We know where you've been and we're taking you back with the twice as nice DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 45: PARAMOUNT THEATRE, PORTLAND, OR - 10/1/77 & 10/2/77. Back-to-back complete previously unreleased shows on 4CDs? You betcha! Why? Because we couldn't pick one over the other of these two nights that have been described as "fire," "mind-frying," and "crispy" (bit of a theme here) too many times to count. Witness it for yourself when you dig into the inventive medleys and pristine sound, not to mention the first "Dupree's Diamond Blues" since '69 and the first live "Casey Jones" since '74.

In the late 90s Pete Rowan was the featured musician on a multi-day float trip with the local river company on the mighty San Juan River. Folks brought their instruments and there was jamming around the campfire every night. After the trip he graciously played a free show in the tiny Nadabar for us folks in town. At one point he started talking about Muley Point, which has one of the most iconic and spectacular views in the southwest, looking south from atop the edge of Cedar Mesa across the Goosenecks of the San Juan to the Navajo Nation including Douglas Mesa, Monument Valley, and beyond. And he finishes with something to the effect that "I wrote this song while I was camped up on Muley Point years ago." And then he played Land of the Navajo.

Midnight Moonlight holds a special place for me in those Old and in the Way songs. Listening to some of that Boarding House music right now. Nice unexpected music detour for a gray afternoon.

Anyone have any books by Ray Robertson? Which ones should I read, please?

Opera is fine by me, but it has to be live. My wife humors me by coming along, but I'm the one who listens to classical music all day (with breaks for GD, Dylan, and Jazz).

Sluggish sales? Let's be honest--we have TONS of GD already, so it does become difficult to get too wound up over new releases, unless the release is from a lightly-mined era, or is from recently-recovered tapes of a true classic show. Some of these recent boxed sets might have been better off with just a couple of the gem shows being Dave's Picks instead?

And yes, if I watch sports (which is mostly soccer), I mute the announcers. It's always fun when the music I'm playing suddenly synchronizes with the on-field action!

    Be kind, rewind.

p.s. DMCVT, I LOVE that! :) Just took the entire family to Carmen last spring. I've seen it two or three times now . . .

53 years ago today, the Grateful Dead were busted down in New Orleans, down on Bourbon Street. They wouldn't play in New Orleans until 1980, when they played a couple of acoustic/electric shows, that would make a nice release.

    Change in IRS Reporting Requirements

Yes, interesting to hear all the theories.
However, there wasn't a change in eBay reporting. The change was at the Federal level and was included in The American Rescue Plan.
All payment platforms, which include eBay, PayPal, Venmo, etc. are required to report to the IRS and the account holder all payments over $600 for the year. The old threshold was $20,000. This is a huge change. It means if you sell your daughter's bike on Craigslist and you get paid through PayPal and it is over $600, it will be reported to the IRS. It would also include your buddies paying you for dinners or drinks through Venmo if it exceeds that $600 for the enter year. This has caused a huge disruption with these platforms, including Ebay. It was such a big issue, the IRS decided not to enforce it for 2022, but warned everyone would have to comply in 2023.

Okay, I am sure this is really boring, but sure it impacts all types of sales, including Ebay.

We will have to wait and when #45 eventually sells out. I see the LTTR and the MSG box sets are both still for sale.

Hope you all receive your #45 soon.

    Not Sold Out Yet

Interesting to read the different views on the failure to sell out, I do hope it is down to fatigue, either of the 70's generally, or 77 specifically. That said, I do fear PT Barnum maybe nearer the mark and always wondered if the increase to 25k was, perhaps, a step too far.

What is clear is that whole model is based on each volume selling out. Not necessarily immediately, but reasonably promptly. As soon as volumes stop selling out we descend into the vicious spiral of cherry picking increasing while subscriptions fall. Cherry picking is fine in theory, why shouldn't people only buy the volumes they want? Because it means fewer units sold and consequently the model becoming unsustainable without reducing the numbers.

I'm not familiar with the new ebay restrictions mentioned, but I've always found it a little ironic that the resellers have always taken quite a bit of stick here, when the reality is that reselling has been absolutely critical to the success of Dave's Picks, building demand and driving numbers up and making it what it is to day. It's worth remembering that each Dave's Picks now sells about four times what the Road Trips releases used to sell and about half of those were full shows.

On a more optimistic not, didn't volume 41 take a while to sell out?

Assessing sales and what it means is always tricky.
Hobo Song and Land of the Navaho always get me.
So The Who pulled it off with Tommy, why not? I could see some story pulled from the ballads and expanded into an opera. So many, Jack Straw comes to mind in a dust bowl hobo storyline. Or Terrapin with the Lady & The Fan story.
The GD Movie's first few minutes of animation work for me as almost a visual opera but I'm a cartoon child and all the classical music I know is from the Loony Tunes cartoons. And all my knowledge of ancient history comes from Fractured Fairy Tales with the voice of Edward Everett Horton.
    Cheers
That New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival line-up is humongus (or is that humungus?)!

