    The Short Ones

    5-16-72 Lille: Lively, despite sound issues early on. Again every song played well. Energetic, these guys are durable! Classic Truckin' with Jerry going off on it. The TOO seems advanced for '72, short but completely fully developed. Some of this tour's TOOs rival Dark Stars in this regard. Best yet TOO? It's a contender. Hurts Me Too was stellar.

    5-16-72 Luxembourg: Were those first two a sound check? The treatment of Big River I could see as a regular thing but sadly no. Almost starts like the '77 intros to Jack-a-Roe, and Bob gets an interesting part not seen later. Radio broadcast maybe quickened the pace on many 1st set songs? The TOO not nearly up to the level of the other Other Ones. A short and sweet show as I'm finishing the usual NFA> GDTRFB> NFA ending now. How many kinds of radio bandwidths did Europe have back then?

    A shout out to Bluecrow who clued us in on some easy to get to petroglyphs in the front yard of his San Juan River, Utah cave up in the hills. A friend of the devil is a friend of mine. Fantastic stuff and an inspiring place for sure. I'm rejuvenated and ready to cruise through the rest of EU72.

    Good, because I finished the quest on Saturday with a sit down listen to 5/26/72.
    Bad, because everything lately is a blur, so the multiple times I hit 5/24 and 5/25 are now also a blur, so I’ll try to remember some of the standouts?
    5/24: variety pack = Cold Rain and Snow, Dire Wolf, Only Black Peter, You Win Again, Rocking Pneumonia, and Lovelight. Most were good with Win Again and Hurts Me Too making the album cut!
    The second set sequence they do step it up, and I liked the shorter LL, sadly, Pigs last…
    I hadn’t heard this show before so I did hit it multiple times, though didn’t get a great listen in…
    Generally, by now, they’ve totally melded and though perhaps early on in this show you might catch a slightly passed the peak vibe, but not sure hearing it alone, out of sequence and/or casually listening you’d notice. Still mostly full on magnificent.
    Part of my problem deciphering is how much these shows do sound alike, sure their all different and have unique nuances, but after so many in a row, they all sorta roll into one…
    5/25/72: this one seemed like it took a bit to build up from good to RJ…, but certainly did!
    Of course the second set sequence was superb, and benefited from the tour unique UJB> Warf Rat> DS> Mags variety mix. Other Variety pack songs= Another awkward Promised Land, a sweet Brokedown, the aforementioned UJB and Rat, with unfortunately the last Sitting on top (another farewell to that 60s pyscho style/energy), and a sweet Sing Me Back Home! The Dark Star of course was RJ (have you ever heard a 72 DS that wasn’t lol), and a nice slightly different GDTRFB/One Mo Saturday finale. Sadly Pigs last Good Lovin, perhaps a bit abbreviated due to fatigue, and an unusual only four songs on the night…
    5/26/72: some call this the greatest Dead show ever, not sure I’d say that, but it is a beast!
    Only did one listen on this one as I’ve had it, gave it a sit down, and honestly, I’m just burned out. Both in general, which unfortunately didn’t help my tour burnout. But I’ve enjoyed every note, and this one didn’t disappoint either!
    Not so much variety, and sadly, only 3 helpings of grease, perhaps due to some being repeated at least a couple times here at the end: Promised Land, Dire Wolf, nice Cumberland, Sugaree returns after more regular play early on, same with Loser, and of course THE Dew! Another sweet Sing Me, and another OMG second set sequence that is definitely RJ! It’s all most too much, when some shows, they basically play another small set AFTER these big powerful sequences, but here they do it again, though why they had to repeat Me&My Uncle yet again I’m not sure? They just did it a year before on Skullfuck so why use up so many slots on this tour that might have made room for another, possibly THE version of something different to make it to vinyl?
    Anywho, A great show and proper fitting ending to one of the all time greatest tours! They Hit most of the usual suspects of the tour, and even managed to nail some album worthy versions, including that magnificent Dew!
    Oh, and how could I not mention the consistently hot PITBs, everyone RJ fo sho…

