    In 1973, following the recent passing of founding member Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and the temporary exit of drummer Mickey Hart, Grateful Dead released WAKE OF THE FLOOD. As the debut album from their own record label, Grateful Dead Records, the studio LP marked a period of transition, growth, endurance and optimism for the band, introducing a fresh lineup that included new members Keith and Donna Godchaux on keys and vocals. While songs like “Eyes Of The World,” “Stella Blue,” and “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” were largely road-tested for more than half a year beforehand, and have remained staples of live sets by any number of Dead-related bands ever since, the album and record label delivered both a profound artistic statement and proof of concept for the community, ideals and future the band were building.
     
    WAKE OF THE FLOOD (50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION) features the album’s seven original songs and previously unreleased demo recordings of “Eyes Of The World” and “Here Comes Sunshine.” Recorded in early 1973, just before the Grateful Dead performed on February 9th, the demos feature Jerry Garcia singing and playing a pair of new songs he and Robert Hunter had been creating.
     
    WAKE OF THE FLOOD (50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION) also includes a bonus disc of live material from the final night of a brief tour that immediately followed WAKE OF THE FLOOD’s release. Captured at Northwestern University’s McGaw Memorial Hall on November 1st, 1973, the set is bookended with “Weather Report Suite” and “Mississippi Half-Step,” and features one of the most creative and inspired jams of the entire run: “Morning Dew”>”Playing In The Band”>”Uncle John's Band”>”Playing In The Band.”

    Big sonic difference between AB and WotF

    To all, Daverock first: I did love WotF from the get-go. I was high on the live sound that summer and the LP came out in October, right after my last show of the year, Oct. 7 or 8. The more concise studio versions were welcome. I mean, I spent quite a bit of the preceding year chasing the GD and tripping my ass off, turning 16 in August. (Rock 'n roll!) So if you were a band member, fresh from a catered meal, a blast of tootskie, and a groupie waiting for you, playing Eyes for a half hour was NOTHING compared to being a psychedelic kid in the masses before the stage, blasted by an enormous sound system and jostled by thousands. I've said it before: at that stage and that age, by the time they were deep into the second set, we'd already spent the day getting there, dealing with crowds, and given the typical delays and the set break, we were 4-5 hours into the "show" and there were times I was ready for it to end. (Imagine!) That was the reality on the ground at that time -- 73 sets are infamously "generous" on length. Of course, we have to chuckle now, because ... because.

    So hanging at home and putting a record on the turntable was so much more civilized than wading into the psychedelic maelstrom typical of early 70s shows....

    Now to the sonics... WotF, like AB, mixed acoustic and electric instruments, but they sounded completely different. One is tempted to say a bit "sterile," not warm. That remains my impression. Somewhat like my long-held impression that Exile on Main Street sounds a bit muddy. So I look forward to a fresh listen to WotF, which has safely arrived here, to see what it sounds like at volume. (When I got it originally, I was a freshly minted 16 year-old who couldn't really blast the thing at home.) Sure I've played the reissues over the years, but these 50th's offer an opportunity for a focused (well, fairly well "focused") fresh listen.

    Greetings to Oro and all my compatriots here. Truth is, I have discovered a special woman and am in hot pursuit. She is my muse now and I'm writing up a storm. Thus, some delays in HF transmissions may be expected.......

    Interesting. Unlike you, I listened to the 70's Dead albums completely out of context. I read whatever books or articles I could find on them, but they still seemed very distant in a way. In 1976, I bought many of their albums, so I got WOTF at the around the same time I got Anthem and American Beauty, without having seen them live.
    I didn't like jazz at all in the 70's. The musical climate in England in 76 couldn't have been more different from the Dead's. This, and 1977, were the years punk arrived, and I saw many of the main players during those years. Although I thought Working Mans and American Beauty were great, WOTF sounded very laid back in the company of The Sex Pistols! I did like it - but not as much as the earlier studio albums.
    Maybe I should also say that I would far rather listen to WOTF now than any punk album that came out in 76-77.

