Golden era Grateful Dead in the most golden city in the Golden State? Yes, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 46 features the complete unreleased show from the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, 9/9/72. Loosen that tie, this ain't a red carpet rodeo - it's the after party that legends are made of. Consistently excellent from start to finish, this West Coast groove showcases tracks that would soon debut on EUROPE '72, solo material from both Jerry and Bob, a riveting iteration of "China>Rider," a couple of Chuck Berry doozies, a bonkers 35-plus "Other One" that hits all the psychedelic highs, and wraps up with a "Casey Jones"/"Sugar Magnolia"/"One More Saturday Night" finale that'll have you wondering why you wore a tie in the first place. Hooray for Hollywood, indeed.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Owsley Stanley and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Oh, and it ships next week so you'll wanna grab a copy while you can.

The Other One is a book junkie, full on needle to the vain…BUT!
Considering how much of a music junkie I am, and I don’t do cans, so overall she’s a good sport, though there are times…ahem
. Issues usually arise from more specific grievances: “it’s too loud” or “oh no, not that phuching Bob Weirdo again” being the most common. I’m fortunate to have different rooms to go listen, but the uninsulated cardboard walls are no match and almost non existent for the wall of sound lol.
But after being happily unmarried for 26 years ya learn to adjust or go bust…
    So tips!
Number one, if she’s getting to read, than I can usually get away with whatever, within reason lol.
If both of us are hanging in the living room I try to pick stuff we both like, though she’ll tolerate some dead. She likes Jer for the most part but is sick of Tennessee Jed after all these years. But Bob, well lol, that’s another story. She’s more sick of Me and my Uncle than even I am so that gets skipped a lot, and if I mute parts of PITD, especially the “murderd cat” part, that helps. The key I find is to feel, intuit or know when I can slide a show in, or when to break out the Bill Evens! Sometimes I’ll pop in some crap I know she really likes, that she knows I don’t like, either just after a show if I feel reparations are required, or sometimes just before I’m thinking of blasting off to soften her up.
Otherwise, it’s best to retreat to the stereo room, but keep it on 6 instead of 11…(ugggg, like having a Porsche that you can only drive in a 30 mph zone)
But sometimes….sorry Tutz. Sometimes ya just gotta let er rip. Fortunately she understands that for the safety and overall well being of the planet this occasionally needs to happen.
Perhaps it just comes down to two junkies tolerating as part of the enabling ; )

Someday, when they put me in some horrible place, and am not allowed to have anymore possessions, I will have to succumb to some nice cans and the sweetest portable rig I can have smuggled in and hid inside my toilet top, cause music is really the best, and life is pointless without it!
So hang in there Mr Ones, we feel yer pain, we are everywhere!
Ps, sounds like you need some cans!

Hard choices amigos, 100 Db of pure crystal clear multitrack dead versus serene but boring communal existence…
When in doubt, happy wife, happy life usually works ; )

I heard my bird briefly last night but not long enough to grab my Merlin app…the hunt is on…

I never went to the Alexandra Palace - although as it is still standing, there is still time. Apart from the Dead's performances there, it is most known to me for the legendary "14 Hour Technicolour Dream" festival that took place in Spring 1967. Featuring many of the new at the time psychedelic bands, and culminating with Pink Floyd in the early hours of the morning. There is a documentary of all this on dvd - sometimes misleadingly advertised as being of Pink Floyd's set. Which it's not - it's mainly made up of interviews as I remember it. Interesting, though.

Seen some damn good hockey, but at times, you can tell with the long season and real grind at the end that there is some real tiredness also. Just my casual observation.

Disney now floating that espn could be streaming only in a few years. I wish I could by a season ticket for the Predators, and maybe the Atlanta Braves as i do not get bally sports regional channels any more. Makes me :(

And Birds, we have owls, doves like crazy, but also Bald Eagles and Red Tail Hawks. With no hunting, their populations are starting to get pretty big.

Dennis - I was wondering where you were, and this whole time, you was with your wise guy crew in Jersey! Nice to have you back. Two things: I remember The Funk’s single in gold, but I went all out and bought the whole vinyl album in gold - even the cover was gold, as I remember. Likely one of the first vinyl albums I ever traded in, as tastes changed quickly then. If your buddies didn’t like GFR, but liked Zep, you did too! Second, Inherit The Wind is a classic, really Spencer Tracy’s finest performance, and a real great supporting cast. Good call.