    Well, this was bittersweet. I’m glad I finally went for it even if the timing was poor and I didn’t feel I went as deep as I usually do when hitting a tour. But I did hit every show in order, including a few I hadn’t gotten to yet, though I did miss some of 4/7 and 4/8 which I’m going to do this week, perhaps with a couple other partial rehashes, though I really need to hear some other Dead for a much needed cleanse…
    I’ll, prolly think of more insights, but for now I’ll just comment on something I kept thinking of that DR said awhile back about post Pig Dead. After hitting all those amazing but long 73 box shows, then hitting all these amazing but long 72s,
    Pigs departure really did affect the flow and energy of those long shows. As awesome as those 73 shows are, they can sometimes be a bit monotonous, so they definitely miss not having those little Pig interludes to break things up, keep things moving, add more variety, and give an occasional energy boost. It also made me think a lot about what if Pig hadn’t checked out? By this point in their trajectory perhaps the overly long repetitive nature of LL and Good Lovin, and the old, overripe straight blues numbers, maybe needed to take a break, but think of all the sweet alternatives they were coming up with that just shown so brightly on this tour: Hurts Me Too, Mr Charlie, China Town, 2 Souls, and some old chestnuts like Lied Cheated and Big Boss Man. And who can forget the few but enjoyable Cautions, a tour highlight for me personally.
    You have to wonder what if…what if he was healthy and kept writing and growing as a writer etc?
    I think he would have had to have grown as a byproduct of just being in the band and how they kept changing etc.
    He may have transitioned from being the main focus, but there probably would have been some monumental new stuff that might even have been better, but alas we’ll never know…
    Well, hopefully we didn’t lose ole 1stshow in some unknown rural border jail lol, and he’ll fill us in on his travails.

    stMade it to the halfway point, but they started playing 10/18/74 on SiriusXM, so I hit pause. They were out of the gate with a bang. High energy opener with some Healy vocal distortion on Hey Pockey Way. Nice high energy Jack Straw too. I never made it to the Kaiser.. caught news years at the Auditorium, never the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center.

    Man, Jerry's tone on that October 74 run, just love it.

    I'll hit the second set later this afternoon.

    Enjoyed the revisit of 9/18/1987 at MSG Jim. If you ever watch any shows from 1987 you can see Jerry trying to find his form. Looking back I still can't believe how much they toured right after his coma.

    Looking at 11/7/1987 Oakland for today if there is any interest out there.

    Still think we will get a 91 show released soon. Although the talk is 1988 is coming soon.

    Goodbye to the 60's

    In some ways the E72 seems like the last tour that nodded back to the 60's. The Caution jam seems to conjure up the old psychedelic vibe the most. Both Dark Star and The Other One sounded very different from how they had sounded in 1969. An incredible transformation for both songs.
    Although they brought back songs from Aoxomoxoa after 1974, they too had lost the psych vibe by then. As had everything else, come to that.

    Yes that 5-11 show is my new favorite. That just exactly perfect pace and performances on the 1st set matched with the killer 2nd set does it all. Everyone in fine voice and harmonies as well. I knew it was going to be good when the first song was Playin' and the first song of the second set was Dew. This show alone could have filled the EU72 album all by itself and wouldn't have shorted us one bit.

    I can lose my mind, so to speak, in any show from E72, and a whole lot of shows outside that tour over the many years, but that Rotterdam Dark Star > Sugar Mag > Caution > Trucking > Uncle John's will always be one my favorite passages from any show, any era.

    NIIIIICCCCCEEEE! Glad to hear you liked 5/11 1stshow. Yeah not exactly sure why that one always resonates so well for me. I hate “favorites” (like the Jim philosophy: last one heard is the favorite etc) and this tour has so many RJs is damn near impossible for me, but this one always just pops into my head when I think of E72!
    I’m sure the set list is part of it as you mention in why you liked 5/10 etc, and yes, that Dark Star is mos def RJ!

    Though I really dug the 5/18 DS too, hell, who am I kidding, all these DS are top shelf!
    I’ve had this show and have definitely spent time with the DS, but it was nice to dig deeper into the rest!
    Actually got to give this one a good sit down listen on the big boy stereo, always a plus ; )
    Not sure what it was about Germany, but they seemed to step it up each night.
    We get another DS but pared nicely here with a decent Dew. Sing Me as part of double encore was nice.
    Another nice but rare You Win Again, shame they didn’t keep on with that one? oh, a Sitting On Top!
    That was a nice fun addition if not mind blowing.
    A reminder of another thing I’ve noticed on the tour: it’s most definitely not the 60s Dead anymore, but they still have those flashback moments, they can still totally get that vibe and energy, and at times, if it wasn’t for the completely different sound they’ve cultivated, you might think it’s the 60s. (Besides the DS/TOO weirdness!)
    But it’s not, so they throw down more stellar versions of the new stuff and a perhaps light, but satisfying side o grease.

