    The Latest On Dave's Picks

    Limited Edition Numbered Archival Series

What happens when you take the spirit of Dick's Picks and combine it with the very best aspects of Road Trips? Dave's Picks! Esteemed archivist, vaultmeister, and all-around Dead fiend David Lemieux will curate the finest unreleased shows from the master tapes, brought to life with HDCD sonics by Jeffrey Norman, period photos, and informative liner notes. All four CD releases in 2012 will be limited to 12,000 individually numbered copies and each will come in a digipak printed on Orford stock. The entire packaging, including the trays, will be made of 100% recycled and PCW materials.

The series kicks off with a uniquely spectacular show from the highly regarded Spring Tour of '77 - May 25, 1977, The Mosque in Richmond, Virginia. You can learn more about this show here.

Dave's Picks Volume 2 will feature a complete Grateful Dead performance from the Wall of Sound tour, recorded live on 7/31/74 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford, CT. This was one of the final East Coast appearances by the Grateful Dead for almost two years, and is one of the longest, most exceptionally well-played shows of the entire year. The big jams stand out, of course, including "Weather Report Suite," "Eyes Of The World>China Doll" and "Truckin>several thematic jams," but the smaller songs, including a rare show-opening "Scarlet Begonias," "Mississippi Half-Step," "Big River," "Greatest Story Ever Told," "Uncle John's Band" and countless others are also excellent at this A+ show.

NEW INFO: In addition to all the great music, you can look forward to another digipak with trays made of 100% recycled and PCW materials (and of course a booklet featuring a historical essay and photos). Due to popular demand, we'll be using a heavier paper stock for Volume 2 and all the great Dave's Picks releases to come.

Throughout the year, David will take you behind the scenes and share with you the process of curating and producing the official Grateful Dead archival series. Watch the new video below and his introductory video at the bottom!

Dude! I just sent David Lemieux an email requesting that he revisit this show!!!!!!!! It is so amazing right? From the first note through the last note! Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Light the song with sense of color.
Keep the music flowing......but please, please, please, let us see some glorious packaging for this series. The Dead scene has the most far-out artists at their fingertips, let's tap into that for the covers. Since it is a limited pressing, wouldn't it make sense to use some archival or at least durable materials? Then, let's house the discs in proper casing, with protective sleeves to keep the discs pristine (limited edition right?). We know the sound will be euphoric. The Europe '72 sets were disappointing, by that I mean, music = A+, materials = D, disgraceful. Let's do this right from now on people.... I♡GD

A lot of people were OVERBOARD exuberant about the E72 release, so if I worked for Rhino/GDP, I'd say fuck it, they got the mother load- who cares what comes next? haha

Maybe the filler would be from a fall show instead of another spring show. A number of the fall shows have been released piecemeal on DP 29, DP 34, and RT 1.2. Would be nice to have more songs from those shows... EDIT: Another idea...why not include the songs omitted from 5/22/77?

no fillers like on the "To Terrapin" release would be a real big disappointment;please dave please pick some, you got about an hour space!

The songs not included from 5/22/77- that's an excellent idea for bonus material. It would be great to see the response if a portion of 5/8/77 is chosen as bonus. I don't think this show is in the Vault, although the Dancin is included on the Beyond Description Box Set

So I was counting up the archival releases and it looks like it past 100 somewhere in Road Trips. Would have been cool to have done something special for the 100th Archival release. or I guess it could've been during the Europe 72 22 Cd box set.

After the recent meeting of the Archival Committee, there was a motion to invert the numbering of certain releases, so that the Europe 72 Box Set is the 100th Release. The Chair did second that emotion, and the proposal is now Grateful Law.

It depends on what you count and when you start counting. For archival releases, I'd say it's been pretty much everything since One From The Vault in 1991. The two releases prior to that would have been Without A Net and Infrared Roses, documenting recent tours. I counted 73 Grateful Dead (no Garcia, Weir, Lesh, Other Ones, The Dead, etc) releases comprising archival live and studio recordings -- 60 physical and 13 download from 1991-2005. Fillmore West 1969 box set and compilation is one release, and I also included So Many Roads, Birth of the Dead, and Rare Cuts & Oddities, but not The Golden Road or Beyond Description reissues. Then from 2007-2011 (no releases in 2006), I counted 26 distinct releases. All of Europe 72 including Vol 2 is a single "release" to me, which would be #98. #99 is RT 4.5. That would make Daves Picks Vol. 1 #100. However, I did not count the 2 Road Trips downloads. Those are a bit different than the comp releases for FW69 and E72, so if you want to count 'em then E72 would be #100... And now I realize I forgot Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions. Like I said, it depends on how you count. :)

I realize it's not appropriate to count the high majority of bonus discs as discrete archival releases, but some absolutely were just that. Bonus discs that shipped with Rockin' the Rhein orders from GDM, to cite one example, was an amazing set of tracks from the Academy of Music shows in Mar-72. There were others of similar quality and value, i think. Now don't you wish you ordered Skeletons From The Closet from Rhino?

