Okay, folks, here's the plan as we roll over into the next stage of vining. Each vine will have its own topic. As has been noted once or twice before, Iz and I are the only ones who can start topics. Hence, if somebody has a vine they want to start, post the particulars here. Then Iz or I will cruise by, start the new topic, and delete the post from the New Vines area so it doesn't get unwieldy. We'll see how this goes...

    Fall '77: Part 1
I'd like to plant a new vine. 3 fine shows from the fine Fall '77 tour. 9/29 Seattle, 10/14 Houston and 10/29 DeKalb. Everyone has probably heard of the DeKalb show and a lot of people may already have it, but the other 2 are a little less widely circulated. I believe that all 3 shows are gapless and I will burn them on I-Tunes to maintain the continuity from track to track. One quick caveat, the 9/29 show starts off a little weak sound quality wise as Betty did not flip some switch or something (see Taper's Compendium for story) until just before Grow. The Franklin's Tower that ends the first set alone makes this show worth getting by itself but the second set is great as well. First person PM their address. 'Nuff said, here is the info from Deadlists. 9/29/77, Seattle, Paramount Theater One Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [9:19] ; Mama Tried [2:39] ; Deal [#4:16] ; Looks Like Rain [6:36] ; Ramble On Rose [6:59] ; El Paso [#0:31] ; Sugaree [12:#30] ; Let It Grow [9:30] ; Franklin's Tower [16:42] Two Samson And Delilah [6:23] ; Ship Of Fools [6:59] ; Estimated Prophet [9:31] > He's Gone [11:04] > Drums [4:37] > Truckin' [9:#40] > Stella Blue [12:59] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:58] > Johnny B. Goode [4:15] Encore Uncle John's Band [9:49#] Comments: Recordings SBD 180 with the following cuts: A minute or two off the beginning of Deal; El Paso is missing all but the final verse; the splices In Sugaree and Truckin' appear To be minor tape flips; And Uncle John's Band cuts off near the end, It is not A major cut. 10/14/77 Houston, Hofheinz Pavilion, U of Hou One Jack Straw [5:03] ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [11:22] > El Paso [4:06] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:53] ; New Minglewood Blues [5:05] ; Loser [7:#09] ; Passenger [3:24] ; Friend Of The Devil [8:13] ; Me And My Uncle [3:08] ; Tennessee Jed [8:46] ; The Music Never Stopped [4:16#] Two Bertha [7:08] > Good Lovin' [5:59] ; Candyman [7:28] ; Playing In The Band [16:#56] > Drums [3:35] > The Wheel [7:15] > Wharf Rat [13:49] > Around And Around [8:23] Encore Brokedown Palace [5:51] > Playing In The Band [4:13#] Comments: Recordings SBD 180. Cuts In Loser And Playing In The Band are relatively minor tape flips, cutting off of the Music Never Stopped is criminal And likely On the master. Playing In The Band Reprise cutoff is probably less than A minute. 10/29/77 DeKalb, Evans Field House, N. Ted finally catches on / I put in a suggestion for a Feb 1973 vine. I can be a source, if necessary!

The original Vindex was up to Dec 31st 2007 (see P 8). Bob has spurrred me to update it. Also I am still happy to share a simple Excel spreadsheet showing dates of all GD shows, locations, dates of official releases and active vines. Just PM me your email address and I will send as an attachment. For the updated list and I would recomend the Excel spreadsheet he has to all, that is how I keep track of my shows. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

on CBs list, no wonder I've been busy years not represented are 65, 66, 75,76, 79, 84, 86,87,88, 90, 91, 92, 93,94,95 not that I am chomping at the bit for shows from many of these years If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

'76 is already overrepresented in official releases, so no need for a vine there. If 90's or late 80's shows are never vined, I wouldn't care. Of the non-represented years on vines, '79 is the only one I'd like to get some shows from. Problem with '79 is that much of the year does not circulate (or perhaps even exist) on SBD.

dstache, I do generally agree, though those Hampton 89 shows were a pleasant surpriseI was making just more a comment that making a call for those years. I have to say that those later years may be when I could really go for the Road Trips concept I would go for a 73 vine, or more 68 and 69. If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. William Blake

Would be great if people used the following format in the vines so you juts have to go to last post to figure out where things are... Works well on the philzone vines. first name - email address [status] where staus is either "email out to next person" or "in mm/dd" or "out mm/dd" will make life alot easier for viners.... Marty

vine is the one that he is talking about, Stu. And he is just giving you a heads up that when you get the shows and completed riping and burning that you could send them his way. I don't know why he put KFFP (should be KFFM), but vondinkle is after you on that Keith's vine. It will sort out. Take care, tim

folks, I've had an inquiry about vining one of the Nassau '90 shows, specifically 3/29. I'm a little surprised to find that such a vine doesn't already exist. Thoughts?

........as is the Birdsong and and the Help/Slip/Frank on WAN is from 30th I had wondered about that. I don't really want to vine those shows with those tracks missing for two reasons. a) I count Without a Net as a compilation not an incomplete show and b) I discovered that Without a Net is not actually available in the store here! Based on that I had decided to proceed. If Marye wants to adjudicate I will proceed accordingly!

Been around the scene since 1980, goin' to shows and from 83 on touring and taping. Now about 5 Phil/Ratdog shows a year....now collecting/trading cd's. 2 questions: 1. Why are some people reluctant to post shows on archive.org? 2. Why does it seems more shows around are being uploaded to sites in .flac instead of .mp3? Thanks! Steve ..even a blind man knows when the sun is shinin'...you can feel it!..

1. Last I heard, archive.org had suspended uploading of Dead shows, but I'm not sure if the ban is still on.2. mp3 is a convenience format, not a high fidelity format, and is not used when sound quality is valued. I use mp3 for my Old Time Radio collection, but that's mostly spoken-word material recorded in the 30's and 40's (BTW, archive.org has a fantastic assortment of public-domain OTR shows available for free download). mp3 sacrifices some of the file's information in favor of maximum compression, and is therefore referred to as a "Lossy" format, whereas FLAC (short for "Free Lossless Audio Codec") and SHN (which I believe is short for "Shorten") are lossless compression formats, which are capable of restoring exact copies of the original file when decompressed. The down side is that they require much larger files, which puts them out of reach of dail-up users, rendering mp3 the only workable alternative over dail-up. Even then, downloading a whole show is quite a chore. I downloaded a whole show on mp3 from archive.org a few years ago, and it took me several hours a night over 3 or 4 nights to get it all, and after all that you can hear "swishing" all the way through it, which is an artifact of the mp3 compression. You should check out The Vineyard on this site, where The Rhinos have graciuosly allowed show trading by mail- slow but good! -Tommo