    Ah snap, I skipped 5/16 lol. Well, at this point they are all starting to roll into one, but that becomes helpful when you do hear a particular hot version of something as it seems to stand out enough to distinguish itself from the mob…
    Don’t recall much of that on 5/16, just yet another solid well played beauty. First time for this one so I gave it multiple whirls streaming at work. Certainly they were trying to reign it in a bit and keep it tight being on world radio broadcast, though as the tour rolls on nearer the conclusion, I have noticed a loosening up occasionally and perhaps slightly more imperfections, but that’s really taking a hard micro look as even with occasional blemishes these shows are all so good. Of course they had to get at least a little weirdness out there with another trippy TOO. Wonder what that would have been like: to randomly turn on your radio to THAT! Lol.
    Interestingly, no Good Lovin again, probably due to time restraints, or the fear of Pig getting to spicy on the radio lol.

    Continuing in a haze now with 5/23. I’ve had a copy of this, but it’s missing some tracks and seemed to have songs mixed in from other shows or some weirdness, so I stopped near end of first set and started over streaming. Interesting show as they continue to mix it up and add some new/old stuff in for variety. I didn’t get the best listen in, but it seemed a tiny bit subdued? I don’t know, can’t come up with right word, so I’ll,project. They seem like their relaxing just a bit like they know they’ve got some good stuff in the can so can mix it up and let go a bit? Or not,…? definitely need to hit this again later, but honestly getting burnt not so much on this Dead as not hearing any other eras. Too each their own but I can’t just listen to one kind of Dead exclusively, but that’s just me. But whatever, another great DS/Dew, perhaps a slightly more polished Dew? Oh oh oh, Mr Kotter, can’t forget the best Comes a Time so far, another fun Sittin On Top!,
    They mix it up with a fun Rockin Pneumonia (dedicated to my cousin Eecktar who’s currently laid up in a Hawaiian hospital with pneumonia and Covid as he’s been their working on some recording studio).
    As I say, not the best listen but all good, another enjoyable show!
    Ok, on to 5/24. This has been an elusive one. I remember being a POTD but only could find aud copy so skipped it, actually a couple times, but today we’re soldiering on and gonna finish it. Since I’ve heard so much about this one I’ll probably give it multiple whirls and check it out on Spotify at work (for better audio) for a couple days before I move on to the big 5/25 beast. So that’s where I’ll be for a bit, until next time,
    ONWARD!

    EDIT: Ha who says there’s no Dead heads in this tour! Ya can hear one singing and humming along at points on this 5/24 aud lol so there was at least one, and Murphy’s law he’s standing right near the mics lol

    5-10-72 Amsterdam (+ 5-11 Rotterdam)

    I really liked this one. Part of that may have been a good focused late night listen. Mix was slightly different with more Bob, maybe less Keith? That highlighted by Bob's interesting work in China>Rider too. They attempted to slow the tempo in the Rider part but not everyone caught the drift there. Maybe I liked it for the set list and song order again which I found appealing in more than one of the tour so far. It does seem to be the difference some times in what I perceive as a good show. Highlights: Loser, Big Boss Man, TOO which was extended and very spacey (one part had the cat looking at me like WTF?) in the first go, then a little jazzy Keith, then a lengthy somewhat quiet interlude before >Bobby McGee>TOO again. Maybe the best Sing Me Back Home so far of the tour. And a sweet but shorter Sugar Mag> NFA> GDTRFB> NFA again to end. Again DeadbaseX way off with setlist out of order and missing songs. Not really counting on that being right anymore. Still plugging away with Rotterdam next but may get stalled Mon. - Tue. with a trip to the Four Corners region. Need us some slickrock and petroglyphs before the weather starts turning.

