We've probably all had them - those dreams where you're having a lovely conversation with Jerry while driving down the road past a forest of purple trees, say. Or you're in this oddly familiar yet not familiar landscape, with the show for the ages going on in the background. If you dream of the Dead, when you're asleep that is, post here! And thanks to cosmicbadger for the suggestion!

I have had a few dreams.....My favorite is that I am sitting on a couch with Jerry in is his house, and it seemed to be surrounded by low rolling hills. Jerry is older he has very gray hair and is wearing a dark T Shirt and blue cut off pants . He does not have carpet in the house but a very rich green lawn. He is asking me if I would cut the grass and take care of the yard in his house ( I like to garden). This seems perfectly normal to me and I ask him why he has a yard in his house.and he says something like....." being on the road... hotels,,,blah blah...wanted to be surrounded by nature.when I can, blah blah (it was Jerry's voice).., I take out a pair of hand sheers and kind of spruce up the floor (lawn). I am totally at peace with this, where as many of my other dreams are manifestation's of stress and work. That morning I told my wife ( who is a forensic psychologist) about it and remarked what a nice calming effect it had on me. She of course is laughing about how "I have become consumed by the GD" but was struck by how happy I was. I have a theory about this dream. I have read every book I could on Jerry and the band. I have watched many Shows and interviews. I have been to California once and was in Reno, Sonoma Valley, Yosemite and San Fran and I can picture the area he lived in (at least in my dream). Jerry does not come across as a superstar but clearly as a content person who seems to want to remain as close to real things (such as nature) as possible. He acts friendly but also somewhat detached. My feeling was one of him feeling tired not so much physically but having to be "Jerry Garcia". I have had it twice. I have had several dreams of playing guitar with the band. I have also had a great dream of being in the Beatles and watching my self on a Black and white TV. I love these dreams to. I thought I was the only one who had these type of dreams. Everytime I "relax" with a few of my Dead head friends they always ask me to tell the Jerry dream And the road goes on forever.... BobbaLee

Wow! Shivers up my spine too. Especially Shadow with the time frame. I also had a dream in late 95. Jerry and I were walking in SF and he was pointing out some of the local landmarks. I kept asking him over and over "why Jerry, why did you have to leave us?". He didn't answer but continued to take me on a tour of the city. I woke up sobbing wishing the dream lasted longer. What made it so different was the clarity. I was totally concious and in total contol of what I was saying and doing. I remembered every second of it for years, but time has since faded it some. I never told anyone except my wife, thinking who was I thinking I was special enough to be visited by him. Seeing some of these posts, I now know I'm not the only one. I can only hope everyone who admired and loved Jerry so much can or already has experienced something similiar. Thank you all for sharing.

great stories Marshun and Shadow, send a shiver up the spine. Seems that the Grateful Dead experience continues to blur the boundaries between dreams and realities, and like the story teller in Terrapin, Jerry is shedding light all around, even in the strangest of places. But what DID he want with the eggnog?

...well, I might as well write about a dream that I've never told anybody about 'cuz nobody would understand in the "straight" world. My communication skills suck so I apologize that this is probably gonna be too long and somewhat unintelligible. Hopefully somebody will still find some value.....or something better from this dream from late 1995: I find myself sitting in a dark, empty auditorium with a very dim light emanating from somewhere near my seat. I couldn't see the stage but somehow I could sense I was about 20 rows back from the stage in a old-time, movie-theatre-style auditorium with plush leather seats. There is music playin' from a lone acoustic guitar ---- the music can only be described as "orgasmic" multiplied by a thousand. The beauty of the music was literally overwhelming my entire being --- I could feel it in my body --- total "bliss" I guess is another way to describe it along with "orgasmic." As I am sitting there experiencing that bliss on every single level of my being I realize there is actually one other person in the building: a woman sitting two seats away from me. She just gives me a smile of "recognition" --- nothin' sexual between our "connection," but she definitely was some sort of archetype from the core of my being. The best description of the woman's role in the dream will possibly make sense for anybody familiar with Dante's "Divine Comedy." The woman in the dream was to me what Beatrice was to Dante (see note below for further description.) So this acoustic guitar music is still playin', the place is still dark except for a dim light around my seat, the place is still empty except for The Woman beside me, and I am experiencing a state of Bliss that was beyond the greatest moment of my life (a 'shroom trip of Divine dimensions). For an unknown reason I turn around in my seat and there is Jerry sitting behind me strumming his acoustic guitar and flashes me that big, beautiful grin as if he's sayin', "Hey, Buddie, how ya' doin'(?)" The penultimate moment of perfection in a perfect dream. Now some background: 1.) A day or two later the lyrics to "Like A Road Leading Home" hit me out of nowhere: "When the road gets too long And you run all out of song And your pain gets too much For you to bear Turn around, turn around Turn around, and I'll be there Like a road, like a road Leading home" 2.) As for the setting: I realized it was "West High Auditorium" from the "1980 Solstice Shows" that I was fortunate enough to be able to attend. Exact same location where my seat was located at the shows. Thank You for reading this stuff if you read it this far. I'll put some stuff about Dante's "Divine Comedy" below for anybody who may be interested. --- ThePilgrimShadow "In The Divine Comedy it is Beatrice who, out of love for the poet, initiates Dante's journey because she believes that he has strayed from a righteous path and she thinks that this divine journey will save him from himself. Thus, she leaves her seat in Heaven to descend to Hell where she asks Virgil to serve as Dante's guide. Beatrice meets Dante in Earthly Paradise (Purgatorio) and acts as his guide through Heaven. On many occasions during his travels through Hell and Purgatory, Dante believes that he can go no further but the promise of meeting Beatrice motivates him to continue. Beatrice amply rewards Dante for his travails when she leads him into Heaven and grows in radiance and beauty as they ascend toward God." (from the "Novel Analysis" site: http://www.novelguide.com/divinecomedy/characterprofiles.html) Thanks again if you read this thing.

