Man. It is so hard to find like-minded players... and then, you find them and they FLAKE! I should be finishing up a new CD right now, but my on/off music partner of 25 years decided to do this other gig and shine me on completely... so... Is anyone looking for a solo acoustic guy to open their shows? :D http://iacmusic.com/larree

but I cannot recommend them strongly enough. And I've said it before but I'll say it here, I'd much rather listen to Tom Pinatelli play (he was in another band, regrettably gone, with a friend of mine) than any lead guitarist in any Dead-related band I know. So anyone who has the chance to check them out, do it!

    Dog Beaver
Dog Beaver was initially formed as a duo (Mick Flaire & Kenny Briggs) on February 5th, 1989 inside the Grateful Dead's empty production office at the Oakland Civic Auditorium (currently the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium) the night before the Dead were to kick off their Chinese New Year/Mardi Gras run. Guarding a bare stage, in an empty auditorium, in the middle of the night, the 2 Bill Graham Presents Bluecoats (security staff) were just fooling around with a pair of synthesizers and a 4-track recorder, and made a recording that they jokingly titled, "We Blew Or Own Minds Once". The first track on the recording was facetiously entitled "March of the Giant Cockroaches". To put it bluntly, it was just 2 guys making a lot of noises, and and putting it down on tape! "The Tape", as it was jokingly referred to, was then circulated amongst co-workers, family and friends, garnering some interesting responses. To follow up with the charade, Mick and Kenny decided to perpetuate the "joke" and adopted two "performing personas" by taking the discarded birth names of Conway Twitty (Harold Jenkins) and Gene Chandler (Eugene Dixon) thus becoming "the two old blues guys" to be known as Harold "Dog" Jenkins & Eugene "Beaver" Dixon! Within a few months time the duo of Mick (Harold "Dog" Jenkins) Flaire & Kenny (Eugene "Beaver" Dixon) Briggs was augmented by 3 other friends & co-workers from the concert security staff that just happened to be musicians too. Added to the pair was Mike Wittwer on rhythm guitar, Mike Thompson on drums, and Gary Lambert on bass. And that became the first incarnation of Dog Beaver, the band! Dog Beaver's first official gig was at the Bill Graham Presents Holiday Party in December of 1989, in what used to be an old prohibition-era speakeasy located beneath the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. It was for that first public performance that the sixth member of Dog Beaver, Tom Pinatelli was added on lead guitar, solely on the recommendation of his wife Maggie, who also worked at BGP, in the accounting department. Maggie had mentioned to Mick that her husband Tom, who although he hadn't been in a band for years, was in her Top 5 guitar players ever! Upon hearing that glowing endorsement, Mick invited Tom to come play with Dog Beaver at the Holiday Party, sight unseen, no audition necessary! The addition of Mr. Pinatelli to the proceedings that night turned out to be most fortuitous for The Beav', as they now had a lead guitarist that could hold his own amongst the best axemen in the area. In keeping with the concept that led to Dog Beaver’s origin, the band has recorded nearly every single jam & performance, from it’s inception to the present. In order to tell who had played on a given recording, each member of Dog Beaver was given a number, based on their order of entry into the band, a number that each band member would retain for life! Flaire, who had provided the gear that first fateful night, took No. 1 for himself, co-founder Briggs was issued No. 2, Wittwer No. 3, Thompson No. 4, Lambert No. 5, and last but certainly not least, Pinatelli was given No. 6. Since that time Mike Wittwer has left this mortal coil in 2001, Mike Thompson and Gary Lambert both retired from actively playing in the band, but none the less have retained their numbers, and were replaced by Tree Leyburn (No. 7) on bass, and John Olson (No. 8) on drums, both no longer actively playing with the group, yet also retaining their respective numbers. The present incarnation of Dog Beaver has been together since 2004 with the addition of Guapo (No. 9) on drums, bass & guitar, Chip Usas (No. 0) on bass, & Brian Craft (No. 00) on drums & vocals. No longer being content with just "making noise", Dog Beaver now does long, trippy, extended psychedelic cosmic blues jams, and occasionally will break into actual songs with the "real" lyrics and everything, albit somewhat altered, LOL! The acronym they use to describe their genre is FIJ (prounounced "feedge"), which stands for Free-form Improvisational Jams. When it comes to The Beav', as they are affectionately known, there is no right or wrong, good or bad, it just is what it is! They are not confined by the concepts of tonality, rthym, timing, or even ensemble playing for that matter! Their on-the-spot compositions exist by virtue of the fact that there are multiple, and not necessarily related, things going on at the same time, in the same space! Dog Beaver, disputedly, coined the term "it is what it is", which has now become a catch phrase for all things that defy description or definition! Starting in 1994, with the re-opening of The Fillmore in San Francisco after a 5 year re-modeling process (the building was heavily damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake) Dog Beaver has become the unofficial house band of the Fillmore by playing in The Fillmore’s Poster Room Lounge once a month for the last 15 years! By virtue of their extended engagement there, they now hold the dubious distinction of having played The Fillmore more times than any other artists in the history of the building! That’s more times than the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & the Holding Company, & the Quicksilver Messenger Service combined! In keeping with their “underground” roots, which is not a calculated move, but a none the less very real situation, Dog Beaver after 19 years together, still has no management, no record label, no CD releases, no website other than this My Space page, and only in the last few months, thanks to their live collaboration with Electrorganic (Nick Howard) now have a video clip. Their primary source of publicity is by word-of-mouth from those who have stumbled upon one of their infrequent live performances. So you, by virtue of having just read this bio, are now hip to “The Beav’”! Cheers! www.myspace.com/dogbeaver

