Thank you sir from the bottom of my heart, and my entire soul. I've always wanted to tell you that i feel like you never got nearly the full credit you deserve. This may be a blessing in disguise but i hope you realize many of us that have this overwheling unconditional love for Jerry Garcia are really in love with your words. I in no way am diminishing the Music. It is my favourite thing in the world when it's "on", it brings us all to that special place that i have no words for. Then once we are in that place some of the most important lessons i have ever learned are from the words that you wrote, or were somehow written through you. I think Hunter has said on a few occasions that sometimes it takes years for him to even understand what his songs are about. Thanks, i just needed to finally say that somehwere

thanks for all the great music you have done. If you ever do another east coast tour we sure would like to see you out here in JIM THORPE, PA. There is a really nice place out here called Penns Peak and i think you would fit in just right. Ratdog plays there a lot and it would be really great if you can make it out here some day. I never got to see one of your shows and i sure would like to. I taught myself how to play a harmonica and i can strum a few cords but i must say you have inspired me so much in the way you play. thanks. We all hope to see you soon somewhere out here in north east PA. Thanks, Norm K.
lyrics
Dear Robert,
Thanks for all the great music through the years!
My beautiful 20 year old daughter Holly Rogers, was a huge fan! She particularly
loved the lyrics oftentimes. Her favorite was the Bird Song. She had written part of the lyrics
and had it hanging in her room, for several years. On November 11, 2007, Holly was killed
by a drunk driver, who hit her head on, on the wrong side of the highway, going 90mph. It was and is still too painful to say, hear, or think about even three months later. She
was a ray of sunshine, and like a little bird she never stopped, and was a constant source
of joy, kindness and humor to all who knew her.
In trying for months to decide what I wanted to write on her gravemarker, it finally hit me!
For Holly's Wake, her best friend had painted the beautiful lyrics for Holly, in her memory
and we placed it beside her casket. I would really like to use some of the lyrics on her grave marker, because that is what she would want, and they really describe how she came
here, sang, and then flew on (way too early). She loved to laugh in the sunshine, sleep in the
stars, and she would not want tears for her passing! She came to bring happiness, and she did. I just wanted to tell you, since you wrote the lyrics, and thank you for her
epitaph. Sincerely, Danette - Holly's heartbroken mom

May God bless you and your family. I am very sorry for your loss. I lost my sister 2mths after Garcia passed away, we were only 14mths apart from birth and very ,very close. She lost her life almost the same way as your sweet Holly. My sister Linda loved music and she was a good singer, she was full of life all the time and brought a smile to everyone she talked too. Bird Song is my favorite song too and when i feel sad I sing that song to myself all the time. (thank you mr. Hunter for the great tune) and my God bless us all. Nemo

So sorry for your loss, your sweet Holly is an angel now....**If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passin' by,
Laugh in the sunshine, sing, cry in the dark, fly through the night.
**She will live on in your memories** :) Peace
Enormous Thank You
Hello:
The words you wrote that Jerry and others developed melodies for have been an eternal inspiration.
Many people here have said many nice things about you, and your gift. I, and many others consider the words and phrases paramount to the Dead's ability to communicate feelings to the masses. Thanks, because we are forever owing to the words from which the melody is derived from.
Not always right, but never been wrong, YEAH!
many thanks
Robert,Much appreciation and a thousand thank-yous,
Your words have touched my life in an ineffably profound manner.
Request to use line of lyrics from 'Scarlet Begonias' for novel
Dear Robert,Hi, my name is Stephanie Geman-Marcotte. Please read the draft of the letter below which I have written (but not yet sent) to: Ice Nine Publishing Company, Inc.
I am asking for your blessing in my request and any additional help or suggestions that you would be willing to provide in my quest to obtain formal permission for the use of a line of your lyrics which plays a pivotal role in the development the plot in my sci-fi novel, 'Scarlet Begonias'.
In addition, would you be able to help me obtain a soundboard quality recording of the show from 4/27/1991 in Las Vegas (which I attended) where many chapters in the book take place.
You can read the first page and a sample chapter at my website www.SciFiSteph.com. I would be happy to provide you with a current draft of my novel if it would help you to make your decision.
Please reply to Steph@SciFiSteph or send a message within Facebook.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Geman-Marcotte

Dear Ice Nine Publishing Company:
I am requesting permission to use “Scarlet Begonias” as the title of a novel I am writing and plan to submit for publication within the next year. I am also asking for permission to reprint the following lines from said song “Scarlet Begonias” (lyrics by Robert Hunter, music by Jerry Garcia) – song first appeared on the 1974 release Grateful Dead from the Mars Hotel:
“I ain't often right, but I've never been wrong, It seldom turns out the way it does in the song. Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right”
This request is for permission to include the above content as part of the following book that I have almost completed:
"Scarlet Begonias" is a 103,000-word, sci-fi novel about Suzi Greenberg’s existential coming-of-age. An exploration of the entangled relationship between the measurement of evolution and the evolution of measurement drives this story toward Suzi’s eventual rescue from Sumbebekos and the simultaneous salvation of the universally accepted perception of existence.
Scientist Josh Weinstein is very concerned. An undeniable and unpredictable “mass drift” of the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK) has become evident. And even though a drift of 50 micrograms per year is acceptable and amounts to no more than ‘the breath of God’, Josh senses its deeper significance - does something exist if it can't be measured?
Mannie Foldsky, Josh's friend and fellow scientist, has finally perfected The Ouisa, a chemical catalyst for accelerated evolution. He assembles a band of Psycho-Cartographers to make a map, charting the landscape of a new, heightened sense of perception.
Suzi Greenberg is in trouble. Teek, a Wiccan glass blower, has invited her to join him and follow their favorite band across the country. Against the advice of her college roommate, Eve Mendel, and her on-again off-again boyfriend, Drake Driscol, she heads west after graduation with the Heart of Gold Coven to pursue enlightenment before being thrust into adulthood.
Veelura, Teek’s sister and High Priestess of the coven, has a Helping Friendly Book and wants to watch Suzi unravel her ego as suggested in the book to determine just how friendly her book really is. But Cassidy, Teek’s niece, believes that Suzi is in danger and contacts Eve in the dreamscape.
With Cassidy’s help, the Psycho-Cartographers determine Suzi’s coordinates on the map of perception, and use the IPK's missing mass to catapult through the negative curvature of phase-cancelled space to reach Suzi at a Grateful Dead show in Las Vegas.
Camouflaged by the second set light show, the Psycho-cartographers emerge, undetected in the middle of a stellar version of “Scarlet Begonias” to rescue Suzi who’d been psychically drained by the Helping Friendly Book and abandoned at the horizon of the dense vacuum of nothingness.

Put it this way. It is unlikely that Robert Hunter will read this. You will be better served by writing a letter in good form and sending it to Alan Trist at Ice Nine, as he is the right person for this, rather than posting a draft of what you intend to send here.
