If I did not misunderstand the question.I missed the Hollywood Festival in England,Europe.Hereafter, though I was born in Madrid in 1950,and,was self-exiled in England from 1968.Wouldn't missed much of what was 'history in the making' from such countercultural scope as was felt being mind-altered and shared like.It was only three of us whom fully loaded with Bear's acid travelled to Wembley (April 7,72).Next day,did hitch-hike alone.Don't know anybody else that did from Bath that we knew that had.Already knew about Bickershaw Festival being mind-blowing getting together,if one Festival was getting weird enough to be regarded 'underground',that one seemed remote and strange as it could be,but, had to hitch-hike even more alone than ever to it,plus some severe rain falling weather, right from the start! Before that it was rumoured that the Dead had their instruments at the Glastonbury Fayre in 1971,though it didn't happen, but soon after the rendering of 'Dark Star' at Wembley was published on one side in the tripled L.P. album that would compensate losses from the free festival. Was at all the Lyceum gigs and shared some laughing gas with the road crew and sadly saw last Pig Pen R.I.P. Next was all at the huge Alexandra Palace, did some taping. There was no problem in smuggling a gigantic tape recorder under my poncho.Lesh played some amazing atmospheric soloing which needs some inspection...1974. Next was all of the Rainbow shows in March and October 1981,here the bass frequencies found no walls strong to concealed its expansion any longer.Bears "steal your face' banner was first flashed open... I am at the moment playing the full show from Rockpalace from 1981,which overall sound much better from my cassette in the car,as did record with a Bang Olffensen hi-fi from live Capital Radio at Notting Hill Gate than any other source .Few doors from where Hendrix was found unconscious.Pete from the Who raised blisters out from the Dead. Not Fade Away! Throughout the years it has been a lonesome quest looking for people that might had been, but there are fewer and fewer. The Dead once invited a friend that was reporting for the Guardian in London about that phenomenon so called deadheads that had sprung from the Dead Freaks Unite. Inch your way through another land,so to speak...

I too saw the band in Newcastle, Alexandra Palace, Rainbow and Wembley. All were wonderful shows (esp Newcastle -my home town) BUT what about next year's 50th celebrations? Now that Phil is coming surely he'll be able to persuade some/all of the surviving members to visit Europe next year. let's start a petition!

Sometimes it was so frustrating feeling hidden away in England and having to wait for a Euro Tour to get to see The Dead. So I only got to see them the grand total of 3 times. Bickershaw Festival in Manchester way, Alexander Palace and Wembley in London. Don't know just how much detail is wanted here but all I can say is that at each concert something very special or very odd kind of happened. Sure our states of mind had something to do with it but it was beyond that for sure. Wherever that band seemed to go a certain majik surrounded the area. Such cool memories of times never to be forgotten.

Hello everyone, There is not too much happening on the Dead Heads in Asia page so i will come to you for this question. I am going back to Brussels next week and as much as i love passing out at the little pub on the corner of the grand place every time i am in Brussels, i would love to find another spot. Maybe a pub or someplace where there is the type of scene we usually look for. In 97-98 phish played at a very cool place but about 2 or 3 years ago i went looking for it and it was gone. If anyone knows a good place to mingle and feel at home in Brussels please let me know. Trifecta

Tiger lily, I have been globe trotting so have not had so much time to actually enjoy myself when I am on line. Any information on where there is a good spot to chill at while I am here in Brussels. Don’t get me wrong I love this city as it is one of my favorite spots on the world. I actually stay in Brussels for about 2 or so days on purpose every time I am here in Europe. I just flew in from Zurich last night and last week I was in Milano, Rome, and 3 days is Positano. With this being said I am very happy to be in Brussels with my favorite Belgium ales and breathe taking beauty. There is only one place in the world where such a gloomy sky is actually brightened by the architecture. Does anyone know if they are actually using real gold on the buildings to brighten up the place? Anyway i look forward to the positive feedback. Cheers Trifecta