Woohoo! I get to post first...now...if I only had something to say...Just kidding! This topic is a great idea. Thanks so much for getting this up so quickly (and thanks to SPACEBROTHER for being the kind of person that makes things happen). Hey, I've got my own thing going called Fralex9 which can be heard by visiting http://www.myspace.com/fralex9 . OK, now here is the deal. I need musicians and I'd really love to meet up with some Dead Head musicians as my songs are written with parts specifically designed to be stretched out and jammed upon. I'm in the Seattle area and I'm looking for people who want to play once or twice a month, your material, my material, Material, whatever, just wanna jam with some new folks! I'm looking forward to hearing all about everyone's music, too. One of my favorite things about Dead shows was that there were always jams in the "lots" or wherever else surrounding the venue. Always quality, always positive.

My name's Ben; i've been in New York for eight years now, five of those as a bass. We had a band for three years that did (mostly) original rock and roll ("rockin' blues and country roll"). that fell apart, as these things do after our first and last tour up the east coast to Maine. Since then, every musician i know seems to be quitting their day jobs and playing jazz to make ends meet so I've been playing jazz for a year and a bit. Of course i want to play f**&%$n' rock and roll! I heard about a Grateful dead jam a little while ago but it turned out to be not much more than three guys in a bar with too much gear and not enough rehearsal time, so that was that. I have (as of now) one regular saturday night jazz gig, as well as the odd studio project on the burner, so let's get together. I still have a day job, which is teaching, which means i'm now on summer vacation, ready to whore myself out to anyone with a dollar to give me for playing! I sure hope you live on the east coast, cause otherwise this was a ot of rambling for nuthin!

Like I said above; I play bass, and I'm going to have a lot of time on my hands in the next few months, so if anyone wants to get together and play, lemme know, 'because that would be nice.

Bobby Ace said: "I sure hope you live on the east coast" I hope that wasn't aimed at my ramble above 'cause I can't get much further from NYC and still be in the US. My long tangent is verbose so I can see how you might have missed that I'm in the Seattle (WA) area. Wish we could jam, though...AND...nice level vibes to ya! I'm just a, well...porpoise.

