left the orchestra section during ship of fools and arrived in the loge for the basso profundo MNS - it's the best of the tour so far, i think, and the balcony is shakin' to its raging outro leading. i sit to take a short break, too.

yet another night of the first set seeming to spill over. first half of this second set is well-played, indeed, but the sugaree is the INSANE highlight, and keith and jerry are battling it out. one of the strongest estimateds of tour and i, for one, am happy for the FOTD break. the second half belongs to jerry - eyes is short but stellar and bridges to yet another rip-your-heart-out wharf rat, and NFA showcases some down in the weeds jamming. we're stomping and clapping and grinning our faces off, and then joint is jumping for sure as they close it down. another fine UJB encore sends me out the door, so very deeply in love with this band and its music. is there anything better than being a deadhead?

Is there anything better than being a Dead Head when one of your favorite shows is officially released in its entirety? We'll double down on your sentiments WolfmansBrother, with DAVE'S PICK VOLUME 50: PALLADIUM, NEW YORK CITY, NY 5/3/77, and we'll bring the fire extinguisher to cool you off after you listen to Betty Cantor-Jackson's complete recording. Don't want the party to end? We'll stoke those embers with a few hot tracks from the first set of  5/4/77. Dave's Picks Subscribers score the monstrous second set from 5/4/77 featuring "Scarlet>Fire,"  "Terrapin," 'Playing In The Band," "Comes A Time," and more. Woowee!

this probably means nothing, but ...

a friend who is a pro snapper just sent TPTB a classic shot he took of Jer during the final five night run in October 1974.

Not sure what to make of that. I kinda think maybe it's for a Dave's Picks -- perhaps a whole show from that run for release this year? If it were for a box set, I'd think they'd have asked for more pics. That said, there had to be many snappers at those shows, so probably they have plenty to select from.

Passing this along knowing it only generates questions rather than answers. ForensicDoc, who also provided pics for a DP, has to love that cryptic statement...

Go see it. Mrs, Big and I just got home from the six hour drive, and it was totally worth it. 18,000 heads from all over the planet were there for one thing, to attend the new church of the Grateful Dead. Man oh man, we got the feeling! Here's the setlist:
First Set: Shakedown, Jack Straw, New Speedway Boogie, Row Jimmy, Tennessee Jed ,PITB, Don't Ease Me In.
Second Set: UJB, China>Rider, Dark Star> Drums>Space>Stella Blue, Terrapin, Hell in a Bucket, Black Muddy River, Casey Jones.
Big city prices on everything, but to Vegas, the Sphere, and especially the Band, I say
"Thank you, for a real good time!!!" Woooooo

I'll be at TTB with Little Feat on Wednesday. It's a little closer to home, about a five minute drive.

    Good Sheet Mon!
Had only seen clips on devices etc, never a whole show!
I only wish I knew the songs, and only gripe: vocals perhaps a tad too low in the mix, and I couldn’t understand much of the lyrics unfortunately…BUT,
the playing was fantastic all around, and
They did take me too the special place where goosebumps live etc, even a tear or too of Joy and beauty! Which was nice…needed a “live” music fix.
Not sure I’d become a huge fan, but will definitely enjoy a show now and again from the cocoon.
    ONWARD indeed!

Edit: got HNd via my torture test above, but only had to remove Dubba u dubba u dubba u, which I guess is proper…

...have been told of kings and days of old but there's no England now
All the wars that were won and lost
Somehow don't seem to matter very much anymore
All the lies we were told
All the lies of the people running round and their castles have burned
Now I see change
But inside we're the same as we ever were

Living on a thin line
Tell me now, what are we supposed to do?

Now another century nearly gone
What are we gonna leave for the young?

What we couldn't do, what we wouldn't do

It's a crime, but does it matter?

Does it matter much, does it matter much to you?

Does it ever really matter?

YES, it really, really matters

As usual, such discounts and the like are only valid within the US, thereby discriminating against folks in the rest of the world. I, for one, hate discrimination.

It’s a shame that it won’t work outside the US. It must be a new slogan Make America Cheap Again :))
I hope it lasts long enough for you to use it on the new box set. It will be useable on DaP51 if you didn’t subscribe.

Edit: It isn’t much of a gamble either. 5 spins and 5 wins. Surely the cookies should know I’m not in the US and not give me the option to get a discount code that I can’t use.

Discounts, two for the price of one, special offers - for a limited time only, meal deals - yuk. All attempts to get you to buy something you don't need. Just tell us the price and if we think it's worth it we'll buy it.

