BILL GRAHAM REMEMBERED: Wavy Gravy, Dr. David E. Smith, Thom O'hair, Mickey Hart, Robin Williams

Concert promoter Bill Graham died in a helicopter crash on a rainy night in October 1991, along with his girlfriend, Melissa Gold, and his pilot, Steve Kahn.

Dr. David E. Smith was the founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic. His long-out-of-print memoir Love Needs Care is well worth reading if you can find a copy. Thom O'hair, now deceased, was the program director at KSAN in its heyday, back in that time when FM radio was the community listening post of the counterculture. Wavy Gravy is Wavy Gravy, of course. The insane/delightful actor/comedian Robin Williams is a San Francisco native, and he - along with hundreds of other Bay Area luminaries - spent November 3, 1991 at Golden Gate Park, grieving and celebrating with the rest of us at a memorial event titled Laughter, Love and Music. * * * You can browse and/or search the Grateful Dead Hour program logs on the GD Hour web site. hardly seems that long ago
Another great hour plucked from history. Bill Graham and the Grateful Dead have - and will, I presume - always be linked together in my mind. Showing my bias, the band's music speaks for itself - but without the promoter...who knows how many would have missed the bus and never listened. Thanks for helping connect the dots, David. In a brief search for Love Needs Care, I found a page reviewing a book about Dr Smith by Clark Sturges. From there, a link to HAFC results in discovering that the Free Clinic is celebrating 35 years of Rock Med on June 22 with a concert. In light of the collective concern for health care in current culture, it seems appropriate. Health Care is a Right, Not a Privilege.

He's gone now, too (2006). Sad to see this beautiful tide receding. Thanks again for keeping it alive, Gans! "Since you've all been such good boys and girls, I would like to take everybody in this entire audience out for milk and cookies. There are buses outside. Everybody follow me."

So I a friend of mines mother was an Egyptian national living in Cairo at the time and stumbled into the show by mistake. She told me the one time that this was the only day of her life that she doesn't remember, what a pity. I wonder who D25ed her?