LOL yeah! --although it was ages ago, and I didn't jot down any notes afterwards. The scene was a smallish party...more a social obligation, really, like somebody's wedding reception. In the dream, I'd fallen asleep on a lawn, and when I woke up, the guys were playing. Totally mellow, first-set vibe, with the band in the sun and me in the shade --think Alpine, only on a much smaller scale and with no seats or cement floor under the pavilion. Can't remember what they were playing, or if I recognized it in the first place, and the crowd --such as it was-- measured only in the dozens. Could've walked right up to the edge of the stage and started making faces at 'em if I'd been so inclined. And then I woke up.

Two dreams... Recently I dreamt that I was in a near deserted supermarket and as I wheeled my cart to the only open checkout I saw that Jerry was sitting behind the till with an acoustic guitar singing Brokedown Palace!..then I woke up. On reflection I think this may have been to do with my frustration over the (temporary) disappearance of the online downloads! I have another recurrent dream of seeing a fantastic GD show at an outdoor festival in a natural amphitheatre with a rainbow stage. I wake up convinced that I was really there, but as far as I know I never was!!

I frequently have dreams in which I am in some club or bar, usually for some bizarre reason, and discover that the Dead is like the house band, or the visiting band. You know, the kind of place where there are maybe a dozen tables with a 12-inch high platform/stage stuck in the corner.I'm always terribly dissapointed when I wake up to find "it was only a dream."

I have had several Dead dreams during my 30+ years as a deadhead. I will briefly describe two for now. 1) In the late 1970s, I dreamed Jerry Garcia was teaching my high school psychology class, and the song playing was The Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion. I couldn't understnd the words. 2) The night before or after Jerry died (can't find my notes right now), I dreamt he was sitting on the edge of my bed and I was sitting cross-legged in the middle. We were just talking. He was very animated and excited. He eagerly urged me to 'go ahead and try it' and to 'come on over'. I was not sure if I should go there, although I did believe him that it was safe - wherever it was. I replied, 'Uh, I'm not sure - maybe not right now...I think I should stay here for now.' Weather Report Suite was the song in that dream -Lisa

I used to have dreams all the time involving the Dead and they almost always involved them playing at some venue I had never been to and it was really difficult to get inside to the show proper. I could always hear the tunes faintly in the background and I'd be inside the building but like underneath the venue or back stage or somewhere and it was always like a maze and really difficult to get to the main room where they were playing. I always make it into the room eventually but the frustration of having to get there always sticks out. Then again, the elation of finally reaching the main room where they're playing- the music is loud, the fans are happy, the light show is in full and bright force, etc.- is always a great feeling in the dream, too.

I had a dream that I was in a motel room with some friends and Warren Haynes and the other members of Gov't Mule. I asked Warren if there was a possibility that the Dead of 2004 with him and Jimmy Herring could ever reunite. He told me you can't go back and recreate that time and that Phil, Bob, Mickey, Jimmy Herring and he were all so busy with their own projects at this time that it would probably never happen. I also asked him about the Phil and Friends band that he and Jimmy were a part of and he said the same thing about that. Nice down to earth guys in the dream. I think they probably are in real life. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. Wiliam Blake

Many strange dreams with the Dead involved. They would play endless sets, and I still couldn't get close enough to meet any of them. Like when you're running in a dream but aren't getting anywhere.

just the other night I had a dream with Brent and Bobby in it, I do not remember too much, but we were looking at some song lyrics. in paranthesis under one of the lines were the words: (sing in a raspy voice) I turned to Brent, and said something like 'I guess that means you' peace.

