What can you do? The amount of freedom that is allowed is important, perhaps more so than the few who are misbehaving. I think Marye strikes a good balance in a difficult situation. Saying that people should only PM one another because of this is an overreaction. Can't stand the heat? Stay out of the chatroom! (Thanks to all kind heads who have tried to lift the vibe there)

... we NEVER used to have these issues (chat room misbehavior, not the software kind) in the chat room. What ever happened? I believe the chat room's demise was the discovery, by a certain group of unpleasant, RUDE people, of our peaceful little place on the inet. So what to do? Well, many of us have decided to stay away, we still PM each other from time to time, but I look at it much the same way as the scene at GD shows after the summer of 1987: There's not a damn thing that can be done to fix it. So I guess if ya don't like it, don't use it.

mod hat on So folks, as you may have noticed I am not inclined to micromanage life in the chat room. There are several reasons for this, but certainly tops on my list would be the fact that, in my experience, it doesn't work. From time to time I get complaints that this person or that is doing something in the chat room that's making someone else unhappy. Or, even better, two people complaining to me about each other. And let's just say that in many cases serious lines have been crossed, and in many cases the heat of the moment was involved, and throwing stones/glass houses/etc. However, let's just say that harassing and abusing one's fellow participants in the chat room, whether by threatening them, serving up hate speech against some group present or absent, showering people with profanity, or otherwise creating a hostile atmosphere, is behavior that puts one on thin ice. Spammers aside, I very, very rarely block people or delete their accounts. I think it's a very extreme step. Nonetheless, making life a misery for other people hereabouts on a sufficiently regular basis to get noticed definitely improves one's odds of being in this select group, to which I would infinitely prefer not to add at all. Thank you and mod hat off. ME

it's kind of like ugly parking lot scenes vs. benign ones. CC Joe posted a great tale of Old School Deadheadism a couple years back that's quite resonant with all this. If you cannot lead the bad actors by example, or use white corpuscle effect on them, just walk away and leave them spewing their bad vibes. As noted above, they thrive on your energy.

After reading some of these posts, I tend to agree with alot that is said, and alot that is implied, and some not so much. One that I'm sure of through being a "chat room nerd" that we are held accountable! Of course there is no "moderator" as there should not be...we as a community should moderate ourselves. Of course we are going to get the slammers, bashers, haters, and non-good lovin people in there, it's the human race. I do know that we as a whole, the good hearted-kind people in this space we call Cyber, have told the offenders flat out to cut it out. After frequenting this place for alot of years, I do know one thing, there is LOVE and KIND people in there....after so long, you can just pick them out. When I say accountability, we have to be able to govern ourselves, and we do...it's a non-contrallable environment, except for the fact that YOU as a person have the power to control your involvement. In fact this reminds me of John Perry Barlow's battles over the interenet he's had since it all began with the EFF.... When you get involved, get involved with your heart and kindness. Negativity, has no place in our community. I love the Grateful Dead....I am not perfect....BUT, I know that my heart is in the right place and that others hear on Dead.net share that heart! _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? Having a little repetition problem this morning? Your bug come back:-) Was at Feria-got home at about 7 this morning. Was a great experience, though a pain in the butt to get home. Were in 3 casetas-one quite traditional, one just plain boring, and one where we spent many hours, an "open" one belonging to a group for open-mindedness and toleration, where the music was not Sevillianas, but a mix of ancient Spanish pop classics, and a whole bunch of more alternative Sevillians. Learned the basics of dancing Sevillianas, and after enough manzanilla-could even imitate the more talented halfway decently. Was a great night, but think was enough Sevillian Feria for me. Will go to one in Asuna in May with a co-worker, which is supposed to be smaller. Is supposed to be alot more intimate-so will see. ********************************** Don't part with your illusions. The wife and I just finished watching Kingpin. I'd fortgotten how funny it is. Anyway, in the course of the film, there comes a point where one of the characters has to roll a third time in the tenth frame. I explained to my wife under what circumstance the phenomenon of the Third Roll In The Tenth Frame occurs and its many and varied possibilitlies (alright, there aren't THAT many). When I finished my discourse she said to me "Wow, I'm glad I don't know that much about bowling." Think it's time to watch The Big Lebowski again ;-).

I happened to look at the page that shows the topics all listed. Would you believe that this topic was created 4 days and 20 hours ago??? It's, it's, it's a miracle I tell ya!!! No, wait, it's Kismet. Well I must take advantage of this fortuitous moment in time. Please excuse me for a bit...

I had the sirius channel on in the background this afternoon. The topic was something like: 'Your memories of Winterland'. Towards the end of the show they interview a guy from the Bay Area named "Buddy". It's going to be rebroadcast on Tuesday at 5PM ET... Could it be? LOL

Back many, MANY moons ago when I worked the offshore oil rigs, I met an ancient gentleman who made no bones about his fondness for all things alcoholic (think he used the 7 days offshore to clean up). He told me the only thing he would never drink again was tequila. When I asked why he just smiled and said, "Tequila will make you take back shit you never stole!". . . Words of wisdom.

Instead, mix it with Nellie and Joe's key lime juice and lime infused simple syrup in equal parts. Also add 1/3 part Cointreau (or triple sec if you must) and shake with ice. Salt to taste if desired. Yummy! I once whipped up a couple of gallons of this for a party of about 40. It actually lasted almost an hour... Conversation is always more interesting than recitation, so speak your mind and not someone else's.

Tequila was awesome, (when I used to drink alcohol). I never had any problems while consuming that stuff but unfortunately, other folks I was around, while under it's influence, seemed to think differently. I came to the conclusion (once I came "to") that this drug shuts off one's brain but isn't nearly as effective doing the same on that person's mouth and feet. Apparently many different law enforcement agencies have confirmed this effect on myself and dispite my better judgement, I stopped (if I make it that long, it will be 19 yrs. on Aug. 13th, not that that really matters to me anymore - I do love that the day was the 13th). I still do milk and cookies, though. "Since you've all been such good boys and girls, I would like to take everybody in this entire audience out for milk and cookies. There are buses outside. Everybody follow me."

Ya well said, the only thing worse than drinking Ta-Kill-ya is throwing it up!!! Used to drink at a Kiwi Bar here in Shanghai and the Tequila shots were free!! Man i have woken up on buses, parks (with Chinese doing Tai-Chi around me), massage parlers, you name it. So with that being said, i do not drink Tequila anymore. This was a while back!! The comment above: “Tequila will make you take back shit you never stole!” Aint that right!! Good one.

Adore tequila! Is a fun drunk, and for some strange reason does not kill me the day afterwards like most other alcohols tend to.********************************** Don't part with your illusions. When they are gone, you will still exist, but you have ceased to live. Samuel Clemens
