I get a message that reads HTTP 500 Internal Server Error when I try to read new posts for the forum topics 'Got Questions Ask Here' and 'Technical Problems - Forums, Features, etc.' Other details read: Most likely causes: •The website is under maintenance. •The website has a programming error What you can try: Refresh the page. Go back to the previous page. More information This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying. Is anyone else getting that, too? Sometimes with this topic, I can't view new posts from the 'All Recent Posts' button. I have to go to forums, then the topic to view new entries. I can't view the 'Got Questions, Ask Here' thread at all. It'd be interesting to know the technical reasons behind these bugs, as I am quite fascinated by computers and coding (not that I have much exerience with it).

    unforeseen leak in the dike
When a new feature is introduced in a forum like this, there's always going to be someone who tries to exploit it, so my guess is that there would be some blowback from a "Report Spam" button; it's almost too easy to imagine that some might find a thing like that to be useful in a flame war, for example.

...for a 'report spam' button. It's a really good one and should be implemented. Don't be surprised if some unforeseen leak in the dike would spring forth as a result of that however. This site reminds me a little of a Rube Goldberg contraption sometimes. tehehehehe. Lots of love, folks. Have a grateful day.

    > verification process...as well as the captcha...has slowed the spammage I agree with Mr. Pid's assessment. The type of spam I see here doesn't seem to be bot-posted. A person has to set up an account and then deal with the captcha; you can spam dead.net, but it's a very labor intensive process for a rather narrow niche. > a more stringent sign up and user verification process [to] deter these dope wads Such barriers to entry would also make it much more difficult for the non-spammers, which likely far outnumber the dope wads, as you call them, wilfredtjones. My suggestion would be to add a "Report Spam" button to each post, like on craigslist, which wouldn't reduce the number of spam posts, but which would make them easier for marye to find and eradicate.

Sure is tough paging thru the shows until you get to 2/21/73, the discover the Attendees heading doesn't work. Can dead.net repair the access to shows by year and list those who attended?I've asked for the photo upload mechanism to be repaired too: I've discontinued trying to post photos.

    Again,
I don't work here, I just hang out here so all I can do is guess. In one of my favorite bars in the world (McSorely's in NYC) there are a great many interesting artifacts hanging on the walls. One of them is a hand painted sign that reads, "Be Good or Be Gone." That concept, along with the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing seems to be the operant policy regarding user accounts here. Accounts that generate spam get nuked. As far as stiffening the new user accreditation process, culturally we as Deadheads have been all about openness and inclusion, so it would logically follow that any website for, by and about us should mirror that basic posture. Engage us constructively and we are highly likely to reciprocate. Act like a jerk and the probable outcome is that you will be either ignored to death or someone will decide that they are the instrument of Karma and deal with you, one way or another. Besides, I don't know how one might implement any sort of criteria for further qualifying potential users. Would they have to pass some sort of test or something? And test what? There's more than enough "Deader-Than-Thou" floating around for my taste as it is. I think you kinda have to leave the door open, wait 'til that deal comes round, and then don't let that deal go down. But that's just how I see it. Anybody else have any bright ideas?

...by the same token though, I notice that the spammers are invariably brand spanking new users. Would not a more stringent sign up and user verification process deter these dope wads? I bet it goes back to limited resources, right?

I'm still there. It's only happened a few times. There is not a single person who would log in as me b/c nobody knows my top secret password. Nobody knows I'm here for that matter really. Strange things are abound...

well, if the problem persists, let us know. I've encountered this when I've had multiple pages open and logged out on one of them, but I don't usually get too far without being asked to log in.

