Dave's Picks Vol. 52: The Downs at Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM (9/11/83)

I remember the venue almost like and old fort with roses everywhere. We came to the site and Wavy Gravy showed us where to camp. Ken Kesey was here as well as a couple other big figures of the counterculture. I think because of Mickey's 40th. During drums a double rainbow appeared. Every time it looked like rain the band would stop and then come back even stronger from their breaks. I saw more outdoor shows in 83 than all the years combined. I have goose bumps even typing this from the memories. - xxuncle johnxx, Dead.net

One of the best memories I have were these 2 shows. During the break there was a lightning storm behind the stage, followed by a rainbow and then an awesome 2nd set. Morning Dew with a Cold Rain, Phil singing encore. Most of my tour buddies went home after Red Rocks and I tortured them with the Santa Fe tapes. Nothing beats the magic of a great GD outdoor show. "It all bleeds into one." - grateful hawaiian, Dead.net

In between sets, I remember it rained... and early on in the second set, there was an amazing rainbow directly over the stage behind the band. I don't believe they saw it, but I'm sure they heard about it. "Let It Grow" was awesome! - Johnny_A, Dead.net

The pot at the end of this rainbow is mighty fine, indeed. Our final Dave's Picks release for 2024 features the complete unreleased show from The Downs at Santa Fe, Sante Fe, NM, 9/11/83 (fun fact, it was Mickey's 40th birthday) with just a squidge of 9/10/83 to round things out. A true trader's treat, this one is solid all around from the lively first set featuring soon-to-be minted 80s classics like "Hell In A Bucket" and "West L.A. Fadeaway" to the return of "Help>Slip>Franklin's," the incredible 2nd set surprise of "Let It Grow," and adventurous takes on "He's Gone,""Wang Dang Doodle," and "Morning Dew." It's all well played, my friend, well played.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 52: SANTA FE, NM 9/11/83 was recorded by Dan Healy and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

Simonrob - I think my post was a bit misleading. It was the music press - specifically the N.M.E. and even more specifically Mick Farren - hastily followed by Nick Kent and Charles Shaar Murray - who wrote off the big rock bands of the early 70's. I personally saw it very differently. I was 14-15 in 1972 when I first started going to gigs, and for me , seeing David Bowie, Black Sabbath and Hawkwind in particular was mind blowing. Life changingly so. But I was coming to it as someone very young who had no idea what had gone on before. The rock critics I mentioned, despite taking it upon themselves to represent the "the kids" were actually from a slightly older generation.

Manchester was a hot bed for punk - and as I liked The Stooges I gravitated towards it like a moth to a flame. The Electric Circus in some godforsaken area of the city was where it was all kicking off. Very different from seeing prog rock at The Free Trade Hall - home of the Halle Orchestra. I bought quite a few singles as well, charming little ditties with titles like "I'm Sick Of You" and "I'm A Fascist Dictator". A hoot at first - but quite a few punks seemed to adopt that world view for real. They all started looking the same, and were getting more and more antsy as they read in newspapers like The Sun that they were supposed to spit at bands and beat up hippies. As I looked like a member of Gong by 1977, I though it might be best if I moved on.

Some of the later El Michels Affair albums have a more international music flair. If Leon Michels is involved in something I usually consider it worth at least checking out. If you dig that modern stuff with the authentic retro feel then definitely check out Big Crown Records, Daptone Records and Colemine Records, they all have a bunch of modern soul in their catalogues.

    70's - A country of two halves

Wow Daverock, I don't recognize a single thing you said about the 70's. Maybe that is because we were living in completely different parts of the country. I was living on the south coast at the time. In the first half of the decade some so-called progressive bands became very pretentious but the less famous bands were as good as they had been in the late 60's. Most broke up or had become irrelevant by the second half of the 70's. Punk and suchlike was largely invisible in my part of the country. There were a few punks and some skinheads in town but you had to look hard to find them. I recall 1969 - 1974 as being the best period for music and the 1980's as being the worst. I'm surprised at how much our views of that period vary.

70's - game of two halves

In Britain it was the first half of the 1970's that were written off - mainly by some really good writers from the N.M.E. The feeling they expressed was that the 1960's featured exciting, ground breaking music, but when the 1970's kicked in technique, rather than inspiration kicked in. Most of the bands and artists from the 60's that were still around were considered past their best, and bands that came to the fore in the 70's were regarded as dull. The Stooges and the MC5 were held up as the way to go. I can remember getting Raw Power when it came out, and that seemed incendiary - very different from other hard rock albums.
Write ups were printed about the new wave of American bands who played at CBGBs, and along with the two bands mentioned above, they was considered something of a guiding light. The first Patti Smith album, and even more so the first Ramones album that came out in 1976 were really influential in this country, paving the way for the Sex Pistols and punk. As far as the critics were considered, rock had been saved at the last minute, and a lot of people went along with that.
It all seems very different now, I must say. Punk from England in the mid-late 70's is one form of music I can no longer stand - although as a teenager going to those gigs in 1976-1977 it was 'triffic.

