maybe you should move to Carolina, Professor Devotion: SHAGGING'S A CAROLINA DUTY AND PLEASURE Published: September 10, 1989 To the Editor: Roy Attaway writes (''Shagging,'' Op-Ed, Aug. 18): ''Last April, I was in Columbia and was informed by the chamber of commerce - facetiously? - that the shag is now the state dance of South Carolina.'' For the record, the General Assembly of South Carolina designated the shag the official dance of South Carolina by Act 329 of 1984. The 1989 South Carolina legislative manual states: ''The shag, one of the great developments of terpsichorean culture and native to this state, is performed to music known as rhythm and blues.'' We Charlestonians have mixed emotions, as we (with a little help from Myrtle Beach) invented not only the shag but also another dance of some small renown - the Charleston. I read Roy Attaway's article on Sunday morning in Hilton Head, where the preceding night the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association had its annual convention dance. A large number of trial lawyers and half the state's judiciary spent Saturday evening confirming the wisdom of the General Assembly by doing the shag! ROBERT N. Shagging
While shagging some fly balls at my college athletic facility years ago, I witnessed as a shag was struck by a baseball and nearly killed. My teammates and I picked the creature up and carried it to the vehicle of our captain, who was also an instructor at the school. As the bird lay dazed on the shag carpet of the college lecturer's panel van's floor (shaggin' wagon) we attempted to calm our nerves by smoking some freshly rolled shag. Within a few moments, the shag began to reclaim it's faculties and attempted to stand but due to the lingering shock, it began to shag around hysterically, which caught the attention of a stray shaggy dog passing nearby. The dog bolted towards the bird unbeknownst to most of our group with the exception of a rather shy lad named Karl, who sported a '70's style shag haircut. I hadn't noticed the impending tragedy due to my attention being distracted by the attractive beauty of a collegian, named Vanessa Kensington. God she was beautiful! I'm sure she could shag like a minx! As I drifted off in the blissful lust of an afternoon daydream, my reality was shattered by the sound of high pitched human screams, deep bestial groans and the sound of clawing against the enamored sheet metal of the van's floor and walls. Wow, I was shagging Vanessa rotten! Dreams do come true! I've often wondered how that fucking bird got away from that mangy dog. Oh, well. All's well that end's well... All right guard, begin the unnecessarily slow-moving dipping mechanism.

I enjoyed the eclipse alot. It was ruined for me though by a bunch of kids yelling and screaming as well as people not knowing that the more light there is, the less you can see the beautiful heavens. Found a quiet field with some friends and took some great pictures and we laid on my huge old indian blanket and listened to dark side of the moon. Perfect night. We encountered some howling coyotes but they were cool about it and left us alone. almost a spiritual night.

I sort of shudder when I recall being faced with my US History term paper. But I did have the then current Mars Hotel to egg me and my manual typewriter on. That was at a school I'm guessing to be about 80 - 100 miles further east from you, and right on the ocean, so what little snow we got never lasted very long. Whatever point you choose to make, just make it coherently. That's really all that matters. Keep yer chin up and bang it out. You'll do fine. Hey Kid, Sorry to hear of your troubles. When I was back there in seminary prep school we had a variety of creative ways to insure access to Things We Weren't Supposed To Have. Not that I'm encouraging any such behavior, mind you. Just bragging. In any event, if you have a formal diagnosis from a licensed practitioner including a treatment regimen, won't your infirmary dispense for you? I know it's a nuisance to have to trudge over there periodically, but it's better than nothing. If your school has one of those asinine policies that forbids them from dispensing over the counter meds, then go back to your doctor and ask him for an actual prescription. That's something they probably can't choose to ignore. Feel better soon! You can't row if you can't breathe. i'm a newbie to the site and have been into the G.D. for about a year now. i'm only 17 so i have never been to a show and i was wondering if i am classifide as a certain kind of fan. i understand to be a dead head you have to go to shows, at least thats what i heard, but that would be a hard thing to do these days. would i be considered just "a fan" or do i have some cool name i can use. thanks

Well you could use the name, Jimi, that is a totally cool one.But seriously, as serious as I can be about this topic. Hee, hee. Now some may disagree but I think that all you need to be a Deadhead is that you really love that music and that it is part of who you are, almost a guiding force or grounding place. I myself only made it to 9 shows, and I know that would not be enough for some to consider me a "Deadhead", but the music and band have been a big part of my life for 35 years, so I do consider myself a Deadhead and many of my friends do to. I think it is something in your heart, it is how the music moves your spirit. Peace, welcome aboard. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. well being a kind of second-hand deadhead, relying on the albums and live recordings, i have found that not many other kids my age, at least around where i live, dig the Dead the way i do. most kids i try to introduce to the Dead say they don't get the sound and i have always speculated why that was.i decided that the Grateful Dead have an almost liquid soud, it flows through you, you know, when you listen it just seeps through and almost doesn't register as music, more like sound perfection, to me at least. to try and clarify what i'm struggling to say, its something special in the listener, a connection to the music. for instance, i like to drink water alot and can tell the different tastes of diffrent waters (weird i know) but everyone else says water is water. the Dead's music is the best damn water i have ever poured in my ears :) but everyone i try and tell that to says music is music, water is water. i think they're crazy (but their also young) anyone have thoughts on this?

(on the bottom something in reply to deadheadkid's comment, too, which might be fun to Hal R also) and maybe not the last verbal hug from the dead.net people. I signed in here in early January, about a week before my 52nd birthday. Never been to a Grateful Dead concert. And knowing that being a German, living in Germany is just a weak excuse for having missed them. So don't worry at all. Would have chimed in earlier, but I did not read and post that much during the last few weeks, mainly because I am downloading and burning CDs like nuts, after I got aware of the bittorrent universe. So now I am lucky to read all the posts in this forum, that are new to me, and add something. As a seasoned rookie (poet, percussionist & storyteller, too). That "liquid sound" thing is the real one to me. Music/lyrics can touch ones mind, soul or body. But the best is, when it gets through to this trinity of what we are. And that's what the Grateful Dead music/lyrics does to a lot of people. (In case you are interested, send me a PM ... click on my name on top of this post, wait until you can click on the "Send a private message" (or something like that) ... and then we might get into about some music that moves the two of us and exchange some of it. I know some good "water" aside the Grateful Dead and I am curious what you jounggun like, aside the Grateful Dead). deadheadkid wrote that "Sound is the spice of lLife" and the saying "in the beginning there was the sound" (bible) comes to mind. Which is the same as what hinduists and buddhists experience (and know) regarding the mantra OM ... And now imagine my wild yelling, dance and laughter (mind, soul and body involved), when I read that the core/big one in that mantra is the space between the O and the M ... which is silence/nothing. Where we all come from and will return to. And I'd liek to add that after marye wrote that "you sure sound like a Deadhead to me", you don't have to worry any more. And I completely agree with Hal, who wrote that you could use your name as your name. And take an old farts advice, check out the difference between (speakig out loud) "My name is Jimi Clark" and "I am Jimi Clark". Drown in/Dance on/Be a Ripple (lyrics by Robert Hunter), bro. andré
