    Europe '72:
    The Complete Recordings -
    All The Music Edition

Our Europe '72 boxed set is now officially sold out, with all 7,200 boxes now gone! We can't thank you enough for your support, for having faith in the project and taking the plunge to purchase this unprecedented release. Despite the fact that it's going to be a bit of a wait before it arrives on your door step, we are sure you'll be blown away with the results.

We are now offering the All-The-Music edition of Europe '72, which includes all of the music recorded on the tour, with each show in its own individual package, complete with its own liner notes by Dead scholars such as David Gans, Blair Jackson, Steve Silberman, Gary Lambert and others, as well as by attendees of some of the shows. You'll get 73 CDs and over 70 hours of prime Grateful Dead.

    IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC...

Because you dared dream this might happen one day… Because you went down to the Gypsy Woman and offered up your first-born to try to make it happen… Because there are enough passionate Dead Heads at Rhino/GD who thought it might be cool for this to happen… It’s happening! Coming in September is a gargantuan EUROPE ’72 MEGA-BOX SET containing ALL 22 SHOWS of what is arguably the greatest tour the Grateful Dead ever played, on a whopping and clearly cosmic 73 DISCS (over 70 hours of music!). Bet you didn’t see that comin’!

Really, at this point we probably don’t need to lay on too much hype about how wonderful the music is: Chances are, if you’re even considering buying a copy of this enormous box, you already know how amazing the Dead’s tour of Europe in April and May of 1972 was. To review briefly, though, the Dead’s first tour outside of North America took them to all sorts of historic and unusual venues in England, Denmark, West Germany, France, Holland and even tiny Luxembourg. Many members of the Dead “family” came along on what was really an extended working vacation that was designed to both expose the Dead to new audiences and also reward the band for their unlikely conquest of America during the preceding two years. As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

This was a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums — Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a year since the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as a member of the touring band. There was a ton on new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 (after “Skull & Roses” was out) and during the spring of ’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “He’s Gone,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble on Rose,” “One More Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen’s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Brokedown Palace,” “Cumberland Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Bertha,” “Not Fade Away,” et al — and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers — the Europe ’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.” And that’s leaving out a truckload of other tunes, too! There wasn’t a clunker show in the bunch, and many are acknowledged today as classics. No doubt you already have some favorites.

Through the years, there have been a few releases of material from the Europe tour—starting with the 3-album Europe ’72 which knocked our socks off in the fall of that year, and followed many years later by material from a pair of German shows and the fantastic 4-CD Stepping Out, culled from the group’s eight shows in England. Incredibly, though, only one full show from the tour has come out previously: the excellent 4/24 concert in Dusseldorf, Germany, released as Rockin’ the Rhein in 2004.

Until now, that is. Jeffrey Norman, who has been the primary mixer of Dead archival multi-track material for the past 15 years (Fillmore West ’69, Ladies and Gentlemen…, Rockin’ the Rhein, Nightfall of Diamonds, etc.) has spent many months toiling over the 16-track masters from the tour, and will continue working on the mixes through the Winter and Spring, employing the high-tech Plangent Processes transfer and restoration tools, trying to get every show to sound “just exactly perfect” (as Bob Weir says) for this release. You might think you’ve heard that intense “Dark Star” > “Sugar Mag” > “Caution” from Copenhagen, but I guarantee you’ve never heard it sound this alive! Mastering to HDCD specs is two-time Grammy-winning engineer David Glasser of Airshow Mastering. Needless to say, all the songs that turned up on previous Europe compilations will be appear in their proper show contexts, and in the case of songs from the Europe ’72 album, without overdubs that were added later (where possible).

So dig deep, raid the penny jar, take a weekend job at Jack-in-the-Box, beg your kindly ol’ grandma for some of your inheritance early… Yes, it’s an extravagance, but jeez, you (or your loved one) deserve it! This is way cool.

    On the sleeves...
Since it hasn't been posted in a while, to get the discs out of the sleeves, all you need to do is squeeze on both sides of the case in the middle, with thumb on one side, other fingers on the other side, and tilt the case down while squeezing. The CD's slide right out to the point that they are easy to pull out the rest of the way. Haven't ripped a one yet. I can't remeber who posted this originally, but it's somewhere back in the 40's or 50's. Whoever it was, good work!

