Those are all very kind words. I've spent the last week finishing a glass piece that I started over a year ago. It is extremely rewarding hanging infront of one of my windows. Life's a trip man, to say the least. I'm going to meet one of the other x-students tomorrow for a beer after work. She unfortunately spent everything she had and moved here from San Francisco. I'm getting her a job and will definately buy the drinks. Getting blind sided definately sucks but I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason. Life is full of obstacles and I, just like the rest of us, have come across my share. There is no point in sheltering yourself from reality and the world when unwillingly placed in the spotlight. With that in mind I will only perservere and continue to thrive in my own assbackwards fucked little mind that I for one consider creative. I made a beautiful pile of sticks the other day. It was shaped like a big egg and took me almost four hours. I'd love to share photos. I don't mind falling back on my trade. At least its not my degree! I'm more than likely going to get this job which will pay me about forty a year. Not too shabby. Mental clarity of course is more important, but I'll take it where I can get it these days. Thanks and love. Chris

The one called Tim speaks truth. You should make a movie about the whole deal, cinema verite like, call it "the Shit Creek Project" or something. Shoot it on the cheap and post it in episodes on YouTube. Stillshots get posted here at dead.net. Stay rooted in the facts, but feel free to insert copious amounts of weirdness (example: the director didn't die, he was kidnapped by Men in Black being mind controlled by aliens who don't want your awesome talent released. Its a conspiracy!). Gonzo moviemaking. And you've got a bunch of 'heads that will take care of the viral marketing. You've got a year, so it better be good. And don't forget my executive producer credit ;^D Hang in, bro', and cheers, MarkintheDark

hey chris, sometimes these things happenfor a reason we can't see until later. having done a lot of swimming in shit's creek myself, i can tell you... dig in man, don't get thrown by it, there is something greater going on that maybe none of us can see yet. keep your art going, find a way to do it without the benefit of the school for now, you will get stronger, your art will become unbreakable through this. these are all just creative obstacles that all the people we call artists have to get through, survive, and WHEN you do, you'll see its not a setback, but a test of whether you really WANT it. look around, see how much good you got in your life, cherish it, and let it out into your art. you gotta turn shit creek into sweetwater lake baby! Not sure if this qualifies as an "announcement", but I figured I'd throw in my post and, if it's not appropriate, Marye can take it down. Was on tour pretty steady from late 70's thru mid-80's, then spent the next 10 years or so seeing the boys as often as I could till Jerry passed. Now I see who I can when they swing through town. Still lovin' it. I'm also a filmmaker who recently had a film taken away from me by some rather nasty producers who re-cut it from scratch and turned it into the polar opposite of everything I spent 8 years trying to get made. They released it to dvd with my name still attached as writer and director. I'm now in the midst of a grassroots campaign to get my cut of the film released and I need all the support I can muster up. I've got a web site that includes a petition (really need those signatures), an interview documentary with cast and crew, journalists/writers all talking about the Writers & Director's Cut and why it should be out there, written interviews, articles, etc.. I won't go on as all the information you need is at the web site. All I'll say is I managed to finish the film AFTER it was taken away from me and the response has been beyond incredible. I'll tell you right now that it is a thought-provoking supernatural thriller dealing with some very relevant social issues that was turned into a 2-dimensional horror film once Screen Gems became attached as the film's distributor and Clive Barker's name thrown above the title. If you have ANY interest in artists' rights or even in just adding your name to support this film and myself, It would be greatly appreciated. Take a look at the site and decide for yourself. This is one of the things going on in my life at the moment and the journey I'm currently undertaking. Here's the link: http://www.spreadingtheplague.com Thanks for your time. The wheel keeps turnin'... Hal

I am going into 10th grade, and last year I noticed that no one was Really in to the Dead, THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE. If more people listened to the Grateful Dead, the world would be a happier place, for more reasons than just the music!!!

My sympathies to all who remain unfamiliar with the Dead and have not a clue what they're missing out on. I am talking about music appreciation on an unprecedented level and while I understand that it is an acquired taste (I didn't exactly immediately "get" it at first either but "Without a Net" sucked me in). I sneak the Dead into the background when I have friends over or when driving here or there with the hope that I might turn them on to it... not the easiest of challenges but it is a must! When was the last time another band or performer (Jerry) sent such shivers down the spine at that peak moment in a song? So do those near and dear to you a favor and help them wake up to find out that they are the eyes of the world. One way or another this darkness got to give.