Had a Dead Dream last night. I was with an old girlfriend and going to a GD show in a big complex on a hill (looked from the outside like Alexandra Palace in London). We queued up to exchange vouchers for tickets Next to the ticket desk was a DJ console; the person spinning the discs before the show was Linda Ronstadt!!! Inside the theatre it looked like a Victorian courthouse with wood panelling and balconies. We were very early and so wandered around the tented city outside looking for some food. Girlfriend got bored and wandered off (no loss there I can assure you!) and I ended up sitting around a campfire talking with a bunch of crusty old deadheads wondering what the show would be like. As we wandered up the hill towards the show I was woken at 6am by the dog scratching on the bedroom door wanting to go outside to water the garden! Never got to see the show or to find out if Brent was there and sang in a raspy voice. Note 1: I went on a train journey past Alexandra Palace a few weeks ago and thought about the ’74 shows there. Note 2: I saw Linda Ronstadt on an Emmylou Harris documentary last weekend: she was almost unrecognisably..eeerm…plump. Question 1. Did any crusty old deadheads meet me in a dream last night? Question 2: should I seek professional help?

In the dream, my wife (now ex) asks me to make up a joke about dead heads. And i tell her this: How many dead heads does it take to screw in a light bulb? Three: One to actually screw it in One to sell commemorative t-shirts And one to say he saw it done better on the East coast. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OK...this one blew my mind when I first read it way back when it was written. I have also had spacey dreams about being at strange shows. Seems as if the stage was really high and I was kind of close but people were sort of milling around more like in the parking lot or the arena decks. I can't recall the music but can still see the lights. The other side of the second part freaked me out for weeks. Now, I can finally write about it. I had been wanting to get around to posting about a surprise meeting with Mr. Garcia but thought it was sort of mundane. It was not at the show or the casino or the club...it was in a grocery store. A deserted one at that! Well, maybe a few last minute customers and a couple of other closers. I was just a workingman night guy doing my closing round laps killing time. As I came to the end of the isle I glanced over at the freezer and saw a man peering down at the frozen holiday turkeys. When he stood up I thought he kind of looked like Jerry from the back with the silver hair falling over a nice jacket. I doubtingly said "Mr. Garcia?" Then Jerry turned around and and said "Hello." He came walking over to me smiling and we shook hands as I turned into Garth from Waynes World...I think I kind of went into shock. Suddenly there he was. This amazing artist and person I had seen perform and listen to play for so many years. It was almost like meeting this legendary cartoon character that was really a real person just stopping in to the market on the way home. The Garth shock almost paralyzed me and then Jerry woke me up and asked me where the egg nog was. I picked my mind back up off the floor and put it back on my head and said "second shelf over in the dairy case next to the milk" He thanked me and then went about his shopping. The word on the street was just leave those guys alone when they are in town. Let them live some sot of a private life so I resisted the temptations to get an autograph or start talking to him about that certain show or song. Besides, my mind was to blown to speak. You've heard that high pitched Hiiiiii from Garth and that spacey stare. Then, my pulse ran off to the hills. Jerry was loose in the store...vanishing off to get his egg nog. Now what do I do? I know...I'll go up to the cash register where I can help him checkout. I was still in shock but I just wanted to help him get out of there. I quickly got over to the cash register and told the guy bagging he could take a break. Then there he was again...waiting patiently in the short line next to the magazines. It was surreal. Jerry, just a regular guy getting his egg nog. Thats all he got. I took my time making sure I placed the carton in the bag perfectly for him. We exchanged "Happy Holiday" good-byes and off he went on his way. Again I resisted the urge to chase him into the parking lot. Just as he was heading out the door a group of younger guys were coming around the corner. They started yelling Jerry!Jerry! Hey Jerry!!...that's when I felt a little sad sbout the cost of celebrity for Mr. Garcia and others but he handled it well with a quick wave and made it out the door. This was winter of '89. The meeting was certainly mindblowing and reading cosmicbadgers dream was stunning 'cuz that was very close to what really happened long ago or maybe it was just a dream!*! For you my friend... from the other world... Grateful Dead Recordings Date Album studio 1970 American Beauty Attics Of My Life Lyrics: Robert Hunter Music: Jerry Garcia In the attics of my life Full of cloudy dreams unreal Full of tastes no tongue can know And lights no eye can see When there was no ear to hear You sang to me I have spent my life Seeking all that's still unsung Bent my ear to hear the tune And closed my eyes to see When there were no strings to play You played to me In the book of love's own dreams Where all the print is blood Where all the pages are my days And all my lights grow old When I had no wings to fly You flew to me You flew to me In the secret space of dreams Where I dreaming lay amazed When the secrets all are told And the petals all unfold When there was no dream of mine You dreamed of me Kindest Regrads, ~Marshun~

