night after Umpff at the State Street Theater, on Saturday, I went to Gov't Mule at the Saenger Theater where they filmed "The Deepest End, record, cd, dvd. I always recommend both the CD and the DVD, as the cd has songs the dvd doesnt and vice versa. Warren Haynes and Mule put on one of the best concerts I ever saw. Show started around 7pm and let out around 3am. If you havent seen I recommend highly. Just double checked on ebay and the 2cd set with the dvd is available brand new. I bought them separate, I am assuming they have re-issued as for years you couldnt find the dvd at all. (Edit, looks like import so watch the dvd region as i did not check that out.)

Saw a bunc of crazy stuff that weekend. East Coast West Coast Jazz Allstars at Howlin Wolf's, Buckethead, and as written before, The Funky Meters which show started at midnight Sunday-Monday.

Have not been back to New Orleans since Katrina...I am to old for some of this sh1t. Just read, the State Palace has not been renovated since Katrina which is sad as it is almost 100 years old.

It is worth a look to see pictures of both of these wonderful Palaces...makes me think of the old Kaiser Auditorium, many of the same issues, everyone wants renovation, but it is always very expensive.

And ummm, the aforementioned bass player I saw in 1977 or1978 with Parliament Funkadelic. The Mothership Connection! Absolutely Wild as the ship landed.

Oh yeah, and Ellis D. Trails - so nice!

Might take a while longer; seeing brand new copies selling or having been sold well below cost, some with free shipping. Similar prices for #44.
Wouldn't be surprised if they go from 25,000 to 22,000 next year
