Dave's Picks Vol. 52: The Downs at Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM (9/11/83)

I remember the venue almost like and old fort with roses everywhere. We came to the site and Wavy Gravy showed us where to camp. Ken Kesey was here as well as a couple other big figures of the counterculture. I think because of Mickey's 40th. During drums a double rainbow appeared. Every time it looked like rain the band would stop and then come back even stronger from their breaks. I saw more outdoor shows in 83 than all the years combined. I have goose bumps even typing this from the memories. - xxuncle johnxx, Dead.net

One of the best memories I have were these 2 shows. During the break there was a lightning storm behind the stage, followed by a rainbow and then an awesome 2nd set. Morning Dew with a Cold Rain, Phil singing encore. Most of my tour buddies went home after Red Rocks and I tortured them with the Santa Fe tapes. Nothing beats the magic of a great GD outdoor show. "It all bleeds into one." - grateful hawaiian, Dead.net

In between sets, I remember it rained... and early on in the second set, there was an amazing rainbow directly over the stage behind the band. I don't believe they saw it, but I'm sure they heard about it. "Let It Grow" was awesome! - Johnny_A, Dead.net

The pot at the end of this rainbow is mighty fine, indeed. Our final Dave's Picks release for 2024 features the complete unreleased show from The Downs at Santa Fe, Sante Fe, NM, 9/11/83 (fun fact, it was Mickey's 40th birthday) with just a squidge of 9/10/83 to round things out. A true trader's treat, this one is solid all around from the lively first set featuring soon-to-be minted 80s classics like "Hell In A Bucket" and "West L.A. Fadeaway" to the return of "Help>Slip>Franklin's," the incredible 2nd set surprise of "Let It Grow," and adventurous takes on "He's Gone,""Wang Dang Doodle," and "Morning Dew." It's all well played, my friend, well played.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 52: SANTA FE, NM 9/11/83 was recorded by Dan Healy and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

I did not listen to it ahead of this but I did listen to 9/10 which is a friggin smoke show I think, seems it will never see a release now.

Edit: I remember not loving the sound of 27 at the time...

I realized while listening to the first set of 4/8/78 just now that we in America at this point in time are LUCKY, in that the ill-intentioned people have to actually stand up on a stage in front of all and declare their bad intentions. In many places, harmful policies are brokered in back rooms and alleys, then foisted upon an unsuspecting public.

So most of us here have an opportunity not afforded many folks throughout history--to pony up some dough (ACLU), get off our butts, and go DO something in response to the forecasted darkness. Throughout history, and in many places currently, no response was/is allowed.

Democracy allows what just happened, but also allows a response, if only we'll be part of it, and that means not just doom-scrolling and complaining to like-minded friends. Not everyone was or is so lucky.

Didn't take very long. Turn the water off. Get out the hex wrench and pop the handle off. Take the old washer out and pull a new one out of that bag I've had in the garage for about 20 years. Batten down the mizzenmast and you're good.

Now it's fixed. Felt good, Feels good every time I look at it and it's not dripping. So that was one small good thing that happened today.

The ‘early bird’ comments page still works, it’s only the full price version that’s missing!

Edit: You have to use the drop down menu because the front page link to early bird ordering doesn’t work anymore.

The IMPREC kickstarter looks like it’s got over the target so you should be getting the album. I’ll stick to the CD I bought a long time ago.

Edit
There are still a few hours to go if anyone else feels like contributing.

The kickstarter is a way that the record label IMPREC are using to raise $40000 to repress Greyfolded on vinyl. Since they have hit that target the repress should happen. There are still a few hours left to take part in the pre-order process. Try typing greyfolded kickstarter into your choice of search engine and you should find it. It’s likely that once they do commit to the repress they will accept further orders on the IMPREC website. Their website is always worth a look since they produce a lot of interesting stuff. The release may also turn up on other sites but they don’t always.

I got a Black Friday release delivered earlier today - a vinyl release of Tangerine Dream live in Glasgow 11/20/74.

I have been subscribing for a few years now and I think I recall that the 2nd quarterly release {#54 with bonus disc} announcements come with the December online newsletter. That will be the second week in December? If I'm wrong someone will correct my statement.

Anyways,.... I used that nationwide corporate holiday discount on one of them Earth Day shirts I had been eyeing on for awhile now, since April. My only complaint is that the one I bought should've been a desert sage green to go with the Joshua Tree.

My, admittedly faulty, memory says that the second release is announced just before the subscription window closes. Probably in December.
Speaking of faulty memory I recently bought a deck to play my very old vinyl. It was either that or give it away. I dug out a Sarah Ogun Gunning album expecting it to have a version of ‘I am a Union Woman’ on it. If I did bet I’d have thought it was a sure thing. Of course, it didn’t. It did have ‘ I hate the Capitalist System’ though. Searching my memory I realised the track I expected was on a Ewan MaColl and Peggy Seeger album but the years have created false equivalences.

That makes sense. After the Early Bird special ends, but while you can still order the subscription.

Otherwise, why announce it if not to entice subscriptions. So sometime in the next few weeks.

I have a good feeling about 54. '69 would be fine, but I'm hoping '73. I guess we'll see.