    Finally got a good listen to disc 1...

    ...and I love it!! It can be YEARS in between times that I listen to studio albums, so just as in this case, it sounded so FRESH to me. When this happened the last time, I played Terrapin Station (edit-I claim temporary insanity!!), for the first time in FOREVER, and it sounded fantastic!! I realized that even though there are dozens of GREAT versions of Estimated Prophet, I like the studio version better!! Row Jimmy, WRS, Mississippi Half-Step, even Here Comes Sunshine sounds absolutely shimmering!! The keys, drums, Jerry (of course!!) and the horns are brilliant!!
    Now the demos?? Great googly-moogly, I love them. The keyboards on Eyes Of The World (there's 2 different ones) sound like Keith accompanied by Schroeder from Peanuts!! And I love that they both SOUND like demos, but so much the better for it!! Here Comes Sunshine definitely shows the way toward the 11-13 minute versions that came in '73/'74. Just ear pleasingly superb. And lest I forget (and I did), Let It Grow ends JUST when it's getting HOT!! The studio version should have gone 20 minutes or more.
    I need more listens!!

    Hendrixfreak and Daverock ......... After graduating from Penn State in June 1973 and seeing the Dead in RFK, Watkins Glen, Jersey City and then up and down the East coast ending in Tampa in December I remember liking WOTF very much. I drove my parents crazy just graduating and doing basically nothing but following the Dead all over the place. I also remember being one of the early people to join the Grateful Dead Mailing list (Live Dead) from the Album address .......I received a letter from the Dead asking me to go to all the local Record Stores and check to see if the Numbers on the Spine were White or Orange...Because many Bootlegs were showing up since it was the Deads new record label. Eyes of the World became my Favorite Live song...And I have always loved the Album

    I respectfully disagree. Yes WOtF sounds a bit funky perhaps, but the versions played in the studio I think are some of the best “studio” cuts they ever captured on tape! Now, I’m not saying that the songs weren’t better or became better live, just that as far as studio Dead albums I think this one is way underrated.
    The versions are well played and energetic, it just has horns and sounds different.
    Speaking of horns, how come nobody ever complains about the perhaps sometimes excessive ones on Bobs solo album? It just drives me nuts wondering why this superb album gets so little love?

    Yes Its quite different than any other album, but you could say that about ANY GD album!
    But that’s because it’s jazz man. I’ve never understood why this album isn’t loved more since many heads are also jazz nuts? Sure one could argue it’s not pure jazz, but a cool hybrid that wasn’t fusion, which made it stand out at the time since much of jazz was going that way, or Soul Jazz.
    Oh well, chever way yer pleasure tends…

    Always thought this one is best at this time of year too…

    HF- I don't think anyone knows you're here! The album obviously doesn't attract much attention on here. I wondered how it was received at the time. Having seen them that summer, did it meet up with your expectations?

    I started buying Dead albums in 1976, when I was 19. I liked them all, but WOTF seemed a bit of an odd one. It doesn't have the psych feel of the 60's albums, or the roots feel of Working Man's Dead and American Beauty. A bit subdued. I liked it, but it hardly reflected my lifestyle at the time. I haven't played it for a long time - unlike the earlier albums, I don't remember any of the tracks on it being anywhere near as good as the live versions played that year. As opposed to some songs from American Beauty, for example. The studio versions of "Box of Rain", "Ripple" or "Attics"remain for me the definitive ones - never bettered live.

    I might add that the 11-1-73 live disc here would seem to indicate that Watkins Glen, its soundcheck, and just possibly 7-31-73 and 8-1-73 may remain under consideration for release. When BB King was asked when that might be, he said:

Well, my prediction of a Watkins Glen soundcheck paired with WotF is proven incorrect, but I think that bodes well for a more inclusive Watkins Glen pkg down the road.

The 'bonus' live material here sounds good, as does demos of Eyes and Sunshine.

Glad to see this roll out for fall.

