10/19/89, it has a Cumberland!

My 75th show picks up Rockin’ right where they left off the previous night, like a luge outta the gate, rattling around on the track, potentially out of control, through the first turns of Bucket, and a tad smoother into West LA, but eventually settle in and their here to play! After Bob? has to mess with shit, thearby taking the proverbial wind outta the sails, but eventually they come back with a good Victim, though it’s interesting to note this and Blow Away on this tour are more truncated versions. In the case of Blow Away that’s probably good as I think the extended rant versions could get stale if done all the time. Victim on the other hand would grow into a ridiculous auditory beast especially on the spring 90 tour and with the use of the surround speakers. Perhaps my personal fav is the one from Hamilton which unfortunately being a stereo recording does not let you experience the amazing weirdness we enjoyed on the floor that night!
Then, yes indeedy it does have a Cumberland! Followed by a spacey Cassidy>>Dough Knees.
But the biggest highlights of this show, and perhaps the run, come in the second set.
Only the Third Help-Slip-Franks since 9/12/85, and a fine showing they were. Next a status quo Estimated/Eyes, but I want to say I think I remember some nice midi weirdness in Estimated? Or maybe I’m mixing up my shows?
Onward through the weirdness zone, with gentle reintegration via The Wheel, which slides nicely into Mr Fantasy/Hey Jude Finale, only the second of two on the tour, which means wait for it....that’s right we’re getting a Death Don’t, the second of only two on the tour, and only the third since 4/26/70, and what a experience, get bumps just thinking bout it. Perhaps my fav of the three, but I need to line em up back to back...
Lovelight is a nice choice to finish/follow the big dog, and a always welcome Baby Blue encore, cept this time we might of been disappointed hoping for an Attics, but expecting at least a We Bid Thee Goodnight! Keep em wanting more eh!
This one definitely needs to come out in some form.

Phewwww, it’s crazy how fast you can fall behind, but dagnammit I started this tour and I’m gonna finish.
So anniversary schedule is out the window but that’s ok cause I’ve been marinating in these shows to try recapture some of that old school familiarity like back in the day when you’d only get a few tapes now and then so you’d play nothing but until you knew em inside out...so several plays on the pad only at work, but had some nice proper listens at home this weekend. Overall there a little chameleon like, much like most of this tour. One day something doesn’t sit right, but the next time time you listen your going, ohhhh. Most 89, but not quite spring 90 tight, including the midi, but then outta nowhere some weird hiccup, or ruff spot. Bob especially seems to have some “moments” on this tour, mostly small and/or subtle, he’s playing great and he's dialing in the raunch nicely (think it started going too far later in the 90s?) but somethings just a tad off now and again? Perhaps this is why he uses tapes and gives cudos to summer tour versus fall more often?
But it’s the kind of thing you wouldn’t really notice unless your doing the whole tour like this...and it’s kinda nit picking.

So, 10/18. Opens with the only Shakedown of the tour, and though HENDRIXFREAK and I won’t be goofing around about GOAT anytime soon, its still a nice opener and a nice treat on this tour. Like much of this time span, it starts kinda relaxed, low key, and on its on time, but once the cobwebs come off it’s decent. Other highlights include a Peggy O just for Jimmy, a spacey Birdsong into a decent Music Never. Perhaps a short but sweet first set and a good first night of multi night run show. Back with an upbeat China/Rider Jers rippin. Nice Ship of Fools followed by a 89 style Women Are, and a Terrapin that spaces out into the awesome weirdness zone, formerly know simply as drums/space, with more of the psychedelic majesty, even if it is electronically induced versus chemical!
But they come Rockin’ outta there with the 1-2 punch of Gimme Sum>>Watchtower, with JG keeping it real with a sweet Black Pete, with Bob bringing it home with rocking A&A/Good Lovin’, with an upbeat US Blues Encore to suggest more to come manana.
Nice run opener with any signs of 10/16 hangover gone like an afternoon hair o the dog! Nice show, definitely some kind of release worthy?