I'll try to avoid getting too technical here, but I have definitely noticed differing page rendering when logged in vs not, specifically a high proportion of stale pages when not logged in. By that I mean pages that are missing content that should be there, such as recent posts that I saw when logged in, but which do not appear when logged out. My suspicion here has to do with browser caching. There is an HTML tag [META HTTP-EQUIV="Pragma" CONTENT="no-cache"] (replace the squares with angles) that will force browsers to reload each page from the server every time, that will probably cure this syndrome, but will also slow everyone down a bit, not to mention burning a LOT more bandwidth. Alternatively, as drupal is built with php, you could also try ' header(”Cache-Control: max-age=0″);' You might run this by your developers. It may help. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

Now what the hell happened to my picture? Profile? How did these things just get erased? I logged on earlier today and everything was there. I never erased anything, how did that happen?

I bow to Mr Pids technical know how. Here's a couple of tips Phantom Log Ins This happens often to me. It seems to result from not logging off properly. When you log out, make sure that the process finishes completely before closing your browser or heading off to another site (wait for 'Done' at the bottom of the screen in Firefox). Also do not log out and then use the 'Go Back' button on your browser, once logged off it is best to close Deadnet and then reopen when needed. Stale Pages This is getting annoying. For example in 'Show Recent Posts' I often get the current page from when I last logged out. The only way to get the most recent is to log in .it makes browsing without logging in a real pain (which must use more bandwidth too).

can you please please please please ask the tech people to fix it so that we can see the most recent post first. It is such a pain having always to head for the last page and work backwards through a thread. This has been requested many times and cannot be that hard to achieve (after all Personal Messages are sorted like that). I am sure Mr Pid knows how to do this ;-)

There is a way to do this already. If you retrieve the Forums topic, any topics with new posts will have a link showing the count of new items. If you click on that link, instead of the topic name, you will get the page with the new posts, already scrolled to the first new post. Note that this is NOT yet implemented on the All Recent posts page, and only seems to work when logged in. Then again, if you're not logged in, all posts are "new," so to speak. "New" is a client session level concept, not a server level concept. Likewise, there is also a link to the last item posted, and that will take you directly to that item as well. This functionality appears to have been (silently) rolled out within the last week or so, and I just happened to notice the more correctly formed urls when I inadvertently hovered my mouse over one of the links. Hope this speeds your reading, Badger. BTW, hope all was well with the wifey's canine inclusive bday. I trust you got her something nice for the garden. As for the avatars disappearing, this is probably an unintended server configuration issue. It could be something as simple as a missing or malformed item in a properties file. As I have virtually no experience with drupal, we'll have to wait for an official assessment. When it comes to web apps, I always "roll my own" and prefer to use java/JSP instead of php. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

Unlike before it does work via the forums (fora?), but as you point out, not via 'all recent posts' which I use more often to navigate. Hopefully they'll fix that soon. I love the way they leave us to discover these things! We had a great birthday thanks, although I am still not talking to the dawg. As for the garden..been planting fruit trees today!

If they would just compose the urls on that page the same way the do on the fora pages, then your wish would be granted Badger. Maybe "they're" listening... Perhaps they don't announce new functionality rollouts so as to preserve the opportunity for some Joy of Discovery as we wend our way along our respective journeys. Fortunately, they don't require us to communicate in Latin. There's only so much of it I remember. Semper ubi sub ubi. Nothing like a bad pun to set the tone. As for el Poochie....back to that topic. Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

but I have duly reported it! kj, the problem we've been seeing off and on with mailing new passwords to new people is that various systems reject those messages and don't put them through. Comcast and hotmail are frequent culprits, but we see it in all kinds of places. So if this persists on either of your machines speak up.

Yes, my inbox used to be under "my account" or over "Log Out", not sure which, but it's gone & if I go to your page & try to send you a message, there's only the "Block Message". This has gone on for a few days, & I just assumed it was the whole site, like the picture issue? Am I wrong?

This site seems to be running slower than usual in the last days. Other sites I visit on the web are loading at the same speed as usual. It's only when I try to get into the forums that it seems to be doing it, and not all the time either. Maybe it's just when the server is busy in the US? I tried at 7am this morning and it was ridiculously slow. Anyone else having the same experience in Europe or is it just dodgy German service providers? It is normally a fast connection here. Are you kind?
