    10/21/71 . . .

Listening again this morning and I'm suddenly thinking about the St. Stephen encore (having a "??" moment) and sure enough, this is the first of only 2 times they played it with Keith pre-hiatus, which also means (for those of you playing along at home) it is the penultimate performance pre-hiatus. The second and last time was 10/31/71 in Columbus (DiP2). Curious how it dropped out of the rotation right at the beginning of Keith's tenure and only making it's way back in June '76.

now the Penultimate Edit - oh drat, my old deadbase let me down (as in my research wasn't thorough enough.) DB IX was lacking the set list for 10/24/71 Detroit and turns out they played it at that show, again as an encore into JBG. So 10/24 is the actual penultimate pre-hiatus performance. Oh and its got a big ole Dark Star also. I'm sure Doc has talked about this one but new to me.

Yet another edit: at ~13'15" of the 10/24 Dark Star Phil begins playing a base line that basically is straight out of opening of Eyes of the World?!

That 2/17/73 HCS > China Cat > Rider is sweet!

And here we are some 13 years later. A grate start to the series! Glad I got in on the ground floor.

Like I am want to say, it's been awhile, and I can forget some things. I was looking at the set list and Disc 3 is Other One > Wharf Rat > Other One > Wheel > Around??!! Damn - play that show post haste!!

    np - Peggy-O - gorgeous sound . . . .

Y-33 congrats on the 30 trips!

edit/major edit/omfg the whole show but disc 3 no freaking way. Jerry is feeling it - jam out of Other one pt 1
Wharf Rat!! > jam into Other 1 part dos > The freaking "WHEEL"!!!!

Killer Around and then JGB to take it home. Amazing show . . . .

That sub is the older model, so it’s discounted to get rid of the remaining inventory.
Get it while you can. The current model isn’t discounted that much.
Sounds spectacular. The vinyl siding of my house vibrates. Fortunately there’s not a house next to me on that side.

Probably more essential for me... John Hammond(Junior)'s father was an essential and incredible music source/producer, impossible to cover briefly all the music he helped bring forth, including Billie Holiday, Springsteen, Dylan, Aretha, even SRV. Jr. grew up immersed, hearing so much great stuff and being around eventually famous musicians, but he stuck with the simple acoustic blues. Dave's 54 announcement made me drag out the B&W photos I managed to make that night, stage set up looks pretty minimal, no tie dye speaker covers, short stacks, Jerry is on Alligator.

That's a great album alright. The other Dead I played over the last day or so was the first show from the Winterland 1973 box - 11/9/73. A great show - every musician on top form and working together. And the next 2 shows in the box are even better.

Cnkd - I'd buy that box in a shot. It would be great if they did reissue it in that way. If they are reissuing boxes on vinyl, following on from the Fillmore West 1969 shows and those from May 5th-9th 1977, this would be an ideal choice.

BigBrownie, thanks for reminding me of 1.22.68, long time favorite show and primal. Looking forward to the new Miles boot. Oro, your mention of Pat M took me down a rabbit hole, seen him a bunch, all the way back to days with Lyle. Peak experience minimal but incredible, had a back stage pass after his show at the Kennedy Center in DC the night he was announced as NEA Jazzmaster. The band was exhausted from touring and headed off on an overnight bus to their next gig. New interview just posted, Rick Beato with Mike Stern, Mike had Pat as a teacher at Berklee, played with Miles, introduced by Billy Cobham. Beato is a superb interviewer, gets musicians talking, also check out his interview with Pat.

I have all the road trips and bonus discs, I just did not recognize the date. I will revisit this though, it might have been 10 or15 years since I listened to it last. So a great late era PITB. I'm still engaged and will give it a spin.

If I did not have it already, based on your comment I would have hunted it down.

Since I must push through a repetive set of tasks at work this morning, I needed something primal to take my mind off it, so 3/1/69 seemed called for. This show continues to be my go-to from the FW 69 box. I believe that's because I had this show on tape back in the late 80s and so it's simply burned into my brain. I do a lot of my listening in the car, and I burn CD-R copies for the purpose (so that the originals stay safe back at home). However, this morning I've found that my 3/1 CD-R has sustained some damage that affects The Eleven (aaaah noooo) so I'm going to use this opportunity to just chuck it into the trash and burn 2/28 instead in an attempt to try to get out of this 3/1 rut.

And I mean it's a deep rut - I've had the box set for years but have literally never played 2/27. The shows from 2/28 and 3/2 also get criminally overlooked... bad Obeah, baaad

Meanwhile, this weekend I got stuck into 3/17/68. Ferocious!

4-15-78 (Edit: the Let It Grow in this is fiery!)
Staying in sequence while trying to finish the Box. One more in the Devil box then I'm going to do DaP 15 from 4-22-78 to round out my April '78 tour. Not full Oro level investigation (love those, keep them coming Pedro) but I'm kinda slow. Then I may get to the Santa Fe release. Ah, the bounty of a cornucopia of fall riches!
Cheers

Man, you should give 2/27/69 a chance, I doubt it will disappoint. I know that the Dark Star is on Live Dead, so you have probably heard it a few or more times already, but it really adds to get the transition out of Mountains of the Moon into the Dark Star. My car has a radio with a hard drive, and that show is burned onto it, so I end up listening to it quite a bit. That Good Morning Little School Girl from 2/27/69 just cooks in all the right ways too, probably my favorite version. The Doin' That Rag that follows is also fantastic, I really dig it, I suspect you might as well. Really just an excellent show.