GOGD: as always thanks for the crack detective work. Quite a scene...I’ve heard Phil be Phil and heckle folks, but that was out right venom. “There is nothing like a GD concert” hee-hee. Can’t believe I’ve never heard about this one?

JIM: yes agree, according to the charts were over due for both Dave’s and a box for 1972, and were overdue for a 78 Dave’s, but obviously that’s changed. Still wonder about a early 78 box cause ya know those ABCD Beatty’s are getting released someway sometime, and he has been rooting in there. Guessing too close on the heals of the summer 78 box, but after the knuckle balls he’s chucked this year anything is possible, which is great!
Boy wouldn’t that be great if there was more quality stuff from fall 80, hell any 80 would be sweet, another black hole of underrepresentation! I’ve always felt like it doesn’t add up that ALL the tapes, especially quality multi-tracks could totally disappear? Sumthin don’t smell right? So hope your right! I know Deadvikes wouldn’t be the only one happy about that! Honestly, I think I’d rather have a cherry picked mid sized box than a comprehensive boxilla of all the shows. I know that’s sort of blasphemy, but practically speaking it might make sense...hopefully there’s somethin...

1973 Met Center, Next Box

Crazy stuff at the Met Center. Maybe that is why they didn't come back to that venue until the late 1980s.

1980 you say Jim?? I am in of course. Hard to know what they will do next year and of course when it will be released. If it is a fall release, it will be something like 18 months between box set releases. Too long for this guy. One thing is for sure, they keep us guessing.

Like Oroborous said, we have those great years that are lost in space! So true. 80,81 and I will add 79 to that list as well. I think there is some great shows in that year.

Yes and I would love the 74 Winterland Box Conekid, that would be a break the website release.

The piece of film that I have is the very beginning of OMSN. What I thought looked like a crew member doing a repair on stage is actually a camera man.

It’s been a while since I’ve watched the movie. Makes me really want the entire run to be released in a Box with audio and video.

Thanks Oro.. this seems to indicate the series is more balanced than a lot of people seem to acknowledge.

As for box, call me crazy, but I am speculating 72 or 80. My logic on 1980 is pure speculation. If they had some hidden reels (and there's a part of me that thinks they must), the certainly would not tell us. Perhaps when they were seeing what if anything was releasable.. while rummaging around the found a couple shows to be released as spin-offs giving us 10/8 and 10/9. Which gives them time to go through the good stuff and plan out a box set a couple years later. 1972, do we need a reason? Thinking the Fox Theatre St. Louis or the rest of the BCT's (if they have them). 69 will always be a wild card. Ark Ark.

So there's some good comments on Archive.org in regards to this, but the following eyewitness review seems to shed the most light:

What really sucked was that this show was advertised as "The Grateful Dead Performing 3 Sets". Casey Jones was the first song of Set 3. The fight was ugly - several security dudes beating on one guy who was dancing in the aisle right in front of the stage, even Bill K. jumped off the stage to help break things up and security started pounding on Bill, that's what Phil is so upset about. The melee ended soon after. By then, Jerry and Phil were both sitting on the stage floor - everyone seeming quite upset by this sudden change of weird energy and bad vibe. The band had several discussions - you could see that they were at serious odds about whether they should continue with the plan and do a third set. After all, the first two sets were well played, creative and joyful. When they finally tried to play Saturday Night, you could tell their hearts and minds were no longer into continuing this night. Too bad for all of us. Those security punks must have left their 'Minnesota Nice' at the door or when they donned their uniforms.

So Billy K jumped down into the melee, following in the footsteps of Marty Balin circa 1969. It sounds like Billy faired a little better and it was Security Guards instead of Pool Cue wielding Hell's Angels.

Fascinating. It makes you wonder what could have been during Set 3. I was under the assumption it was an encore, but shit.. that coulda been a Dark Star or something amazing.

