    1982-04-10 Jerry solo acoustic

    Hi Everyone-
Its been a while since I started a vine so I thought I'd get this one going.
I forget all the particulars of this Jerry show but off the top of my head, here's a brief summary. Jerry and John Kahn were doing a brief tour together (just the two of them) and Kahn fell ill. Hence, Jerry acoustic solo for one night only! Included here are the early show and the two sets of the late show that Jerry played. This night was a real treat for anyone who attended.
The quality of these audio recordings is good, not great like the recent sbds we've been vining. And also, more troubling is the Rueben and Cherise encore of the second show that fades out. Every time I listen to it, I get annoyed about it, but being a completist, or in this case, partial completist, I'm going to include it here. Despite those facts, I consider this show to be a must have.

    Early show:
    Deep Elem Blu

The Dead were playing the Nassau Coliseum in Hempstead on Long Island, NY. It was 3 shows over Easter. They took a break between the 2nd & last show. Jerry wanted to play a show & he ended up at the Capital Theater in NJ. I believe news 1st spread by word of mouth & then by a local radio station (I lived in the area at the time). I don't remember if John was sick but he did tour with him later on his solo runs. Jerry was amazing as he usually was, The crowd was just as amazing. I remember we became his rhythm section at times. The different sections (i believe there were 3) I've seen Jerry many times in the JGB format & w/ John Kahn but this show just sparkled. He was so nervous at 1st that if you said BOO, he would have probably jumped out of his skin. As he played he got more comfortable & really started to get into it. By the end of the night the audience just wanted to give him a big warm hug (& of course we did). I was outside the venue after the show was over just hanging around & out he pops from a side door w/ the famous briefcase in hand (another day at the office). This was before he put on so much weight. I'm not a big guy myself, but he was smaller than I was at the time. I said hi & he said hello & then ducked into the waiting limo. We actually were "followed" back to Long Island by his limo as we drove back home. Kinda cool, like sorta having him riding shotgun w/ us. Anyway, back to the CD's, I have the complete ending on my copies. Recording is good, not great but listenable. Not sure how you guys go about "seeding" I just popped onto the forums the other day (just poking around). I was given these at last years 10KLF at the Wharf Rat table. Thanks to the donor!

I remember that show. Jerry was so nervous when he came out. (4th row) I remember Jerry, his guitar, a stool to sit on, a stool for his cigs & a glass of water. Nuthin else!!! Amazing night!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, I'm sitting here & just remembered someone turning me onto copies of this show on cd... I just happened to stumble on them again. Gotta check the quality. I'll get back to ya. I have both early & late shows... off to the deck for checking. Franko

Every version of this Jerry solo show I've seen has the same date (4/10/82) but I'm just researching it and it seems somewhat unlikely. I say this because on 4/9 the Dead played in Rochester, NY, which is pretty far upstate. Then on 4/11 the Dead played the first of two nights at the Nassau Coliseum (Easter Sunday and my very first show). While I know that Jerry was a guitaraholic and all, it just seems odd that he would have booked a show for he and Kahn on this "travel day" between Rochester and Long Island. I've made that drive and it's a good six hours. Anyone else have info on this?

Couldn't wait to open this one, just Jer and his acoustic. It'll be on it's way to Brewsterboy tomorrow. Thanks to all! His job is to shed light, not to master...

Aside from the double post, I guess Operator started this one, so thanks to him for the vine and thanks to Marye for the work here. His job is to shed light, not to master...

The date on this show is correct. Jerry did perform by himself on this night in between Dead shows. This was the only time that he performed alone. Two nights after the dead completed their East Coast tour, Garcia teamed up with John Kahn and did some shows on the coast. I do believe this started the two doing East Coast shows until 1984.

The date on the show is correct, in between 2 GD shows. I assume he would fly from Rochester to the next gig. I went to the early show, we got there almost late, a bunch of us rode in my friends VW bus, we quickly parked the bus, ran in and caught the early show. After the show we forgot where we parked, and wandered around Passaic, NJ - which was a scary area - looking for the bus. Just as I told one of my friends "act like we know where we're going" my other friend, whose bus it was, screams at the top of his lungs " Where the Fuck are We?!?!?! " We finally found the bus which had been broken into. For years we joked about the graffitti we saw that night "fuck the people who fuck" - Odd graffitti to say the least. (sorry for all the profanity, not my style, but part of the story). The next night we were off to Nassua for 2 nights with the good ole GD. This show was billed as solo acoustic. The story I heard was Jerry was uncomfortable playing solo, but had snother acoustic shows planned, at NYC's Beacon Theater 4-21-82, he called his buddy John Kahn to help out, and the JG/JK shows began. Another interesting show during this time period is the 5-5-82 Oregon State Prison Garcia-Kahn show. Funny thing is, I listened to this recording just the other day and it occcured to me how lucky I am to have been there, along with all the early 80's JGB shows in the NY area. Never saw the band on the West Coast, but NY was a great home base for a young Deadhead in the 80's & 90's.

Hey everyone, I've had this vine for a couple days now and it has been ready to go since day 1. However I don't have Warlocks info and I sent him a PM 2 days ago that he hasn't replied to yet. So if anyone has his address please let me know and in the meantime Sakparadise please send me your info just in case Warlock doesn't come around in a couple days. Thanks everyone, keep on vining. --Christian

and probably never mailed it. He has several vines stalled at the moment that he said he was going to mail. He said he had a car accident a while back, so hopefully he's ok and will re-surface and get to the Post Office ! I just re-seeded my Cal Expo 1989 vine because he has had it for over six weeks. Another problem on down the list is Chinacat 503, who'se been missing for a while now. I'll ask around to see if a re-seed is possible... -Tommo
