    Calling Scottish Deadheads?
Hello Friends, At the end of April 2011 I am going with my girlfriend to Annan in Dumfries to visit her family. I have never been to Scotland and I thought it was be really fun to meet you Scottish Deadheads. My name is Larry and I live in Manhattan. I have been into the GD since '69. My girlfriend, although very open minded, is not into the GD - so any help with info or anything for the trip would be much appreciated. Thanks...Peace....

Friends - I am writing the liner notes for three of the shows in the Europe 72 box: Jahrhunderthalle 26 April, Radio Luxembourg 16 May, and Lyceum 26 May. Is there anyone among us here who attended any of these shows, or heard the Radio Luxembourg show over the air? I'd be interested in a brief email conversation with an earwitness or two. For that matter, I suppose it would be good to talk with someone who hit one of the other shows, for a sense of how the Grateful Dead were presented to the European market. What had you heard of them before they arrived? How were they received? And of course, as these things go, I need it yesterday. I will check back here later, but it would expedite matters if you sent your stories to me at david@gdhour.com or david@trufun.com Thank you! Gans/GD Hour blog

jas obrecht Jamasutra "revolution down the road" cd reviewFirst, a quick background check: Barry “The Fish” Melton played lead guitar on the San Francisco scene’s first psychedelic record, and went on to play the Monterey and Woodstock festivals. His new “neo-psychedelic” release with Parisian guitarist/vocalist Stephan Missri and band is, in a word, extraordinary. It’s trippy, politically and socially conscious, and brilliantly played. Deadheads – Garcia freaks in particular – will love Melton and Missri’s flowing solos, epitomized by the Jerry-esque joyride of “Jamasutra Mantra.” Like the early Allman Brothers Band and Steve Hunter-Dick Wagner with Lou Reed, Melton and Missri create intriguing two-guitar interplay without venturing into overkill. They freak-out Hendrix-style on “Vert,” and Barry resurrects his wicked vibrato of yore for “Le Dernier Homme en Ville.” His sea shanty-cum-ecological call to arms “Shady Grove” recalls his Country Joe & The Fish era and then segues into one of the album’s best jams. International feels abound. Algerian-born Missri sings mostly in French, with a smooth, smoky voice. Rhythms and melodies seamlessly embrace rock, blues, psychedelic, Middle Eastern, and African influences. “This was truly a trans-Atlantic effort for me,” says Melton, who’s worked as a public defender in northern California. “Much of my early music was influenced by Middle Eastern music, which becomes immediately apparent were you to see me with Country Joe in the 1967 movie Monterey Pop.” Danish bassist Charles Jannic and French drummer Christophe Rossi excel at everything – hats off to these guys, as well as to Melton and Missri for their fine, fine playing and producing. Order this Seafood Records release at www.barrymelton.com and www.jamasutra.com.

The British paper Independent has today outed the new head of the Joint Intelligence Committee which runs MI5 and MI6 (equivalents of the CIA and NSC). His name is Alex Allen and he is a great Grateful Dead fan, collecting 100s of the band's bootlegs, all of Dick's Picks and dates his love for the band to his time in the mud at Bickersham music festival in 1972 ( a show srecently exerpted on dvd). His love for the Jefferson Airplane is a distant second. He seems to have no interest in Brit bands, which may be reason for criticism from his fellow citizens. He has never admitted to taking acid or smoking pot. He is said to be silicon valley intelligent.

Hello to anyone who reads this and also anyone who doesn't. Any deadheads in Vienna (that's Austria, and not in the U.S. as there is apparently a place of the same name there as well, somewhere)? After reading through what people said, it seems this part of the continent is quite poor on deadheads. I hope I'm wrong. By the bye, have a great day (or night)! -M.

Lily is the daughter of one Keith Allen, famous here in the uk for his work in alternative comedy in the 80s. TV shows The Young Ones and Comic Strip perhaps the most famous. I saw him at Glastonbury giving hippies a hard time for making such a mess. He challenged conceptions. He is one of the good guys.I'm here in Kidderminster, rural worcestershire. recent visit to NY to see Phil and Friends was memorable. we saw the last night. so awesome. listen to the soundboard available from philzone. 11/11/07. third set was the best i ever did see. I meet every month with a bunch of guys locally to listen to the dead and chat. we all did a summer of love party last july in kent. 200+ like minded people for a wonderful, music filled, day.

I've seen the post of someone from St. Gallen (from the guy from SF). I am living in Switzerland, too. In Alpthal, actually, which - needless to say - even noone in CH has ever heard of :-). But it's in the Area of Einsiedeln, about 45' away from Zürich... Hey you guy from St. Gallen. In Einsiedeln is this little (loose) dead community and I think there are more then 20 persons around... It all started because of this cover Band from Einsiedeln, the Dead End. But unfortunately, they don't play anymore. Therefore the community broke some sort of apart... Apparently being the only one chasing the net, I share a lot of concerts with my friends and needless to say, they are happy about that. A problem in CH is: you hardly find any good releases. There's obviously a small stock of available copies (e.g. Dick's Picks) and they're sold out very soon. Well, this shows me there are more deadheads around but where to find?