Oro - Does a Saturday house call count as double time?
I hope all this smoke we have had hanging super heavy in the atmosphere from the numerous huge forest fires here didn’t make it down your way. A glimpse of how places like India and China live virtually every day with their decrepit air quality from heavy reliance on coal.

Upon my deathbed I will receive divine consciousness…which is nice…

Ha, no offense to our beloved east coasters, but that was just a taste of what goes on out west all the time, though shhhhhhh, so far so good here. Actually getting rain like BITD before…
You should smell it when it’s ten miles from your house! No Bueno!
Seriously though, best to all experiencing that, We feel ya!
We got a brief taste of one of the first ones? Not the big Quebec or Novo Scotia…Nova Scotia, that’s it, the curse will take any means necessary to protect the vault!

Is it too early yell GO Kni…ok, I’ll wait

My early buying days I bought a lot of 45's. Money was hard to come by so why buy an album with songs I didn't know! Loved me some "Greatest Hits" albums. Sly and the Family Stones, the blue Dylan album, Andy Williams, Gene Pitney.... etc. I love how I had, lets say Blood Sweat and Tears Greatest Hits, album would have maybe 16 songs on it. Played it for years. Then cd's came out and now the Greatest Hits album had 25 songs on it AND you never knew these other "greatest hits". :-)

I must be getting old, 24 hour drive to Jersey tuckered me out! I did get 32 MPG (average). Who would have thought that a 6 cylinder with 300 horse would get that! Lord knows the straight 6's from the sixties (250 cubes) maybe got half that mileage and had under 200 ponies!

I figured I throw in some car talk to counter the hockey talk. Also, just because, I'm hoping Vegas wins. Florida is on my shit list for political reasons. So go Vegas!! (how many innings in a hockey game?)

I didn't want to gloat (or jinx it for us) but I thought the same as Oro.
How many years now Oro and HF have we had it bad out west? 10 or more?
Every vacation in recent memory has been a brown horizon experience.
Kinda depressing to go to a gorgeous overlook and not be able to see 5 miles.
And at home it is pretty much normal now to not see the mountains for most of the summer without The Haze. But the number and scope of the Canadian wildfires this year is stunning. If you're getting it bad break out the N-95s again. That stuff is dangerous.

All primo performances mentioned!!!
All past 1979 released performances are Primo & loved by many. Dicks picks 5 was 1979 and after listening to the tapes, everyone can kind of agree how sweet it is! Excellent pick for 79’! Road trips series 1979 released are all primo for my taste!
So many choices for a Dave’s Picks and plenty more for a grateful Primo Boxset to be created! Keep 79’ Alive! Thank you for everyone s posts for 1979 release! I’m truly grateful for feedback! We have such a grateful crew here on dead.net! Have a grateful weekend everyone, peace be with you all!

A Canadian charged up the leaderboard of the Canadian Open. (golf Dennis)
Sets a course record -9 in the process.

Continuing with the first 4 Eagles albums. I like them better than the later ones. No offense to Joe Walsh. Anyone see the later line-up with Vince Gill? I'll bet those were some great harmonies.
They still call them albums because that's how records were sold originally, in a folder type thing with multiple records. Is this true trivia Dennis? Not because you were there but because you know all things LP.

I have posted several times, that Dick's 5 is near the top of shows I wish I had attended. Just real trippy. We have had discussions before about the new P.A. arrangement between Meyer Sound and Ultrasound. This arrangement lead to a new P.A. for those December shows. I forgot how far Don Pearson's(Ultrasound) relationship with GD, but know Meyer worked on building the Wall before starting his full blow P.A. company. I think it was in that hiatus era. Don Pearson went back about as far also. But these shows, from what I remember, were the first in a long history where both companies were actual separated from GD as stand alone entities. GD just spinning off side businesses like ole Rob Dyrdek. Hopefully some other posters will jump in, it was a great discussion. Think it was Jeff Smith that had a lot more knowledge than me.

Now I can't remember things that did happen. Is dementia reverse confabulation? If i even spelled it correctly.

Time for some ponies and hockey!

