Week of May 29-June 4, 2023
Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have some 1969 Grateful Dead music, and a double dose of 80s Dead, from 1983 and 1988.
Our first selection is from 8/29/69 at the Family Dog in San Francisco, where we have a couple of Pigpen showcases sandwiched around the quite new Casey Jones: Lovelight, Casey Jones, Midnight Hour.
Next is the end of the second set from 8/30/83, the middle night of a three night run at Hult Center in Eugene, OR, featuring Space > Throwing Stones> Not Fade Away> Wharf Rat> Sugar Magnolia.
Lastly this week is the end of the show from 9/3/88 at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, where we have this excellent sequence of Space > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > I Need A Miracle > Morning Dew, One More Saturday Night, Ripple. This is the first electric Ripple since 1971, and the live first performance of the song since 1980.
Be sure to stop by next week for more music from the vault.

08-29-69 Family Dog
Oops - the Casey Jones and Midnight Hour selections above are consistent with the 09-06-69 Family Dog performances (per LMA and as offered here in the past), not 08-29. Casey Jones is different tempo; I hoped Midnight Hour might be a newly-discovered 8/29 track but unfortunately that doesn't seem to prove out. The Lovelight is indeed from 8/29. Thanks Dave - an interesting investigation, and I always appreciate the music!