    Edit: 5-11-72 Rotterdam. Jeez- Louise! I can see why Oro said this might be his favorite EU72. The whole 1st set is at that slow, let's get this perfect pace and is another killer set that starts with a Playin' so you know it's going to be good. Then this 2nd set starts with a Dew and is monumental with the best DS so far and one that is now in my top 5 of all time and the 2nd set jammed portion runs like 75 minutes! The final Caution/Who Do You Love is a great way to end that song's run. I googled best show of EU72 and this one came up often and is in the top 3 or 4 in most lists. Just a wowzer.

I can post again. Two, make that three, multi-syllable words. For what it's worth, it's probable some outside firm or contractor did the web site modifications. If so, I bet they were performed exactly as agreed upon and everything was signed off in advance. If so, it cost them money to do it and it will cost them more money to undo or modify it. Poor planning is no way to go through life.

They are playing Nov 1 1979 Pittsburgh on Sat Radio. That one's a keeper

Just read an interesting article about Phil's new project is it called Darkstarathon, I think. The opening tag line is Hey Now, welcome to the Darkstarathon!

For keeping it real and being antidote to what sometimes feels like "corporate" responses and hoops. Not fully gotten over the condition of the discs delivered in my HCS box though since they all played, am thankful for that, getting the music if not the condition paid for. Having half of them arrive with minor scratches and bits of glue stuck to several edges from mindless, careless packaging, have we sent the message clearly enough? I debated asking for replacements, still feel less than satisfied with the response or lack thereof. Have only had one other problem disc in nearly twenty years of DPs, DaPs and box sets.

Actually listening to Kezar this morning from the box. Damn, is it good. Jerry's guitar is so crisp and the overall sound quality still amazes me for this show.

Yes, the manufacturing issues are a bummer. No excuse for that.

Not sure if this is the best forum for this...

...but can anyone help fill me in, or direct me to info, about Record Store Day and how/when dead dot net gets involved? I am asking because the estimable Alvarhanso steered me to 11/18/72. Apparently that was an RSD release in 2014 (or a Black Friday RSD release? That's part of why I need help here) and I've seen blog posts saying it was available for sale "at the Dead's official website". Just wondering if that was true, and if I should pay more attention. I managed to pick up a copy (CD not LP) for sixty bucks but I want to avoid sleeping on this kind of thing in the future. Thanks for any tips

what little I know... others please fill in and correct me. Believe RSD releases vinyl arranged with WMG/Rhino, not ever sold on dead.net. The second set of 11/18/72 was available briefly as a single CD from dead.net years ago, not long after or around the time it came out on vinyl for RSD 2014. It rocks. The first set has never seen daylight on the archive, far as I know, major audio issues. Strongly suggest check out the next night, 11/19, full glory in the archive, a Charlie Miller soundboard AND an excellent Dark Star.

I think you have that exactly correct. Man, I wish they both had all the reels from that Texas run and released it as a mini box. That PITB is an all timer. I can find PITB's I love in almost any era, and I have an affinity for the 73 and 74 spacey monsters, but nothing beats an on fire 1972 Playin' in the Band and that one from Holfheinz Pavilion is real and it's spectacular.

Hope everybody had a happy, fun, and delicious Turkey Day, and a long weekend to kick back.

Lucky to have snagged a copy of the 11/18/72 CD back in the day. It's a beauty. Spinning it now. Dig the artwork, one of my favorites in the Dead archival release genre. Minor technical note. Hofheinz Pavilion is at Univ. of Houston, not TCU which is Ft. Worth. 11/14/71 at TCU was the bonus disc for the Austin road trips. Hopefully 11/19/72 sees the light of day as a formal release.

Right you are... not sure how I came up with TCU and looking at the CD case, it reads Houston, Texas, no mention of Hofheinz Pavilion, though that's the venue. A Bear original recording, mastered by Jeffrey Norman, the disc is marked HDCD but I see no mention of plangent process. Not much information, no booklet in the sleeve cover and the artwork is outstanding indeed.

Decided it was time to revisit that that 11/14/71 TCU disc. NP.

DMCVT - the missing(?) booklet from the 11/18/72 CD release is sort of a puzzle. Can't say for sure but guessing there were liner notes for the LP release (can anyone here confirm?) and that somewhere along the line the corresponding booklet for the CD never materialized and there was a collective shrug by the involved folks. The CD sleeve was certainly designed for one. I'd forgotten about the "missing" booklet until I went to spin it today.