Wang Dang Soundcheck started circulating online in mid 2008 when Charlie Miller posted his Transfer of SBD > Master Reel > Dat. Outside of an Official Release, it doesn't get any better than that.

Speaking of Official Releases (nice segue huh? I like transitions)... Man this 5/26/72 is sooooo goood.
Set 1 is essentially a Full Show.
And then... you get some of the greatest music they ever played.
Pigpen's organ fills during Europe '72 are the cherry on top, he's got the tastiest licks imho.
I've always liked his sense of when to lay back and when to add color.
Really enjoying this Truckin' boy howdy, I see what those folks in Turlock were excited about.

Woah, don’t think I’ve ever heard anything like that at a dead show before. At first I though someone must of chucked a bottle or something. Can’t believe I’ve never read about this before?
WANG DANG: weird, not listed in either a Deadbase 10 or 50? Neither is OMSM? Sounds like a job for inspector Good Old....I’m wondering since they obviously don’t really know it if it was an off the cuff reaction to the fighting, I mean it is the perfect song for it lol.
Great show though, just your typical fall 73, yawn, NOT! Hadn’t heard this one before. Probably cause no DS? Do Love those Trucking/Nobody sequences though. Man what a great tour! Still haven’t gotten to 10/19, just haven’t had time for real sit down in the big boy chair, and that show requires nothing less!
Been enjoying the picks this week although only on iPad at job site. Tis why I’ve had to delay my fall 89 excursion...did listen to the three Philly shows a bunch on the pad, but didn’t get time for them on the big system until last night. After 10/23/73, and most of 10/18/89 on the pad at work, did 10/18&19/89 last night under proper conditions and yeah, still think Philly was a great run. More on that later. Have to make the best of probably the last nice day this year as it’s supposed to snow and drop from high sixties today to lows near zero by Monday, Booooo!
One thing I don’t like here, going from extremes with no acclimation time, it’s a horrible shock to the system!
So out to the garage it is. Perfect for 5/26/72 and then perhaps 10/20/89, with proper replay upstairs tonight.

I had just a taste of 2/15/73 as filler back in the day - HCS and El Paso. But that HCS was smoking. Still, I'd more or less forgotten about it until a couple years ago when I read a Latvala quote about how this version of HCS compared well with the one from 12/19. And it just so happened that I had a boring task to do [censored - for some reason I cannot describe my office w/out getting hey now'd] at work. And I wanted a long show to brighten my mood. I thought of HCS and that's when it hit me that I'd never heard the rest of this show.

Wow - it's just so good! I had the entire M aples show back in the day, but I still wasn't prepared for this performance. With all the new material I figured they'd be still working things out, but it feels instead like they must have spent that week rehearsing and listening to each other, and were just in a great headspace. This show just flows.

But this one's not in the vault, is it? (I mean I hope I'm wrong...)

2nd set was one of the first tapes to fall in my lap way back when over 40 years ago. My favorite Here Comes Sunshine - it has a drive to it that I really dig. And Bob's guitar is so exquisitely "wiered" at times, some strange effects peddle? Of course, totally love the Dark Star > Eyes > China Doll. That was an early glimpse into the mystery. And Badass Donna on You Aint Woman Enough. And the merry run around of that sweet sweet TLEO. A tape that was much listened to and much loved, note by note.

Great (or is it Grate?) Dane Box or February '73 box - either one bring it on!

The old Dane County Coliseum. Was there many times, unfortunately not to see the Dead.

I hope we get those early 73 shows out at some point.

It is about the sound system that Owsley and the Dead had and the September to Decembers tours of 73. Newspaper clippings and some interviews. I learned there was supposed to be a December 15th show in Houston. Always wondering why the gap between Omni and Curtis Hixon shows. Youtube..

Recovering Comfortably

Prefer gummies over the prescription stuff they gave me. I finally made it home and it's great to see a couple exciting shows to queue up and lively up my next few days.

all in all I'm doing ok. Lots of shoulder work done and still painful but I'm on the other side now. thanks for all the good thoughts.

