Dave's Picks Vol. 52: The Downs at Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM (9/11/83)

I remember the venue almost like and old fort with roses everywhere. We came to the site and Wavy Gravy showed us where to camp. Ken Kesey was here as well as a couple other big figures of the counterculture. I think because of Mickey's 40th. During drums a double rainbow appeared. Every time it looked like rain the band would stop and then come back even stronger from their breaks. I saw more outdoor shows in 83 than all the years combined. I have goose bumps even typing this from the memories. - xxuncle johnxx, Dead.net

One of the best memories I have were these 2 shows. During the break there was a lightning storm behind the stage, followed by a rainbow and then an awesome 2nd set. Morning Dew with a Cold Rain, Phil singing encore. Most of my tour buddies went home after Red Rocks and I tortured them with the Santa Fe tapes. Nothing beats the magic of a great GD outdoor show. "It all bleeds into one." - grateful hawaiian, Dead.net

In between sets, I remember it rained... and early on in the second set, there was an amazing rainbow directly over the stage behind the band. I don't believe they saw it, but I'm sure they heard about it. "Let It Grow" was awesome! - Johnny_A, Dead.net

The pot at the end of this rainbow is mighty fine, indeed. Our final Dave's Picks release for 2024 features the complete unreleased show from The Downs at Santa Fe, Sante Fe, NM, 9/11/83 (fun fact, it was Mickey's 40th birthday) with just a squidge of 9/10/83 to round things out. A true trader's treat, this one is solid all around from the lively first set featuring soon-to-be minted 80s classics like "Hell In A Bucket" and "West L.A. Fadeaway" to the return of "Help>Slip>Franklin's," the incredible 2nd set surprise of "Let It Grow," and adventurous takes on "He's Gone,""Wang Dang Doodle," and "Morning Dew." It's all well played, my friend, well played.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 52: SANTA FE, NM 9/11/83 was recorded by Dan Healy and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

A long, strange and really good read. If only you could read these books or tell these stories in reverse.. the ending chapters can be a bit depressing and the has such a great start. I guess that's often true with life. I swore I was going to listen to 30 Trips Around the Sun in reverse order, but one close look at 1967 changed all that.

I also liked McNally's "On Highway 61" book. A nice history of where we are and how we got there. Another long, but excellent read.

Yes, I like to read when time arrives regardless of if I watch TV and what channels I choose to watch.

I finally got caught up on at least ripping the glorious GD bounty we have received this year. Getting all the metadata exactly right takes forever.. From one CD to the next the auto created metadata is never exactly perfect. I like all the CD's of a show in the same folder with a song naming convention that is consistent and works. I also like the song descriptions, track number, show name to be organized and consistent. And whoever decided it's a good idea to the word "live" next to each song will never understand this. Probably works for most bands where all you have is one live version and one studio version but not so much with the band beyond description.

Things are exactly perfect now, nothing left to but listen and smile, smile, smile.

Be good folks, be happy not bitter. Be nice and respectful of and to one another. If nothing else, you'll probably live longer and certainly live happier.

Stop checking for a day and come back to ten pages of "content"? My comment way back was meant as satire, anyone see SNL? They were not worried about free speech... much. Is all the pus out yet? OK, one quick question, how many other presidents suggested shooting bleach during a pandemic? Some great football yesterday, but let's get back to music and our musical heroes. Almost finished McNallys Long Strange Trip. (The Dead avoided politics for a long time). Much enjoyed the song writing references but curiously found nothing about Mississippi Half Step, admittedly is lightweight on lyrics but so much fun. McNally references Jim Rooney, one of our local grandfathers who will be playing this Friday night at a small local venue. Looking forward to Zach Nugent who will be joined by Sunshine Garcia Becker and Cheryl Rucker for an acoustic GD evening, (so no Wolf appearance though he sometimes gets to borrow it). Enjoy your Veterans Day with some music and thanks for your service.