What's happening fellas. Yeah, also in for the live disc. You can never have too much '73 in the arsenal. I've never heard 11/1/73, but it's close enough to 10/30 that I'm going to assume they're still hot. Plus Dave says the 2nd set jam is "one of the most creative and inspired jams of the entire run". Heeere's my credit card, thank you - did it go through? - ok, excellent. More '73 help on the way.

Yep, that live material is the draw for me. Admittedly I do not own Wake of the Flood, so that is also very cool too. As for that 11/1/73 show, I did some preliminary digging, and it does not look as though the whole show exists on tape, at least not in circulation. However I may be wrong. From what I can find, what does exist are the soundboards from of the entire 2nd set. I wonder what the vault has in it because the Weather Report Suite is 1st closer. Maybe a few more reels? Who knows, but either way this is cool.

Like the Bear's Choice reissue, this seems like a missed opportunity. Seems like it wouldn't have been too hard to release a full show where they were featuring lots of WotF tunes. Seems like it would've been a great opportunity to finally put Watkins Glen out, as HF suggested. Coulda shoulda woulda.

But will I buy it? Um, yeah.

I've always had a soft spot for Wake. A much better album than most people seem to think, IMO. I mean, come on, there's 7 tunes, and 6 of 'em are Dead classics the band played for the rest of its performing lifetime. Nor sure why so many people seem to give it a "meh" on the stoke-o-meter. So I'm looking forward to hearing it again in the best possible sound. And, yeah, sure, the live disc will be great too, I'm sure. Just wish they'd dug a little deeper.

The 7-27-23 announcement was not about 7-27-73.
Guess we’re getting 7-27,28-73 for DaP48.

This bonus disc looks tasty.

Should have added another CD to get the rest of the 2nd set and it would be nice to know just how much of the 1st set is in the vault as they obviously have part of it (WRS doesn't circulate and is from the 1st set). I absolutely would have paid a little more if this included everything they have from 11/1, but this was an easy pass. Seems this is the way they go for all of the next 50th releases.

And it comes down to:
1. Do I need the additional stuff for the price of a whole show?
2. Does it sound that much better than my vinyl?
3. Will it play in my CD player?
No, no, and maybe.
I'll have to live to 100 to hear all I have now, and that's if I listen every waking hour. Not such a bad fate but also not bloody likely.

Edit: 1st set 10-27-73 (Indy) is on Taper's this week and it's free, lol. And damn it's good! That fast TLEO, Greatest Story, and a slow Loose Lucy are worth a listen.

Edit 2 (7-31-23): Now I can hear almost the entire 2nd CD of this release on the newest Taper's. Weird! Really disincentivising the purchase at this point.

should have given us the entire 2nd set here instead of that weather report suite, He's Gone>Wharf Rat sorry, really no comparing and to leave off these two and the rest of the set is sacrilegious. I still have my original copy of this lp and I do like it but I will pass on this release also.

This is like my favorite album... how can I not get this release? I know all you are saying, I have to live to 100... I have the vinyl, the 11/1/73 set is only partial... but I still have to get it to pass it on... Thank you Dead.net looking fwd to getting this one! C'mon... its more '73 :-) iGrateful

Yeah, I’m mostly just getting these rehashes for the live bonus material too, so only one bonus disc, after setting the bar high with AB and WMD, and now going skimpy is kinda lame. Obviously, using this board as a reference, it’s going to hurt sales…
And once again, the bonus disc doesn’t have much from the associated album? If you count WRS as one song, that’s only two…9/15 or 9/17 would have been much more appropriate, as they both have 6 songs from Wake, including the jazz cats that played on the album. (and their great shows!) If they think folks are going to just bye rehash with so little incentive, i fear sales will become so bad they’ll have to stop. Seems like the cost of another disc or two would be worth the significant boost in sales? Instead their prolly going to get stuck with a bunch of inventory….

