We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. iTunes, music files

I have a 60 GB iPod classic and use iTunes to manage the iPod. But the music on the iPod is 256 k AAC which gives 128k per channel, so it still sounds pretty good. The iPod is really only for traveling, such as an airplane (before iPods I used a Sony Walkman CD player and carried around 20-25 CD's). At 256k I can fit all my commercial GD CD's at this time, but will need to delete some to put the May '77 TOO Box on it. So when traveling I have a lot to choose from.I don't store any music on my phone, and don't stream. I am going to buy a Fiio in the future, but not until there's a model that takes dual 512 GB cards. iTunes should never be used as the main storage method of your digital music, that should be done on HD's with multiple backups. Copies of those files can then be imported into iTunes or another media player. I still burn CD-R's of all the torrent FLAC/SHN files I process (this is an ongoing multi year effort to have all available GD SBD's) and listen to the CD-R on my stereo and use this to confirm that the AIFF file on the HD does not have any flaws. In addition to the AIFF file and the CD-R optical storage copy, I make FLAC, ALAC, and AAC copies, each on a separate HD and with backups on other HD's, and in the future I'm going to burn the data files to bluray data discs (25 GB) for added security (a large music collection can make one appear paranoid and odd to the outside observer). This also explains Jim's issue with HD's multiplying like rabbits. I have a similar situation. Can't afford to lose anything, it will take too long to replace. I have always used Macs for processing music files and burning CD's/DVD's/blurays and the Macs have never let me down. Toast software does everything I need except decode SHN files (xACT will do that). There are still SHN files on the torrent sites but most files are now FLAC. I decode the FLAC/SHN files to AIFF, change the file names to my system, and store those as the masters. I then make CD-R's and FLAC, ALAC, and AAC copies. I figure that those should serve me well in the future, especially when I have a car with a FLAC or ALAC player and a hard drive built into the dash board. And my future Fiio player will be loaded with 512 x 2 GB of GOGD. In my current car I have 600 CD-R copies of my collection, but new cars often don't come with CD players, so I'm planning ahead.

Road Trips '73

There's a stretch that goes: Here Cones Sunshine Big River Broke down Palace Weather Report Suite Mississippi Half-Step Playing in the Band El Paso Playing in the Band, Pt.II Wharf Rat Playing in the Band, Pt.III Morning Dew This is some of the best 73 stuff out there. Playing II sounds like Dark Star. And then you have Disc 3 Truckin' Nobody's Fault Going Down The Road One More Saturday Uncle John's Band Then come bonus tracks from the previous night, and this is not to be overlooked. My buddy UG recommended this next trio, and he knows his Dead: Truckin' The Other One Stella Blue (which is no slouch) I can see what the hoopla is all about. And then there's the bonus disc - totally sick: Greatest Story China Rider Dark Star (40+ min) Eyes of the World (14 min) What a release. But really catch that Triple Playing with the Wharf Rat.

Agree with all said. I too started with LP, 8 track, cassette, CD, SACD, Blu ray audio, then went digital to MP3, ALAC, FLAC and now am hooked on DSD. Very expensive hobby, takes up a lot hard drive space, but with the proper equipment, speakers and a decent DAC, I feel like I did back in the day with good vinyl. This searching for the sound obsession isn't cheap, I am now on my second 5 TB USB3 external drive. If you have the chance to hear Miles Davis' Kind Of Blue in HD DSD, do so....I can't go back....I'm hooked.

Sound quality / formats....MP3, CD, 180g, 192/24

I understand people’s gripes with Apple, sort of. I live in the Apple ecosystem: Mac, iphone, apple watch, apple TV, etc. The weather is quite nice in here. However, I do not use Itunes anymore. The one part of the ecosystem that grabbed me and pulled me in, I no longer use. A little more than a decade ago a buddy set me up with a 30k song music collection to get me started. Multiple genres assembled from napster and a few people ripping cds into MP3s. Soon I was able to add heaps of soundboard MP3s right from the archive. Can’t anymore. I missed out of downloading the higher (CD)quality soundboards by about a year, but I was happy with the MP3s. Ecstatic to be honest. I too snapped up a 160g Ipod and loaded it up. Life was great. But my ear was developing a more sophisticated understanding and thirst for better sound quality. CD’s sound better compared to MP3s all things equal. Overtime I moved to CDs. Life was great, plenty of GD releases, and some catching up to do. Fun, fun, fun, until Daddy saw what people were asking for GD CDs on ebays. Then a bombed dropped on me. The TOO box set released a high res version for download. CD’s are compressed to 44/16, with exception SACD etc. The high res download was 192/24, and not cheap. I took the plunge. I even upgraded my interweb connection to download the large files. I ran the pepsi challenge with the physical CD from the marvelous box set side by side with the high res download. Done. And done. CD’s sound fantastic. I will continue to enjoy and build my collection. But the high res downloads absolutely melt me. It’s a skull F, especially with a decent pair of cans on. Though, the 180g Normanized vinyl is super buttery smooth, warm and can give the high res download a run for its money. Here I was moving away from digital music, and now I moving back, with the exception of LPs. This time around I am not using itunes. I prefer a VLC player. I use a pono player for on the go. Workouts get the iphone streaming music, but with thirty dollar sennheiser ear buds. The white headphones that come with ipods, iphones aren’t worth the cheap material they are made out of. Way side note: I know it’s been talked about here previously regarding a Grateful Dead March Maddness style bracket. All of the ideas are wonderful, and there are tons of ways to set it up. I think it can also be set up as sweet 16 bracket and use shows from colleges and universities. William and Mary, CAL, Princeton, Duke, come to mind, and I know there are more shows out there. I have a set of open backed Sennheiser headphones too. I love them, They are great in my laptop or stereo. I had Grados before, but wore out Grados before these, they have an awesome sound though. They were the cheapest Grados, the IGrados, which are only $49.95, but the sound is awesome.