It may be better that they take a while to sell out, so non subscribers ( mentioning no names) can pick up a copy. It would be more worrying if they sold out on day one, before everybody that wants a copy can get one. That would light up the board, if that happened ! But all the Dave's Picks have sold out reasonably quickly, which is the main thing. So maybe they have got it right after all.
It wouldn't do any harm to move out of the 70's, though. My preference would be to go back to the 1960's, but there are surely others would be just as keen for the series to move on into the 80's and 90's. I personally might not buy them, but I am sure there are many that would.

The Dead might not have played opera, but they look as if they going out to hear one on the cover of "Go To Heaven."

If only the GD would have done an opera! (kidding). I have seen a few and get them although they are not usually my thing. I had a colleague who's side hustle was support and production of Operas, he took us to see one of Mozart's Magic Flute once, a project he helped see through. It was fun enough.

My favorite opera moment has to be Tim Robbins playing \Mozart, the Marriage of Figaro over the PA in the Shawshank Redemption. A pretty powerful moment in that film and a testament that Music can heal. For me, a great song to pull me through tough times is The Hobo Song. An up-tempo bluegrass song, the words, however, speak of deep despair.

I guess I am in the minority, I don't blame EBay taxes for Dave's 45 still being available. For some reason, the Fall '77 shows seem to be less desirable than Spring and Summer. I think the perceived drop in demand has more to do with an impending recession and resulting less disposable income for many, but the real reason is the 25,000 subscription number. Remember.. the first year the subscription was capped at 12,000 copies. Even us diehards openly discuss not needing every single release. As much as I love 1977 GD, I have listened to it a ton.

It is going to be hard for Rhino and the GD to keep the hype going at 25k copies. Treading carefully as they must, the greatest hype period was probably in 2015 with Fare The Well, etc.

One last comment, the first release each year always takes longer to sell out. Not sure exactly why.. perhaps it's because each year attracts a churn of new Deadheads that got on the bus late and buy a few ala carte CDs while the people that drop off the wheel and quit subscribing affect subscription numbers, which they can control somewhat and the impact is largely hidden to us.

I don't think it's primarily an EBay phenomenon, but I could be wrong.

Did disc 1 on the smaller system yesterday and was very pleased.
Disc 2 on the big system today and I cannot seem to turn down the kick drum.
Need an EQ to just turn that part down. Got the bass turned down to about 9 o'clock. Losing Phil just to get away from that drum. I'm used to this, from even way back in the DiPs when Mickey was involved in the remastering/mixing, but this is way too much. It would sound great in a disco or rave but seems quite out of balance with the rest of the sound in my living room setting. I think I'll just turn it up more and scare the cats. What the hell, the lady next door is pretty deaf anyway so why not. Simple solution to my first world problem.
Cheers

Phish also announced their summer tour today. The Midwest and NE getting the shaft. Again. Fingers crossed they play the Sphere here on Halloween, although I am seeing them at the Hollywood Bowl in April. Apologies if I already posted that prior.

And I didn't nail anything re my babysitter. Shame on you ;)
But she dressed up and smelled nice lol. We made a nice looking couple if you ask me.
She was a dealer for years at Bally's. Told me stories of dealing cards to the high rollers. Pai Gow was her game. Asians love it and tip well. Especially when comped drinks.
My mom and her have been lifelong friends since circa 1976. My sister and I still stay in touch with her son and daughter. They live in Chicago. Don't ask me why.

This is what Jack Hardy says about "I Ought to Know"

I ought to know more than I know
I ought to know where this road goes
I ought to know great literature by heart
The history of art
This I ought to know

I ought to know more than 1492
I ought to know what the Buffalo Bills do
I ought to know more than the quarterback's wounded knee
What happened at Sand Creek
This I ought to know
But I don't

I ought to know about the sacrifices made
I ought to know ration stamps, air raids
I ought to know more than George C. Scott
And John Wayne get shot
This I ought to know

I ought to know what the drinking gourd means
I ought to know more than "I have a dream"
I ought to know about the back of the bus
And the crack of billy clubs
This I ought to know
But I don't

(chorus:)
I don't know nothing about nothing
But I'm proud to stand upright
I don't know nothing about nothing
But my future looks so bright
Illumined by the light
Laugh-tracks, soundbites
And a replay to get it right
I ought to know

I ought to know the songs of Joe Hill
I ought to know Trotsky, Marx and Hagel
I ought to know about the Haymarket hangings
And the H.U.A.C
This I ought to know