Went Deep Tracks (at least for the BC collection) a couple of days ago with the late November gray and cold rain and listened to Garcia Live Vol. 1 - 03/01/1980 - really hit the spot. And yes, there is a fine Mission in the Rain. Keyboards a bit weird but it was what it was for the era. Jerry's playing is fire.

I have a soft spot for that one. What a great, well written song.

Side trip - Billy and the Kids came up on my BluesTube suggestion list and I just hit it. James Casey just rips it.. I was recently wooed to this guy and just like that he is gone. What a talent and what a loss.

I felt inspired to play this album again, after reading the messages on here. A great album, plenty of upfront Phil in the sound, which is always appreciated.

Bluecrow - there are sleeve notes with the record that aren't included in the cd. An essay by Dave Lemieux from July 2014, in which he suggest that November may be the peak of the peak for 1972. Along with the European tour, Veneta, September and October. Not New Year's Eve, too?

Thanks DaveRock for confirming that there are sleeve notes for the 11/18/72 LP release. Hopefully someday I'll get to read them. And I too really dig how prominent Phil is in the mix.

Jim - Mission in the Rain was a song that took me awhile to come around to. A great song. Went deep cuts in the BC vault again yesterday while working on home improvement project and listened to Pure Jerry Warner Theatre March 18 1978. That late show is stunningly beautiful!! Very emotional. Every song is fantastic. My favorite Mission in the Rain and really pretty much favorite versions for all those songs. And the recording is an absolute gem of a Betty Board. A must own in my opinion.

That was the quite the journey, how this song evolved during 1972. I can't think of any other song that started out so humbly and ended up so expansive within a 12 month period.

Great show! That L > S > D finish to Set I featured in 30 days definitely caught my ear and I followed by going to the Scarlet > Fire to open Set II. Glad you suggested this show cause I intended to listen to the whole thing but it had already been swept on by in the general flow of things. Just 2 weeks after that great little run late Nov. that gave us DaP 8 in Atanta and of course Gainesville. Hadn't realized until going back that Airto Moreira and Flora Purim joined in on drumz > space (their first time, and they're also there the next night.) And there's a To Lay Me Down Set I. Good stuff!!

Bookmarking something completely different: 11/28/73 - Palace of Fine Arts, SF, CA - Jerry, Mickey, Ned Lagin, Phil. Some serious early live Seastone weirdness that in a way sounds much more like a precursor of Space than Seastones ca. 1974. I saw a photo of a fairly well-known poster for this show and a light bulb went on - wait, Jerry and Mickey? in 1973? what in the heck is this?

I picked the wrong one on 30 Days instead of the next Sailor>Saint>Deal on 12-13-80 but went back to catch the set opening Scarlet>Fire at someone's suggestion on 30 Days. A good era for sure. Will have to join in the fun today and maybe add Gainsville which I've never heard but certainly have heard of.

Good solid post RCMH 1980 show. Yes, that To Lay Me Down is moving BC. My first exposure to this song was from Reckoning. I think I actually had and still have the LP which was titled For the Faithful. Of course I don't have a player now. Great version here, to tell sweet lies one more time!

...concur with DAVEROCK and his PITB assessment. I decided to stream pitb with headphones from 8 live performances during a 17 month period, and not go beyond the aforementioned 11/18/72: Hofheinz or include 8/27/72: Veneta (which I won’t get into at this time).

why did I venture into this exercise, well, because I stumbled upon Miles Davis Quintet “The Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel 1965 on wiki. Intrigued, I went directly to “Background”, and reading the comments therein how the band members were becoming restless and dissatisfied, and that it had become easy to play together. Interesting I thought, and how’s about that evolution of pitb. To be clear, in no way am I insinuating that the GD were becoming restless and dissatisfied. Also, it helps answer the question surrounding always pushing the envelope, and confirms my magnetic attraction to late ’72, ’73, and early ’74. I’m going to revisit this exercise with a random dozen shows from my electrically charged era in the near future... and 8/21 is my fav out of the 8, based upon overall mix, vocals, fantastic jamming.

Uncle- it's a great song to listen to, outside the context of the shows in which it was performed during the timespan you mention. I don't know that the band were particularly dissatisfied during 1971, but Keith's joining did signal a left turn into previously unchartered territory. There is no evidence, that I have heard, that suggests Playing would have become a jamming vehicle until he joined.