Don Pearson was the best.

So many great shows in 79. They were really stretching some songs out in fall through the end of the year. My favorite, 11/5/79. Not sure how many times they did an Eyes, Estimated, Franklins, but this sequence is one to remember.

I never heard that before, but makes sense.

I have two Al Jolson collections on 78's and they are in an "album" like package. I also have a Benny Goodman collection and Glenn Miller Air Force Band collection, these are on 45's. There are about 20 45's in each "album". Each 45 has two songs per side. The albums have padded covers. I've had these for about 50 years. In my gas station youth I changed a tire for some guy and these two collections were in his trunk. He gave them to me cause I knew who they were. Just for the hell of it I looked them up recently to see if I was sitting on a fortune. No, they weren't worth shit.

Years ago there was a guy on a local radio station, Hub Cap Carter (The Collector). He brought in old 78's for his show. Since I have about 600 78's I called one night and asked about them. Anything made after the war is almost worthless, they made tons. Ones made during the war,,,, worth money. He said they didn't make many records during the war years because of material needs.

Since I'm on a old music roll....

Anyone know Uncle Floyd? A Jersey personality, had a tv show for years on a minor station. Well he still has a show on the radio. 89.1 WFDU. Plays some great shit.

Uncle Floyd
Sundays 9AM - 12 Noon Eastern Time - HD1

Tuesdays 7PM - 10PM Replay - HD1

Floyd "Uncle Floyd" Vivino was born into a theatrical, show business family in Paterson, New Jersey. In the late 60's, early 70's Floyd began working in the last remaining burlesque theaters as a 'baggy pants comedian'. In 1974 he produced and starred in his own TV show, "The Uncle Floyd Show" until 2001.

Throughout the years, Uncle Floyd has also hosted and produced various radio shows and has had appearences in TV and film.

Uncle Floyd's radio show is a mix of what might be in someone's eclectic collection of LPs, 78s, 45s, etc. that might have been found at any garage sale over the last few decades. Various artists such as Spike Jones, Hoosier Hot Shots, Louis Prima, Roy Rodgers, Jo Stafford, Captain Kangaroo, Bessie Smith, Soupy Sales, Bing Crosby, Ernest Tubb, B.B. King, Judy Garland, Lionel Hampton, Homer & Jethroe.

He's worth checking out, Sunday Mornings on the internet.

Dennis - I knew you were the reference for such things. I too have some "albums" from my folks collection and a couple I've bought at Salvation Army. As you said, some valuable, most not. But they are just cool. Glenn Miller was Mom & Dad's favorite. I'm more of a Benny Goodman, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman sort. Unfortunately I don't have a turntable that can play 78s. Plenty of good Dual by United Audio (German made) players available on fleabay so I need to remedy that. I will look for Uncle Floyd. Sounds like tons-o-fun.

On the vinyl side: Anyone tried the 45rpm reissues of full length LPs? As if vinyl wasn't expensive enough now we have to play it faster for better sound thereby paying double for the same music on more LPs. I've seen them on a couple of vendor sites, maybe Experience Vinyl as one? Does it really sound that much better?

Mike - That putt! Wasn't watching as I traded the TV rights this past weekend to have full access to the U.S. Open this coming week but was checking on the computer occasionally. Hence the jump the gun post. But now that Canada has regained the title I can take full credit for not jinxing it. Ran to the telly when I realized a playoff was happening and saw the final two holes. I was sure Tommy was going to win twice in those two holes. Then The Putt, as it will be known. Tommy had the same putt to win that he had barely missed minutes before and wasn't going to do that again. He is a clutch player who performs well on the big stages. But at least he got beaten and didn't lose it, so to speak. That's the way we want to see a championship end. It may not be the Stanley Cup but 69 years?!!! Wow!
Cheers

If you see this, glad I added a small bit of humor to these discussions.

VGuy - Hope tonight is the night.

D46 is getting into a sweet spot, been also running thru PNW7374 box, forgot how tasty that thing is. What a great release. Waiting on HCS, got my ears tuned up pretty good as I have been in a 72-73 mode for a while, since I put up the MSG box.

