The Wait Is Over… The Winterland 1973 Box Has Arrived!

Sherman, set the Wayback machine for the second week of November, 1973. The Grateful Dead are on a roll…yes, again! The summer had seen the band playing triumphant mega-shows with the Allman Brothers at RFK Stadium in D.C. and at Watkins Glenn in upstate New York. With their popularity seemingly still escalating by the month, fall tours took them to various East Coast haunts and all over the Midwest. On October 15, they released Wake of the Flood, their first album on their own independent record label, and copies were flying out of stores coast to coast. So the mood in the band was WAY UP when their incredibly busy schedule brought them home for three shows at Winterland in San Francisco November 9, 10 and 11—before they set off again for points East.

Winterland always brought out the best—and the beast—in the band. Located across Geary Boulevard from the Fillmore Auditorium, the one-time home of the Ice Follies had hosted dozens of amazing rock shows since Bill Graham started putting on shows there in the late ’60s. It’s where the top tier of Bay Area bands would get together occasionally for marathon shows, and it’s where the most popular out-of-town acts—from The Doors, to Hendrix, to The Who, to the Rolling Stones—would play in the era before faceless sports arenas became an unfortunate fact of concert-going life. But nobody played Winterland as often as the Dead. By the time they’d trucked their ever-expanding sound system to the venue for their November ’73 shows, they’d already logged 31 concerts there—and there would be another 28 eventful Dead nights at Winterland before the old place was closed after the Dead’s New Year’s Eve show in 1978, and eventually reduced to rubble to make way for condos. Sure, the 5,000-capacity hall was acoustically challenging and a little frayed on the edges. But with its narrow open floor, shallow lower balcony that encircled the entire venue, its deeper back balcony chill zone, and serpentine walkways between floors, it was a tremendously fun and entertaining place to see a show—especially a Dead show.

Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings captures the Dead during one of their peak years and absolutely at the top of their game. Spread over nine discs, it includes every note of three complete consecutive shows (save for the encore of November 9, which was not recorded), so there’s plenty here to satisfy every fan: magnificent jams on “Dark Star” (which sprawls to 35 completely compelling minutes!), “Playing in the Band,” “Eyes of the World,” the still-new “Weather Report Suite” and more; kick-ass rockers of every variety (“Sugar Magnolia,” “Casey Jones,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Truckin’,” et al); haunting ballads including “China Doll,” “Stella Blue” and “To Lay Me Down”; a truly spectacular “China Cat”; and the first of just three versions ever of the dazzling sequence of “Playing in the Band” > “Uncle John’s Band” > “Morning Dew” > “Uncle John’s” reprise > “Playing” reprise. (For a complete listing of the contents of the nine discs, go here.)

All the music here was drawn from Grateful Dead crew member Kidd Candelario’s crystal clear and wonderfully present 2-track soundboard reels of the shows, and enhanced by the mastering work of the always reliable sonic wizard Jeffrey Norman, who used all sorts of arcane processes to bring it all into the glorious world of HDCD sound. This stuff will rattle your bones! The beautifully designed box also comes with a colorful booklet containing scads of great photos and a fine essay by Grateful Dead historian Dennis McNally.

We like to think of Winterland 1973 as being part of the noble tradition established by the ecstatically received Fillmore West 1969: The Complete Recordings, and as a precursor for other complete-run boxes to come. So clear out a chunk of space in the ol’ CD case, ’cause this mutha’ is a BIG ONE!

Don’t delay! You can order Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings right now by clicking here !

(To help get you in the mood, you can preview some of the music on the Winterland 1973 box by clicking here. And to give you a little glimpse of what Winterland was like, check out this video montage with audio from the ’73 shows and visuals from The Grateful Dead Movie, shot at Winterland a year later!)

    How about a poster
Since we are all digging the cover art how about a bonus on top of the bonus and throw in a poster of the cover art. That way we can spend hours deciphering who is who. It would make that C-Note I plunked down go a lot further.

I too had the same problem with Bertha, had to delete it from the set, this is to bad. I'm sure for the 109.00 bucks I piad for this to arrive that Dead.net and Rhino will send me a replacement. Skipping noted on greatest story ever told also. A stain is on my new box set. This is to bad, I guess it was never really sent to QA? Coconut Phil, living Free.

For the past 3 days on the ups website my tracking info is listed as "Billing Info Received". I hope that it is just a mix up and the package is really on its way since I chose the 2 day air option. Has anyone else had this happen?

Interesting thing to me is that I have looked over every square centimeter of the box set and cannot find any reference to Rhino. It says it was manufactured on behalf of Grateful Dead Productions. I was under the impression due to various posts and things on this site that Rhino has exclusive rights to the vault. Anyone know anything about this that can clear it up?