I agree tha television has a large impact on people’s thinking but I doubt we’d agree on which channels are pushing the most propaganda.

I have been listening to ‘Television, the drug of the nation’ by The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprasy’:

On another topic. The bird that is trying to get through your window can almost certainly see its own reflection and is trying to drive out what it sees as an intruder into its territory. I find myself thinking of John Prine - "Blow up your TV, throw away your paper, Go to the country, Plant a little garden, Eat a lot of Peaches, Try and find Jesus on your own". Sage advice is timeless.

Some cool new soul by bands with Thee in the title - Thee Sinseers, Thee Heart Tones, Thee Marloes (soul by way of Indonesia, pretty cool), Thee Sacred Souls. A lot of other cool new soul too, lot's of cool stuff on Daptone Records, Big Crown Records and Colemine Records.

Ghost Funk Orchestra has some cool sounds, good stuff to listen to and wonder why I'm not depressed as I watch a three-decade plus marriage implode around me. I seem to have achieved some sort of accidental equanimity.

Life is full of mysteries. The current mystery confronting me is why a particular bird has been attempting to get through my windows and into my house. For two weeks at least. Every day. Over and over. Fly to the window, try to push through. Sit and stare through the window. Fly to a nearby branch and stare some more. Try another window. Repeat. Over and over. Two weeks straight. Same bird. I'm starting to consider opening the window to let it in just to see what it will do. The cats seem to think it's a good idea to solve the mystery, but I think that they have ulterior motives.

It's strange, but I've noticed that somewhere around 75-80mph whatever music I'm listening to in the car sounds better. The cool thing is that's barely over the speed limit if at all on a lot of MT roads.

I'd suggest everyone watch Network again. That movie is a classic, and freakily prescient. "You have meddled with the primal forces of nature Mr. Beale, and I won't have it!" Great performance by Ned Beatty.

When you complain about billionaires throwing their money into politics, don't forget George Soros, he's been in the game a lot longer than Elon, and unlike Elon he has not advanced space travel by decades for humanity. I mean, holy shit, did you see that rocket come in for a landing and get caught by the giant mechanical arms? To think, for decades, NASA just discarded that stuff. Whatever you think about his politics, he has made giant strides in space travel.

Everyone can take heart that money can't buy an election it appears, because KH spent a cool billion dollars in about 100 days and was unsuccessful, suggesting that money alone is insufficient. We all should have already learned that lesson watching JEB! and his insurmountable war chest go down in flames in 2016 after raising a then insane amount of money and going nowhere in the primary.

Boredom is an odd sort of relaxing, "Oh that magic feeling, Nowhere to go, Nowhere to go..."

Easy to go with Jim Morning Dew. The crashing crescendo at the end of the 80's period, wow.

But Stella Blue could easily slide into that postion, I think the lyrics are more touching.

For years I thought Stella Blue was a woman, then in some show, some tape, somewhere the lyrics hit me like a hammer. Now the only wonder is he slipping in to sleep or death?

Brit shows - me and a buddy can talk in Python clips (I have another friend whom I speak Honeymooners and Abbott & Costello talk). Shows we watch until lines become understood statements between friends are like conversational short hand. If you know Faulty Towers, then Manuel's "Eventually" will be understood. "Say No More".

But my favorite and I think one of the greatest tv shows ever written is "The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin".
The original one with Leonard Rossiter, NOT the remake. This show has 21 half hour episode that are so tightly written that if you laugh at one line, you miss 3. I didn't get where I am today without knowing a great Brit show! Neither Mrs CJ or I have ever missed a Reggie"

On latest troll, may we seen the last of them. At least Vguy gave him whatfor, useless I agree, but you go Vman.

xtra - that Scarlet-Fire from yesterdays 30 days is very nice (from 89)

Let's hope all that want DP 3 have good hunting tomorrow.