Maybe I'll post this here; I put it in another forum and this one is probably more appropriate. Hi all, I can tell you about a few of my songs that I wrote about the Grateful dead. I've posted them on a myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/dcmuir I write quite a lot but these ones were written directly for/about the Dead. Some day I will post a couple of 'albums' of my stuff on a web page when it can be constructed. I'm not a very economically minded musician and would just like to share my inspiration as it comes to me. Right now I'm just posting versions of songs that I've recorded while playing all the parts myself. I do dream of having my music getting a life of its own and taking me along but in the meantime people may as well enjoy it who can!

That's what I do.I've finished recording the 12 songs for the cd - most based on things our 5-year-old daughter says and does. Just doing some minor touch-ups then it's off to Black Dog Studios in Tampa to be mixed and mastered. Hopefully out by early fall. www.myspace.com/chipwithrow www.chipwithrow.com I've been performing solo acoustic on and off since early 90s. Hi to everyone,I really enjoyed checking out all of the links to the forum members' music; definitely a talented bunch. Anyway, I always dug the more free-jazz, experimental jams of the Dead (especially 73-74), and am a classically/jazz trained keyboardist. Have played in various projects, but most recently my instrumental experimental project called ebu-light dew of winter & brother hare. Dave,Just checked out your page and I really dig Tall Tale - reminds me of Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, the old Keith Godchaux tune. King of Hearts also has (to my ears, at least) a hint of Unbroken Chain - very nice. Did some recording last night with my friend Eric Jackson, a singer songwriter pianist. Hay now Guys, This is cool, a forum for musicians to meet.... My name is Woody, been a Deadhead and going to shows for many many years, so many show, I lost count. I've been working on a basement project CD, called, On the Spirit Trail, inspired by all the road trips taken over the years. It started about a year ago as a myspace project where I recorded a few Dead cover tunes and Dead inspired original songs and posted them on myspace. I've made a couple demo CDs in the past to give out to friends I meet along the road. Then I decided to enter a couple songs into a Relix jamoff contest to try to get onto their compilation CD. Did not win, but received runner up, which was more than I thought I'd get and It got me an add in the Relix June issue. That gave me the inspiration to try to put together a real CD. It turned out to be a bit more work than I originally thought it would be, had to get licenses in place for the Dead and other cover songs, CD art, CD mastering, and have learned lots of stuff along the way about how to make a real CD. The CD should be released around June 21st or so. It is at the replicators now. It is kind of a cross between the Grateful Dead and Yonder Mountain String Band. Will be available from CD baby and I will be trying to sell a few along the road durring this year's road trip. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Image Hosted by ImageShack.us You can listen to a few of the songs at my myspace site. Check it out and let me know what you think. www.myspace.com/woodyinthebasement Cheers and see you'all on down the road.... Woody www.myspace.com/woodyinthebasement www.woodyinthebasement.com

The Jack Fate Band is my current lineup of friends that stretch back almost thirty years and still going strong. Currently we are a quartet with two acoustic guitars, flute and percussion. We play primarily music of the 60's, but will try anything and if it works we embrace it. As we all have professional day jobs, this is more of a hobby, but I know we are having more fun than should be legal. You can usually find us in the garage on Saturday nights, but we are always willing to play benefits and parties. Just remember that there is nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile.