Thanks Charlie for the big list name drop of bands! I have actually heard of and bought some of them groups before. Mainly ones I've listened to on the local jazz station, then bought piecemeal off internet tunes.
El Michaels and Budos were new bands to my surprise, they've got such a retro feel for their new arraignments. You'd think they came from a time warp it sounds so authentically old school. Real good tunes!

Speaking of ChinaRider, why oh why did they not play this in 77 (except for 12/29) and 78? Throw a few of those in the Rhythm Devils box and it would be much more enjoyable. I have no doubt they would have produced some stellar versions. Confused why Bird Song was dropped during this time as well. I get that bands tire of playing certain tunes, but these two? A shame.

And can we please, oh please, drop the politics here? I don't post much, but still offer this humble plea.

Posturing as "anti-establishment" while slavishly gobbling up and regurgitating establishment propaganda.

Railing against the "tycoons" while covering your eyes and pretending that the establishment media you're defending isn't owned by those tycoons.

Decrying "corporatism" while blindly accepting big pharma's mandates that you consume their experimental gene therapy masquerading as a "vaccine."

But anyone who questions the narrative fed to you by the tycoon-owned media and their corporate interests, is "brainwashed."

Oh, the irony.

Yes, I bought the Hawkwind box set. PXR5 was just the first LP to come to hand :))
I’ve just got the updated ‘Sideways through Time’ book as well, even though I have the original version. Now all I need is the time to read it.
DENNIS
I don’t have access to an analytical balance since I retired but the first Miles cd weighs 15 +/- 0.5g the same as the first disc in DaP #52 so they probably aren’t heavier.

Given recent events, people need to vent and process.

This is not just another political issue.

Give people a week or two.

Scroll past the stuff you don't want to see.

And eventually listen to Europe 90 tour. Some excellent material.

I've been complaining to myself for years about that PF. There has to be a better way to deal with camera angles to make it more watchable. More cameras, wide angles, maybe the occasional shot from above looking straight down? And make the puck show up better, maybe one of those computer generated things to make it orange or something. If they can place imaginary billboards in the ice and on the boards then they should be able to do this. Go Avs!
Cheers

Anyone here good at stats and patterns care to explain this. Daverock?

Obama (1st Black President) = 69 million votes.

Obama (second term) = 66 million votes.

Hillary (1st female candidate) = 66 million votes.

Biden (from his basement) = 81 million votes!

Kamala (1st Black female candidate) = 68 million votes.

That Biden is pretty amazing, don't you think? More popular than Obama! Wow.

But election fraud doesn't exist because the TV news told us so, and they would never lie.

So an instigator joins the community yesterday and decides to lecture/insult us, keep it Klassy. What are the words I'm looking for, oh, that's is

Will you shut up, man

Will you wake up, man!

You're being lied to on a massive scale by the powers that be.

Many years ago, when the Grateful Dead was a young band, the counter-culture questioned what the establishment was force-feeding us.

Now many just gobble it up and accuse anyone who questions the mainstream narrative as being an "instigator."

I'm so sorry that the things I speak of make you uncomfortable. That the facts and truths I post make you question if your manufactured reality is false (it is).

Once upon a time, we spoke about the power of the military-industrial complex and how they got us into wars for their own profit.

Now we have a President-elect who never got us into any wars, but the media-industrial complex is trying to convince people that this man is a danger to us.

He has said he is bringing into his administration another man who comes from a famous Democrat family (the most famous Democrat family, legendary in US history, in fact) and that this man, RFK Jr, (who's father and uncle were assassinated by that same military-industrial complex and the intelligence agencies that serve the same masters) will be in charge of many agendas, not least of which is making us healthy again by removing the poisonous chemicals the corporations have put in our foods.

Is that a scary thing? Has it occured to you that perhaps the big pharmaceutical companies who fund the media, and are funded by the same elites who conrol the media, might be leading you astray and programming you to hate the one who will hold them accountable, in order to protect themselves?

Wake up, man.