But has anyone seen the release date for Dick's Vol 3 vinyl. Sure, we can order tomorrow, but when is it coming? I believe it was experience that kept us on the hook for over a year on some release,,, it did come, but you really had to wonder for a while there :-)

Hi Dennis, if past experience is any guide, the Real Gone vinyl version of DiP 3 will be released on its "for sale" date (which is Nov 14). I've bought a couple other Dicks from RG and they have shipped within a couple of days. I want to say they arrived within a week of purchase.

JimInMD, I can’t argue with your twofer of “Morning Dew” performances if we’re including songs Jerry and the band covered. I should have made it clearer that I meant ones he co-wrote.

Now I think I’ll go listen again to that great version of “Stella Blue” from Hamilton on 11/4/77 (DaP 12), and then maybe "Wharf Rat" from . . .

It's nice to see Bless Its Pointed Little Head getting some love. I have always love love loved that record.

It might be heresy to say so around these parts but I have it on pretty darned good authority from someone who was actually THERE that before 1969 Airplane was a better live band than the Dead. Listening to BIPLH this seems entirely plausible. Great playing from Jack and Jorma. Great tunes. And Gracie was unbelievable then. The Airplane crashed and burned and the Dead went on evolving and eventually became the greater, more influential band. But man, they were fun while they lasted.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to find a shrubbery.

I enjoyed this release more than I had expected. That said, I have only played it once so far as I am still working my way through the Friend of the Devils box.

As for the rest, it's shaping up to be the greatest shit show on earth.

That was all inferred, as the person I was replying to didn't specify what the exam was, and neither did I, though he did seem to imply it was a similar experience to what we should expect for the next 4 years. I thought my comeback was pretty funny. All it shows is that you guys can dish it out, but you can't take it.

But that's not even what I was referring to by "selective censorship." I was referring to a different post in which I provided ADR report numbers for several different common drugs and vaccines. The data I posted comes directly from the World Health Organization website.

That post was deleted, but for what purpose? It insulted no one. I find that interesting.

No side nose scratchin' here! We're knuckle deep up in that {proverbial} nostril!
Anyways, yeah! I am Gratefully satisfied, loving that full Help~Slip Frank's Tower with a subtle segue into an excellent Let it Grow! Admittedly, I start the pick at Hell in a Busket, and not because of sonic patches in the duo of Alabama~>Promised Land.
I have to say, after hearing the Alabama Getaway from Dave's #47, St. Louis at the Kiel, I can't hear any other versions.
In conclusion I love this autumn '83 pick, and am ecstatic to learn it was an old gold Taper's pick back in the day, I can understand why. The melange & melody of songs after an excellent Drums~Space is truly stellar, with extra long segues between the tunes.
I've got this pick blended well with the Dave's #39 'Philly' pick from the spring tour and the 1983 MsG box shows on a mega playlist. Dick's 6 fits in well all the same, as does the 10/31 bootleg I've got.

First off I kinda think I understand what this is even supposed to mean. Too bad I forgot which Dead thread I saw this on, probably this one because it got WaaaaaaaaY buried in the weeds. But anyways, as far as my collection goes which is many iTunes digital and Dead.net stuff since 2018~ish I would throw out there this.

Dave's #31 Chicago 12/3/79 to Dave's #47 St. Louis 12/9/79 {match up the extra 12/4 filler from each pick and place it accordingly} .....then on to Dick's #5 Oakland 12/26/79 and Road Trips Vol.3,No.1 12/28/79.

The June 1990 Eugene, OR Dave's #44 pick to the July Deer Creek Dave's #40 double show release pick would qualify as a mini box too I would imagine?

You got it RYXS. And while I was specifically referring to closely related releases in the DaP series you can expand it to include all the archival releases from a particular period.

In the thread for Friend of the Devils, for example, I mentioned "Turn on Your Lovelight: 11/2/69 to 2/2/70"; you could add 11/8/69 (DiP 16) to that one, as well as some shows - two I think - from the Download Series. (I don't own any downloads).

