All over the place

That sounds like a pretty good description of me when The Dead came to Wembley in 1990 ! I was lucky to catch all three shows, and of those the one I enjoyed the most was the first - 10/30/90. I went on my own and didn't ingest anything stronger than a couple of pints - maybe that helped.
It was an amazing scene to me outside the stadium, with all the vendors selling their wares. Inside was great too, milling around. I was right near the front in the stalls - after all these years of listening to The Dead and reading about them- there they were, in person , within shouting distance. Songs which stood out were Row Jimmy Row ( not a song I like at home), Built to Last - which had a lot more substance than the recorded version, and Black Peter - quite something seeing Jerry sing this close up.
It was a buzz when they started up Lovelight, too. I had probably never heard a version of this post Pigpen, so the mere fact of them playing something off Live Dead was reward in itself. Weird phone calls seemed to come out of the amps during this song. They are transcribed in the Taping Compendium, which was quite re-assuring to read. Proof I hadn't imagined it!

The following night I was joined by Lady Macbeth, as my dad called my girlfriend, and trouble followed. We arrived as they were playing H-S-F, and they seemed to have more energy than the previous night. But we left after the first set. The third night I was back on my tod, and decided to take some mushrooms. And got lost on the way there due to one of the tube stations being closed. I still arrived on time, but I started tripping on the London underground which was a bit...challenging. I was up in the balcony this night, to the right of the stage. The sound was really bad - what I heard was anyway. The piano sounded too loud and the guitars too quiet. The highlight of this night was Space- Drums.

I agree that, of the shows I have heard from this tour, the one released in 30 Trips - Paris 10/27/90 - is the best. Playing now as I type.

Set II, begins "in the pouring rain", only Autzen night show(?) or was it an afternoon show on a Friday which is why I couldn't make it down from Seattle? Anyhoo, sure wish I'd been there - saw the 2 shows in Seattle before and then the 2 Autzen shows after this (last time they played there).

Rain > Eyes > Samba > Saint > D/S > Wheel > Attics > Throwing > Not Fade Away

I am listening to 10/31/90 in the car over several days

Poor Jerry's voice

but again

I don't listen to GD for the vocals

took a chance and played Scarlet Fire from 3/10/81 for my son last night and emphasized the peak toward the end of Fire

he appreciates the musicianship and respects the GD
I consider that a win

Wow, the three Wembley shows were all over the place!
The first on the 30th was tour status quo goodness! Though I still think Paris was top dog, and Mr David picked well with 10/27.
The 31 starts out awesome, but somewhere in the first set Jers voice suddenly goes rogue, which is a shame because the show is well played otherwise with many highlights, including a fun encore.

11/1/90 I’d heard/had at least the second but it’s been awhile.
The Playin Sammy/sequence is awesome! Victum was good, Touch ok, but consistency wise, much of this show was all over the place, including a couple near train wrecks i.e., U.S, Blew…
Interesting tour. Might as well keep Truckin’ on…12/3/90

Edit: S-W-B: can you imagine if he had the same PA, Modulus Bass, PIE Amps, Meyers 18’s and 15’s, and rack in 68 as he had when you were there!

To think of the folks being plastered back into those lower stone seats as he thundered along on the Eleven & Caution!
Bless you Phil (and the boys) for all the fun you gave us for all those years. I was lucky enough to be able to experience that exact Greek sensation just once - an indelibly (psychedelically) imprinted version of the Other One at the final GD Greek Theatre show - August 1989.

Both good, thought first show was better. Loved the Bruce Jam in the first, and sweet spacey Dark Star, though perhaps not JGs best version. In fact I’m digging these shows a lot, but Jer occasionally seems? Every now and then he kinda drifts? Hard to describe, just something..is..? Maybe just me?
Fun if not great Valley Road, nice SOTM, and that Stella might just be the best thing I’ve heard on the tour so far, amazing Stella on the 22!

Red Rocks 87 and Videos

I also enjoyed the shows at Red Rocks 87. Does anyone else recall seeing b&w video monitors on the mixing board all 3 nights? (In addition to the unofficial version already available online). I suspect there is a lot more 87 video too, judging from what was officially released during that era.

