Golden era Grateful Dead in the most golden city in the Golden State? Yes, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 46 features the complete unreleased show from the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, 9/9/72. Loosen that tie, this ain't a red carpet rodeo - it's the after party that legends are made of. Consistently excellent from start to finish, this West Coast groove showcases tracks that would soon debut on EUROPE '72, solo material from both Jerry and Bob, a riveting iteration of "China>Rider," a couple of Chuck Berry doozies, a bonkers 35-plus "Other One" that hits all the psychedelic highs, and wraps up with a "Casey Jones"/"Sugar Magnolia"/"One More Saturday Night" finale that'll have you wondering why you wore a tie in the first place. Hooray for Hollywood, indeed.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Owsley Stanley and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Oh, and it ships next week so you'll wanna grab a copy while you can.

Anyone know what's really up with Billy sitting out the "final" tour? Playing drums in a rock band is an athletic pursuit, and often the drummer is the first to go as guys get into their sixties and beyond. U2's Larry Mullen, Jr. is currently unable to go, Aerosmith is going on without Kramer, etc. Which is why Charlie Watts, gentleman drummer, is one of the greatest rock drumming legends of all time. Charlie pushed 80 behind the kit and never missed a beat.

I don't believe the tripe about "creative differences." Even with old new blood in the band like Burbridge, Mayer and Chimenti, the D&C repertoire and style has been well established now for several years. There's really not a hell of a lot of room for creative differences in this context.

They certainly slowed things down enough for Bill to keep up... if the tempos had gotten any more leaden they would have called it, "Wolf Bros."

It must be something else... could it be money, or a deep conflict with another band member? I doubt it. Bill the drummer sat out shows last time around and Jay Lane filled in admirably. I think he's just run out of steam and they didn't announce his absence until 2/3 of summer tour was sold.

Or maybe he's changing teams and joining back up with Phil. Stranger things have happened.

Greatest, most amazing Clapton set ever. Ton of live shit included as well which makes the title somewhat misleading. Excited to be seeing Clapton one more time in Denver this September, and one week later he's bringing his Crossroads Guitar Festival back around to L.A. The man is going out with fire.

Can’t we all just get along??

DAVEROCK, I laughed my ass off when I read:

My mother bless her soul, was a great advocate of what she called "the art of conversation", which basically meant not talking about anything that might cause unpleasantness. The subjects she mentioned were politics, religion and sex. Funnily enough, she didn't mention hockey.

I realized that there are times when I read this thread only, and feel no need to comment. I still like reading everything though.

When it comes to music, I think there are certain bands/genres that don’t go over generally as well on the opposite side of the pond.
As an example, I never quite cottoned on to ‘pub rock’, ‘NWOBHM’ or ‘Northern Soul’. It just seems much more popular on the East side of “the big pond”. However, I never mind READING about these, or any other types of music. I’m quite pleased that we have so many Heads in Europe, and I love hearing from all of them. Keep it coming lads!!

Differences, that’s what make threads like this one great!!
Go Leafs, go Orioles, go Reds from Anfield, go everybody!!

We've Gotten Much Better

It seems to me we have gotten much better and offend far less often then we used to.

This is a Grateful Dead thread, but topics vary and conversations naturally stray.. I pass on things that do not interest me and chime in on the ones that do.. for the most part it all starts and evolves around the music, the band, the life and times of we intrepid travelers and all that comes with it. We are all connected but our interests vary..

As long as things are polite and don't stray too far i.e. into another orbit.. the world spins merrily along. This latest divergence got away from us because at it's core.. the post that threw us off was not particularly nice, not polite and it soured the moods of a whole lot of people reading it. The pox on bad manners..

A little beer, a little wine, a little sports, a little window pane is alright with me. Sometimes someone loses their car at a show it doesn't find it until the next week.. makes for a great story. I do like hearing and checking out some of the non-GD music ideas that spawn from these threads, they usually circle back to the core conversation pretty quickly. In this world of trouble, what you guys and gals post here is almost always interesting and moves the conversation forward. Keep it coming folks, just don't piss on somebody else's parade.

Hope that's ok to say.. really.. there is stuff to learn here in between the drums, space and mayhem. That's all I've got.

Dicks Picks 18.. goodness, that is one great release.. the first one that really opened my eyes to 1978 Grateful Dead.

Vguy -You dreamed it - no '73 SLC Dark Star. And, if its the Dark Star on DiP28 you're thinking of, that is from Lincoln, NE. Like Drpryan said, the Dark Star - the full show - from 4/12/69 at the Student Union Ballroom, U of U is a real good un.

Dead performed the song Salt Lake City once, 2/21/95. Strider was there. Show released in the 30 Trips box. Beautiful Foolish Heart and first Visions of Johanna since the pair in '86.

You mentioned a couple of weeks back that you had watched Phish's Live in Brooklyn DVD. Wanted to post that is a huge part of my yearly rotation. Listen to it 2-3/year. Just an awesome performance, just one of many I had a chance to see but was too busy at work to go. The last time I was in the Hampton Coliseum was for the recording of Hampton Comes Alive. Think, from memory, it was Cincy, Murfreesboro, and Hampton. A fun little jaunt. All three were wild. Saw Phish first time in November of 1995. A Live One also a great recording. Hard to believe but 2023 marks their 40th anniversary as a band. Happy anniversary Phish!!! Love you guys, get a couple of shows in next few weeks, and then maybe Nashville. Fall dates announced.

I've been enjoying these, Scott. Thanks so much for going through the trouble to clean these up and get them out there.

Evokes some great memories.. in the days before internet (at least as we know it now), social media and cell phones.. when Duprees Diamond News was how a lot of us figured out what was going on during the shows we could not attend, this looks like it was put together about this time. I have never seen any of it before.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it. When I was producing and directing the show, I tried to make a show I would like to watch, an intelligent comment on the scene, show highlights, tour highlights, what a venue that I could not attend was like. I'd be interested in interviews with people involved in the Dead sphere, and with deadheads themselves, because they seemed to be interesting people. That's why we did "Deadhead Profiles". I felt like the straight media at the time was missing how cool the scene and the deadheads were, and as a professional journalist I could tell the story better, at least from a informed deadhead's perspective. What was amazing is it took off like a rocket, and we soon had all sorts of deadhead friends contributing to the show.