I know Dave gets a lot of stick for his spiel about "well this show was almost released back in ___ instead of ____". But perhaps some of these DaPs were originally meant to be part of a box set. Whatever the case I'm glad we now have them. And I'm looking forward to the third DaP from "Summer 1990" whenever it gets released.

Totally off topic but, who you got tomorrow? Mike Tyson or Jake Paul? Anyone else curious to see how it goes? Those early Tyson fights were something to see, he just knocked people out quick. Wondering if he can pull it off at 58 against a 27 year old. My 26 year old son argues that Tyson has no chance but given that I'm pretty much the same age as Tyson, I like to think he could win it. I may have to sign up for Netflix so that I can watch, could be interesting.

I really like this West LA, particularly what Bob is doing throughout :)

Man, I love those two late December '79 releases, to my ears they are unique and much better than even the beginning of the month.

The RSD 2019 Warfield disc is on Amazon for 20 bucks, which is confusing, but I was happy to finally get one. I don't think it's a reissue.

That was a brutal ten pages to scroll through.

First off, I like this pick fine. I had always written off 1983, but the Boise show and this one are pretty solid. I don't care for the Spring Philly show though or the Philly 1984 show. I think I am going to pass on the subscription this year for the first time since year 3 and pick up shows a la carte as needed. I was never a completist in my show collecting, just wanted good examples from years and I am feeling a bit saturated at this point. Plus, I sense economic headwinds on the horizon and collecting Dead shows may be a sacrifice to be made. Hope I am wrong about that. We'll see, maybe once they announce #54 I will change my mind.

I like the list of favorites in the DaP series. The Wichita 11/17/72 show was one I actually didn't expect to like and it is one of my favorites. One of my favorite moments in the series is in the Philly Spectrum show 1973-- what I call the 'Backwards Dark Star.' They do the 'space jam' after Truckin' and transition into a short little 4-minute Dark Star. The crowd seems to understand what they witnessed and roars after the verses. Love it.

Oh yeah, Wharf Rat-- that Nashville one is the very best, but the Scranton 1971 release reminded me how very fine the early versions are with Pigpen's haunting organ. Don't get me started on ballads, not a big fan. That said, I never considered Wharf Rat one of Jerry's ballads, just a good rock song.

Stealth boxes-- love that late March and early April 1973 one. He also put out a Fall 1977 stealth box with Colgate, Dekalb and Binghampton over the course of the series, plus there is at least one show in early November 1977 in the Dick's series. Lots of shows from Fall 1971 in the DaP series, too-- Felt Forum, Ann Arbor, Albuquerque.

A couple comments

First, I am a sucker for underdogs. Second, I'd like to think Mike Tyson today is a different man than Young Mike Tyson. He appears to have turned a corner at some point, probably when he was in prison. Not saying is has aways been a terrific human, but the new Mike is a little bit likeable.

He has been seen at least once hanging out with Bob Weir, which sort of ties this conversation to the band beyond description. Finally, there is at least one story floating around that he died while on acid and of course came back home probably with a different view on the details of life.

Plus, there's his cameo in the Hangover. I'm pulling for Mike.

Agreed. One of the best releases of either series. Nothing short of sublime. Thank you all for the heads up. Grabbed a copy and can’t wait until I purchase a turntable.

Many, many years ago I went to Fort Lauderdale for winter break. Towards the end of the week, we found ourselves on an extended bender at some generic tiki bar drinking mai tais by the gallon. Towards the end of the night, some obnoxious dude settles in at the bar and starts bothering everyone. Spewing nonstop about BS that nobody wanted to hear. I reached into my pocket to purchase another drink and realized that I was down to my last one dollar. Realizing my dilemma and assessing my options, I placed my one dollar bill on the bar and calmly slid it over to our unwanted guest. “Please go away” is all I said.