First of all - Woody, checked out your myspace.com/woodyinthebasement page. Good stuff - like the mando in G minor.I put 4 new songs on myspace.com/chipwithrow last night. They are all on my upcoming CD titled Everyday Things. What you will hear on myspace and on my web site, chipwithrow.com, are the rough mixes. I'm sending them off to Black Dog Studios in Tampa to get mixed and mastered this week. The songs on myspace now are special because they feature the singing debut of my 5-year-old daughter Josie ("Gnu Gnu") and my wife Anna ("Everyday Things" - she does a whistling solo too). My friend Eric Jackson (myspace.com/ericjacksonmusic) plays melodica on "Gnu Gnu" and sings background on "Hello to the Rain." What I do is folk rock with a kids/family twist. My wife is my manager, and we're putting together a whole multi-media concept with activities, educational stuff, merchandise ... I'm a teacher, and a lot of the songs have (I like to think) learning value. My wife thinks Hello to the Rain sounds like a song Weir might sing. I've been told Gnu Gnu sounds like a Phish song - I know I've seen folks grooving to it at my gigs. Also on myspace, scroll down to the comments and check out the cd cover art done by my pal James Hixson. "Got a few wrinkles but that's OK, hang out in the breeze and they'll blow away"

I am a founder and the bass player for The VW Project. The VWP is a 4 piece band that plays primarily JGB material, but alas we cannot ignore the GD material and as such, we do play some Dead tunes. We can be found on the web at www.thevwproject.com or www.myspace.com/thevwproject. Currently we are in rehearsals for the "Splintered Sunlight Family Campout" produced by Who Hill. This is an all day event in Consetoga, PA (Lancaster County) with (in order of appearence) Realitive Matter, The VW Project, Moses Livingston & The Raggamuffins and Splintered Sunlight. There is vending and camping with an acoustic jam around the campfire at the night's end. Music begins at noon on September 8th and addmission is $40 in advacne, $60 day of show. The bands are not getting paid a ton of money and the addmission is to help offset the costs of producing this show. This is the third year for this event and it's a ton of fun! For ticket information please go to www.whohill.net. Oh, and this site rocks!

I joined a four-piece band a few months ago as bassist, and we've performed "Truckin'" at our gigs. The guitarist and I are trying to work "Tennessee Jed" into the lineup. I had an acoustic guitar duo for a couple of years, but my partner moved to Colorado, where his girlfriend lives. We used to play a lot of Dead, including a whole set's worth on the 10th anniversary of the day Jerry died. A few weeks ago, I met a very talented guitarist named Patti Spadaro who has relocated to this area (near Pittsburgh) from California, where she wowed everyone with her chops. Patti heard me playing a few Dead tunes at an informal performance and introduced herself. We decided to pair up and plan to start playing shows next month. 60S2NZ

Our band is called "Grooveyard" ( www.myspace.com/okgrooveyard ). We exist in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada. It's a beautiful place to live, wine country, a couple of driving hours north of the Washington border. That said, there's precious few heads in the area. Our band's line up is: bass, drums, percussion, lead vocal, guitars X 2. The set list used to be all Dead tunes. Now it's expanding outward somewhat. (Stevie Wonder/Allman Bros./Original tunes...) For gigs we mostly do a few of the summer festivals held in our area. Check out the 'Festival of Freedom' at Grand Forks, B.C., or the 'Life and Arts Festival' held annually in Kelowna, B.C. I look forward to checking out the myspace links I see in these posts! All the best everyone, Grooveyard

Celebrating 20 years deadicated to playing music from the Grateful Dead, and Jerry Garcia Band. Check out Cubensis on archive.org for live aud recordings and some sbd's as well. Look for us if your in the LA area. Cubensis.com for a list of upcoming shows and more. Cubensis is unique in the way they approach GD music. Craig (lead guitarist) plays different era jerry guitar styles, sometimes not corresponding to any recorded or live version of the same era...Tom (Keys) plays and sings most like Brent...but also sings Jerry songs, and with a Brentlike voice sings Jerry and Pigpen tunes also. Nate (Bob Weir Guy) sings and screams, and plays guitar like bob, but also sings Jerry Tunes and plays Jerry leads (he's done a national Jerry Garcia guitar licks DVD to prove his worthiness) Larry (Phil Lesh) sings Pig songs as well as dropping the Philbomb as needed....Steve- (Mickey and Billy stuff) is prolly the hardest working of all...besides playing all the drum parts...sings a lot of Jerry Tunes while not missing a beat playing the part of 2 drummers, adding all that up creates a sort of "fantasy grateful dead" experience, while on occasion having members of the extented GD family join in playing with them makes it that more special. Come check us out if you can and enjoy all the great music out there...Peace Johnny Soundman Cubensis www.cubensis.com www.electricblue.net/jrmaudio/ www.electricblue.net/Deadspace/