11/1/73: interesting about WRS being available, as only second is on archive (as mentioned below).
Curious about the first set, because the second set is awesome! Tough call on what to cut. If the WRS is top shelf, suppose I’d rather have that than yet another He’s Gone/Truckin? But still….WHY cut it?
Hate to complain about getting any quality live dead, but this is another head scratcher.
Yeah I’m going to get it, mostly just to support the cause, (their not going to keep releasing if we don’t purchase) and to add to the collection, and because I’m a 73 nut, though I do really like WOTF.
Always wondered why it didn’t seem to get a lot of love? Fucking Jazz Dead! Come on, what’s not to like! Several really good studio performances too, something they didn’t normally get. The sound is a little different, but it’s not bad, just different, and most of their albums usually do sound different. And like some one said, most of the songs where staples throughout. But without more of a bonus incentive, I can totally dig why a lot of folks will pass on this one. These Warner folks sure seem good at stepping over a dollar to pick up a nickel?

More importantly, if their only going to do one disc bonuses, that means prolly only 3/23/75 for Allah and not 6/17/75, which you’d think has to come out! (For BTK if nothing else ; )
74/Mars might work out as there’s so many partially picked at carcasses to choose from, but going forward, that one disc scenario is going to kill these reissues…

Or more accurately what the hell?
Today's new Taper's has 11-1-73:
Dew>Playin'>UJB>Playin'.
Is this not the same as the 2nd CD of this release?
(without the WRS and the Half Step on either end of it)
Is it to spur sales? Sort of a listening party?

Even better if/when Dave puts out what remains in the Vault as filler on another release.

If the whole show isn’t in the Vault, then releasing what does exist over 2 releases as filler is fine with me. It doesn’t count against my annual allotment of a DaP subscription and a Box.
Kind of sad though that those are all I can get annually.

Increase my allotment Dave/Rhino!

....to give up. But yeah. Frustrating to say the least re shipping updates/defective merchandise. I would say paying for upgraded shipping would help, but I've read some heads here saying that it doesn't make a lick of difference.
My issues ordering here have admittingly been minimal, but, unless some are making shit up, it is an issue.
As someone here also said, Phish's Dry Goods and The Garcia Fam Foundation seem to make it work.
I'm just re-beating the same 'ole drum at this point.

So glad, Dead.net, took the time to mention: Garcia's Birthday or even The Days Between. How do your forget that? I hope you remember John Mayer's......lol

It looks a bit threadbare to me, this release. I've never heard Wake of the Flood on cd. I liked the original album when I got it, and for the next few years, but I seem to discard it when I started getting tapes. For me,all the songs on it are superseded by live versions from the same year. That wasn't always the case with the earlier albums, which to me still sound great and unique. So this was the first studio album by The Dead that isn't essential. I think I'll still get it, though, for the live cd.

Looking forward to this as 11/1/73 was my first Dead show - At 16 I was (and still am) a HUGE ABB fan and the Allmans, touring behind Brothers and Sisters, were at the International Amphitheater the same night and since Northwestern was about 15 minutes away (as opposed to driving down to Chicago's south side - the IA was on Halsted not far from Comiskey Park) - the decision to see the Dead was easy......sort of

Unfortunately my buddy, who drove, had the attention span of a gnat and NO knowledge of the Dead's music (much less the culture) and I could tell he was frustrated and bored out of his mind. Shortly after the second set started, he stated, "This sucks. There's no chicks here. Let's leave!" Huh? There WERE chicks there - just not the bimbo cheerleader types he was looking for. After all, we were 16 - I mean, come on....

So I did get to see the FIRST set, and about 10 minutes of the second set. Needless to say, from that point on I was extremely careful about WHO I went to shows with I NEVER let ANYONE drive me to a show unless I KNEW they were willing to go the distance. Literally.

Tough life lesson, for sure. *laugh*

Can't wait to finally hear what I missed.....!

