One of the best. I am half way through watching a great documentary that was shown on T.V. recently called "Elvis : The Searcher". Shown in 2 parts, it's about 4 hours long. Highly recommended.

I’ll echo the comments on those shows. I’d throw in The Andy Griffith show as well. I’ve seen them all countless times and they’re still funny! Add in the ones with The Dillards as the Darling Family, and you get some great bluegrass also.

Not a classic, but I’m sure some of you are familiar with the Showtime series Billions. If so, you probably have caught some of the many blatant GD quotes and references. I mean they quote Big Steve FFS!
Also, one of the main characters is named Taylor Mason, while a prolific taper was named Mason Taylor…coincidence or…?
For some reason lol, this has been nagging at me, subconsciously low lol, but never the less I’ve wondered who or what the connection is between the boys and this show?
So, anyone have any easy answers?

‘All in the family’ was based on the UK tv series ‘Til death Us Do Part’. This is a series that can’t be shown anymore given the antisemitic and racist language. On the plus side it did give rise to a the track ‘Alternate Title’ by The Monkees. Written by Mickey Dolenz after he saw the show in the UK. The title was changed when the PTB realise what ‘Randy Scouse Git’ meant.

I never knew about that Monkees connection. A great single.

Wasn't the central character of Tl Death Us Do Part - Alf Garnett, played by Warren Mitchell, originally supposed to be a somewhat ludicrous figure, to be mocked for his racist and sexist language ? I think what happened was that a fair proportion of society got the wrong end of the stick, and actually thought he was talking a lot of sense !
It happens with politicians, too.

41 years ago I was at the Frost, for 2 cool shows, what a blast! 21st opens with Cassidy. and Dire Wolf , so cool. Those were the days. Saw some great shows in 1983. Fun times!

Added thought - I'm no expert, but, I always thought Miles album Bitches Brew had a perfect example of minimum note playing on Miles Runs the Voodoo Down. I my mind there's a long dark, almost black jam. Then out of nowhere Miles cuts across the dark with a single long note. Need to relisten, but always loved that piece.

There is so much Miles out there, am still exploring the Plugged Nickel box. Hargrove's Earfood is fine stuff. A certain "to remain nameless" presidential candidate recently noted growing up in a home where she was hearing Miles and Coltrane. Stevie Wonder and Pink, how good was that, too bad they skipped James. Just scored tix Tuesday DSO show Deerfield.

It's interesting listening to Miles Davis when he was playing with Charlie Parker in the mid 1940's. Still a teenager on the earliest tracks. He sounds a bit hesitant and restrained in comparison to C.P. and other trumpet players of the era. I think this was why he was favoured by the great man - a foil rather than a competitor.

Not sure what you're referring to, looked back some pages, see no references to Rex Foundation, and when I visited the site, saw nothing about grants going to crew or anything. So, just curious what you're referring to, assume it's former crew without any retirement, but don't see anything about it.

42: years ago I was up at the Oregon Country Fairgrounds for a rocking time with the Good ole Grateful Dead. The Dead put on a great show. Robert Cray & Peter Rowan also played, It was a blast!

Strange but true: On March 9, 1974, Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda of the Japanese Imperial Army was the last Japanese soldier from WW 2 to surrender, by turning over his sword to his “captors”, ie - rescuers. He hid in the Philippine jungle for 29 years!
Also on that date, Jerry & Merl played a smokin’ set at the Keystone. Hiroo Onoda was not in attendance, missing a pretty fine show!

I was on a group tour of Hiroshima when a very old Japanese gentleman picked me out of the crowd to give me a private tour. He survived the blast, was about 15 miles out. Ended up spending an hour and a half with him. Have some great pictures of him and surroundings as well. I would have to find my notebook and look up my notes for more detail.

Went around the world on that trip to a bunch of places. Got a picture of me on a camel at Giza, went by myself into the great pyramid. A lot of info on that as my freaky friend should have been there.

Daverock - I think I understand where you're coming from, but to my mind its simply Steve talking about his own passing, no one else's. And his message resonates with me.

VGuy - the deaths of brothers Johnny and Matt Gaudreau is a haunting and sickening tragedy. Unfathomable.

Death Don't Have No Mercy. A double negative I guess it means life has mercy.

Either way, getting plowed by a car while riding a bike is not something you plan for.. you ride your bike (well, hopefully for fun but also) to stay healthy, feel good, and hopefully live a long, fruitful life.

Life is more about expectations than good v. bad. Example.. you get your end of year bonus check and it's a monster, but half as much as you thought it would be. You walk away disappointed. Or at your trial date, you get a six-month jail sentence but expected six years, you are elated, happy days. The first good news yet you are sad. The second terrible news and you want to party like it's 1999.

When I get on my bike I never expect to get plowed.. I can only imagine what their families are going through.

While we are on the topic.. favorite Death Don't Have No Mercy? I need to think about this one.

One of those songs, so haunting and beautiful. I like the 60's versions but was so happy to see it brought back ever so briefly. I got to see it performed once. A lifetime high for me. Was expecting a high time, got a dealth don't have no mercy, expectation exceeded.. happy day.

The version on Live Dead is pretty hard to top, 4/6/69 Avalon Ballroom has a killer version.

Read as a double negative - which I have never done before - it reads more like it's death that has mercy, not life. My favourite version is the one on Live Dead, hands down. Very different from the version I have heard by Gary Davis, which is also stunning.

Bluecrow - yes that's good. It always makes me wonder a bit when someone seems to be 100% sure what happens after we die. In fact, it makes me wonder a bit whenever someone is 100% sure about anything ! They often seem to be trying to convince themselves as much as anyone else.

I'm not having a pop at Steve Silberman, by the way. I have one of his books upstairs somewhere - where I know not. It's not called "Skeleton Keys", though.

If not 91, how about a show from 82 or 88. Many good shows to pick from and recorded well.

Oh and will they announce the 2024 MUATM?

34 years ago I was out at Shoreline to see Garcia & Los Lobos put on a great show. The Garcia portion of the show has been released on dvd , and well worth picking up if you can still get it.

We need more JGB video released.

I am happy this show was released. I used to have it on CD-R in the early 2000s as a decent soundboard recording. I was under the impression that this show was 30 to 45 minutes longer, which wasn't in circulation. With this official release, I stand corrected. Excellent show, thanks to the "powers that be" for this release.

Billy I was at that Shoreline show, also. The DVD also has cool after Jerry's passing interviews with the JGB band members.

SIMON I suppose that it’s possible to lurk without being registered. It does seem silly to log in just to sell items. I’m sure there are lots of sites where selling is the major purpose. This site lets us talk about music etc and to let the PTB know what we think of the items they release and why they should have released something completely different.

He may be a long time lurker - he doesn't specify that he has been doing this on deadnet specifically.
