    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    Concertgebouw fan?
What's the significance of the cover of the 5/10/72 Amsterdam show? A fan with a screw loose? Hmm! What does the B stand for?

    Disc 52, France
That is where I am now. Lille Fairgrounds, France, the Dead playing for free, really cold weather, Pigpen in a really thick coat, no Steinway for Keith, but they managed to get him a Blünther and the story says he was delighted. Is that the reason why he's notably louder in the mix when compared to the rest of the previous sets? You can notice lots of details and beautiful things he plays that were buried in the mix in previous concerts. But, alas, Bob's guitar is lower (at least during the first two songs). There is some inconsistency in the mixing department, I think. Don´t get me wrong, I think Mr.Norman does an amazing job (I still can´t believe the pristine sound of some of the Road Trips volumes, or the 2-track recording of the Winterland 1973 set he mastered), but maybe he was rushing against time in this opportunity. Mixing over 70 hours of music must be really hard, even when you have months to do it. Anyway, overall he did a fantastic show, I'm just saying it is a pity it wasn't done better, because I'm sure it could have been the case (I would have liked the box set's book to feature an article written about the mixing process. Thankfully, a nice interview was available here on the web).Oddly enough, after listening to so many versions, I started to like two numbers I was not very fond of quite much: OMST and Sugar Magnolia (the rocker live version). The Dark Stars and Other Ones are generally mind-blowing (and some of then even much more than that). It is a huge amount of music, and there is a lot to be said. Got to keep listening, gotta go.

Now that we are getting the boxes, and for the purposes of iTunes, any idea's where to find links to the rest of them? Back on the top of page 31 of this thread, cbs73 posted a link to nice scans of the covers from the puzzles.

I received the email regarding the European shipping this morning, which is great news, although I'm still a little confused how it's going to save me money, as I hadn't figured on the VAT. Maybe it will be less than the normal Customs charge we get. Anyhow, I've not seen any pre-authorisation on my card yet ..... Tony (UK)

Tony You would always have had to pay duty and VAT - from memory ( out of work at moment , so don't have access to Customs tariffs ) , duty is 2.7% and VAT is certainly 20% in UK. Should be savings as , presumably , they are sending one bulk shipment to Amsterdam , paying duty and VAT on the whole kit and caboodle there , and then onforwarding the individual packages to recipients. Once the goods are cleared in Amsterdam , they are then in free circulation in the EU - so no further charges apply . So we should at least save the GBP 8.00 Royal Mail handling charge , plus the shipping costs are presumably cheaper than $85 as individual packages and some of this at least will be passed on. From what I can make out Dutch VAT is 19% only , so a percentage point saved there as well. Finally the goods will be trackable - that dioesn't work out for USPS shipments to the UK. All in all sounds like we are winning around for once - just a shame it isn't $2 to the Pound this year! Bring it on! Cheers Duncan

Even though I gave updated credit card information to Dead.net customer service last month and had seen the "pre-authorization" charge against me credit limit, I received this e-mail from Dead.net last night: "Unfortunately, the credit/debit card that was used to purchase the E72 Boxed Set was unable to be processed." Looks like I'll have to call again (and again?) to get this straightened out. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!! Best Wishes-Jimmy

Hopefully a quicker delivery than USPS as well , when they finaly ship. I seem to remember they did a similar thing with the Complete Fillmore box using a courier company - that time though they sent it via Norway if I recall correctly , so we still had to pay taxes on arrival at UK (Norway not being part of the EU) - so this should be even better. I had the pre-authorization done a week or two ago. It's now gone. There's no charge pending or posted. There's no email saying that it was shipped. There is no tracking number. When I called Customer Service they said it had not yet been shipped. I am one of the lucky first 3,000. Therefor, all signs point to the conclusion that it was delivered yesterday and someone stole it off my front porch. :-) LOL. It's just a joke. Will see it when I see it, if not before.

Already 2 steamer trunks for sale on Ebay. Just bringing it up in case you want to see more pictures of how the trunk looks. It is great that the release is ahead of schedule. I was guessing it would have been late September before anything was shipped.

Since we have to tag these tunes ourselves when converting to digital mp3s does anyone know if the individual artwork for each concert will be made available? Someone earlier posted a link to the ones that were on this site as puzzles but that was only a few of them, not all 22.