I was "backstage" recently in a dream, when Jerry experienced a problem onstage and in what seemed to be unusual for him, he hurried straight for me. I was immediately terrified as I saw him coming at me! What had I done... kicked out a power cord or something? What the hell was I doing backstage, for that matter? When Jerry got to me, I could see I was not his target specifically. He was looking past me, unconcerned about me yet quite comfortable to enlist my help, in fact. "I need to find my guitar! Can you help me?" Without hesitation and relieved I wasn't in trouble... I began to look around the area for his guitar among the various equipment, crates and stage sundries, without asking about the guitar hanging from his shoulder. After digging through what was in plain sight, I opened a door to a shallow closet that contained several music stands... the old black metal ones I was familiar with as a kid playing sax in the school band. Behind the music stands were a STACK of beat up guitars laying horizontal on top one another. I promptly and excitedly presented Jer with two from the top of the stack. "Nope... nope, not those.", he stated without so much of a hesitation or inspection. Several more trips produced the same results, with the exception of Jerry's demeanor, which grew more and more distracted and detached. After a handful of more axes and denials, I was getting the impression that Jerry was messing with me and I gathered my nerve to ask finally, "Well what does it look like? What color is it? What make and model is it?", to which Jerry replied, "Oh it wouldn't be IN THERE!" His tone was almost mocking but there seemed, the entire time, to be an intent that was directed FOR ME, not to me or at me. I could write a book about what has happened since then, in regards to "links" to a possible meaning of this dream but recently I stumbled upon this quote that called for a post here (see below). Thanks Jerry... I miss you. “You have to get past the idea that music has to be one thing. To be alive in America is to hear all kinds of music constantly — radio, records, churches, cats on the street, everywhere music, man. And with records, the whole history of music is open to everyone who wants to hear it. ... Nobody has to fool around with musty old scores, weird notation, and scholarship bullshit... you can just go into a record store and pick a century, pick a country, pick anything, and dig it, make it a part of you, add it to the stuff you carry around, and see that it's all music.” ~ Jerry Garcia

Last night I had a real nightmare involving my cat Pumpkin (he's orange and white and we got him on Halloween) and Jerry in some woods being chased by a pack of wild dogs. It was dusk and I was on the back porch of a very large estate with acres and acres of grass and trees. There was a pack of wild dogs all different sizes running around and barking. and my cat was trying to cross the yard to get inside. Suddenly I saw an older Jerry looking quite worried hiding from the dogs. Once again he was dressed in dark shorts and a black t-shirt. I was yelling and waving to him to come inside. I was worried about my cat because he really seemed to hesitate every time I would I yell and wave at Jerry. Finally the dogs went under a fence into another yard and Jerry picked up Pumpkin and walked towards the house. I woke up before I was able to talk with him. You know sometimes i wonder if I listen to too much Jerry...... And the road goes on forever.... BobbaLee

I'll dream about the GD 2-3 times a year. Usually I'll dream that they're playing somewhere nearby, but I can't get to the show. When I was 22, I was fresh out of college and not real sure what I was going to do next. One night, I dreamed I was a movie star. I was lolling poolside with Lucas and Spielberg, discussing my next starring role, when someone suggests I play Peter Pan. Seemed silly to me, so I dove into the water. Swimming the length of the pool, the idea started to grow on me. I pop out at the other end, and hey, there's Jerry Garcia. "Jerry," I tell him. "I'm going to play Peter Pan!" He gives me that knowing, compassionate smile and says, "You're demented". Next morning, I took the hint from my subconscious. Started figuring out what I wanted to do, seeing how I was a boy who had already grown up.