I ought to know about Oliver Cromwell
I ought to know about the Gnostics and St. Paul
I ought to know what Jesus really said
And who the preacher takes to bed
This I ought to know
But I don't

I ought to know what's buried in the landfill
I ought to know about the clear-cutting bills
I ought to know about pipelines and schemes
What extinction really means
This I ought to know

I ought to know for whom the bell tolls
I ought to know the pride and prejudice of polls
I ought to know if the grapes of wrath are union
Picked by Victor Jara's hands
This I ought to know
But I don't

....... probably a lot we all should know :-)

Something about a 12-piece band fronted by the Slide Man and Herself Susan putting out the big sound on groovy R&B, space jams and little combos within the 12 players and her voice and his voice that gets me every time. And it's so cool to have been fans of each of them before they joined forces that makes it all even better.

OK DEEDEE, Since you know tell us whether the release is awesome or not rather than railing at other comments.
For what it’s worth ( a good song IMO) I think the release is better than average and I was surprised at how good the two aud tracks sound. I think the second show is marginally better than the first but both are enjoyable.

Reading everyone’s requests for possible releases I can only quote Sir Henry at Rawlinson’s End, “I don’t know what I want, but I want it now”. I look forward to whatever comes my way although I’d prefer it wasn’t an ultra matrix recording. The mixed in audience sounds don’t sound right to me, but each to their own.

The only thing with talking about American politics on here is that if you don't live in America, the chances are you won't know what people are talking about. hey Deedee, I come to this site every day, to read and mostly enjoy the, as you call it, ludicrous posts on this site. I haven't seen any "liberal whining" that you speak of. Now I might have missed it so could you point them out to me? Now I know somedays things can be tough and one might feel the need to come on a groovy site and crap all over it, but really, this is not the place for such foolishness.
As far as liberal whining, well it surely isn't as bad as trying to install an illegitimate fake king, is it? Or trying to take senior citizens life blood away ie SS or...I could go on but hopefully, you get my drift. All that is left to say is, hey dude, you're not part of the sideshow here, are you?
I have read and read these pages and nowhere did I see anyone blaming someone else for ignorance or the world's problems. Unless it was supposed to be taken as a joke. Check sense of humor, I know it's difficult sometimes but life it seems is easier with a smile on your face.
As far as you oughta know if Dave's is good or awesome, why start a row, gee, follow your own recommendations and read a book or go to the library and check it out and listen to it. Music is very subjective and therefore what some think is awesome may be not to your liking and vice versa.
Rubbish? One man gathers what another man spills. All are included here. even you.
political rant over, as you were.

I second Billy The Kidd’d’s excellent suggestion to release a comprehensive list of all the Crown Jewels in the vault, including those Bear Banana boxes. It would be amazing to know what tapes are in storage, waiting to see the light of day.
Perhaps Dave needs an intern or two to help put the list together, and I’m thinking there would literally be thousands of volunteers on this site alone! If the TicketBastard fiasco with Taylor Swift ticket sales was bad, wait until Dave posts that he needs a “couple of helping hands”!!! ;)
Great idea, Billy!

I check in this site on a somewhat regular basis and I often notice snide political comments being made without repercussion or comment...unless the comment is not leaning left at which point the pile on begins. Take a look and you may find that there are a number of political comments criticizing those who the left disagrees with, often labelled as someone's political post for the month, and notice the lack of any outcry to keep politics off the site in response to those posts. I stopped coming here as regularly in the spring of 2020, when this site pretty much turned into a political message board intolerant of anything other than unquestioning support for Joe Biden and the agenda of the left. Questioning whether all of the random destruction and rioting after the George Floyd murder was an appropriate response was heresy. Pointing out the unassailable fact that Joe Biden was the primary author of the federal laws escalating and militarizing the drug war during his decades as head of the Senate Judiciary Committe responsible for the drafting of federal criminal law was blasphemy and resulted in demands to keep your political thoughts to yourself. If you don't want politics on the site, don't make political posts. If you do make political posts, realize, someone is going to disagree and may want to respond. And if you plan to respond with a viewpoint to the right of center, prepare to be piled on.

And RIP Raquel.

I keep getting drawn back to two excellent live Can cds this week, both From 1975 - "Live In Brighton" and "Live In Stuttgart". Both doubles, every minute filled with exploratory improvisational rock. Although nothing else I have heard in rock music sounds like it. The Dead are name checked in the sleeve notes to the Brighton set, with Can's wall of sound amp lay out apparently influenced by pictures of The Dead's set up. Their pre concert music ritual ensured they were up and flying from the moment they took to the stage to the moment they left it.