I stopped coming to this site so much over the last few years, and pretty much stopped posting due to the constant stream of left-wing political talking points and the insistence that anyone voicing a contrary opinion be shouted down at once. After the 2016 election this site was overrun with folks pledging their fealty to the “resistance” and promising to resist Trump’s agenda. I don’t recall any big outcry that the site was no place for politics. Likewise, in 2020 when the world went mad, this site was no place to challenge the idea that rioting in the streets and burning down cities was not a constructive or appropriate response, but it was clear that the left and most of the folks here had found a case where political violence was not just acceptable, but almost required, and, again, there was no outcry that this site was an inappropriate forum for discussing it, only an outcry that anyone with a different view bend the knee and acknowledge that everything happening was justified and acceptable or STFU. So, I have to say I find it amusing to see someone come on and spout off political views not commonly expressed here and the response is that it must be trolling and that the admin should remove the posts. Censorship is the apparently the go to answer to speech you don’t like.

Were all of the references to orange man bad, project 2025, the insinuations that everyone on the right is a facist or nazi, and the other left-wing positions and views espoused on this site over the past few years and leading up to the 2024 election trolling? If seeing political posts expressing views contrary to your own make you uncomfortable, then maybe stop and think about the impact of the stream of left-wing political posts on this site over the last few years and their impact on any deadhead into the music, but not in agreement with your political views. I can say, not the most welcoming place unless you are a deadhead with the “correct” political viewpoint. I’m sure that most of you folks are really cool and would be fun to hang out with, and I’m also pretty sure that none of you would actually hang out with me because I would never pass your political litmus tests. I don’t know who Here Comes Sunshine is, but I don’t see any problem with his or her posts, they are at least as respectful of the political posts that I have seen on this site over the last few years. And if anyone wonders, I am not Here Comes Sunshine.

On this topic, to give credit where credit is due, I suspect that Proudfoot and I probably have some pretty different political views, but I have noticed that his general response to political posts on this site over time has been to suggest if you don't like it you don't read it, not that it be censored, and I think this is the sort of respect that is lacking in our society today - the ability to accept that someone else has a differing political view and might express that view, without demanding that the opposing view be censored or shouted down.

Let me be clear Charlie, talking opposite politics does not make me uncomfortable. What I can't abide is lies, just taking HC Suns last post (the one before the lecture he gave me which I forgot to read), he neglects to mention that A) Millions of votes are still being counted in CA and B) 2020 had the highest turnout of all-time. Trump, had 12M more votes in 2020 than he did in 2016, everything scaled the way it should have. The word for people who believe lies is "Chump" and the word for people who spread lies is "F*ckwad" Not sure which HC Sun is, either way it deserved a response and there is a place named X where all the chumps and f*uckwads gather, not here

I don't think the content of HCS's post are the problem. It's more that the first posts he or she has posted on here have been quite lengthy political diatribes. If the same stuff had been posted by a regular poster on here I think it might have been read more sympathetically than is the case here.
It would be the same with any subject. If someone's first ever posts were quite long ones about hockey or King Gizzard - or Hawkwind for that matter, everyone else might wonder if that person had got lost or something.

So...a belated welcome to HCS - it doesn't matter what your politics are , or mine - the birds the word.

No, Covid-19 and Influenza are not the same. They do have a very similar IFR (Infection Fatality Ratio) though. In fact, the Flu is more dangerous than Covid for younger people. Covid has a 0.002% fatality rate for under age 18, and a 0.05% fatality rate for ages 18-50. These are the numbers from the CDC.

But no, there is nowhere near that number of people who died from Covid. They just put Covid as cause of death for everything. Again, according to the CDC's own numbers, only 5% of the deaths were from Covid alone. The other 95% had on average 4 comorbidities.

Not to mention, the year before Covid, there were 38 million Flu cases. But the year Covid hit, Flu cases dropped to 2k. That's a statistical impossibility. All Flu cases were misdiagnosed as Covid.

But anyway, masks don't work to prevent the spread of viruses. Fauci is on video admitting such.

Sorry for your health issues, but the guilt trip doesn't change the facts, and it also doesn't excuse the absolute crime against humanity the pandemic response was.

I changed my pic just for you! Take a look.

It's kind of strange that people go to such lengths to avoid GMO foods (I do as well, so not saying you shouldn't avoid GMO foods), but then turn around and take an unnecessary experimental gene therapy shot for a virus with an overall 99.8% Recovery Rate, and thus turning THEMSELVES into the GMOs. Ironic.

"But the TV didn't tell me that, so that can't be true."

Well, why would they? They are bought and paid for by the big corporations, not least of which is Big Pharma. You know, the ones who are making billions of dollars off the shots.

The process is called "reverse transcription" and it is changing your Genome. GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) is not simply hyperbole on my part. That's what they did to people, through fear and coercion. The long-term effects are unknown.