Maybe the new Dave's Picks graphics are because the Grateful Dead is out of this world. Like it's the music of the Universe- Either that or Han Solo is a huge Dark Star fan

I hear what you're saying marye, but I'm also seeing what I'm seeing. I've got my comment viewing options set to 300 comments per page, so I can see the first 300 posts on one page, but on post 301, the posts numbers begin again, meaning that my post above is numbered 8, not 308, yours is numbered 9, not 309, etc. I don't know if I'm making this clear, but there seems to be a glitch in the post numbering system that the site engineers should probably know about.

from what I can tell, each page's posts are numbered starting at 1, so if you have 50 per page, yes, the first post on that page is 1 and the last is 50, whereas if you have 300 per page, the last is 300. in short, no, they are not indexed from the beginning of the topic, they're indexed by the page, however you define the page.

This is off topic, so reader please be advised. My Dad asked me for a CD of Jerry songs, a mix disc. The challenge was I really couldn't include any long jams, so the Dark Star from 2/13/70, not an option. Here's the mix, in order of appearance: Might As Well 10/10/76 Uncle John's Band 12/28/88 Franklin's Tower 8/13/75 Brown Eyed Women 2/3/78 Peggy'O 5/10/78 Iko-Iko 7/7/89 Jack-A-Roe 5/17/77 They Love Each Other 11/9/73 World To Give 10/17/78 Let It Rock 6/23/74 Sitting On Top Of The World 5/23/72 Scarlet 3/23/74 US Blues 6/9/77

In Blair's Golden Road feature, he described how lucky we are to have Bill Graham in our lives. I feel the same is true about David Lemieux. It's amazing how much music is available for us- the Taper's Section, Jam Of The Week, 30 Days Of The Dead. And the Box Sets from the past few years- the magnitude of the Europe Box and the Road Trips series. More than twenty Dick's Picks were released after Dick departed. And we have yet to begin the thrilling journey of Dave's Picks! To say we're lucky to have Dave in our lives is a huge understatement. Thank You!! And a big Thanks to all those involved for producing so beautifully the magnificent sounding releases, perhaps most notably Jeffrey Norman. I hope it's known how much we appreciate all of your efforts.

I do not know if these new corporate dead heads realize it or not, but most of the fans can not afford such material-especially on a limited time frame! Again, the spirit of dead head collectivism is shrouded in greed. You woke up to the fact with Europe '72 "limited" crap, and got enough complaints where you decided to release the shows (Cd's) separately! You regained my faith in alternative choices amongst capitalistic gain! But again? Time to re-name Dead.net...."Shakedown Street." I really do feel the Grateful Dead experience has been co-opted by high priced shows that we tapers gave away for free or traded with each other. Guess that don't apply here! I get it, we all gotta eat and pay the bills, but come on give a poor man a break!

Why do we have to pay for stuff? Why don't the people at dead.net dedicate their lives to giving us stuff for free or what we decide to pay for it when we want. This is not asking too much is it. I'm sure everybody on this site is dedicated to giving everybody else what they want free when they want it.

I've seen many negative comments in this thread, and I am a bit perplexed why folks are expecting freebies. These discs do cost money to produce, and much of this cost is incurred prior to production. If dead.net were to give this away for free, they would be taking a significant loss - not a sustainable business model. If you want the music for free, go to the archives and get it at the cost of your internet connection. Otherwise, I'd suggest you "occupy a job". :) This would make such a purchase within your financial means.