It's just that the power is out in my neighborhood from Irene and the sound of Generators echos throughout... I want to wait for nothing but me and the crickets before I give a listen to ANY of it... The packaging is nice... Thank you for the warning about the weight of the books in the top of the trunk, so PLEASE open slowly and remove the books first! Otherwise, my tag name used was "J.Garcia" so it would appear that this was his trunk full of music... I must say, it's a little cheaper than I thought it would be... I thought there would be more use (or 'better' use of ) J.Garcia... like a baggage tag or something, but no, it's just typed on a sticker that adhears to the front of the Trunk... Again, it's the MUSIC that I paid for in it's pristine quality, so I got what I paid for... it also comes with TWO GREAT books... which I have thumbed through (in the blackout! under a Flashlight!) so, without giving this a listen, I cannot tell you much more... Nothin' left to do but :-) :-) :-)

The box is very nice, the books are very nice. But whomever among you out there wondering if the all the music edition is worth it, I actually say unequivocally this is essential to your collection and you should scrape together the money for it. The sound is insane. I am just getting through the first set of 4/7/72, and I have to say the highlights so far are a Greatest Story opener that stampedes out of the gate, the China Rider where Phil, now suddenly much more up front and articulated in the mix as Bob and Jerry, jumps in with just brilliant contrapuntal melodies to Jerry and Bob, this one smokes, and Loser. Now listening to Playin'. The sound on these discs is just sooo goos, and the band at this point in time was just at the top of their game. I'm not sure if I've heard anything I like better from this group, but of course I was always a huge Eurpoe 72 fan. But it really is just brilliant playing now brought to life with these incredible recordings. Box or no box, books or no books, worth every penny.

It would be nice if the website had 600x600 versions of all the covers (for all releases, not just E72). Once I get my E72 box I'll be scanning them all. I have 300dpi scans for most other GD CD releases for use in my iTunes library.

Once again dead.net customer service drops the ball...I called yesterday to check my status as I had not seen my card charged...the guy on the line told me my box had shipped and I would see it this Friday...then I received an email stating my card didn't go through...huh? so I called ups only to find out the box is being shipped to a totally different address than mine...I updated my card in february at customer service as my original card was comprimised shortly after I bought the box...they said everything was updated...these guys are truly incompetent! By the way, the automated message on cal dead has got to be the most annoying thing ever!

The first time I called the "customer service rep" didn't even ask for my order number. So my wife called and got someone who actually had the brain to ask for an order number. And yes, that automated message (which turns up every 75 seconds) is a piece of crap. And I was also told my card was updated when I called earlier this month. Guess what, it wasn't.

Wow...I'm really sorry to hear about those who've had difficulties with this order, because I've had nothing but good experiences. After the snafu in January, I had to have my reservation code reset, which happened without a hitch. Last month, I had to update my credit card info, and the guy in custserv was able to find my order quickly (using only my last name) and make the change. Even though I got no email saying the box was shipped (and my cc company doesn't show pre-auths online), it arrived today and looks beautiful! Now...it's just after noon, and I have the rest of the day to listen!! Thanks to all at dead.net!

First time post, wanted to pass along what I know... No shipping confirmation, so I called this AM and customer service rep told me it shipped Friday 8/26. She gave me a tracking number, and said it will arrive Thursday 9/1. Checked UPS and confirmed--it is en route to Sacramento! So I will be greeted with the much anticipated box set when I return Saturday from Disneyland with my family. At that point I will truly enter The Magic Kingdom!

I just received mine from UPS and I am still stunned at the workmanship that went into this steamer trunk. While I haven't a chance to play any of the 73 CD's, I just had to write about the packaging. WOW does not begin to describe it. Both books look to be incredible as well. So glad this upcoming weekend is a holiday weekend...tons of CD's to listen to and books to read...yeeehaw! Excellent job Dead.net and Rhino :-)

My UPS driver came to my workplace today like he does everyday and this time he says, "I think this package is hobby related". I nearly creamed my pants right then and there. Sure enough, the beast had arrived and its beautiful. Hats off to all involved with the packaging and music. First class--job well done. I almost didn't get this because I failed to complete my order the first time I received my original code. I ended up with a second chance because someone else screwed up and I am of course...GRATEFUL! Looks great, sounds even better. Thank you Rhino & Grateful Dead Productions!!!