Just a trippy title is all no more there, I have no insider information here, just speculations. Though by my calculations there is a strong possibility that for 2025 we may see both a release from 1969 & 1973. If not `69 then maybe autumn '70? That era I am still hazy on but think one is coming from there either way. Banana Box Boogie on New Speedways!

If the "whispers on the breeze" thing is meant to be an actual clue, the only song I can think of that it could be a reference to is Broken Arrow. Which according to the Internet was first played by the GD on 2.23.93 at the Oakland Coliseum in a show that featured Ornette Coleman on four songs. I would think Ornette's presence complicates the legalities involved, but I suppose if Dave was determined to break into the Vince era, he could do worse than to put that one out.

I'd sure rather have some '69, or '73. But it's not up to me, now is it?

In any case, the second title in each year's subscription series usually gets announced shortly after the 'early bird' discount expires. So pretty, pretty soon.

Last five!

Flaming Lips: Clouds Taste Metallic
Jefferson Airplane: Volunteers
GOGD: Reckoning
Karajan/BPO: Mahler 9
Joe Henderson: Power to the People

I bet the Coleman estate would have no problem authorizing Dave & Co. to release the 93 show he sat in on. It would give them a little scratch (not much), but more importantly would broaden his legacy and expose more people to his music.

Of course, nobody knows for sure but the stakeholders of each group.

Shows played in Buffalo:

03/17/70- Kleinhans Music Hall - Buffalo, NY
03/31/73- War Memorial Auditorium - Buffalo, NY
09/26/73- War Memorial Auditorium - Buffalo, NY
05/09/77- War Memorial Auditorium - Buffalo, NY
01/20/79- Shea's Theater - Buffalo, NY
11/09/79- War Memorial Auditorium - Buffalo, NY
09/26/81- War Memorial Auditorium - Buffalo, NY
07/04/86- Rich Stadium - Buffalo, NY

The 77 show has been released. This can only mean the soundboard for 1/20/79 has turned up and we are finally going to get one of the 79 Dark Stars cleaned up and Normanized.

That would be something...

That would be something…but we only whisper about such things very late at night…

77, 89, and p/o 11/1/79 are out.
wish they’d done all of 11/1.

Don’t forget Rich 90, 92 & 93.

Wouldn’t Kleinhans be something!!! The holy grail?
3/31/73, 7/16/90, and mos def 9/26/81 are worthy!
9/26/73 is ok, but not the “horn” show I’d pick.

Fun game though, unless your a niners fan. Its been unfortunately a frustrating year for them!
Almost makes me miss it back in the tundra…not really lol,
but I used to live 3-4 miles from the stadium BITD.
VIKS are fun too, but I don’t think my heart could take it if I wasn’t once removed lol
They fortunately usually pull it off, but it can be hard to watch lol

Edit: or Hell, I’d even take 1/10/79 and a good chunk of set 2 from 1/20/79 on a for disc, if it got it out, but alas, don’t think I’ll ever get any 1/20 : (

Filler and bonus disc 11-3-91.

Of course, there’s a lot of guests between those two shows that would have to agree to the release:
Ken (I suspect that he would agree)
Gary
Popper
Young
Fogerty
Baez

Getting all those legalities worked out would probably be harder than getting the ABB stakeholders to agree to a release.
But that did finally happen with 6-10-73.
So, an alternate 54 + bonus disc is 7-27,28-73. HendrixFreak is due.

I have really enjoyed this release. Had heard about Santa Fe 83 for long time but never listened to them. Great show. The Althea and He’s Gone are two highlights for me. I love a He’s Gone with an outro jam. The filler is also killer on this. Really nice !
I was very happy with my subscription this year. Last years shows didn’t do it as well for me. I really enjoyed the Frost 85 set. Another show I had never heard. Lots of highlights there. Love a good Crazy Fingers.
The DP series has been really heavy on 77 and 71 but I enjoyed those shows this year also. I liked this years 77 shows. Lots of great music there. Listening recently to the 71 release and I really enjoy the third disc from Pittsburgh. Solid year. Thank you Dave and Company!
I subscribed at early bird for next year. I’m stoked on the 76 release - first Dave’s from Ohio ?? So many great shows there…
I hope others here are correct. I would love a 69 release for the second show this year. My wish would be two dark stars and one love light and not the other way around. LOL
Hope you all are well. Keep the faith. Music heals. Turn it up!

I also enjoyed this year's selections - including disc 2 of Scranton and Especially disc 3 from Pittsburgh + the Frost shows and Santa Fe ... Still wading through 1978 here. Speaking of which, 4/14/78 is, to my ears, the most enjoyable show in the box since the first one. I don't know if it's a case of absence making the heart grow fonder, but everything on the first cd sounds top notch. The show the others were leading towards perhaps. Maybe it's just me.

Too bad they can't cancel that '76 show for 53 and replace it with ALL of 12 6 73. My apologies go out to all the 1976 fans.

Road Trips vol 4 no 3 bonus disc includes about 77 minutes of that December 73 show, including the massive 43-minute Dark Star.
But that entire show needs a space on the shelf.

Maybe that's what they're planning for 54 with bonus material.

A big 'who knows' shrug comin' at ya. More likely: not gonna happen.

Plus, we all know 1969 and 1970 are glowing in some kiln ready to be fully fired!