Related note, I like meet up at the movies, and would even enjoy seeing compiled short bits of older video with intros and history from GD folks. Ive been visiting "Wolfgang's Dead" Youtoop channel lately. There is so much more than I ever knew. So, If they release it, I will buy it..

Have you ever heard of the site called heady version (all one word)? It's a deadhead generated ranking of all the Grateful Dead's catalogue. According to the site, it lists the top 3 versions as: 2-26-77, 5-17-77 and 1-22-78.

-edit- Looks like Terrapin from 10-22-83 gets some high ratings from the 80's.

CD by Martin Taylor and David Grisman's Acoustic Jazz Quartet, called "I'm Beginning to See the Light.," 1999.

Taylor and Grisman go at a bunch of true standards (Autumn Leaves, Cheek to Cheek, Lover Man, Willow Weep for Me, Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered...etc.) It is good because it does focus Grisman a little, like Garcia used to do, and bring David down from his free form "Dawg" jamming. It's nice, like at a Dead concert, when the riffing resolves into a recognizable song and melody. On the other hand, maybe you can say that Grisman is excessively disciplined and sticks too closely to the melody here rather than riffing and improvising as much as many jazz players do - could have been a happy medium with his Dawg somehow - maybe he felt a little more free to do that in his collaborations with Jerry. But this is good. Great music for dinner or reading and you raise your head every once in awhile at a nice riff or return to well known swing melodies. And danceable if you know your Lindy. That's probably what was intended. Jerry would have appreciated it, I think - Jerry himself in his last interviews said he was going to see Steffan Grappelli doing this sort of riffing on standards before both of them unfortunately passed on. And of course Jerry was named after Jerome Kern, or so I heard once upon a time, so these standard would be right up his alley.

Currently listening to and learning Deep Elem Blues ... i noticed there are 2 dominant versions, live at harpur College version, which is a slowed down real bluesy version, and then the more classic and common "bluegrass" version as heard in the acoustic and JGB shows...

wondering if anyone knows what these two styles are called in the dead/music world, as I'm trying to learn the Harpur College version and having trouble searching for lessons on that specifically that version ("real bluesy version" and "harpur college version" isn't working in the searches)

This is one of those shows where we're so very lucky to have the tape that we have. Mike Tannenbaum's recording gear was supposedly concealed inside a wheelchair. Once your ear gets used to the recording quality, though, this show has some ferocious passages that are absolutely worth hearing. I come back to the Cryptical->Other One->Cryptical->Sugar Mag time and time again. Garcia is just a demon dancing across Other One. And the Sugar Mag... a song that would go on to be played hundreds of times, but here has barely been done a dozen... Garcia's solo is effortlessly rockin' right out of the gate, just so assured. And beautiful harmonies from the boys.

Divine Symmetry

A great box set of David Bowie's demo and live recordings from 1971, leading up to the release of Hunky Dory. It's surprising how tentative he seemed performing live at this time. Come the beginning of 1972, an inspired make over and change of outlook - hey presto - Ziggy played guitar. This box set is really good, charting the path from nowhere's ville to the stars.

Spirit of the Golden Juice

This has to be the most random bit of folk/singer-songwriter material I have ever stumbled into. The artist is someone I'd never heard of: F.J. McMahon.

McMahon's album, "Spirit of the Golden Juice", had a limited pressing in 1969 and McMahon tried touring to support it, even eventually doing the tourist circuit in Hawaii, but the album got no play. He finally found himself uninspired by playing covers, so he joined the navy and soon forgot all about playing music for a living. (I tried to say more but it was at this point that I got hey now'd)

the Cleveland 12/4/73 show ( I was tryna say more but something kept getting me hey now'd) <sigh>

Wow, what got into Phil Lesh that night!? Somewhere I read that he was ticked off with the promoters and that's part of the reason set II is short. I wonder if Phil was trying to bring the ceiling down on those miscreants. Whatever his motivations were, it's just marvelous the things he does with his bass. He just takes over on Eyes and drives things into one ferociously weird bit of feedback. And that Stella Blue, too...he's playing behind Garcia instead of being way out in front, and yet Phil just goes thundering along. Intense. I've spent the last 90 minutes just grooving to Phil and replaying those two songs. Good stuff!!