Okay, I have an announcement, along with a shameless solicitation for volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help out at next week's Project Homeless Connect in Oakland. It's at the North Oakland Senior Center from 9:30 to 3:30. Project Homeless Connect, which I think was one of Gavin's brainchildren in SF, is sort of an intensive one-day workshop for homeless folks with everything from food and medical treatment to job training referrals, housing assistance, etc. They had the first one in Oakland last year and I said, but what about the DOGS? The city of Oakland folks immediately agreed that it would be swell to have a veterinary component to this, as a number of homeless folks showed up for the first one and then couldn't get services because there wasn't a safe place to leave their critters. One of the city folks happened to be on the board of the East Bay SPCA, which does free shot fairs in poor neighborhoods, and they agreed to come and do a free shot fair there, and a vet's going to be there too. My designated gig is being one of the animal sitters who hangs with the dogs (which is what I expect most of the animals to be) while their owners are inside getting what they need. So I'm here to bang the drum for anyone who's in the Oakland area that day to come on down and help out. Send me a PM if you're interested and I'll send you the details. But Mare, you're asking. What does this have to do with the Grateful Dead? I'm so glad you asked. The North Oakland Senior Center is in the now much restored building once known as Grove Street College (among many incarnations), probably best known to us Deadheads as the locale for the video of "Throwin' Stones." So you can do good and visit the site at the same time!

...sounds good (re the post above)...of course personally I'm up North snowed in so I won't be making an appearance.... ....but, i have a few new tunes and remixes of the older ones on my page now. The tunes are all tributes to the Dead except for On the Road which is more of a breeze through the beat scene etc (brief and not in depth but I think catchy) and Memphis Hideaway is more inspired by the Dead scene that a tribute to the band. I hope you enjoy them. http://www.myspace.com/dcmuir Merry Christmas all!

Me And Tiger Lilly Busted out of Barcelona riding on a train Feeling nearly faded as her dress Tiger Lilly ate some paella just before the rain Farted all the way to Fi-guer-es Well I took my old cassette from my dirty sack Playin' slow while Lilly sang the blues Stinky farts keeping time Holding Lilly's spirit in mine We finallly sang near every song that we knew The Board's just another place to think about The Scene The Board can cheer you up -- if you know what I mean The internet is easy Lord, when there ain't no tour The Board is good enough for me Good enough for me and Tiger Lilly With the kind, grateful folks; rapin' here is fun Lilly shared the secrets of my soul Standing right beside me Lord in everything I done Lilly's spirit kept me from the cold Nowhere never on this Board, I'll let her slip her away Looking for memories I hope we'll find And I'll trade all my straight friends for a single head To be sharing Lilly's spirit, oh so KIND The Board's just another place to think about The Scene The Board can cheer you up -- if you know what I mean The Internet is easy Lord, when there ain't no tour The Board is good enough for me Good enough for me and Tiger Lilly yeah, I'm a re-gifter! Copy And Pass Along...Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to 30 people. If each of us s end it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) .. and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000)...and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth group of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers. If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all! (If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you have to do is send this to 10 people.... Well, let's face it, you just aren't a mathematician. But I am . so trust me on this one. How long would all that take? If each of us sends this e-mail out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. I suggest that we not buy from EXXON/MOBIL UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $2.00 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK. Keep it going

Yamadaog, We live in a capitalist country and these companies are service/product and ultimately profit driven like most public and private companies. Gas prices are going up for a host of reasons, most of which most people do not understand. Growing demand, limited supply, limited refining capacity, and fast growing middle class in Asia are all contributing to the higher gas prices. $2 gas is history and we better get used to it. Go ask a big oil company that earned $1bn last year to only earn $500mm this year. It isn't going to happen. Alternative energy sources are not the answer either because all that does is reduce the supply of gasoline and cause further inflation. Just like ethanol is doing right now to food prices. I don't know what the answer is, but boycotting isn't going to get it done.

Southeast Kansas and Northeast East Oklahoma Deadheads Unite. 98.9 KKRK out of Coffeyville Kansas has started a new forum on their website radioresultsgroup.com specifically for the Dead. Not much action going on but due to an increasingly large amount of requests for the Grateful Dead during their Live at Lunch show they created a Dead thread in their forums. Last week two tickets were given away to the Chautaqua Hills Blues Festival if you answered the trivia question correctly. Only one person replied and won the tickets. Also we are getting kind of bored with only two or three people being active in there. So if you are in the area tune in or log in because there will be more prizes given away. Oh yeah it's kind of weird hearing Sugar Mag or Box of Rain on the radio in this part of the country. Peace, Zac