    A possible solution
After pulling out the first CD and ripping the cover apart a bit, for the second CD I took a nipper and wired it with plaster. It's still a bit hard to pull out the CD's but also a bit easier with that solution. And the plaster prevents the CD's to be damaged. Micke

A wonderful treat - just got
A wonderful treat - just got my Europe 72 complete box set 5 days ago - so I've been busy importing CDs to play through my Apple digital audio system (iMac - iTunes Apple Lossless codec - airport digital out to my hifi). The music is fantastic, so is the documentation that accompanies each Disc. It is a really thrilling experience to own a part of the Grateful Dead archive like this and it adds a variety that means it is much easier to listen to more Dead from my favourite era. The box has it's draw backs but is really just a collectors piece which is a bonus anyway. It arrived Monday morning and really impressed my 3 year old son - he described it as "treasure" and later we listened to the first few tracks and he asked me if that was "from the treasure chest". But remember a treasure chest is really about the treasure not the quality of the container it is in. Thanks everyone for a great release and thanks to the Grateful Dead for being the Grateful Dead

your point about opening the case is well taken. I did mention it a few days ago saying to open it up like a steamer trunk thereby showing (as the youngsters at work are all too willing to point out) I'm an old man. I don't think they make steamer trunks anymore

Pretty soon no one will be making books anymore either, so "open like a book" may elicit more than a few blank stares back at you. Open with the handle end up! As it was packed in the box with the "This End Up" warning...

Yeah, it's quite a site to behold when opened like a steamer trunk. Clearly, this was the intent of the design, as the book sleeve suggests. Makes the whole package much sturdier as well. Hell, I just like LOOKING at the thing!

As a thank you to all the Dead Heads who help make this collection happen, the first 3,000 fans to order will have their copy personalized with a name requested by the purchaser. Once the 3,000 order goal is reached by April 1, Dead.net will continue to take orders through the summer but will limit production of the collection to a maximum of 7,200 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered. Music is great though :)

I won a copy of the All The Music Edition in the sweepstakes on the GD Facebook page and haven't received the music yet, but did receive a nice little package of ephemera a couple of months ago. I already gave away the remix of the original Europe 72 CDs to a non-deadhead buddy of mine, and the Union Jack t-shirt to my girlfriend, and I've got the poster from the NY Historical Society exhibition slated to go to a poster-collector friend of mine, but I've still got the Europe 72 rainbow foot button and embroidered patch that aren't spoken for, so what I'd like to do hear is offer up these two small items as miracles for anyone who'd like them. First come, first served seems like the only fair way to do this, so that's my offer: if you'd like a Europe 72 rainbow foot button and embroidered patch, post a response to this post and we'll take it from there. Oh, and thanks to the GD and Rhino for hooking me up with a copy of the box set; I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I can sympathize with Micke and other non-U.S. heads as they patiently wait for their box o' goodies. I don't know if it's any consolation, but there are plenty of us in the states who are still "without" as well. I just checked on my order (one of the first 3000) - it has not shipped yet, and I live near San Francisco, the Dead's home turf. But, I understand the enormity of the task at hand: 7200 large boxes to be shipped, weighing a total of about 47 TONS. That's a lot of sweet music to spread around the globe! If they manage to send out 300 per day (seems like a lot to me), it would take 24 days to get everything out the door. Anyway, I figure it will be at least another week before I see mine. In the meantime, I have plenty of tunes to occupy my brain as I ponder the cosmic significance of receiving two, or, if I dare to dream, THREE silica gel packets!

Of course it's to no consolation that many of you US-heads haven't gotten your order. And I agree, 7200 boxes are a lot of boxes to send out but in the mail all of us European heads recieved, we were informed that all of our boxes should be shipped together from the US and then reshipped indvidually from a warehouse in Amsterdam. In the mail it was said that once our credit cards were charged, the box would be shipped. That's probably why one wonders because it normally takes 2-4 business days to get packages within western Europe. Intrigued by bolo24's comment that he'd checked his order. Am I missing something here - I've had a couple of gos at checking my order status, but the order tracking seems to be restricted to orders placed in the last 45 days, and this one, of course, was a lot more than that.... Is there another way of finding out?

Micke, they didn't say when they were shipping them to Europe. But if Hippo - just above - got his in Switzerland, then we could be getting ours any day now. And, it's not surprising he had to pay tax; the Swiss don't want to be part of the EU, and the VAT point made by GDP was related to VAT paid in advance for EU countries. It doesn't mean we won't pay, but we'll pay paying it directly to GDP. Oh, I'm getting so impatient here in the French Alps...