Check and Call Rhino

I checked again today and rhino is advertising the get shown the light box for sale. do not take my word for it double check with a phone call to rhino and understand there could be some risk. but the way it looks rhino is selling the remaining boxes. no purple banner that says all music edition. question for those who got AME what does you order say. does it say all music edition or get shown the light. the orders that are getting limited box says get shown the light on the order. That is what is says on the rhino site today. anyway. "take it if you need it or leave it if you dare."

i've seen two of your posts in one weekcomplaining about someone's negative comments-guess what, when someone has an opinion that is not aligned with your thoughts,even if it's about someone setting a price for something they selling or the band is slop before pigpen.its gonna be negative.it's their prerogative to say it's not worth it or no thanks.i think it's your emotional immaturity to anything negative or something you don't agree with.you could have left it to-"that's your opinion and i don't agree."instead you feel it's necessary to put someone down.earth without rain is a desert.

Pauses between tracks?

Hi all, A technical issue I'm hoping to resolve: Recently ordered this set, promptly downloaded the CDs to my iTunes collection. Getting 1-2 second pauses between most of the tracks which disturbs the flow of the music. Does anyone know what might be causing this, and how to fix it? Gareth

It’s most likely caused by a setting in iTunes. Go into the iTunes preferences and see what is listed for import settings, as well as for playback settings.If you still can’t fix it then google it, there should be instructions somewhere.

Recommendations for a Newly Grateful Deadhead?

Newly Grateful Recommendations

You know, Gareth, it really comes down to what you like about the Dead... When I put in the Dead, I rarely want to listen to songs, so to speak. I tend to go for the long, inspired jams. For this, I would suggest the Winterland 1973 boxed set as No. 1, so far... though in general, shows from the 1973-1974 will be your best bet for this... That said, there are gems of shows throughout the years, though I've never personally been impressed by anything later than 1977. May 1977: Get Shown the Light (All Music Edition) is a great collection from this year. I also really love One from the Vault, Sunshine Daydream, & Dick's Picks, Vol. 14... The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack is an all-too-looked-over gem, too. Finally, if you can afford it, I'd recommend getting a copy of the Pacific NW '73-'74 boxed set while it's still available on this site. When these sell out on dead.net, they price-inflate like crazy to 2x their original cost or more.

Get Shown the Light, the box with the book, was limited to 15,000 copies, I read somewhere.But I can’t find anything on the All Music Edition that’s still available. Can somebody tell me how many of those were printed?

Best digital format?

So, I'm totally showing my newbie-ness, but when the formats are digital, which is the best to download? I'm thinking about uploading to iphone for maximum bluetoothing. Also, is the first selection a CD collection of the four shows? I didn't see it listed behind the All Music Edition, so I figured it must be sold out.

16/44.1 is CD format, so you could convert to WAV or AIFF on a computer and burn CDs if you wanted to, as well as have the digital file on a music player.

The higher resolution files are for a computer or music player. If you wanted to burn CDs from those files you would lose the higher resolution that you paid more for.

I downloaded the ALAC of this digital download but when I import into iTunes it is not recognizing the artist or songs and not creating an album. For the same ALAC download for Pacific Northwest ’73-’74: The Complete Recordings Boxed Set it worked perfectly in iTunes. Why does this download now import correctly? Thanks if anyone knows or can help.

May 1977: Get Shown The Light (All Music Edition)

Since they sold out of the regular box set with all the bells and whistles, and had a huge demand, Dead.Net is selling an All Music Edition that "...only includes the 11 CDs in four folios and a booklet of liners, housed in a simple slipcase."

So, still the four shows, just without the special packaging and the unpublished book. This time, the order went through. Nothing on the website about this also being a limited release -- it's not numbered, but they don't specify if it's another set amount.

Excellent news ! I wonder if they will re-release other box sets in this format that originally sold out. Fillmore West 1969 is the one I sadly missed out on and would shell out for in a heartbeat.

Does somebody have problems with tracking number?

I've purchased the fantastic Lyceum LPs more than a month ago and still nothing arrived.
I've searched for the tracking number done by the GD store on the DHL site but nothing appears.
I've yet written to the customer helpdesk, but I'm curious if somebody encountered my same problem.

Just to state the obvious, they are indeed fantastic records. I am half way through 5/25/72 at the moment - one that no-one really mentions. Probably because of the night after, which is a shame as it's a great show in it's own right. Curious "Good Lovin" - 14min 53 seconds, and no Pigpen rap - he just sings the opening the verses and the closing ones some 12 minutes later. In between we have spot on r'n'b jamming like no-one else.