Thirty Six years ago, the last Ventura Weekend. It was a very tasty weekend. On the 13th, they put up a screen, showed some movie stuff, built a bonfire. One of the best moments ever as there were maybe 500 people for that late night beach fun. What a party it was. The Shakedown earlier in the day was a monster.

Dang with hockey tonight, do I or don't I drink a few beers? Guess only time will tell.

Hope all are well. Continuing most incredible spring down this way; every thing weather wise seems upside down.

Always love reading your posts as well as the others. Always love the diversity of posts from all.

Things down here are awesome. Well, other than I cracked a tooth yesterday. It was a result of family death's and drama. Kept clinching my jaw. Then started having pain. Went to Dentist not quite a month ago, x-rays looked good, no problem. However, since I have had a root canal, they suggested a crown. As it turns out, it was the root canal tooth that cracked and broke off. Kept that part of the tooth. Waiting on Dentist to call and schedule appointment. With various health issues, trying to determine whether to fix it, fix it and crown it, or just pull the dang thing. Don't have the lifespan now to worry about how good I look in the mirror.

Have been off the Brothers for a while, did listen to that home show I recommended to you on its anniversary. Man, what a show. I do miss Greg Allman much. Also ordered some additional brothers that I haven't had the time to break out yet. It is coming though.

I always have more to post than I can. Never done the last five stuff; maybe I'll take a shot.

DVD:
Peter Gabriel - Growing Up Live
Dweezil Zappa - Zappa Plays Zappa
Nine Inch Nails - Austin City Limits recording. It is a sonic masterpiece.
Zac Brown Band - Live from Forest Hills Stadium, Forest Hills NY. The oldest tennis stadium in the US. Great Venue for shows.
Phish Live in Vegas

CD:
Dweezil Zappa 10/17 and 10/18 2008
Tedeschi Trucks - Made Up My Mind and Revelator (couple of listens each)
Steely Dan - Alive in America
Bob Marley - Babylon By Bus
Widespread Panic Archival Release #3 - 04-03-1996
Little Feat - Waiting on Columbus Box Set - What an awesome box
Peter Gabriel - Passion. Again, a sonic masterpiece. Several listens. This related to passing of relatives. I hope I can find time to use this recording to branch off on what it is to be Grateful Dead.

Probably my only posting of last things listened to, other than GD/Jerry. Generally, do not listen to much other stuff, but have to clean out the system every so often. All those listens were in the last 4-6 weeks. Always have GD on in between.

Peace To All (PTA)

Gary - Sorry to hear of your tough times with family lately. It’s very tough losing those close to us, so my sincere condolences. Better days ahead.

I haven’t played the Allmans lately - so much other stuff on the go - but I did play Dickie Betts’ Bootleg Vol 1 about two weeks ago - he is a wizard on the guitar. It is one of my favourite releases by him, just solid from start to finish. I like some of your selections on your Last 5, funny you have Phish on the list, I just played the Phish Live In Brooklyn this morning! (I’m a very recent convert, after VGuy showed me the light!) Peter Gabriel’s Passion is ethereal, otherworldly stuff, really good, and I think Steely Dan’s Alive In America is really underrated. I’m not playing much Dead lately, I have 46 sitting in my “In” file, but just a bit of Dead fatigue lately. In a couple of weeks, I’ll hear one of their tunes on Sirius while flipping the stations, and sure enough, they are back in regular rotation.

Good luck with the tooth, a nuisance, but dental problems don’t like to be ignored for too long before they send you several reminders to get them fixed! Be well, Gary!

Congrats from the State of Hockey! :)

So, Miami lost two national championships in 24 hours? Kind of like Philadelphia losing the World Series and the MLS Cup within hours of each other? (then losing the Super Bowl a few months later?)

Vegas wins the Stanley Cup, AND steals the A's from Oakland? Big day!

....Flying high again.
THAT win was for the 1 October victims. I attended the inaugural game on 10.10.17 and Vegas was in a bad place mentally. Then this team comes out and says, "we got you." Avatar updated. So fucking cool.
I'm just going to lay in bed and probably not sleep.
I should've went out.

Glad to see your guys win. I really had no dog in this fight since I know nothing about sports, but I was glad, glad I tell you to see Florida lose.

Reminds me of Bogart in To Have and Have Not where he says to Frenchy - I don't know. Maybe because I like you, maybe because I don't like them.