So we really are everywhere (still). I moved here from San Francisco 3 years ago, and like someoe said earlier on, it is really important to live outside the US for awhile (especially now). Anyway, I was lucky to see tons of Dead & Jerry shows, starting with the famous 8-27-72 (what an initiation), and then many many in the 80's and 90's (including Essen, Berlin (!!), Frankfourt & Hamburg...Berlin was a gas!). I have been royally spoiled!! The one thing I do miss about leaving SF is not getting to see the various spinoff bands. My question is: when are Phil and Friends coming to Europe??? Switzerland has a ton of summer festivals, and lots of graet halls to play in...and I am certain the neighboring countires do too. So we should start lobbying for a summer 2008 Phil & Friends summer tour!! Oh, and any other Swiss deadheads out there?? (I'm in St Gallen, just east of Zurich) Cheers & Peace all! 50% of Tanzania's population is under 18 - for Tanzania the future is now: http://www.mkombozi.org/50/

Boom, boom! ...but seriously, I have to check out Switzerland AND Brussels!!! Just finished a big tour around Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Belarus and Russia! Did gigs in Tallinn, Minsk and Brest and just roamed around the rest meeting far out folks! Crazy to play gigs in a dictatorship! I'll post some vids from that on youtube later this week. Highlights: Not getting arrested for playing freedom music in Belarus, even after doing a medley on the street in front of the Presidents Palace and having it videoed. Hitching a ride on a boat to cross a river I didn't see on the map in rural Estonia and not missing the bus I was trying to catch. Having a Belarus soldier help me out taking me around Brest even letting me wear his army hat for a photo op in front of T-34 tanks at a war memorial. Finding out there really are good folks out there, everywhere, who are "on to IT"! :) Are you kind?

Hi,I live in Holland and for many long years I have been a fan of the Grateful Dead. It started with Workingman’s Dead in 72. Slowly I collected more records and later CD's. I have never seen them live. Therefore I missed the whole scene with the crowd and the chance to meet other Dead Heads. About ten years ago I met another Dead Head in a music store and we started exchanging CD's. After I while we had the whole official collection complete. By that time I got fast Internet and I discovered the sites with the taped shows. I was really amazed that there were still so many people that are as much a Dead Head as I am. Many even more so. I thought for a long time that I was still stuck in my youth refusing to grow up. I realize now that this is more then a childish thing. The music is both sereous and joyful. Luckily my partner is as much into this as I am. We enjoy listening to the music with earphones on. If someone passes by there is deep silence with once in a while an exclamation of: “Great, huh?”. What we miss are other people to share what we enjoy. I have read in the Taper’s Compendium of sessions where the music is played to a group of people. Only once we went to a show in the Melkweg in Amsterdam where The Movie would be featured. But the tape was in such bad condition that the show was cancelled. I wonder if there are more Dead Heads in Holland I would like to get in contact. Maybe we can try to organise a session in or near Amsterdam. Please let me know if you are out there.

Just read the post from Cliffl. He mentioned Tinariwen. For those who don't know this group it is a group of Touareg playing traditional and self written songs on electric guitars and traditional instuments. Very traditinal music with hardly any Western influences. We saw a show in The Melkweg in Amsterdam and we enjoyed it very much. There was a lady singer. She wore no veil but a big scarf that sometimes covered her hair, but mostly it was draped around her shoulders. The men were completely veiled, even when they were singing. It was an exceptional impressive show. Their CD is certainly worth listening to if you like the music from Northern Africa.

Have seen a documentary once about the Touareg and their music-or I think were called that-some are from what is now Mali, right? Anyhow was really fascinating music and "exceptionally impressive" like you said. And talking about ancient folk music, have really been enjoying a c.d. I have of Mongolian folk music these days. The voice singing in two tones, and natural rhythms of the steppes are really great! Perhaps I should vine it, if anybody is interested?********************************** Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone, you will still exist, but you have ceased to live. Hello Old Hippie A vine is a chain of people copying and then passing on a master set of CDs/DVDs containing (in this case) good quality/rare shows. Go to the following place for more information on current Vines in Europe . . Home » Forums » Dead Heads » Tapers >Vines Across the Waters Detailed Explanations of how it works are on Page 3 of the forum There are two Eurovines going at the moment with a few more to start soon. You may have to search back through the forum for the start point of any vine to see full listings of what it contains. Make sure that when you add your name you do so to the last posting on any particular vine. Good luck!