Hey all, I saw about 40 GD/related shows between '85-'95, and have kept up with the boys in the years since, as well. I play in two Chicago groups you may be interested in: Tangleweed is a bluegrass band with a huge bag of bluegrass and jazz traditionals, rock covers and a growing list of originals. Our first two cd's have been played in over 20 countries. We recently played Wakarusa Fest in Lawrence, KS (Widespread, Sam Bush, Claypool, Stringcheese, etc...). Check us out at: http://tangleweed.org http://myspace.com/tangleweed Magnetosphere is a space-rock group playing most original material. We do a few shows a year, make a record now and then, and mostly jam weekly in my attic for our own sanity and enjoyment. We and combine GD-influenced inprovising with Crazy Horse's epic two-chord jams and Sonic Youth's noise freakouts, among many other influences and styles. Check us out at: http://magnetosphere.com http://myspace.com/magnetosphere There's plenty of free tracks for the taking on both sites, and Tangleweed has a couple shows on the Archive.org site. Please drop me a line if you happen to be interested in any of this! Peace from Chicago, Scott Scott Judd Chicago, IL http://tangleweed.org http://magnetosphere.com

If some of you remember King Fish and gigs they did in the Bay Area, you probably remember Black Rose. They opened the show for Kingfish and Garcia Saunders and played at Chateau Librete' , Keystone Berkley and placed up near Sonora and all over North California. I was the bassist, vocalist, songwriter guy in the band. Other bands I'd been in- Awsome Light Band, Point La Hasche, George Haggerty Band, Sacred Ground and The Treatment. I live north of Seattle now and my band , Blue Rose, gigs around here. It's funny, this place fits a song I wrote along time ago - Wrinkled Sunshine. I'm currently making a new website for Blue Rose and will post the URL, soon.

I have just been doing the Solo thing lately.....Alone & Acoustic.............doing lots of Dead, Dylan, Stones, Band, Cash, etc. Nothing new, just the solid gold classics from 50's through 70's, except for all GD music. Come check some out if you are into it. www.myspace.com/jerryroskinmusic Let There be Songs To Fill The Air!

Is the name of my current outfit.check us out @ www.myspace.com/fatwednesdayband we're a 60's through 90's cover band specializing in private parties, weddings, graduations, anniversaries, etc...but we do a few bar gigs for fun too! We camp pretty heavily on the 70's, and do abut half a dozen Dead covers. Been a musician professionally for 20 years, but it's grown into a side project for me since I now have a family to feed and mortage to pay! I've recorded and played live with Steve Kimock on a number of occasions and shared the stage with acts such as Dinosaurs, Robert Hunter, Kingfish, Zero, Phish, WSP, SCI, & Blues Traveller. That's it in a nutshell.

Izzie, I checked out the Lindells. That is some good stuff!I just uploaded 3 songs to myspace.com/chipwithrow. They are the first three mixed and mastered versions of songs on my upcoming CD "Everyday Things." It's very much the kind of CD a Deadhead with kids might want to share with the family. Black Dog Studio in Tampa is doing the mixing and mastering, and they are staying very true to my earthy sound. These are songs that I perform solo on guitar and harmonica, but on the album I also do keyboard and percussion. I have a few guests - my wife and daughter on backing vocals and my pal Eric Jackson (myspace.com/ericjacksonmusic) on backing vocals and melodica. Mostly I do original poetry with some harmonica and percussion. I like to call the band SplitSilverIntrinsic,a color combination that I created. For instance, SplitSilverPurple would be a haze of purple over a haze of silver. I have also used a tamborine. I play a bit of keyboard and some classical guitar, but it's mostly something life a beatnic type deal. It's fun, and that's what counts the most. Don't look for me in stores anytime the century. I shamelessly invite you all to Berkys Bar in Tucson, Arizona on any Thursday night. We've been playin' Dead for seven solid years. I have uploaded a couple of show to the Internet Archive. Try this one: http://www.archive.org/details/Top_Dead_Center_Eds_Exit_May_2004 It's been downloaded 1354 times--I don't have that many friends. It's a little old. I've been trying to get my hands on some newer stuff to upload for a while. For other stuff, search for "Top Dead Center" in open source audio. Happy listening. If you make it to Berkys, let us know you're there! Pete