This dream happened last night.I was at a country fair with rides etc and the Dead were playing under a small tent. The equipment was on the ground and there was no stage in fact there was only a short picket fence separating the small crowd and the band. It was a Brent era band and the music being played was "Without A Net". I have been listening to that CD every day for the past week. It went from Victim or Crime to China Cat what was strange was even though I could not see the band super clear they played the full version of the song. It was very sunny and bright a color dream and everyone in the band had on shades. 3 dreams in 6 months oh my! And the road goes on forever.... BobbaLee

I was at a show with my ex. The Dead were playing outside on a very small stage. There were only about 200 Dead Heads there. I remember they played " Scarlet Begonias", and everyone was jumping up and down. Bobby called everyone by name up to the stage and was handing out slices of psychedilic cucumber. Then I woke up....."Without love in the dream, it'll never come true."

i had never had a GD dream until 3 weeks ago. My son (14) was trying out for the Governor's School of Music as a guitar and bass player. He worked hard for months to prepair himself only to not due well at his audition. I told him things always work out for the best, but i could see he was heart broken even though they only chose 24 out of 175 applicants and did not add any guitar or bass players. That night i had a hard time falling asleep, not knowing if i had said enough to console him or wondering what else i could have done to help him prepaire for the failed audition. When i finally drifted off to sleep Jerry came to visit me, sitting next to me on the bed he told me that i had done all a dad could do, and to trust him, things always work out for the best.......then he was gone. Two days later my son is asked to audition for the vacant bass job in a local band, and gets it. They will be opening April 2 in Hampton Virginia for Craig Morgan. Guess Jerry was right after all...........strange but 100% true i promise you.

I had a dream a few weeks ago when I fell asleep listening to Terrapin Station with my headphones on. The dream was not long or detailed, all I can remember is hundreds of upright turtles dancing and turning in synchronization similar to a marching bands form. It is a great mental picture that I will keep forever.

But it seems when ever I dream about a dead show or any other concert, they are always full of anxiety. There are always obsticles and I always seem to run very slow. It really pisses me off. Sometimes I finally get there and I forget my car keys or something and I have to leave then fight to get back in again. I think the key to it all folks is LUCID dreaming. Cause then anything can happen and YOU are in control.I'm tired...

Vell, in dis story it is interesting to zee dat Pamie's ego & id are clashing and trying to settle for 1/4 of Weir. You can't get a 1/4 of Weir, Pamie -- take my word for it. My Rx is to use my 12% solution after dinner after evening.

So in my dream I had a phone call in France telling me that there was a big Further Festival coming up in the USA and they wanted ME , Cosmic Badger, to organise all the supplementary entertainment (secondary stages and bands, décor, programmes, all that kind of thing). So we cut months forward to the Festival and all appears to be going quite well. Midway through I am summoned to a big meeting to discuss my performance. Phil is there, and Marye and Gypsy Cowgirl and Buddy Plant and they are really nice to me, but there is also a big group of what I can only describe as self-appointed snobby 'Deadhead Aristocracy' and they are being really mean, trashing everything I have done and sending me into a complete panic Then I wake up! Insecure? Moi? LOL

Those are some grateful dreams everyone. I can relate... especially PonchoBill's. I had one a few nights back where Larry Campbell was trying to teach me how to play bass guitar. All I can say (or ask) is; how the heck does Phil do THAT... and why does God hate people named Larry? Sorry to LC... but I'm all thumbs it seems ; - ) Where the heck is Mr. Campbell these daze... does anyone know? I miss him... Thus the dream takes on a bizarre quality as images that, normally kept apart, are blended. The dreamer has entered the unconscious mind, and there is synchronicity going on all over the place. -Fred Alan Wolf-The Dreaming Universe: A mind-expanding journey into the realm where psyche and physics meet.I enjoy seeing the thoughts that arise from the mind of Dead.net. Sometimes the band will take some of these thoughts, find a song that fits, and blast it out to the universe in front of thousands. It's an honor to be part of the dream, God Bless you Furthur Then please don't be surprized if you find me dreaming too

I've had around four dead dreams each month for the past year and a half. They are always intensely vivid and sometimes completely unexpected. Usually these dreams include many dayglo characters and anthropomorphic plants and animals. Sadly, one of my earliest dead memories is of Uncle Jerry's death. I was 5 years old and my dad took me to a vigil in Balboa Park, San Diego. Generally, all of my dead dreams take place in this park. I am usually with a few close friends walking through the park, drinking beers and telling jokes. In each dream, I hear the solo bridge from Not Fade Away to Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad played exactly like it is on Skull & Roses. This is always a treat for me because that section always sends me into a euphoric state. After recognizing the sounds, my friends and I stumble upon the guys playing in front of a large crowd in an orchestral amphitheater. Everybody is dancing and we join the party. When I wake up, I'm not disappointed that it didn't actually didn't happen. It's no sunshine daydream, but it is great to know that the dead jump out of my subconscious and into my dream reality. Hey, I must be doing something right. Also, I do get to talk to Phil about playing the bass. I wouldn't have it any other way. Live a good one. Very cool man.

but that does remind me that people have told me some great Dead Dream stories over the years so if you've had any recent adventures along these lines feel free to share them.