I've been following the package on UPS's web site since I ordered it 2nd Day Air on Tuesday night. Shipped Wednesday -- thanks for that -- and is now heading to me in the Chicago area on a trailer from Davenport, IA. Reminds me of Cedar Falls 1978. Truckin' firing up with the horns blowin' from the big rigs on both sides of the stage in the UniDome. Me and 8 other friends rented and rode over in a Winnebago from Lincoln during a freezin' cold February with only one battery working in our coach. What a strange trip it was. I have decided tomorrow is a day off for me to finish my taxes and wait for the delivery. I love being able to follow it through UPS's web site and I love the Dead. This is gonna fill my weekend. Everything I've heard online sounds great (listening to wxou.org right now -- thanks for the tip). I've always been partial to '73 and '77. I can't wait.

I can honestly say that receiving this release in the mail with all the artwork, the setlists written in the sleeves, the concert selections, the free button, the box that opens like a treasure chest all add up to the greatest release that I've ever received in thirty years of being a dead head. this is truly a pleasure and well worth the money for the efforts on a grand scale, thanks to everyone that had any part of this grand release !!!!IMHO, JurassicBlueberries

The Good: 1. This is a beautiful package. Packaging increasingly matters in this digital age, and this is a first-rate set - the best they've done. I could usually care less about how music I like is bundled up, but this box made me feel kid-like excitement with all of its nuances, the trinkets, and the killer artwork. 2. The music. Well no kidding. The Bad: 1. The defect in the first show that prevents uploading Bertha. I listen to shows while hiking, so this is a major annoyance. You would think they'd check these things ... 2. The liner notes. While the booklet/photos are great, do we really need another essay from one of the usual suspects putting a particular set of Dead music in its historical context? McNally and the others do this really well, but it's been done to the point where I'm not reading anything new to me. I'd much rather read any or all of the following: (a) Current interviews with band members looking back at the music. (b) A technical article that breaks down the playing on some of the improvised pieces - i.e. that Dark Star - modalities they were soloing in, what the rhythm section was doing to comp, etc. (c) Accounts from different types of fans that were at the show (i.e. old, young, sober, stoned). In the meantime, keep the music coming!

Thomas D For years now we have been purchasing the two track tapings of some excellent shows, mostly as Dicks Picks and later compilations in the Road Trip series. The Multi track shows were excellent also, but a difference in the pricing structure existed between these two recording technologies. Now it seems that this price difference has been eliminated. While I understand that the DP's were packaged minimally and this new Winterland release is an awesome package, it stands to reason that recordings are no better than the DP series. Don't get me wrong the GD family really worked wonders on these decades old recordings. They brought the music alive again. However, Multi-track recordings allow for a lot more fixing and reworking to let the music shine. It is this extensive work, I thought anyway, that justified a higher price for these releases I'm just wondering that when the GD sold the vault contents, lock stock and barrel, to a bunch of suits visions of dollar signs was floating in the minds of these suits. While no one wants to knock their wanting to make a profit from their investments, it should be noted that what Dick Latvala started for the pure love of the music is now a major investment to those that neither made the music nor lived and loved it for the pure joy of it. I guess some of this is my jealousy of not being able to afford it at this price. I really want it but with my fixed disability income and the needs of a ten year old child to care for, I can't justify spending a C-note(plus shipping and taxes). I don't know, maybe saving up for it slowly, but than I lose the bonus disc. Ah who ever said life was fair.....

Left my taxes unfinished on the desk, jumped in the car and hunted down my UPS driver. Got it. First, very early impression, is that the sound quality in my car seems far superior to the Dick's Picks two-tracks. Two other notes: I didn't have a problem with uploading Bertha from the first show into my itunes. Must be a random glitch for some and I got lucky. Plus, does anyone know where I can find jpgs of the individual covers so I can load them into my ipod? I thought I saw them somewhere as I was surfing around. Otherwise, at this moment Jerry's notes are floating around the heavens and the four winds are blowing me safely home.

I copied the picture right from this websight. The story about the new Winterland 1973 release has a picture you can click and enlarge. I just copied the picture and saved it on my computer. I added it to each song after I burned each CD and loaded the shows on my iTunes and iPod. It can be a bit of a tedious process because it has to be uploaded for each song. Nonethless, the picture is very cool when you are playing songs in iTunes. I too must be one of the lucky ones as I have had no issue burning/uploading Bertha or any other song or disc from the compilation. Overall, it is good stuff. 1973 was a year that wasn't represented well among my collection of shows and this is good representation for that period. The packaging is cool and identifing all the historical people/figures in the drawing can be a good way to spend a few minutes. I noticed alot of different people, but who is the heavyset guy right in front of the picture in the middle with the glasses, beard and black shirt to the left of the alligator?