I became a member of the Dead net today. Could have done so way earlier. Not the day, I first heard about the Grateful Dead in the late 70s, because I got comuterised as late as 94, but well ... I am a native of the city, where the Dead once rocked the Rhine and have been living here for quite a number of my first, almost 52 years on this planet. I have read through lots of posts in this forum and although I have never been to a Dead show, I know what some people in here wrote about German audiences, not only at Dead concerts. I am aware that it is not usual for newbies to introduce themselves, the way, I might do. So I will leave it with a short story what made me join in here. And asking for a little help. Early last week I went searching the www for the lyrics of Ripple, which lead to surfing and reading for days (not that lyric only). Until I got news about the free stash at nugs.net. I made my mac download everything Deadish available there. Took me three days with double shifts. In between I also ran into other spots, whith free downloads in formats, I have no experience with. Downloaded one of them, but did not know which program to choose to open them. I am neither real professional in computer handling nor in understanding techncal terms in English. But as I have become a bit tired of listening to my few/50 something LPs and CDs with Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart music, I would like to download my ass of, before I will move to a part of Germany, where internet access happens with the smallest possible bandwidth. So I am asking for help. Is there anybody, who can explain to me what this shn flac stuff is all about. And how to handle dem files ? Does not have to be, but preferably in German. If not, please try to make it easy. Be Well & Thanks a lot, andré

I am the new kid :+? (almost 52) on the block, joined dead.net about a week ago and after I have signed into the Acid Tests vine, I found out that there are vines spreading the music, right here, over Snakes Place, too. I have read (okay sometimes I also scrolled through) all the pages of this Euro Vine and kinda lost it. But as I am interested in the Acid Tests recordings, please let me know by PM, if these are somewhere around, because then two people could save some money. Thanks ! Let there be music ... andré

Hi everybody!i am living in the czech republic and i want to say that even if there never was an opportunity to see the Boys playing live over here there are amazingly many deadheads over here.and the more we missed the concerts the more we cherished tapes, vynils etc. With the uprising of the cd we could start to listen to high quality live recordings that, beside the regular albums, were never or very rarely available.but i want to tell you about a very sad day in 95 we all remember.sitting in a bar in the center of prague thunder and lightning hit me as i opened the paper and read the news..but to my surprise many people who knew about my interest into the DEAD came up to me to show their support and understanding over that trgic loss!Even more,as the evening went by,a taxi-driver(which are the greediest human beings in town)offered to play a tape ihad with me on his giant car-stereo in front of the bar!!!the tape i had was the Boys at red rocks and it was played again and again until 3 o clock in the morning with dozens of people hanging out, dancing and having a great time.It was pure magic in the center of town...even a russian mafioso, who has been to the states for a while hugged me with tear in his eyes and we had a J together looking at the moon and listening to Jerry playing FRANKLINS TOWER!!Yeah even prague said good bye to Jerry in a way that suited this man.P.S.As this was happening in the center of town, neighbors must have called the cops more than once(the stereo in the car was just BIG)but the guy had a remote control and everytime the cops drove by,he simply paused the music just to start it again when they were gone...and the name of the bar was The Singers Place!!!

After I found out about those amazing download possibilities and had started to be able to handle dem files and stuff, I called a musician friend of mine, to tell him about it. After I mentioned that I have started downloading GD music, he told me that, while on vacation with his wife in SF and walking through town one day, the streets started to fill with people people people, all walking the same direction. The two walked with them, ending up at the concert the GD and other folks played, because Jerry had passed .... phew andré

after having read this it came to my mind that maybe somebody drugged your friends and after they woke up and stumbled out on the street, they found themself in a bunch of zombies(also known as the living dead and recognisable by their habit of walking in big numbers into one direction).but because they where lucky as hell and staying in sf,your friends were not eaten alive but lead to a GD concert.........! aufwiederlesen yours Frankly

While I may not live in SF, I would hardly characterize them as "zombies, living dead"...They are people too. They may walk in one direction, but that is often downhill... or across the bridge. "deadheads" may in-fact resemble the modern day " Resident Evil Zombie", to all media purposes. But we are alive, and kicking. Haight-Ashbury has changed. Let us put ourselves behind the brilliant music, and use it to fund-raise for a social cause. its up to us. Paul, Lost Finger project

after having recieved several serious death threats ,insults etc...i feel the need to explain that we tcheque people have a long tradition of cynikal jokes.this starts with the jews(prague was one of the centers of the medieavel jewish community),continus with the brave soldier shvejk and goes on with egon erwin kisch,up to the hidden mokery over the communist system.may i recall that on the day jerry left us Howard stern played the dead alllday mixed with pretty weird jokes.SO WHAT?As Jerry said"Fuck em if they cant take a joke"! seriously yours Frankly

(if not, just tell me, I am new here), but Frankly, I want to share my thoughts about your last two posts to this forum. To me it is no wonder that you have received some frankly PMs, regarding your reaction to the story, I shared above (and decided to send, after reading yours about something that happened the day Jerry passed). I guess none of the people, who sent you a PM, was able to understand what made you react like that. Now you justify your reaction by mentioning the tcheque long tradition of cynical jokes. But as there is nothing at all in my liitle story, that could make somebody become cynical, not even just a little bit, your explanation is of no value to me. If you don't know how to behave yourself in an online forum and probably don't care about respect, you better might stay inside the Tzech boundaries. Otherwise you might run into members of some society on this planet, where they have a long tradition in (worst case scenario for you, frankly) simply killing adults, who get cynical in public for no reason at all. So it might be healthy to consider breaking up with that Tcheque tradition. Another suggestion, I want to make, is that you keep Jerry or whomevers quotes for yourself, instead of using them to justify your misbehaviour. And yes, I expect that you probably have the opinion to know better. But see, I know good. And I have no problem not to get cynical, although you gave me more than one reason, to do so frankly. andré p.s. : PMs from your account will be blocked from now on.
