Wow! That huge spiral spinning in rain and snow from San Francisco to Anchorage looks awesome on the radar. The zone of 8-10" of rains runs right up the coast. Hope everybody out there stays dry and warm!

hybrid Sandy a sign of things to come?
Well, we made it... sort of -- 100s of thousands without power, billions in damage, my favorite beach in RI wrecked (thanks for the images Weather Channel!). This was razor close to the perfect storm. A Lunar high tide combining with the onshore winds combined with a straight-line storm with barometric pressure at 940 millibars (a record) pushed a record 13 foot tidal surge into into Battery Park,Manhattan with subways flooding out. It could have been worse. With 22 foot waves crashing on the lake shore in Chicago and Cleveland I don't know how much more it could have been worse!. This thing is still a pain in the ass with people buried under 26 inches of snow and no power in WV and the storm spreading from Chicago to SC still today with 30-50mph winds. I think this is a hybrid model that will repeat, not necessarily with the hurricane component unless it is the season, because of global warming. If anything, this has shown me how helpless we are in the face of nature's global warming wallop. This was in an in-your-face-warning.

This is the largest hurricane in history (900 miles) and will flood the NY subway, shred the Atlantic City boardwalk and send storm surges 6-11 feet in the NY-Long Island-CT area. The NYSE is closed, possibly for the week. Hope the power stays on! Stay safe!

We took a trip up to Burke Mtn. and Northern Vermont and the foliage was brilliant and electric. The show Mother Nature puts on these few weeks each year never fails to give me pause to think of beauty. -- All the more this year as they have just announced the tearing down of paradise and putting up of a parking lot. Well, the humidity is rising and the barometer's is getting low. According to all of the sources, the street looks the best place to go.Because, i believe, tonight, for the very first time, probably around half past ten, and for the first time in history, it's gonna start raining men. Hallelujah.

Huh? What does that mean, Slo? You work in a green house? Jeezum' crow. I walk outside my AC and my gut turns to liquid. I can't imagine toiling in 115 degree heat! I do remember working on a roof one summer in Furnace, Kentucky and even with a headband on there was a continuous stream of sweat rolling into my eyes! Keep watching that lettuce grow so slow, Slo... And stay hydrated!

Feels more like 92 million lately. I work every day in greenhouses in the upper midwest where we have had 30+ days above 90 and 4 above 100; hottest summer on record so far and still going strong. the greenhouses we work in all day run easily 15 deg. above the ambient temps. when that fat old sun is a shinin' and if the wind ain't blowin, there's no air moving in them at all. i'm not whining (yet) as i get to enjoy the wonderful benefits of piped lightning when i get home. Somebody much smarter than me figured out how to distrubute it long ago and i get to reap the benefits (as long as i continue to pay for it is my understanding). I'm lucky to have ac and have used it liberally this summer. My father was born and raised on a farm in the midwest where he lived until the age of 8 before the family moved in to town and a house with modern (1946) amenities. Up until he was 8..... NO electricity, no indoor plumbing, etc.,folks, that means not even so much as a fan to blow the hot air around! I ask dad every year how in the hell they did it and he always says,"you got used to it whether you liked it or not and a tub full of cool well water did wonders". compared to that, i've got it pretty damn good. Those thin little lines hanging on those skinny wooden poles are the only things seperating us from "days of yore" ladies and gentlemen. Homeland security? my ass.

Warmed up to 30 degrees today in Erie, Pa., but the wind chill was 14 degrees, and we're up to about 8 inches of snow. More snow for the rest of the week and colder temps are returning tomorrow.

It's not supposed to be like this in the Bay Area. However my kids did get to play in the snow for the second time in their nine-year lives in the hills above our home. High of about 45 today, degrees that is.

Woke up to freezing rain, a bit of an icestorm. Our vehicles as well as everything else was a sheet of ice. Then it warmed up about 2 degrees and rained all day. Needless to say my work day as an Ironworker really sucked. Kept telling my crew, there's nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile!!!

We have had 40 inches of snow in January, now it is warming up a bit and then turning to slush and freezing at night. Schools have been closed most of this week. Alao a period in there of temps just above 0 F. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

cold and rainy today. Unfortunately all the flowering fruit trees were lured by the faux spring into bursting into bloom, which is probably not going to turn out well.

I learned that I will not be meeting with the clients today because ice is falling from the sky - this, of course, avails me the opportunity to have a burn-fest extraordinaire, fire up 2/21/69 and pray for better weather. "Where does the time go?"

They told us to stay home again - not that I'm complaining, I just miss the clients. Speaking of the clients, one of them, a sophomore, has been battling a malignant brain tumour. Sheis one of the sweetest girls - the song "Ripple" comes to mind - in the school and a drive was begun to help fund her mounting bills. The head of the drive said that if $6,000 were raised a day of school would be missed, a number of students would donate their locks and several teachers would shave their heads in front of everyone at the school. The day the news of $ raised and hair removal everyone wore rags that said "stay strong." Several local TV crews showed up to disseminate what had gone down and everyone was overwhelmed as over $21,000 had been raised. Taylor even helped shave a head! In the many years I've been teaching this event has really shown the way the community in which I work can come together - and for that I'm grateful. O.K., time for 2/22/69 and a taste more coffee. Rock on Dead people! "Where does the time go?"

Starting to cloud up here on the coast - it was a gorgeous morning though! I'm spoiled, and am tired of rain! Back home where my hubby and son live, they're tired of snow (something like 80 inches this year so far?), so I guess I shouldn't complain. but hey! It's Southern California, dammit; it's supposed to be sunny!

Steve-O, you must be in my latitude. NOAA says we're going for 34 degrees today, & this will be the first day like that since, I think, early January. I'm trying to figure out how to rig the lights to get the tomatoes & basil started indoors."Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world." And the hands, baby. Wanna get those hands dirty.

After our first snow of the year on Friday (1-3 inches) we had a snow day! Yeah! A perk of being a teacher. Started to melt out entirely yesterday and now it's climbing up to low 40s, sunny, no precipitation in sight (yeah- no indoor recess for the kiddies!) Able to go sledding and build snow sculptures with my kids on Friday and saturday- perfect snow for it, not a lot of it, but perfect. I'm now ready for spring and getting the garden together....Ami