The Grateful Dead The Grateful Dead where an amazing experience. To this day I can feel what a show felt like. The sound of a train chugging along and feeling the power that just descended onto this far away city for a couple days. When I would visit Northern Cali just North of San Fran when I was twisting and turning on those dusty roads in the middle of nowhere on the way to visit friends, I would feel the power and the influence of the Grateful Dead. The positive vibes and the thought of a complex world and knowledge truly drew me in after the music had enlightened me. The Grateful Dead scene ended as we knew it in 1995, but this complex and influential world is carried on. Everyone on this site is evidence to this. It’s strange that I perceive the word "complex' as being a negative notion these days, but when I speak of complex in this comment it has more of a positive and discovering overtone to it. Anyway, this world was carried forward in my life after the Dead stopped touring until I could not hold on any longer. The bus stopped for me while I was back stage "Clinic" at my last Phish show in Mountain View Cali 2000, as I found myself disenchanted with my connection to Phish which extended beyond 175 + shows. It was not just Phish’s fault it was just the need for change and everyone who has followed similar foot steps can attest to this. The road is for gamblers and as good as we may at surviving the end has to come and you must turn the page. I my bones need some patching and books seemed the way to patch them and whenever I lifted my head from the books I jumped on an airplane to faraway places and then returned to the States and studied more. I have a compulsive personality so when I do something I get into it and there is no stopping me from finding the core. This too was influenced by the Dead because I always related the GD to intelligence and far away places and the Core. I remember reading Relex and there was a section called “We Are Everywhere,” and we are and there are reasons why we are everywhere. These days I listen to a lot of Dead and Jazz. As there is a good Jazz club in town and it is actually the oldest Jazz club in China so it has a lot of history to it as well. Gangsters and the Shanghai underworld back in the 20s and 30’s. I recall the first time I went to a Jazz club. The decision to go to this club, knowing that I was way underage and there was no way that I could have anything other than a cup of coffee, was based on the fact that I wanted to get closer to the music of the Grateful Dead. To this very day the Grateful Dead influence me and I hope that my children embrace this experience as much as I had. So far so good! All the stars are gone but one Morning breaks here comes the sun Cross the sky now sinking fast Show me something built to last

Just about 7 years of playing in the band, unbelievable. We are from Roslyn WA (Northern Exposure's Cicely Alaska) and play an eclectic mix of covers and originals. At first we couldn't figure out what to call ourselves, so just before our first gig the bar manager says "so what are we going to call you, Free Beer?" and it stuck. We tried to change it many times for a number of reasons, especially trying to book gigs outside of Roslyn, not to many places want "Free Beer" printed outside their establishment. Exit 80 was our last attempt and it sort of stood the test of time. So really we have three names (1) Free Beer at Exit 80, (2) Free Beer, or (3) Exit 80, its a slight case of identity crisis. A couple of us are Heads and try to point us in that direction. I prefer the experimental aspect of playing music, what's life without a few risks. Sometimes we have our moments, and I guess that's what keeps me going. There are few feelings that can compare with meshing musically with people to the point when the "music plays the band." Check us out at www.exit-80.com and myspace. I can't remember where at myspace but just search Free Beer at Exit 80 and you should find us.