Somewhat belated, but from me too. Is cool and more communal that our times online tend to cross over, despite being on different continents. Anybody seen or heard from Golden Road in a while? Hadn't seen him in ages, and sent him a PM, but have had no response. Bob-any recommendations for Spanish telephone/internet service? Which company might be good and affordable. Have been researching a couple of services (Orange, Spanish telecom) but am unsure which would be a better deal. ********************************* Don't part with your illusions. You double poster with e.s.p! :-) Am back in Spain again tomorrow morning, but just for a short while again. Will be leaving Thursday morning for the Spielemesse in Essen, Germany (a gigantic international game fair) until Sunday night. Then back to Spain again. Wshew am racking up some miles. Also will have to make a quick professional jaunt to Paris perhaps, the week after that. Am gonna end up speaking a horrible mish-mosh of languages by the end of these weeks. Is already quite complicated. Keep putting French words in when am trying to speak Spanish, Spanish words when speaking to my French customer, not to mention the German/English creole that I speak with my children. OY! "que cosa mas mona", Bob-had to learn that phrase for the trip to Ikea with one of my co-worker's wives. ********************************** Don't part with your illusions. Perhaps like me what brought them here first of all was the music and they are not getting what they need. Streaming does not work for many of us for technical or lifestyle reasons, Sirius not available so what is left? Happy to have fun around the forums and meet so many good people, but really fed up with waiting for new releases and the disrespectful lack of feedback to all our inputs. Vining has been great and is the main thing that keeps me here these days. All this is really undermining the community vibe you are trying to cultivate here, but I don't need to tell you this (again) do I? But you did ask! yes it is quiet here isn't it over the last few days i have listened to the last GOGd shows i saw in 1990 SEVENTEEN years ago, in that time Ratdog have been over here twice, and that doesn't look likely to happen again. There seems to be no sign of anybody else coming over. Approaching Christmas and no sign of any new product, but when it does come we get hammered with hefty postal charges, the streaming seems to be winding down and looks to follow the downloads, we are around a year now on that. The vine seems to be healthy your side of the pond but over here things seem to be coming to a halt and winter is coming :-( Bob - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Spanish Jam

well the road trips discs and the announcements of all sorts of other stuff have certainly brightened up my morning, but as I posted elsewhere they would have saved themselves, the mods and us a lot of grief by communicating this type of info a bit earlier Lets hope what is promised materialises, I certainly feel far more cheerful today Shipping for Roadtrip 1 is $15. The pack of 7 DVDs plus case recently shipped to me by Richard cost $8.50 to post. yes and I write long posts in word too for the same reason and spell check them.

They must have been working on this Road Trip thing for months now and no word to anyone. I assume the box set is going to the Winterland 73, which has/is been circulating around as vines it would be nice if they put out some sort of release programme so we know what is coming the shipping cost is ridiculous, i assume if you get it elsewhere you don't get the free disc I am still fed up with being treated like a second class citizen over here Bob - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Spanish Jam

..and he does not have the rep as a whiner. Caveat moderator As for the postage charge, well it is totally fucking ridiculous. What do they do, put it on the space shuttle. A triple CD with packaging weighs max 220g or 8 ozs According to USPS First Class International Mail the charge for this is $7.20 to France. So the mark up by Rhino is $7.80 To ship the same package within California costs $4.60 and Rhino charge $7.42 shipping, a mark up of less than $3.00 There is no justification for this, and as Bob has mentioned the high postage cost can increase the charge so much that it attracts import duties. If a lot of tasty new stuff does come out soon with bonus discs we can take turns ordering from Rhino while the rest order from Amazon (postage free at the moment in France).......and then : - o