So, which is it: "Hurts Me Too" or "It Hurts Me Too"? I think all the titles on this box set go with "Hurts Me Too". For everything up to this point I've decided to use "It Hurts Me Too" and there also happens to be a WikiPedia page for that title: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Hurts_Me_Too

Got mine last week 2380/7200. It's a beauty, but the music is the true attraction here. Sound is brilliant. I thought the 1st 2 shows were great but 4/11 (show #3) was a scorcher from start to finish. The Truckin> Other One is mind melting, and is my new favorite. 4/14 is legendary, the wildest Feelin Groovy jam ever. But by 4/16 I think they're feeling a little logey. It all seems slightly more laid back than the previous shows. Its really fun to go through the tour like this, and say "Hey this is the first Dire Wolf of the tour." Were all these shows available as sdbds or are some of them never before heard? Anyone know? I also like listening to a show and then saying, "Hey this is the Cumberland from Europe '72." So far I've found the Cumberland and the Brown Eyed Women. Hope everyone gets their own real soon--All good things in all good time

Some of the Europe 72 shows were available in high quality, some weren't. One thing's for sure, now they are all available in the finest quality any of us have heard. If you're interested, here's a list of performances from Europe '72. You found Cumberland and Brown Eyed Women- I think this is accurate: 5/3 China/Rider, Tennessee Jed and Jack Straw 5/4 Sugar Magnolia 5/10 He's Gone 5/24 Hurts Me Too and You Win Again 5/26 Truckin and Morning Dew

Well, let's hope the boxes will arrive to all of us any day now! :-D I hope you're right about the VAT. Due to my first order confirmation I was going to pay $535.00 including postage from the US but my credit card is reserved for $640.00, so I do hope no extra charges will be added. There might be an extra Customs Service charge but that will probably be $15-20.00 at the most. In about eight hours I will know if it has arrived today ... :-O Micke Östlund, Växjö, Sweden ------------------------------ My record collection: jazzmicke

....for that info, but I didnt even wanna look at your list. More fun when Im listening, and all of a sudden I hear a version of a song so familiar that I ve heard hundreds of times already, but I still appreciate your effort. Also, just got this in my email- Your order from Dead.net was shipped via UPS Standard Ground shipping on Aug 26, 2011. Please allow up to 12 days for delivery. To track your order, click here and view information for tracking number XXXXXXXXXX. So, a week after I receive the box, I get the email telling me it's coming. Obviously stuff is backed up at Rhino, but all that aside, assuming everyone gets theirs, these folks went out on a limb and came up with the goods. This is such an awesome product, one that I'll enjoy for years to come. Now for the next box set. How about that East Coast '87 tour after Garcia came back from the coma--that was some emotional stuff, and a lotta well played shows.

Okay, a few days ago, i checked my account and there was a pending charge for my box set....looking good methinks. I re-checked my account yesterday and the pending charge has disappeared and the funds made available once again ???. Not getting too carried away though...i have my order confirmations etc and am sure all will be well after noticing that the first person to receive one in Europe posted a message yesterday. Oh, and on the subject of future box sets...i'd have no problem with the 1972 (again ?!?!) November Southern Swing....some great performances there !. Later, Ian.

I am using the same credit card that I ordered the set with. But my address changed. I called up several times to change the address, and apparently it finally *stuck.* So they seem to have my correct address, but supposedly haven't shipped the box yet (I'm in the first 3,000). After hearing from "upper level support" it seems that they pre-printed mailing labels before sending out the email saying to make sure customer service has your current address/cc number. Brilliant move, no? Anyway, they haven't yet run the new address labels with updated info (as of last week when I was told this). So I'm wondering if anyone actually had the nerve to change their address and has since received their box. BTW, my CC was pre-approved weeks and weeks ago.

Just comparing the tunes on the Wembley Empire Pool 5/7/72 discs (discs 1,2, and 3 from the first concert of the tour) and notice that Casey Jones is missing. It is included on the list of tunes for this concert on this website. Is something missing? I thought the intent/promise was to include "every note" from the complete tour. Am I missing something?

As a hedge against the costs of the nearly two-month trip, the Dead’s label, Warner Bros., paid for the band to lug around a 16-track recorder to capture the entire tour… and we’re glad they did!

4/7's Big Boss Man cuts out 38 seconds early and Casey Jones wasn't recorded (for whatever reason). The key phrase is "includes all of the music recorded"... obviously, they can't include songs that weren't recorded.