He got his money's worth! The incredible China Rider transistion, smokin Big River, Brokedown, and we're just getting warmed up. Jerry's slide playing inspired in this show, WRS, Row Jimmy. Second set jam transitions all just smooth as silk.
Amazing show.

Here at work, gearing up to deal with multiple gunshot homicide, last day before vacation..........

Boston Music Hall 12/2/1971. Very odd & interesting show. No Truckin', Other One, or Dark Star. Only 1971 show with both Smokestack and Lovelight---both solid versions. Black Peter and a Brokedown. Plus lots of other gooey Grateful Dead goodness!

Lots of high quality copies are out there. Always worth a listen!!

Music is the best means we have of digesting time......

Off to morgue..................where there is never any Grateful Dead played.........

Been awfully slow here lately.

Driving home today from a quick errand and the Porsche Cayenne in front of me on the exit ramp had a personalized license plate that Said Hey Now! With some sort of Dead symbol between the Hey and the Now. You can't make it up. I thought about trying to communicate with the driver but then realized he might think I was a stalker.

Yes, rockers, once again it is the anniversary of one of the greatest, weirdest, most bootlegged, and most interesting Grateful Dead shows of 1971----Felt Forum, December 5 1971.

The whole story is too long to tell here, but enlighten yourself with a listen, there are some very good copies of the matrix-like FM broadcast out there. It has pretty much everything you'd expect of a Dead show at that time.

Yet even after all these years, questions remain.................

1) I Wash My Hands In Muddy Water. This very country tune was pretty popular around 64-66, and Elvis himself put out a version in early 1971. How did it come to Garcia's attention and why was it only a one-off? Truthfully, the Dead's version sounds well rehearsed and is a neat little gem.

2) The vocal-less, so called "silent Dark Star". No words! What prompted that? However it came about, it's cool............

3) Every show in December was recorded, several have been released. Where is the pure soundboard copy of this show? Has it finally been returned to the band? One can only hope.................

4) Who was Uncle Sal???

The idea of music is to liberate the listener and lead him to a frame where he feels he is elevated.......

Doc how'd it go with that one? Forensic pathology seems not only useful to society at large but also a very thought-provoking way to spend one's time.

bc 12/5/71 never gets old for me. I think the recording is a factor - I often wonder, if this one came out on Dave's Vol 22, would it have the same almost tangible electricity? Is there something about the mind filling in the gaps a bit, and positing improvements - that perhaps, things could be even more intense if only the signal to noise ratio was improved in our favour; if the room's reverb were lessened; if some Plangent sauce was applied? Sometimes I think I shade 12/5 with the tint of yesterday, because I heard it so many times before I ever heard 12/6 or 7. I've probably listened to 12/5 at least a dozen times since Dave's 22 came out, yet in the same span I've probably played Vol 22 three times through at most. I'd put that down to habit and familiarity. I had planned to listen to 12/5 tonight but maybe I should grab that Dave's and give it another really good listen instead...

Multiple gunshot cases are the most challenging, akin to an autopsy marathon. You can't start out sprinting, instead, start out easy and finish strong. Takes planning, determination, and perseverance. Easy to find the injuries, sometimes much harder to find the "evidence"----bullets and fragments. You never want to bury lead................

Ah yes, one should not bury the lede. Neither the lead. Thanks for those observations, doc... gave me a lot to mull over this morning. A marathon... yes.

I ended taking my own advice (er... suggestion) and putting on 12/6/71 last night. I had some observations typed up but now I can't recall if I actually posted them... I was interrupted by my good wife during Wharf Rat, which seemed a reasonable time to look up from my brown study. I had been absolutely entranced starting with PITB, short but getting longer as '71 progressed. And that Other One... my word... just excellent. In my observations I remember thinking how impressed I was with Keith, and how accomplished he was just a mere few weeks into playing live with these guys... leaving space, a lot of space, but when coming in, his feel and expression on the keys was never tentative but consistently assured. No wonder Phil makes that comment (at the Academy of Music a few months later? I forget) about "our new keyboardist... well, actually, he's our old keyboardist; we just didn't know it yet"

Been listening to that glorious MSG Box again lately. Haven't listened to 10/11/83 more than once so need to get that show rolling again.
