Days Of Dead

Attics Of My Life
Hint:
A song that took a 17 year hiatus from the live set, returning for the final six years

Attics Of My Life was in the repertoire quite often in 1970, and a couple of times in 1972 before it was seemingly dropped for good. Thankfully, though, it returned in October 1989, and would be played 30 times 1989-1995.

    On to the show

That was a long hiatus and an apt return. Glad to be done before work. I have this show and the last two Greek and Uptown shows to finish up throughout the day today.

this is from the show before my 1st of the 55 gd shows i caught...
setlist deliciousness...

Love hearing straight from heads who were there, even if they were almost there or showed up late or just partied in the lot. It's so cool to hear when one of you identifies a show you were at, and even cooler if it was your first one! Having never seen Jerry myself, I and all the latter-day heads rely on your lore. It's our manna.
This version of Attics is perfectly sublime. We've boogied here before.

Finally a show I was at! I remember showing up just in time, or so I thought, as there was a logjam at the entrance and we heard half the opener while outside the front doors...

Wow!! I never win anything, but I woke up this morning to find I had won a calendar! Many thanks to Dave and the lovely dead fam on here - it's truly the high point of my year to take these deep dives. This was a sweet thing to see at a time in my life when I really need a lift.

Its a labor of love and fun, but it does not hurt to get a lil something something as a cherry on top.

So far, The Other One is the Grand Poobah these 30 Days, making no less than four (!) appearances (Days 5, 17, 20, and 24). We've also had three (!) Black Peters, and two each of Mississippi Half-Step, Black-Throated Wind, Looks Like Rain, Box of Rain, The Wheel, Bird Song, and China Rider. Great stand alones: Dark Star (Day 4), Candyman (Day 2), and St. Stephen>The Eleven>High Time (Day 13). What a motherlode of great Grateful music! Maybe we'll soon be hearing some fine renditions of Caution, China Doll, Playing In the Band, GDTRFB, Terrapin Station, and Lost Sailor>Saint of Circumstance, too. Thank you David!!! Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!

I've been doing the 30 Days since the first year and I've never had as many hits as I have this year. Of course, a lot of that is the selections being very narrow choices. But some of it has been changing my routine. I always used Setlist and Archive.org before. Last year I started using Jerrybase and Relisten. It has made all the difference.

I did the exact same powerup from setlist+archive to jerrybase+relisten. A gamechanger indeed!

This is my first year (just was not in the know). I am using Grateful Stats to give me all the venues where the song(s) occurred throughout history and Relisten or Archive to give me the audio of the shows in question. I am "Generally" pretty good at narrowing things down to a 2 to 4 year time span with my ears and knowledge of historical cues. I think when this month is over I am going to go back through all the past 30 Days of Dead and fine turn my ear/knowledge. The act of searching is uncovering many Gems that's fer sure.
Edit: Bummers looks like we can't go back and listen to the past years of 30 Days of Dead :-(

besides the fact that one of our regulars has a full excel sheet for all 15 years. i’m not that great at compressing or zipping but if u send me email i have each year for most as a album with the whole 30 days for each year at least as far back as 2014. i could try to copy and compress them for you or burn cd and mail them. might take some time but do able.
let me know what u think

to driftin and dreamin and others--

Just found a few days ago that perhaps all the past 30 Days were posted last year, by individual year, by someone onto the Grateful Dead Collection on archive dot o r g.

I only spent about 5 mins of my life seeking all the Attics to find the how this one was sung.
One secret I will tell, this was never my favorite era of the band.
Still had many shows in this time period where I dreaming lay amazed.
Attics is such a beautiful touching song. Cannot be the easiest tune to sing live.
Thanks again David. Only 5 More Days. Where does the Time Go?

I thought for sure it was a 72-73 show until my buddy came over and said it sounded like a 78 show. Crazy how your mind bends you. I'm usually very good at nailing the year. Yesterday humbled my ego. Nice work David! Love this!

Started too far in the future, so ended up working back in time. Narrowed it down to five, found it on the second try. As others have said, I'm getting good at this. Been playing since year one, but this is by far my best ever.

Today’s Attics just cleaved my poor heart in two. A stunning version that I’m now telling all those that I love to listen to asap.

Love all you beauties here. Peace my friends.

That phaser/chorus effect swoosh when you get the 2 audio players to sync up is always fun. Don't know much about this show. Never got to this venue but had friends that ventured and said it was a blast to see a show there.

Though I don't have much experience with this song and had kind of forgotten it until today. But it always draws me in and bends my ear to listen so to speak. I do always wonder who the "You" is in the lyrics, or who Hunter wrote those lyrics for, if he wrote them to anyone/thing at all. Too late to ask him now. Thanks anyway Bob.

the annotated dead lyrics book i have gives a brief mention of Hunter's thoughts on the song and a little Alice in Wonderland reference. Doesn't really answer your question though. Although sounds like it's not meant to be answered.

other topic i saw on here was using jerrylist and relisten, i have always used deadlist and archives. might have to give it a try, although i have an affinity for the archives, been digging around in there since before the 30 days even started. i'd feel like a traitor for going somewhere else.
this one was a giveaway pretty much. some other good tunes worth a listen at this show.

Thanks hornsby. I too reference that great resource by Dodd , but like you said doesn't really define the "you" of the lyrics but I think that's the way Hunter liked it. And come to think of it, me too. Anyway, thanks for your reply.

Another great version. Already overdozin’ on all these treasures and still more to come. Thanksgiiving
came early this year!

Jerrylist is pretty decent, also Relisten. But i’m still digging the Setlist Program and its Archive links as I’ve always done. It’s more fun!

Also (following on my reply to driftin and dreamin) I suggest that anyone on this site here that uses the Archive should donate $$ support, especially since being recently hacked and offline for a few days (noted by others here); they could use the help now to improve security, and otherwise do depend on user support for the huge multitude of resources they provide.

I was lucky enough to be at the Warlocks show that brought the song back after 17 years and then the Charlotte show a couple weeks later.
Today's version is quite beautiful, as they all are.

I dont have the words to adequately describe Hunters lyrics . This song has meant many different things to me over time.

When I had no wings to fly, you flew to me.

Apropos of nothing, does anyone know an early 70s show where Bobby yells "Knickers, knickers!" I remember it but I can't recall the show at all.
OK, for those of you who think that's too much, it's just for anyone lingering late in the game looking so deal with it. But I am serious about trying to remember where Bobby said it!