The most recent posts here call to mind a couple of scenes from GD film history, namely, 1) the protesters in Festival Express who demanded that the music should be made freely available to the people, which Weir responds to on camera and to which the GD responded by staging a free show in a local park, and 2) the audience interviews in the GD Movie, where one freak is talking about how the GD were exploiting the audience members by filming them and not paying them. My point, if I have one, is that the subject matter of the most recent posts in here is not at all a new phenomena. It seems that as long as this thing of ours has been around there's been those who think that it should be free. That's just silly, I think, servers and bandwidth cost money, and I believe that there should always be those who apply that kind of pressure. The worlds determines us, but in only relation to how much we're willing to push back.

It seems like Rhino has learned it's lesson. Still, don't give any credit till it all comes out. I have seen so many blow off their subscription to Dave's because of E72. You have to really want this product to trust them enough to get it to you in the right condition on time.

Count me among the many applauding the decision for the Dave's Picks digipaks. Thank You!! A guess for the second Dave's Picks: An epic journey into 1974- May 17 specifically. And the bonus disc to include the mammoth 45 minute Playin from 5/21.

The biggest concern I had about digipacks was the use of plastic - and wow, whaddya know, they are going to be made of recycled materials :-). I recently read Jerry's comment (in the "Beyond Description" liner notes) about visiting the record pressing plant during the Grateful Dead Records period. He was dismayed at the "sweatshop" conditions and the toxic nature of vinyl chloride. He called it a "bummer trip" and said something about how anyone who knew what went on in the record pressing plants would never want to support them. As far as I can tell Jerry never went further than that comment. But it seems that Rhino/Dead.net *are* taking it further. Thanks for this decision folks. I am feeling better and better about my subscription to Dave's Picks! (Also, I love the organic cotton "Reuse, Recycle, Renew" shirt (I sure hope my wife got me that for Christmas!) Please accept this as my humble vote for more of this - shirts made in sustainable ways, fair trade practices, recycled material, and so on). THANK YOU.

Here are my *broad* "predictions" (okay, wish list) for the last three picks of 2012. That would make three different decades (counting the Mosque release) and four different band configurations: --- October or November 1972 (with a bonus from a Fall '72 show that is only partially in the Vault). Hmmm the May 1974 call would be sweet too. --- 1984 (though I've gotten a strong Spring '86 vibe lately - hyummmm... April) --- 1967! (perhaps a Road Trips approach?) But whatever. It'll all be good. Dave is good at surprises (I mean, I wouldn't have guessed that one of my favorites in the 30 Days of Dead would be "Just a Little Light"!) First 2013 release - Winterland and Lindley Meadow 1975, together in one beee-ooo-tee-ful four disc release, complete with a new cover by Phillip Garris (who did the Blues for Allah cover). Drool.

I think the obvious release for 1967 is a 3-disc set of 22 October and 10 and 11 November. As for 1966, as others have said, the British Columbia Trips Festival shows could be very nice.

Seems like if these shows were being sold individually as well, we'd be able to buy them by now (they are shipping in Feb). What with them being limited to 12,000 copies each (a whole 'nother issue), it is possible they sold out. Is it clear that the only way to purchase them is through a subscription? Maybe I missed that.

It's just my guess but more than likely they'll wait til the sign up for the subscription for the year has ended and then sell whatever is left of the 12,000 individually (leftovers for 1 in Feb., leftovers for 2 in May and so on).

(I posted this on the RT4.5 page but wanted to post this here as a cautionary tale. I'm a RT (and now a DP) subscriber but my RT never showed up.) So over a month ago Customer Service told me a replacement disc would be sent. I emailed yesterday to ask when I should expect to receive it and the guy conceded that it hadn't actually been sent. He blamed the "high demand" period of December. How does that justify doing nothing about escalating the request to send me what I ordered and paid for a year ago? Now I see why so many people on here get angry about the service and shipping. I haven't had problems in the past but this is outrageous. Starting to wonder why I bothered with Dave's Picks if this is the level of "service" one gets from Customer Service: stories about what's going to be done then excuses about why it wasn't.

is when a situation occurs like Little Ben Clock has encountered. If the "Dave's Picks" sell out (either 12000 subscriptions are sold, or less than that number but the leftovers sell out before the release date) then what happens in the case of an order that doesn't arrive or a disc is faulty? My guess is that they will make more than 12000 sets of discs but only 12000 numbered booklets/inlays. If they do that, they will be able to cover problems such as faulty discs - but not disappearing orders. If they make just 12000 numbered booklets/inlays, then folks who have problems with their orders not arriving will be deep in the doo-doo! Time will tell. As this is my first post on here this year, I will take this opportunity to wish everybody a (belated) happy new year.