I can remember the response to George Floyd's death here in England -which denied discussion in a way. Some people I knew were dropping on to one knee so fast you would have thought they'd been shot.

Normally business is not something I want to discuss here, but I also wanted to thank David Zaslav the CEO of Warner Discovery. I had wondered if he would sell off the Warner Music Division, but instead, he has strengthened it. I received my copy a couple of days before official release date and the packaging with one exception appears better produced, etc.

So thanks to both Dave's, and of course all of the other contributors to the Dave's Pick Series. Nice Job!!!

I always ask that politics and religion not be discussed here. I have opinions on both, but try not to discuss or respond to others posts. For me, this is Grateful Dead Headquarters and all I want out of it is Grateful Dead stories. I have been a head almost 40 years, and yet, I know I still have a lot to learn. Just their 30 year life, and the millions they touched, should be enough to keep the discussion going for a long time. I prefer Dead show discussions and then any other music discussion, like see below.

Dave Rock, a few weeks back I mentioned not being able to get some brain cells to pull back memories. It was about the death of Crosby and also Jeff Beck. The Crosby story, from what I remember, concerns Crosby opening for Grateful Dead on 12/31/86. I think it was Crosby, then Neville Brothers then at 10 -10:15 Grateful Dead first set. Crosby talked about being in prison, so I had to go back and do some research. I thought he said, "I was in a Mexican Prison, and believe me (a warning!!!) you definitely dont want to go there". When I did my research, he was in a Texas prison on bunk charges from years before he turned himself into authorities. Now Texan and Mexican can be confused but did he say "I was in a Texas prison and it was no better than a Mexican prison." Not sure, as again I had the Big Head. Regardless, he was just warning the audience to be careful as times had not gotten better for the party people, it may have gotten worse. Which I think it was worse in the mid 80's then at the beginning of this psychedelic adventure. Like I posted about some Ventura shows, it was a laid back time, the DEA had not begun its infiltration or as I call it the deepening of the Federal Government's illegal war on American Citizens. (OK some politics). But now, we see renewed strength in scientific breakthroughs concerning Psychedelics being very positive in helping those suffering from severe trauma.

And to the Feds, you have already legalized Marijuana as you made CBD legal nationally, which of course, is from the male plant. But you cant have a male without a female. Hopefully, my last political thought here, everyone in Washington D.C. is most absolutely the deepest of SCUM!

OK I apologize for that one, but only because I made a political statement.

OK, now back to my mantra.

More 1977 ...but nevertheless, while I have come to think 5/8/77 may be overrated, 5/7/77 now seems very underrated. And as RSD releases can be bought in the UK ...I think I'll be stepping out for this one.

Talk to me baby... everyone doing the hump, the humpty humpty.

Name the famous bass player on that one?

And Umphrey's is indeed a great band. After I got off the bus, from seeing GD shows, I did a lot of jam band exploration starting in the early 1990's and going through about 2005, when Katrina hit New Orleans. The last time I saw Umphrey's McGee was Jazz Fest at night 2003 at the State Palace Theater. It was Umphrey's McGee opening for Moe. It was a great show. I saw Moe with Medeski Martin and Wood in 2002, I think, maybe earlier. The night after Umpff at the State Street Theater, on Saturday, I went to Gov't Mule at the Saenger Theater where they filmed "The Deepest End, record, cd, dvd. I always recommend both the CD and the DVD, as the cd has songs the dvd doesnt and vice versa. Warren Haynes and Mule put on one of the best concerts I ever saw. Show started around 7pm and let out around 3am. If you havent seen I recommend highly. Just double checked on ebay and the 2cd set with the dvd is available brand new. I bought them separate, I am assuming they have re-issued as for years you couldnt find the dvd at all. (Edit, looks like import so watch the dvd region as i did not check that out.)

Saw a bunc of crazy stuff that weekend. East Coast West Coast Jazz Allstars at Howlin Wolf's, Buckethead, and as written before, The Funky Meters which show started at midnight Sunday-Monday.

Have not been back to New Orleans since Katrina...I am to old for some of this sh1t. Just read, the State Palace has not been renovated since Katrina which is sad as it is almost 100 years old.

It is worth a look to see pictures of both of these wonderful Palaces...makes me think of the old Kaiser Auditorium, many of the same issues, everyone wants renovation, but it is always very expensive.

And ummm, the aforementioned bass player I saw in 1977 or1978 with Parliament Funkadelic. The Mothership Connection! Absolutely Wild as the ship landed.

Oh yeah, and Ellis D. Trails - so nice!

Might take a while longer; seeing brand new copies selling or having been sold well below cost, some with free shipping. Similar prices for #44.
Wouldn't be surprised if they go from 25,000 to 22,000 next year