Ignore the subject line; it was just for eyeballs - but this one's for Daverock and anyone else who might be spending tomorrow voting rather than grilling (or maybe both?) -- Sooo, are we really going to see the Conservatives devastated? And anything you want to share about this Starmer chap? Bit of a hit piece on Starmer (penned by Oliver Eagleton) appeared today in the NY Times. My impression had been that in recent years Labour has been held back bc of Corbyn, but I'm seeing other news articles claiming that Starmer is quite unpopular too...?

rhetorical question: does the "West" have any politicians that anyone truly likes and trusts? xD

And just to keep this semi on-target for this thread: my word, I really do enjoy that Eyes of the World->Jam-> Wharf Rat from Dave's 50. I hardly listen to Vol 41 (5/26/77) but this release has been sticky for me.

I've been listening to some acoustic Jorma Kaukonen concerts lately to soothe my soul (many to be found on that amzprime place). Acoustic Dead works very well also. With some Joe Pass shows from the Great American Music Hall (Wolfgangs Vault) in between. It would be great to see more acoustic Dead released soon. And maybe again in some new acoustic combos once they're done at the Sphere too, with lots of guests.

As for the world, those corrupt folks may be attempting to end democracy right out in the open, but at least we are aware of their intentions (rather than fighting some secret agenda). It's like when Batman is tied to the train tracks and the Joker foolishly reveals his entire plan. Let them keep saying the quiet part out loud (even if we can't listen to it anymore). I am worried, but apathy doesnt seem likely this time around, given the stakes. One can hope.

Jeff: thanks for finding that previous post about 5/7/89. I had forgotten I wrote that. Unfortunately with all the official releases and other musical things, I haven't revisited that show in years. I just know when my freaky friend, who went, gave me the tapes I would crank all that psychedelic stuff in the car. Needless to say, with windows down, it drew attention! Hell Yeah for psychedelia!

Ticket Master - and having online breaches. I have tried to limit that. I really don't download apps to phone, and don't buy on phone, check bank on phone. I do things the best way for me, I have one computer I do all transactions on and check banks electronically. Then I have a couple of other computers, this one I am typing on and then a laptop I have hooked to television to play online music stuff on - utoob, livephish, nugs.

Tower Records - only went to one Tower Records. The city of angels location on sunset blvd. if I remember correctly. That was June 1987. I have/had a demo tape of some of my friends original music. Hard to heavy metal, for back then. I had a friend (deceased) that I write about every so often. He went to GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) from 1984 thru 1986. When he moved home he braught back a guy named Gene Baker from California to put a band together. Gene spent about a year here before moving back to LA basin area. He started when he lived here making custom guitars. He has a successful business now. Jimmy Herring plays his guitars. If memory serves, Jimmy Herring was at GIT about the same time which is how they met, along with my deceased friend. Gene's custom guitars shop can be found by searching Gene Baker guitars California. Or it is all one word b 3 guitars.com(mercial) Another member of that class at GIT was Michael J Fox, who was preparing for Back to the Future.

So that is enough for now. Have to read back again stufff!
Later!

I saw the Dead email land, I thought this is finally it! The Box announcement for Summer 2024! Alas, it is just this spin and win gimmick. Come on Dave! Folks are waiting patiently here.
PF - Cheers!
PS - Seattle Kraken hired a female assistant coach, first time in the history of the NHL. Played her hockey at Cornell. The times they are a changing’.

That would be awesome news. I could never understand how you take an open arena (plus other areas) and make it work as open meeting space. Last renderings I saw showed they weren't even going to put a drop ceiling to help with HVAC issues. Utility bills would make it a no go. I think when they ran the numbers, revenue generation versus expenses; it became obvious.

We talked about this many years back and it may be separate issues, but they did find a mummified corpse in the walls, maybe in 2022. Maybe at first their was a rumor of a corpse in there but could never find an official page until i found that kaiser news on a search. About 10 days ago. whatta coiwikidink

Obeah - yes, General Election in Britain tomorrow. Most people I know have a sense of disbelief about what the conservative and labour leaders are saying. It's widely thought that labour will get in, and that if you don't vote for one of those two parties you are wasting your vote. Nobody I know has any particular belief in Keir Starmer - he just seems preferable to Rishi Sunak. I don't think people who will be voting for Sunak like him much either - to them he just seems preferable to Keir Starmer.
The main newsworthy action of Ed Davey, leader of the 3rd most popular party the Liberal Democrats, was him doing a bungee jump. There he is, dangling by his foot from a huge crane above a crowd of bemused onlookers. God help us!