You don't have to add the art one song at a time in itunes. All you have to do is highlight all of the songs by clicking on the first song, scroll down to the last one (depending on which show you're working on ) and then hold the shift key down and click on the last song. Everything highlights, then right click on the highlighted songs and find the tab for artwork. Paste it right in. Boy, Keith has tasty chops in some of these tunes. I think he was very underated.

I came home for lunch from work today to make sure no one had the chance to take it off my porch. So I opened the door and I was surprised to how small the box was. I was thinking it was much bigger for some reason. I like the box and the trippy design and I actually do like the cardboard holders. They are actually safer than you think, caus i've ordered some cd's that come in plastic cases and sometimes they get knocked out of their holders and get scratched up. But these are securely in there and are easy to get out. So I had to go back to work and I picked the bonus cd to listen to first since everyone else that posted did. Caus everyones doin it. haha. It sounds great. The Eyes of the World is one of the best I've ever heard. Some really different notes than normal in that song. In the middle of the song you hear this explosion of something. Then I realized it was Phil somehow made this sound on his bass. I can't wait to listen to the run of shows here this weekend. Jerry sounds crisp and clear as he's young and flowing with style. Bobby was in the yelling mood sounding like he was having lots of fun. This was only the bonus disc so I'll get back to you on the flip side. Peace John

Good luck waiting for the vinyl, MayoStudentT. The music sounds just fine on CD. And, although the quality of sound degrades considerably on an ipod, I'm able to carry my 843 Miles Davis tunes, 634 Coltrane tunes, 320 Mingus tunes and 1,700 Dead tunes anywhere around the world. Much easier than with a turntable in my pocket. A great set of headphones works just fine. In fact, this audiophile is having a fabulous time right at this moment listening to disk number 2 on CD. No complaints here.

WHOOO HAAAH!!!! SWEET!!! Bout TIME!!! :-) I gotta say I LOVE 73-74 dead, what a couple of great years! out of ALL the TONS of dead shows I have in my collection, I MUST SAY, 68-74 and 1977(a bit of 78) and 1987-1990 where in MY opinion the Deads TRUE PEAK years.. ALL of those years.. Don't get me wrong, They put on some great shows in the other years, but as far as PEAKS go, I personaly love the 69-74 years the BEST.. Followed by 77 then 87-89 And a few great 1990 shows too- (More for the memories then anything).. but THANK GOD for this realease!!! My darn mailman can't get here FAST ENOUGH today, to bring me this incredible 10 disk set (9 @ winterland) and I am gonna have to turn off my phones and lock thy doors cause I'm not coming out again until I have heard the WHOLE 10 disks!! And thank you for not releasing another COMPILATION for once RHINO! LOL!!! PEACE TO ALL THE DEADHEAD NATION!!! Cosmic Travelers - Gypsy Blue Tshirts, Glass, something 4 U!

SAD.. I just want to hear my Grateful dead for belive me, I AM GRATEFUL!!! :-) Just be happy you are alive and the dead is still here in our hearts and our cd players!!! Yes I have the same problem. When you convert 11/9/73 Bertha to MP3 it just keeps on skipping. The interesting thing is that apparently most everyone has the same or similar problem. I would just try to get all of the problems that people are reporting, and put them together into a fix-it package. And if someone reports one problem, or another, just send them the whole repair kit. Because it could take me a week or more to carefully listen to every track on the 10 cd's. I'm reporting one here, but there could be many more. Please give us the download option. This type of headache I do not need from a $100. set. Greg SC

Hey I agree I would LOVE to see more VINYL records.. I know they are not an Ipod or digital.. But, THERE IS NOTHING, TRULY NOTHING that captures the essencse of a classic like a good record.... For some reason I think MOST music sounds MUCH better on records, Thats why I collect them (Have over 2,000 last time I checked..) ALL the gratfeul dead records are so sweet, I mean, no tape or cd EVER gives you all the cool stuff u get in a record (Posters, more lyrics/pics, cool liners and they are classic!. I love my cds and ipod like everyone else.. but there is nothing like having the record in your hand (NO DOWNLOAD CAN DO THAT) and there was ALWAYS extra stuff in the record jackets that NEVER made it into tape or cds EVER... Plus every once in a while, I run into a record at some tag sale for like 10 cents that ends up being worth $500.00 !!! I would rather listen to the BEATLES white album on record ANYDAY over ANY OTHER MEANS OF SOUND DEVICE. SAME W/ LIVE DEAD!!! PLUS I recently got a copy of WAKE OF THE FLOOD on record, THE ORIGINAL GD RECORDS(First ever release on GD records) THE ONE WITH THE CROW ON THE RECORD!!! THAT IS FRIGGN SWEET!!! worth a bit too!!! Not that I would ever sell it- lol... PEACECosmic Travelers - Gypsy Blue Tshirts, Glass, something 4 U!