2/16 &/17/82 two very cool shows I was fortunate enough to be at , would make a great double release. 2/17/79 was a benefit called Rock for Life and was about ending environmental cancer. Another show I was at and should have been released along time ago.

It seems to me that the more time you spend on a post, the more likely it is to be hey now'd. What seems to be working for me is to just whack one out - and then when it's printed, go back and amend it. If you can be bothered.

was spinning on sirius yesterday. Caught the Eyes>WRS while heading into town.
Everyone is beautifully mixed in. What a recording! Had to check the archive to find out more. Listened to China>Rider to verify the sound quality. Would make a magnificent official release.

Revisited this fantastic show last night and this morning. What a show! Damn, love that 3rd set!. We are a lucky bunch out here.

...yeah man, I'm down with that...that 3rd set has gotten at least 5x the playtime vs. any of the other sets contained in the HCS Box.

Worked-on my 2024 Box Set calculator, and got it installed yesterday lol, estimated release September; now if only I can get it to reveal the contents;)

Spring 84

Have hit everything in order through April 30.
Not fall 73 but better overall than I expected!
Some really good shows there, just they all seem to have the same idiosyncrasies. Mainly, misses. Not really any big train wrecks, though JG flubs Althea pretty good on the 30th.

Several times I’d be thinking, this is the show, then they’d have some little miss or Jers voice might be a bit ruff on one song. Just weird random stuff that I’d call normal, except here it just seems like every now and then, from time to time, ?? Hard to explain, perhaps I.e., check out all the HSF as an example?
The tape selection/quality is inconsistent too. I heard several less than stellar SBs, and some awesome Auds, and everything in between.
The first night of Marin sounded like practice, but was a creeper. Ist set sloppy, but eventually got some things going. Awesome Oh Babe it ain’t no lie!
The run seemed to get better as she goes. Again, kinda sounded overall like a tour warm up run… Do try to hear the Blues for Allah hints during the 3/31 space! And the Spanish jam through Rat on the 29th.

Ist night of Vegas was meh, second ok.
The tour proper starts in Hampton. First night sorta status quo for opener, nothing really stuck out. Second night I enjoyed and sounded like they were finally gelling.
CROTCHFESTER. I was at, front row, perhaps highest we ever got, so no surprise I didn’t remember much. I do recall feeling non plussed BITD but I think that’s because I had some song expectations that didn’t pan out? Always seemed overshadowed by NF the next night (same mo for us).
This time, I did dig NF as they jam hard and things can be very psychedelic musically at times, but this time Rochester really stood out for me. One of my favorite shows of the tour, definitely worth a listen!
I’ll skip Philly for now…
New Haven I liked the first night better, great Jack Straw, only Only a Fool ever played, which was meh?, nteresting anyway, nice Spanish jam and space.
Really all the drums out into space etc we’re cool on this tour.
Both Providence shows were solid. Decent Shakedown, but I’ll take the powerful Angry Shakedown from 4/16 over em all.
The second night of P town is another I recommend and another tour tops!
Nassau shows were good, but perhaps a little on the downside by this point?
Philly probably was the peak, but I didn’t feel it was obvious.
I listened to some of these shows several times trying to decide.
I remember feeling DL had gone to the wrong house with 35 being 4/20?
I still think the 21st might be a tad better, but perhaps missing a bit on HSF (they don’t quite get any of em perfect) factored in?
The 19 is ok, sorta tour status quo, 20 and 21 are definitely in the top five.
So I’d recommend not necessarily in order because these shows were all very similar in many ways, so can’t pick a definitive favorite.
4/21, 4/20, 4/16, 4/27 tops, extra credit 4/17, 4/26, 4/14.
Again, really pleasantly surprised at the overall quality and consistency of the tour. Yes if you pay attention you’ll hear some Oopsies occasionally, but perhaps no more than most tours?
Going to cleanse a bit, then hit some more spring 89…

How did you get your post past the HN police OB! Nice work. The longest one I have seen in a while.
I haven't listened to much spring 84 in long time, with the exception of Dave's #35, which I always enjoy. There have been a lot of Philly shows released by Dave. Will have to poke around a bit.