P.S. I see some complaints about this not being the full show - I know for a fact after looking for this for over 20 years that there is no complete version available of this show that would meet the standards of most discerning Dead fans.....although deadlists shows that a complete SBD is available I'm almost positive (however, I'll happily admit being wrong about this) that WXRT broadcast the second set but not the first, so if the full show were released there would be a lot of complaints about the audio quality of Set 1 not matching Set 2, which would be a valid complaint - I mean, how many shows were you glad to get in trade, but wouldn't have wanted to necessarily pay for, mainly because of the sound? I think most fanatics would be OK with an audience patch or two but a whole set's worth? Not so much....and I was there. I'm sure the decision was made because this was a unique closing set of the very short tour that followed the release of the record and it was the last night of that unusual tour.....that said, I agree that it would have been nice to have a clean SBD of the entire second set - however, there may have been sound issues (see above) or maybe they just wanted to get it onto one disc.

Who knows? All I know is I can't wait to hear it.

I am an avid Dead collector. I love "Wake of the Flood" (drive my wife nuts wearing my WOTF shirt all of the time, when she hates the cover). I've had this since shortly after its initial release. Can't begin to tell you how many versions and formats I've bought since then.
I've even bought quite a few of the 50th Anniversary Releases. However, I'm also an audiophile and am sitting here listening to the 2004 "Beyond Description" box version and am asking myself what advance am I going to hear here in terms of sound? Also, not sure if the extra cd is that much of a gain over the extras on the 2004 version? I'm on the fence on this one. What's going to convince me that this edition is worth it?

Ever see that restored fresco of Jesus?

You've probably already got it, but I thought the 50th anniversary of "American Beauty" sounded glorious. So did "Anthem" and Aoxomoxoa" in their original states. So I would have thought anyone who likes "Wake Of The Flood" will be well impressed with whatever the new one sounds like. For me the live disc is the draw - but it's a bit expensive to buy it just for that one cd.

Well, like my Cousin Eecktar says “ lil bit o somethin better than all of nothing”, so I’m looking forward to receiving a fresh 73 Dead fix, possibly next week?

I can't really get too excited about this one and I love new releases. At one point it was 19.99 on Amazon and I still didn't jump.

Maybe not the best idea to release a single bonus cd of live music from 1973, when 17 have been released a couple of months earlier. If this had come out before the box, it might have been more celebrated.

New live material is always cause for excitement in my house. I'll be swinging by my Cactus Records in Houston, TX on Friday to grab the CD. Was hoping for a full show from the Martin Fierro lineup, but I'm still excited to hear the live disc + the new remaster/outtakes.

I’m with you View, wish there had been one of the cool shows from Syracuse or Providence (those shows included most of the albums new material and are great shows!). But by being chintzy they obviously screwed themselves on this one. Daverock does make a good point, but I bet if they’d added a whole show or at least one of the second sets from above, their would have been more interest?
Hope this doesn’t put a corporate kibosh on 73 as there’s soooo much good stuff left: first six shows of the year are amazing!, still some fall/winter chestnuts like 12/18 anyone?, AND, still some killer spring shows etc
I’ll go out on a limb and say there’s more good 73 shows left than 72! Of course the last 72 didn’t do so well either?

Yes, I agree as well that a show featuring Martin Fierro would have been a good choice. A different sound from the 17 cd shows - and something quite unique to the year. Also, as Martin played on Wake of the Flood, releasing one of the shows in which he played live with them might have been truer to the spirit of the album.

I’ve never understood why there’s been such, well hates a strong word, but so much resistance to these shows?
Yeah the band with the horns isn’t always the tightest, but I don’t recall anything horrible, just different, and they don’t play all the time….and it’s a very unique part if the bands history: Dead Jazz. Certainly it deserves at least a one show representation?
Dave has the DS William & Mary show on his list, and it too is a good show, but so are Syracuse and/or Providence and they have more songs off the album….so 2 shows lol, one of these two, and the Dark Star. OR….maybe one of the two, with the DS sequence as filler/bonus ; )

But, prolly won’t happen now as they’ve had a hard time selling out “normal” stuff, let alone something that’s never been embraced…

Maybe if they stepped away from the "normal stuff" sales would increase. I can't honestly remember the details of the shows with horns from 1973. I had some cassettes years ago, but I haven't listened to them for over 20 years. But if they get released now, I would want to get them.
Maybe a case could be made for releasing shows that were different in some way. 2/23/75, where they opened with Blues For Allah and encored with Johnny B. Goode would be another essential purchase for me.