I always want 5/9/77 to be better than 5/8/77, but when I play them both one after the other, I am always a bit disappointed to find out I don't think it is. Apart from the opening H-S-F. Still a great show of course. 5/7/77 seems underrated to me. Maybe because it isn't routinely referred to as being great.

..........and so are Veneta and Cornell. VASTLY overrated. Not bad shows, but back in the day we lacked perspective. Now that tons of 1972 and 1977 have been released, they can be relegated to their proper place.

Veneta especially is one of those "you had to be there" type of show. But just one man's opinion, musically there's probably at least ten E72 shows that are better, and maybe even a couple of the August BCT shows are better.

Never understood all the buzz surrounding Cornell, always liked the next night better. Different material, more to my liking. We did see the show immediately preceding Cornell----good but not great show.............

This is why there's different flavors of ice cream---we all know chocolate peanut butter cup is the best, but there's always some holdout who prefers pistachio............

Rock on and watch out for wayward fireworks!

I think I've lived long enough to understand that plans really are very overrated......

Right on Joey, and
What Doc just said, cept maybe the BCT part lol

I’ve bitched about the lack of perspective Doc sights, which I call the taper bias, for years. What’s even worse, THE INTERNET. No offense, but if more folks actually sat down and listened to shows on their own instead of reading about what someone else thinks and without all that bias noise in their head they might be surprised…
Fuch the internet, screw all the taper hype BS…if you get confused, just

In no particular order...

@Daverock yes haha that shot of Ed Davey is basically the only photo of him that has been circulating widely here in the US. Reminded me of Boris and his zipline. Anyway, thanks for your reply, I appreciated it.

Boston-Cornell-Buffalo - back in the day I scored all 3 fairly quickly (I didn't know at the time, but I guess it was because of that big Betty drop.) So I always think of them as a triumverate. Now that we've got those Palladium shows from earlier in the week it seems just like a continuum. (Spare a thought for 5/5 - does anyone ever play that show?)

OTOH I don't think of other eras like that. Certainly Blossom 6/25/85 doesn't seem like the same vibe as SPAC 6/27 or Hershey 6/28. Maybe my perception of that week in '77 is just an artifact from the way my brain worked/was trained back when I only had a few dozen tapes

And continuing this borderline word salad: I'm with Doc on the BCT part lol (at least 8/21 and 24)

Well if you have read this far, happy 4th, everyone. Or happy General Election day. I think it's also the King of Tonga's official birthday, so there's that too

Is something that has always appealed to me. If everybody agrees on something, there must be something wrong with it - and if no one likes it, maybe it has qualities that are just harder to discern. That's why it disappoints me that I seem to prefer 5/8/77 to 5/9. I prefer the material played on the 9th - but what sets the 8th apart for me is Jerry's sparkling guitar playing on virtually every track. Even something which I usually find a bit mundane - like Peggy O, has some superb guitar playing on it that elevates it above it's normal station.
And yes, as Obeah said 5/5 is always worth a listen too.

Ed Davey's bungy jump may have been the photo opportunity that made it across the pond, but he was filmed carrying out a different cunning stunt almost every day. Failing to complete the course in a waterpark was one of his better antics. He also took an alpaca for a walk and built sandcastles on a beach. All highly entertaining but hardly an indicator of political aptitude. All will be revealed tomorrow...

Oh yes, second set 6/20/92 I have heard on cassette

6/9
6/22/92
7/1/92

I generally dont get off on guests on stage with the GD; Steve Miller plays on some of it. Pretty tolerable.

Was ist am naechsten?

6 22 92. Yeah, that's it.

FWIW, 92 has been generally ignored by me because the shows I would have attended in Eugene got canceled due to Jerry being ill.

I was not happy about that.

Hope everyone had a good one. Spent some time kayaking in the thumb of Michigan. Was surrounded by flying and diving Kingfishers the whole run. And then spotted a bald eagle, an osprey perched up all high and mighty and plenty of egrets.

For Grateful Dead listening, did Arrowhead from the '78 box on the way there. Wow how that second half takes off. And then on the way home, Dave's No. 1. Amazing second set, of course. But this time through it was the harmonizing during the mid section of Wharf Rat right before the bridge that caught me unsuspecting. Held me spellbound.

Seconded.

Just had another listen to 5/4/77 Playing->Comes a Time->Playing. It reminds me a bit of the way they played in '76. On that note, it makes me wonder when we might see the March '77 Winterland shows released. Just 6-7 weeks prior to these Palladium shows. That Winterland stand is so liminal - one foot still in '76 while the other is planted in '77.