The first night of Marin...

...yeah Oro, that was a strange night... and with the home crowd and the technical gremlins, it really does kinda sound like practice at times.

But that second set has a lot of mojo. The Oh Babe is a lovely one-off - first time since '81 and the last time the GD would play it onstage. The China Cat->Rider is remarkable, I just love the color Brent puts on it. They take their time with it, too; it's nearly 15 minutes long. The Playin' gets to some haunting spaces, and it's too bad Garcia wasn't a lil more patient bc I'd have loved to see what else might have happened, but I guess he had business backstage. Instead we get the debut of Don't Need Love. Again, it sounds almost like rehearsal, but it's still my fav of the 16 times Brent would eventually play it. I love this version.

Drums doesn't really go anywhere for me, but Space is excellent (Garcia must have found what he needed backstage, Weir's a monster here and Phil is so high on Jill in '84 that he seems to be livin up to his old nickname, Reddy Kilowatt) with a notable jam. And the transition into the Wheel never gets old. The Truckin->Spoonful isn't remarkable but it's solid. My tape didn't have the encore and I wasn't always in the mood for a double helping of Chuck Berry, so I sometimes pressed stop here... but sometimes I'd just press fast forward and then flip the tape to hear that beautiful Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie one more time...

Not sure about Santa Rosa. Good and definitely interesting, but a bit uneven. Would much prefer the Ark shows, or maybe Philly from February.........

1979 was a great year for the band. If you don't like it that is fine.
If they stopped playing after 1969, this site would not even exist.

Deadvikes - I used to rate 12/26 and 12/28/79 very highly indeed - but I haven't been moved to play either of them for quite some time. It's a year where I'm happy with what I've got, but don't particularly want anymore.
I guess the exception would be the final show with Keith - but that's not really what people mean by "1979" I don't think.
The last show I played - part of it anyway, was the Road Trips featuring jams from 6/18/74. Now that is solid gold! Nobody else I heard in 1974 was playing anything like this. Not really jazz or rock - I think they had made up their own genre by this stage

I did hit the beginning of the second set of 10 27 79 yesterday doing some PT. High energy and interesting jams. If I could only set the time machine back a week before and get Betty out there to record it, well.. the world would be a different place.

As to Louisville 74, I've always had a lot of respect for that show, it never gets old even the spooky discordant pieces. The transition from Eyes of the World to China Doll could be my favorite one.

Now a 69 Banana Box Set you say? Bad shoulder or not, I am dancing a jig in anticipation.

It's good vibe Saturday all day here at dead net. Not sure if I am tossing out a suggestion, but I am going to put on the acoustic set from 12 26 69 to start my day and kick off the weekend with some of the best vibe GD that's been released in the last few years. I thought 7 13 84 would pair pretty well with the Frost shows that were just released too.. they do a scarlet>something>fire I think?? sort of pairs with the Scarlet > Eyes.

I have managed not to re-injure it while it's in a delicate state. That counts for something, right?

I'm roasting this weekend too. I tried to send a big bag off to people I know that like coffee around Christmas and New Years. I am still working my way through that list. After about three batches I lose interest and end up putting it down.

I am doing some sticky full roast Kenyan right now mixing it up with a smaller batch of Sumatra. I always had a soft spot for those earthy Indonesian beans and have been on a Kenyan kick for a couple years.

How this tie into the GD? Not sure.. I did see one of the few GD shows that started off with Casey Jones and certainly the only one post hiatus. That's gotta count for something, you've got to watch your speed that's for sure.

I'm beating my 1969 drum too while listening to our last banana box release.

Edit: Did the SBD on archive. Killer show but now I see why the RT 2.3 version is chopped up. Sound issues early but this Sacks-Hollister sbd has very dynamic sound when it settles in. Mind bending Let It Grow.