I think the reason for 46 not being sold out in a few days is (and I never thought I would live to say this) it is a 1972 show weI didnt need.. Lemieux has given us 4 Daves 1972 - but not one Dark Star.. I liked the bonus disc with 46, but... Hope number 48 will be a Spring 1982.. BW to you all

I remember being WTF? when he did that average Berkeley show, when there were two killer DS he skipped?
Now, if they’re really going to keep doing this for awhile, then I can see slowly dolling out the good stuff, but I don’t think that’s gonna happen, not if sales continue to drop, which means, what the hell are they waiting for…release the hounds Smithers….#freethereels….storm the vaults….! We need more Dark Stars lol

I agree, and no offense to anyone who loves it, but I think 46 was another right neighborhood, right street, wrong house pick. Sure it’s good, but we all know plenty not out yet that are RJ versus just good…

And again, no offense to anyone or their preferences, but I think it’s been a good idea, from a business standpoint, to dip into the later years more as they seem to go a bit faster, and there’s potentially a bigger customer base due to age/demographics . Now if he started picking RJ shows from the later years, I think it might improve sales, though I think the online tax BS has hurt sales the most?

As far as 1975 Daverock, I think we’ll probably get 3/23/75 as the Blues for Allah 50th rehash bonus. I thought they’d kick down and we’d get 6/17/75, but if they keep this one bonus disc deal going, it’ll be 3/23. Of course Dave likes to go fully off piste, for good or for ill, so who knows? Hey, maybe 6/17 will be a Dave’s?
But I like that thought of skipping all the “normal” stuff, which no offense is influenced by outdated taper culture, and dig deeper. I mean shouldn’t the archivist be the one most hip to those kind of shows that perhaps the normal rabble might not be aware of? I think the awesome 69 release last year is a good example.
And as a nut who’s covered a lot of ground the last few years I’m here to tell ya there’s plenty of good off the radar shows. Of course one might argue that obscure shows might not resonate with our normal, less obsessive/knowledgeable cohort?
Yeah, for many reasons, 48 should be interesting if nothing else…

EDIT: poor Dave lol, no mater what he picks we question lol. I mean one might argue 47 was a relatively speaking, lesser known pick, and we, including myself, questioned “why this one versus…” Though I think that was based more on with time possibly running out,, why this and not that…

Oro - yes, if they can't release 2/23/75, the 3/23/75 would be my next choice( only joking).

Danehead - good point - there has been so many great shows from 1972 that any further releases have to be of a very high standard. An average show from 1972 - who would want that? I am half way through Daves 24 - 8/25/72. Another Starless night, when it had been played on other nights in the same run. I wonder why they chose this one?

I will gladly take whatever shows the Dead pack up nice and neatly for me. I want them all good bad ugly!

I hope for anything unique, especially acoustic electric. But since we're talking about it....
1. New Orleans 1980 Acoustic Electric (are the master tapes really MIA? Sigh...)
2. Melk Weg, 80 & Bob's Birthday, etc. Pretty good for borrowed instruments, eh?
As for that Terrapin itch I need to scratch:
3. March 18, 1977 for that Terrapin - It was the only time the Dead played the section believed to be derived of “L’Alhambra. So that version is the closest to the album? (but not necessarily the best live version). 2/22/77 is nice though. On a related note, Will the future remix of Terrapin remove those strings Keith Olsen added? (Olsen's decision reminds me what Phil Specter did to Let It Be).
5. The Electric Myd-i-land Box - Those 5 best remaining 1979 shows (we all know what they are) with a Brent-centric out-takes and rarities bonus disc. Yes, I know. So unlikely. But I can still dream, can't I?