Y'know, I love records too, I certainly think they do sound better than digital (infinite sound range) and all that - in fact I work at a crusty ol' record shop - but let's be realistic here people; if they put this thing on wax, it'd be like a 25 LP set. Not to mention all the sequences that'd get split up. Plus, ever shipped 25 records? Then we'd REALLY get some complaints on the shipping charges...

This will be mostly appreciated by the elder wizards. Thank you Jerry. Magical moments are everywhere...Garcia in his youthful peak...11/10 Jack Straw...magical...what about that moment within the Looks Like Rain...absolutely gorgeous...there's Garcia magic all throughout...it's gonna take some time to digest...years of appreciation and enjoyment...carrying on in all aspects of life. Thank you Jerry. And thank you, the GD organization, for releasing this. Peggyo

Because I feel a bit guilty about asking the question, I'm going to start by saying that I'm listening to the first disc of the run and am completely satisfied with the quality and feel of the music. The resulting sound from the mix is awesome and the band is tight! Having said that, and because I've heard read (not yet heard, and hope I don't when I get there) the skips on Bertha and Greatest Story, has anybody else heard a cut (or splice, or something) on Me and Bobby McGee, about 1:20 into the song? Is that something I should report in on or is that something that's not repairable? Please, keep these coming. I'd buy two a year.

I just use Sony MDR-V700 studio headphones. Their full size but have great bass and high end. Cost around $150. I'm not into spending $400-$500 on headphones. I also have the Bose Triports. Sound is decent, but I wouldn't recommend them. If I don't want to wear the studio headphones walking around a mall, I put in some $50 Sony ear canals. By the way, there is so much sweetness coming out of Jerry's guitar on this box, I'm gonna tear up eventually. I'd give anything to hear it live just one more time.

(*From all I have heard) and ENERGY that NEVER was the same again after 74!!! NEVER!! They may have had OTHER peaks later, but nothing with the INTENSITY and energy they DID HAVE in the 69-74 period, in my opinion.. Those are of course my Fav. years, I try to get ANY and ALL shows from this era on cd, and so far I am doing pretty darn well at that mission! lol It just seems that WInterland brought out the best in each and every member of the grateful dead when they played there for some magical reason... Thank You Jerry, for even a 26 year old can still to this day experience and enjoy all of your wonderful, Beautiful, AMAZING, SPEECHLESS, LIFE CHANGING music and the generations to come will as well!! That kinda blows my mind just thinkn aboiut all the dif. generations that have been touched deeply by the Deads music in some way or another!!! And I am one of those "YOUNGENs"-(Although I'm 26 in THIS current lifetime, I am an OLD OLD OLD SOUL" still im every bit of a true diehard deadhead as the folks who where there in the early 70's.. and P.S.(Have to say this-LOL)- 4 all the older folks who still think we don't get the same "STRONG" mind bending stuff, We still have the recipes!!! Its out there and believe me, Its every bit as INSANE AND MIND BENDING as what you all were eating like chicklets back in the 60's.. at least all my Older freinds said the same.. Truly!!!... It just keeps on rollin down the tracks gatherin MORE momentum and steam....2 this day still! And Not ALL of the Young ones are the Neo breed of "Know it all,(BURN YOU IN THE PARKN LOT) Wanna be, so called "Hippies".... All though I get just as anoyed at some of those KIDS as well.... I go to shows for ONE REASON: the MUSIC.... Anything else is ALL just a bonus! (Although I do enjoy meeting all the goergous dead head gals at the shows!) (One of those gals has GOT TO BE MY FUTURE WIFE,LOL-I couldn't marry someone who wasn't a deadhead as well, it would NEVER WORK 4 me!!! ) ;-) :-) ;-) LOL.... PEACE!!! Cosmic Travelers - Gypsy Blue Tshirts, Glass, something 4 U!

Great set that has fantastic sound. Even though I was one of those who had skips on my set (kudos to c.s. for their fast response) I'm extremely happy with the quality and care that went into this box set. The “Dark Star” >“Eyes Of The World” is the highlight for me; it's just cooler than ice cubes.

If you really want excellent sound, I recommend earphones specificaly made for your ears only. I have a pair from Ultimate Ears (www.ultimateears.com) that are superb for sound and are as good for noise cancellation as the bulky headphones. The sound quality, of course, depends on what bit rate you've converted your cds to. I personally do not hear much difference between 256 and 320 bit rates. I can't comment on other conversions besides mp3. There are a couple of problems with Ultimate Ears: they are expensive- >$500.00, and you would need to see an Audiologist for an impression of your ears to send in for ear phone fabrication. Ultimate Ears is made of hard plastic and there are other companies that make the same product but from a much more flexible material. I do not have the name(s) of those companies but they are out there. I highly recommend Ultimate Ears if you can overcome the above problems.