Just received an email from dead.net as follows: "We hope you are enjoying the sights and sounds of your Europe ‘72: The Complete Recordings box set! The label containing your official box number is about to clear customs and will be shipped to you shortly. You’ll then be able to customize your box by affixing your official unique number anywhere you’d like." Either they chose not to delay shipping the "trunks" waiting for these labels to arrive or the outcry from the recipients of numbers 3,001-7,200 prompted this action. Either way this is good news and makes the trunks as special and unique as originally advertised. Thanks for this!

Ha! It's a good job I'm not one of these nervous types. Because I've got that message but no box to enjoy either the sight or sounds of. And the reservation on my card disappeared today! Although I still have the money. Ah well - hopefully I won't have to make do with a sticker. I'm in England, by the way, just in case anyone cares. Bye bye.

I also just received the email. It's a nice gesture. I was also under the impression that all boxes would be numbered, but I haven't been losing any sleep over it. But check out what happened to me... I was in on the initial 3000 copies but I didn't want it personalized. To be honest, I thought it to be a bit cheesy. I assumed the numbering and the personalization were two separate things. I never guessed the sticker with the personalization, and the number would be one and the same. Did anybody? We never knew exactly what we were getting. So even though I secured one of the first 3000 I requested no personalization. My box arrived on September 1st, with no personalization, and no number - They apparently sent me one of the 3001-7200 sticker-less boxes. Oh well, what can you do? Regardless, I am enjoying this set.

Yeah, baby! How sweet are GDP? Ask and ye shall receive....Was convinced that even THEY weren't sure anymore whose was whose from 3001-7200, but it's all chill and under control....=) Am fantasizing about how ridiculously awesome it must've been to see the GD in beautiful concert halls like the Amsterdam and Rotterdam shows...(Not to mention Lyceum..)

It seems that there is a popular misconception among many here about limited edition numbering. Whether it's a book or a box set like this, just because you got number "1" doesn't mean you have the first one produced, and so on. The numbers are most often issued arbitrarily. It really means nothing other than signifying you have one of a certain number that was produced. "They" don't know who has box #3001, "they" just know they have to send out 4200 stickers with a unique number on it.

Has anyone in Europe/the Netherlands received the box already? Just being curious you know...

Given that network TV has been dropping soap operas, it is a good thing that the two Europe 72 threads are taking on a life of their own. Yes, I stressed about my order getting "lost" in the confusion. Yes, things could have been handled better by Rhino, yes it was expensive, yes I should not have spent the money. But...I bought it, it was delivered (even BEFORE my card was charged!), and it was not numbered. Now I am waiting for the complaints about the font or color ink used on the numbered sticker that is now on the way. Kind of reminds me of why I quit going to shows...watching people fight over whose "space" was being stood on, while getting yelled at by wanna-be tapers for loud breathing. A whole lot of folks need to take a big breath and chill. Those who ordered will most likely get their box. Those who missed the cut will likely, over time, get the music. The greedheads on eBay will likely deal with bad karma. Those who worry over lost trinkets...well, no one bitched when the amount of CDs in the box increased to keep the sets proper. I think overall that this major undertaking has been amazing, the music proves why 1972 still is tops for me, and this band truly has the most passionate fans in music. All it took was Not Fade Away from the first show, and I'd do it all over again...nuff said.

Thanks fer info, FMR. I know what you mean; that's pretty much what I figured when this new info came to light and I got my email. Shouldn't have worded it the way I did...BUT all the same there are only 4200 UNIQUE numbers left, and now they'll send them out to customers. It's not so much that I was expecting them to "look mine up" so to speak, based on my order #, I just wanted A # as it would be unique to my box. I'm anal that way; can see how lots of people wouldn't give a crap.... I never believed there was any scam, or there were more than 7200... Think this idea was cool,-7200 boxes, unlimited music only-cause the BOX is still limited for people who care/were lucky/really wanted that, but folks can still get the music and not get locked out like some did on F. West '69.

Speakin' of getting locked out....does anyone know if they issue new runs of dicks picks/other cds after they sell them out? Cause there were a few dicks picks I never bought and now can't get them on this site, and they're real overpriced from some independent sellers on Amazon. (haven't checked ebay) Pure Jerry too. Specifically the penultimate dicks picks, the one from '71 that was found on the Godchaux boat, i think? and the four CD pure jerry from '89 Merriweather. Was all set to buy them and then saw I couldn't. Bummer! (Think the '91 JGB Pure Jerry with Hornsby was gone too, want that as well) Will they re-release these eventually?