Thanks to everyone who helped bring this project to life, especially Rhino, David Lemieux, Jeff Norman and, obviously, the Grateful Dead. I like others had to change my cc that I gave with my original order. There was a security problem with a merchant so my bank shut my original card down. When we got the email in July, I called an made the change to a different card. On 8/23, I saw that I still did not have an authrization on my card, so I called to make sure that when I gave the new card all went through ok. The CS rep I spoke with on the 23rd was the same one who took my new card number. He even went so far as to read me the last 4 digits of my card and my expiration date. So, today, with still no authorization or charge, I called again. I spoke with Sarah, she said that since I have one of the DN order numbers, she would have to email someone higher up to get the status of my order. She said she would call me back when she found out anything. I of course was skepitcal of this, but she promised she would. Low and behold, she did call me back, kudos to sarah for doing a great job. It turns out that the person higher up said my card was not valid. If you've read this far, you'll know that I checked and checked again to make sure that the new card number I gave them was good. Even though both times I checked, they said it was fine, obviously it was not. So I ended up giving Sarah the number again, and she my box should ship soon. Moral of the story, if you have seen or heard nothing on the box, and they can't give you a tracking number when you call, best check to make sure they didn't screw up your cc info.

Mine came out of the blue today. No e-mail, no tracking, no fee deducted (yet) from account. As I thought, it was more than worth the wait. Nice box/artwork, books are really cool, especially the hardback which is quite nicely done - looking forward to reading the extensive essays. Most importantly, from what little I've heard thus far, it sounds superb! Many thanks to all who put their efforts into this and thanks for having the guts to do something on this massive of a scale This will provide untold hours of enjoyment. Worth the wait and worth the dough for sure.

What a pleasant surprise yesterday when the box arrive. Listened to the first show this morning. What recording is excellent, the band sounds great, the boxed set is amazing. The energy is so evident in the recording. It's like looking back in time. I look forward to spending plenty of time exploring this amazing release. The CD notes are nice too. I didn't realize that the Dead were supposed to play the Rainbow. I ended up seeing them there in '81 on their last pass through before it closed. Congratulations to all involved in this amazing collection of Dead music. Thank you, thank you, thank you. This is going to be like Christmas Day for a month or more until I work my way through all this. Yeah!

Just opened mine. It came from Warner Music Group, Olyphant, PA -- instead of Dead Fulfillment,CA. When I saw the return address I couldn't figure out the heck it was. I thought someone must have sent something to the wrong address. And it was so heavy. I didn't remember ordering anything from Warner Music Group. I was flumixed. Then I opened the box. HOLLY F!

Jamming London 4/7/72 right now with my Bose headphones, China>Rider. I also never received an E-mail, no fee on my Visa, nothing. I called customer service yesterday, they told me my box had NOT shipped yet. They still are trying to pull this thing together. The UPS dude just showed up. I'm very happy with the box, very nicely done. The book is first class for sure, looking forward to some reading tonight. I'm a happy camper, been waiting since January on this day, it was a stealth delivery. Jam on my fellow Deadheads. I made a Facebook page a few months ago for this box set, please join to talk about the amazing music we will be listening too for a very long time. I posted a few good photos too. If you are dealing with a credit card mishap or other problems, be patient. I received an email last month verifying card info. I called to change my card and was assured my new info would be used. After receving the "Unfortunately..." email last night, I called, was on hold for over and hour. Dropped customer service a line, went to bed. Today after being on hold for an hour and 10 minutes, I finally spoke with a rep who again took my new info, apologized and assured that we were good now. He also assured me that I would be receiving the personalized set I had ordered and there will be no more problems. I have no choice but to be cautiously optimistic...What else can I do? I NEVER have complained before, but all I know is that when customer service was handled internally, I placed at LEAST 50 orders since 1991, and I had 1 problem. Dick's Picks 33 arrived late (2 months) They sent me #34 for FREE to make up for it and I never had another problem. Now that Rhino's in charge, nothing but a shameful mess.

I saw the E-bay thing too. There is a Road Trips # 1, Bonus CD 1 on E-bay that is already up to $52.00, amazing price for one CD, still 8 days on the auction. A few years from now one of these boxes will bring 3 grand EZ. Guess some folks are just in it for the $. I'll bet Rhino will post some too, soon they all will be gone. I'm loving mine, it's priceless to me. Coconut Phil, living Free.
